Quality of Life

• The degree of enjoyment and satisfaction experienced in everyday life.

• This included that standard of living and non-material things such as political and religious freedoms.

Standard of Living

• Level of material comfort as measured by the goods. Services, and luxuries available to an individual, community, or nation.

• What that really means is the stuff you can get and the stuff your used to!

• How does our standard of living influence globalization?

• How about historically?

How would you rate you quality of life?

• Keep in mind the stories we have looked at?• Can you be what you want within reason?• Can you go where you want?• Eat, believe, say, feel, date who you want?

• How about others we have looked at?

Understanding Quality of Life

• We all have access to clean water and a general quality of life.

• However, some places have a bid difference between the populations quality of life.

• Even in Fort McMurray, this is known as Disparity.

• However, it can often be far greater in other places globally, can we think of any?

Some Examples

• 17% of the world’s population do not have access to clean water.

• Nearly 2/3 of the these people live in Asia. • In Sub-Saharan Africa, 42% of the population

do not have access to clean water.

Let’s think about the disparity between our lives and the lives of someone in a slum.

• In a western sense, a person’s wealth is depended on how much money they have.

• How much stuff they own. • So, the wealth of a nation is depended on how

much money a country has or will have.• Gross Domestic Product.

Human Development Index

• GDP per capita.• Life Expectancy.• Knowledge Index.

Human Rights, Democracy, and Globalization

• The Universal Declaration of human rights:– Political Right: to Vote– Civil Rights: Freedom and Opinion– Equality Rights: fair and safe working conditions.– Economic Rights: Free From Discriminaiton. – Social Rights: Education and Healthcare.– Cultural rights: speak you language and practise

your culture.
