What is Twitter all about?
Twitter is a social media
platform that allows you to
share information and post
“Tweets” to a broad
audience.
Tweets have to be 160
characters (this includes
spaces, numbers,
symbols…etc.)
You can include key terms
that are searchable to see
who is talking about the
same things you are. These
are called HASHTAGS.
Example: #PCWC14

What is digital
citizenship!?
Digital citizenship is a term/concept
that helps focus and collect those
best practices which teachers can
then use to help students use
technology more effectively.
This includes things like the digital
footprint, respecting copyright,
authenticity of sources, proper
commenting and posting on social
platforms (social etiquette).

Points of Emphasis
First, social media usage is growing. Younger and younger students are gaining access to mobile devices and social platforms.
Our society has never been as stimulated by information as we are at the present.
The marketplace and businesses are increasing their dependence on social media as an economic tool while families are becoming more digital.
How are we going to understand and meet an increasing digital generation with a relevant education?

Too often social media is used to
share that irresistible selfie. Well,
NO LONGER! We should empower
students to post their work,
pictures, ideas, and comments on
public forums. This encourages
authentic writing and work because
there is a real audience.
This is a great motivator for
students, and helps to teach proper
digital citizenship.

Set Goals…
If you are looking to get started with twitter or even another social platform, just know that it takes TIME.
For it to be the most effective it really should become part of your routine or habit.
For instance, every Monday night there is a #LuthEDtwitter chat. This has been built into my routine. Sometimes I just follow along and look at what people have posted and sometimes I participate.
Baby steps. This will not happen overnight.
