Overview

Date: Monday, April 15th, 2019

Time: 6:00pm – 9:30pm

Cost of Registration: $20

Registration Includes:

o Event T-Shirt (Available for the first 25 registrants)

Competition Categories*:

o Beginner (Up to 5.8)

o Intermediate (5.9-5.10d)

o Advanced (5.11 and Higher)

*Climbers will be placed into a category upon the completion of the event climbing period.

Climber Information:

o Sign-in and equipment pick-up will be available at 5:45pm on the day of the event.

o There will be a mandatory informational meeting at 6:00pm for all competitors.

Spectator Information:

o Free facility entry. Cannot participate

in any programming or use any fitness

equipment, and must stay in the 2nd

floor bridge area surrounding the

climbing wall.

o Must arrive with competitor, or meet

competitor at facility entrance to

vouch for spectator entering.

o Must sign a facility waiver, and wear a

visitor ID bracelet.



Climbing Competition Rulebook

I. Eligibility

All current Illinois State University students, faculty, staff, and Recreation Center members are eligible.

Participants must have a current ISU I.D. or user pass to enter the Recreation Center in order to participate. NO

EXCEPTIONS!

II. Climbers Code of Conduct

We expect that all competitors will treat other climbers, judges, belayers, and volunteers with respect, and

represent themselves well. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from an event.

Competitors must make no attempt to manipulate the regulations and rules to their advantage or to the

advantage of any competitor.

It is the responsibility of all competitors to understand and abide by the regulations, rules and spirit of good

sportsmanship. Competitors must accept, subject to the official appeals procedure, the decision of the official

judges without question or protestation and exercise self-restraint at all times.

We encourage you to share your love of climbing by encouraging and supporting your fellow competitors.

Try hard, have fun, and remember that, in climbing, the real competition is with you.

IV. Top Rope Competition Rules

Roped climbers will have a maximum of 5 minutes on a climb.

If a climber falls, their attempt ends and they are lowered. The climber must start at the back of the line for their

next attempt.

Climbers will belay each other. Once the current climber is finished, the belayer for that climber becomes the next

climber.

All belayers MUST be certified to belay by Adventure Program staff prior to the competition. Belayers or

climbers exhibiting unsafe practices will be replaced.

o Climbers without a belay certification will communicate their place in line with the next belayer.



Top Rope Rules Continued…

The belayer must leave an appropriate amount of slack in the rope at all times. Tension on the rope may be

deemed as an artificial aid or hindrance to a competitor and may result in disqualification of the attempt.

A climber’s attempt shall be deemed to have started when both feet have left the ground.

The climber must CONTROL the finish hold on a roped route, but is not required to match hands to receive points

for completion of that route.

o The climber must establish contact with the route judge so that the judge may verify control of the finish

hold.

Weighting of the rope will be considered a fall.

V. Climbing

Climbers may try as many routes as they wish and as time allows.

Climbers declare their intention to attempt a route by handing their scorecard to the route judge and specifying the

route number.

Rules and instructions regarding a route may be given by the Route Judge prior to a competitor’s attempt if asked

for.

The entire surface of the climbing wall shall be permitted to be used for climbing with the following

exceptions:

o Bolt hangers and quickdraws are not permitted to be used as hand holds or foot holds at any

time. If hangers or quickdraws are used this will be considered a fall and the climber will be

lowered.

o The adjacent painted walls that frame the climbing wall may not be used.

o Certain features are excluded from a route as specified by the route information attached to the

first hold.

Only designated holds and features are permitted for climbing each route.

o Certain features of the climbing wall may be excluded from certain routes. Route information must be

reviewed by the climber prior to attempting the route. The Route Judge can answer questions prior to the

attempt. Use of these features will result in an immediate lower and will count as a failed attempt.

The Route Judge may order an attempt ended if they decide that to proceed further would contravene the

regulations regarding safety of the competitor.

The refusal by a competitor to obey the instruction of a Route Judge to terminate their attempt on a route shall

result in the disqualification of the competitor.

Upon successful completion of a route, the judge will award the appropriate number of points and note this award

on the score card.



Climbing Rules Continued…

Climbers will be given a “five minute warning” near the end of the event. At the end of those five minutes any

climbers still on the wall (on an official attempt) will be allowed to continue.

o The Adventure Program Coordinator may choose to allow competitors with their scorecards in a queue, to

also make one last attempt (time permitting). Otherwise, climbers MUST turn in their scorecard at the end

of the 5 minute warning.

VI. Scoring

This is a flash/red point format competition – points are awarded if the climber completes each route without

falling. Climbers are allowed as many attempts on each route as they can, however each attempt is worth fewer

points.

o Each route will be worth a specific number of points based on its anticipated difficulty.

o The number of points awarded is based on the number of attempts used to complete the route. Beyond

three attempts, no additional points are taken off.

o Competitors are awarded the entire point value for a flash (first-try ascent), 90% of the point value for

success on the second attempt and 80% of the point value for any later ascent.

o If a competitor’s score is substantially above everyone else in their category, they may be bumped into the

next higher category. This decision is made at the discretion of the Adventure Program Coordinator.

Each competitor’s top 3 route scores will be used to calculate the climber’s final score. All the competitors

completed climbs and final category placement may also be used. The higher the points, the harder the route.

VII. Tiebreakers

Ties will be decided in favor of the climber who used fewer attempts, i.e. falls will break ties. If a tie still remains

climbers will climb a route of the next highest category. The climber with control of the most holds wins.

VIII. Technical Incidents

Spinning holds or other technical incidents must be declared by the climber AT THE TIME OF ITS

OCCURRENCE.

A technical incident is:

o A broken or spinning hold

o Tape stuck to a shoe

o An open wound

o Anything else that creates an unfair disadvantage to a competitor that is not the result of an action on the

part of the competitor

o If a technical incident occurs, the climber may re-climb the route from the beginning without penalty. The

climber can decide to restart the route immediately or nullify the attempt and go to the back of the line.



Technical Incidents Continued…

It is the climber's responsibility to ensure that his/her clothing, chalk bag, and other equipment is properly

secured. There are no grounds for a technical if the above-mentioned items impede the climber.

If the competitor feels he/she is the subject of an unfair disadvantage while climbing, he/she must declare so

WHILE ON THE ROUTE. If the route judge agrees that the incident has created an unfair disadvantage, the

competitor will be lowered to the ground and will be allowed another attempt on the route, with no penalty

incurred. If the route judge does not agree that a technical incident has occurred, the competitor must continue

his/her current attempt on the route.

If a competitor does not agree with the score, the competitor must appeal to the Adventure Program Coordinator

immediately.

IX. Disqualification

The following infringements may result in the immediate disqualification of the competitor from the competition:

o The use of non-approved equipment.

o The use of any knot other than a figure 8 follows through or improperly clipping into the belay system.

o Untying from the rope while climbing.

o Distracting or interfering with any competitor who is preparing for, or attempting, a route.

o Distracting or interfering with any judges while they are carrying out their duties.

o Failure to comply with the instructions of the official judges and/or the organizer’s officials.

o Any Student Code of Conduct violation.
