Social Media: Privacy in a Public World
Privacy
Privacy in the PastAll you had to do was ride across the state line and change your name.
“What was your name in the States? Was it Johnson or Thompson or Bates?Did you murder your wife and flee for your life? What was your name in the States?”
Privacy in the 20th CenturyAribert Heim
Nazi war criminal, was placed in a POW camp, released, and worked as a OBGYN until 1962.
He fled through Europe and Africa, and despite a worldwide man-hunt that has lasted over 50 years, is still on the loose.

Privacy by Obscurity
• Mountains of paper are too hard to search through.
• Records were kept where they were recorded (the family Bible).
• Easy to misfile or destroy.
Privacy Today• It only takes 33 bits of data to
UNIQUELY identify YOU
• “Take, for example, a database that stores a user’s ZIP code, gender, age and model of car. ...If the ZIP code has 20,000 people, gender narrows that down to 10,000. Age could cut it down to a few hundred, and once you add model of car, you could be looking at a handful of people. “

There is a TON of data about you in public records, and PI’s have access to more.

Myth of Privacy
•There are VERY few things that are private, and they are being eroded every day.
•Public data is being converted to electronic form.
• I can learn more about you than you might like even if you NEVER visit a Social Media site.
What’s the Point of All This?
Best Practices
MySpace
•The Granddaddy of social media.
• It has been eclipsed by Facebook
Facebook• The reigning Champ of Social Media
• 1 Billion Active users, 58% return daily
• Each Day 300 Million photos are added, & 3.2 Billion comments are made. Assuming about 80,000 words to a novel & that each comment was only 1 word you could fill 40,000 novels/day. The Library of Congress has 35 Million books (875 days or almost 1 mile of shelf/day).

• About 140 Million active users
• There are 750 tweets per second on an average day
• Think of it as texting for the internet

• “Facebook” for professionals
• 187 million users and the worlds largest Professional Network
• 2.6 Million companies have pages

Google+ and Pinterest
• New guys on the block
• Google is padding G+’s growth by requiring you to sign up.
• Pinterest is about creating communities of interest.
Best PracticesSocial Media = Radio
Social Media = RadioFormat = Your Interests
Broadcast = Sends your “format” to anyone who wants to “listen” (Public)
Audience = Your Friends, Family, or Other Followers
Ratings = Likes, Comments, and Audience Size
Social Media = Radio
Social Media broadcasts your interests (Format) to your friends (Audience) who let you know if they like what you are saying (Ratings).
Best Practices: Apply the Principles of Radio
•Keep Posts Topical
•Practice Self-Censorship
Our Social Future
A Signpost for the Future
“When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks.
But as people moved more towards urban centers, people started to get into cars.
I think PCs are going to be like trucks. Less people will need them.
And this transformation is going to make some people uneasy…”
A Signpost for the Future

Why Social Media is Taking Over
• It’s Non-technical
• It’s Fast
• It’s Tied into the Shift to Mobile Devices
What is Social Media’s Future?
•WWW is nearly 25 years old. SM is only about 7 years old. It’s an infant.
•With about 100 SM sites expect consolidation.
•Facebook is relevant for the foreseeable future, Google+ is questionable.
•Pinterest and LinkedIn will grow.
•Don’t Fear the Reaper. SM is not the end of privacy (that’s already gone).
Take Away•SM is in it’s infancy. Etiquette
will happen. SM & it’s users are still learning.
• If you wouldn’t shout it from the highest mountain; don’t put it up on you SM page.
