Social Media Advancements of 2012 that impact
2013: The 9 platforms which changed your online
marketing perspective
Looking in retrospective, all I can say about
2012 is: it was a year of change. Everything
changed in terms of online marketing. And
from an online marketing perspective, I can
also say that people have been extremely
successful in upgrading and adapting their
battle plans for their online presence.
Have you…?
If you are like many business owners, perhaps you lack the time to keep up with the fast
online advancements. But don’t worry; just like you there are many others who struggle between the devil and the white sea: what is good and what is bad? What has changed and
what has remained the same?
Interested in what I have to say? Keep reading…
To start with, I can tell you that in 2012 we have seen changes in social media that we
never saw coming. In this article I will talk about what these changes are and how they
impacted the way we now plan and apply our strategies for online marketing in 2013.
I know it is the middle of the year, but there has never been a single better time to start things
off fresh than now. 6 months of 2013 have been more than enough to see what works and
what doesn’t, so now it is high time for you to start to implement, implement, implement.
And now, I give you…
The 9 social media platforms which changed the world’s view
upon online marketing:
1. Facebook bought Instagram Not a novelty, but nothing in this article is a novelty. What makes a difference now as
compared to last year is the easiness with which you can switch between Facebook and

Instagram. It’s easy to share photos from Instagram on Facebook , and Facebook pics
now have a ratio similar to those in Instagram.
Why am I telling you this and how is this affecting your online marketing
strategy?
You should leverage off every opportunity. If you like digesting information through
Facebook, that does not mean everybody likes to do the same. So, taking into consideration
that it’s so easy to mingle Facebook with Instagram, maybe it is time to consider
integrating Instagram in your online marketing.
After all, in September 2012 the platform had 100 million users. And September is a longtime ago…
2. Twitter’s paid advertising is now targeted Another giant took a bite of the paid advertising cake. Obviously, with the aim of helping
business owners to better target their audience through interest and username.
If you’re like me, you are now thinking, “ How could someone target their ads on Twitter
using usernames?” – a fair question since usernames on Twitter are often #dhrntmanetcetc.
But Twitter has an explanation: if you want to target by username, the platform willsuggest people whose names are similar to another username (so they are not necessarily
following one another).
On the other side, targeting by interest means that Twitter will analyse the keywords that
a user uses, as well as the people they follow and who they are talking about.
3. Twitter gave up LinkedIn. LinkedIn did not give up Twitter.
Huuh…?
Now bear with me here because it gets a tiny bit complicated. Twitter put an end to their partnership with LinkedIn. This translates into a user’s impossibility to post an update from
their Twitter profile on their LinkedIn profile.
And now it gets interesting: users can still post to Twitter from LinkedIn. But not the other
way round. Get it?
Twitter to LinkedIn – no. LinkedIn to Twitter – yes.
How is this affecting you?
Many people are using Twitter as the main platform where they keep in touch with their
clients or friends. Because LinkedIn is a platform heavily centered around businesses and

business persons, it was easy to post something from your Twitter account directly to your
LinkedIn account without switching between the two platforms.
So from now on, if you have been using Twitter for this purpose in the past, don’t forget to
post your updates to LinkedIn as well for a better and more optimised online marketing
strategy.
4. LinkedIn introduced targeted updatesYou might think nothing interesting ever happens on LinkedIn. Wrong. Things do happen on
LinkedIn and they are all for the better of the communities out there. So the guys at LinkedIn
were thinking of a way to improve the users’ experience. And they came u p with targetedupdates.
What are targeted updates?
Use them and you can laser-target your audience. Using criteria such as company size,
industry, job function, seniority, or geography, you can get great accuracy with your updates.
Oh, and you can also include or exclude company employees. This means you can publish
updates directly to a user’s profile page.
Your company’s LinkedIn profile admins will be given the metrics of their targetedcampaigns 24 hours after they “did their job”. You can thus see the number of targeted
followers, clicks, shares, engagement, and impressions.

Guide To LinkedIn Company Profiles.
5. Foursquare? Never heard of it? Neither did I until not so long ago. But I must admit, it is an underrated
tool for online marketing experts. Although it does not enjoy such great popularity as it
should, I am sure things are going to change soon. Because it’s sooooo awesome!
Foursquare also launched some updates in 2012 and thus they opened a window towards a
more targeted audience for their users.
Are you a gourmand? No?
Well, you surely are a business owner, so I am thinking maybe you have a restaurant, a
nightclub, a fast food, or any other place where deliciousness unveils in the form of yummy
goodies.
Here’s where Foursquare comes in handy: it helps John and his friends find great places and
make the most of their visits. And your yumminess can be among these places.

So I was speaking about those updates… They are known as “Promoted Updates” and they
offer companies the possibility to appear among a user’s “Explore” tab (this doesn’tusually happens if that person has not visited that place before).
6. Google Hangouts on AirIf you have been reading this blog regularly, you know by now that behind this noisy
keyboard of mine hides a Google fan. Not freak or fanatic, but definitely a fan. So we are
going to talk a bit about Google and what they brought new to the internet in 2012.
Some months ago I wrote an article about how you can stay in touch with your VAs and there
I mentioned programs such as Skype or GoToMeeting.
No more, darling, no more. With Google Hangouts on Air you can create so much more than
a simple weekly meeting with your virtual staff – and you are doing it for free (unlike
GoToMeeting). While the feature is not new, it was not available to a wide range of users
until last year.
Use Google Hangouts on Air to organize free webinars for your followers, to make
company announcements or press conferences.
Heck, you can even record your own podcast with it! Your conversation is automatically
recorded and uploaded to your YouTube account – so less stress for you (although you can
change this option if you wish). You can interview up to 9 other people and you can
broadcast LIVE to a broaaaaad audience.
7. Google AuthorshipGoogle Authorship is a big big change that occurred in the world of SEO in 2012 and which
is still being perfected now. For starters, if you claim your Authorship you have greater
chances of having your website displayed among top search results . And the results also
feature a photo of you – the author - on the left side of the search result’s description.
For a complete and detailed article about Google Authorship I recommend you visit this
page where you will find everything you need to know and do to enjoy the benefits of being
the author of your articles.
8. Google+ CommunitiesLet me tell you what I use to increase the number of website visits… oh you guessed it
already? It’sGoogle+ Communities. Just like LinkedIn’s Groups or Facebook’s Groups,
these are places where you can hang out with other people who share the same interests asyou. You can talk business-related stuff… or whatever the community is about.

It is great if you want to offer your advice to people, because it helps you establish yourself
as the expert within your niche. You can also share your website’s latest articles, your specialoffers, and so on. It’s pretty cool and the people who hang out in communities are very
responsive!
Guess where I am going to share this article once it’s live…
9. YouTube introduced transcriptsHere we are, at the end of today’s long list of social media platforms whose teams worked
hard in 2012 to change our online marketing strategies for 2013… But all is for the better, I
say!
Our last stop today analyses YouTube and its new transcript option. No, you will not have to
transcribe anything – YouTube will do it for you. Below your videos you can find an area
looking pretty much like this one (I took it from a Super Savvy Business podcast):
Why is it so great?
Because very often people don’t have the patience to look at your entire video. With this
option they can skim through the transcript and they can see what they are missing even if
they are not watching the entire video.
Bonus platforms:I know it’s been a long list and you are probably pumped up with all the information, but I
know there’s always room for more. Now bear with me a little longer – these three babies

have not been born in 2013 (although GoodReads has recently been acquired by Facebook),
but they are SO awesome I couldn’t help myself not to share them with you in this article.
So, since you had the patience to go through all the 9 goodies above, here are my 3 bonuses
for you:
1. GoodReads
It so important that Facebook got their hands on it. Now you can sign in using Facebook or
you can create a profile of your own. If you published a book (or several books) you can be
listed as an author and you can thus become an expert in your niche.
People can add quotes from your book, they can comment on your writing, and you can
interact with them.
Here’s how to use the Author program.
2. Google Commerce
If you are thinking about selling your products online, you might want to try this feature from
Google. It is called Google Commerce and, as the name suggests, it gives you the possibility
to sell your stuff. Online. Through a customizable website address.
Here’s what you need to do to create your own Google Commerce website.
3. Academia.edu
Highly underrated, it can successfully replace Scribd. Personally, I have an account on both
Scribd and on Academia, but what I like the most about the latter is that I receive an email
every time someone ends up on one of my PDF documents. I get the keywords that got them
there, as well as statistics about my documents’ place on search results.
Here’s a screenshot of what you can get for free from them:
