US society and the organization of schooling at key historical moments—– Colonial (1789ff) agricultural> one room school

house; – key function: “democratic citizenship”– Early Industrial (1865—1910)> “common school”; – key function: assimilation of new immigrants– Developed Industrial (1910-1950s): > “school as

factory”; – key function: preparation for capitalism– The critique of the factory model
