Francis Bacon, a leading proponent of natural philosophy and scientific methodology, was an English lawyer, philosopher and scientist. Having written highly influential works on law, state and religion, politics and science, Bacon was an early pioneer of the scientific method who created “empiricism” and inspired the scientific revolution.

Born on January 22, 1561 in Strand, London, Francis Bacon’s father, Nicholas Bacon, was a famous English politician and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Bacon was mostly homeschooled in his early years. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1573 when he was merely 12. He also attended the University of Poitiers.

Francis Bacon is often called the father of modern science. He initiated a massive reformation of every process of knowledge for the advancement of learning divine and human. As the creator of empiricism, Francis Bacon formulated a set of empirical and inductive methodologies, for setting off a scientific inquiry, known as the Baconian method. His call for a plotted procedure of inquiring things, with an empiricist naturalistic approach, had a profound impact on the rhetorical and theoretical framework for science.

Bacon also served as the philosophical inspiration behind the progress of the Industrial age. He always suggested that scientific work should be done for charitable reasons, and for relieving mankind’s misery with the invention of useful things.

Bacon also authored several books and essays that advocated reformations of the law, and many of them regarding religious, moral and civil meditations.

Francis Bacon was appointed a Lord Chancellor in 1618. Unfortunately, he was accused of bribery and was forced to resign, after which Bacon retired to his estate continuing with his literary, scientific, and philosophical work. He died of pneumonia in Highgate, London in 1626. Bacon was 65 years old.

Puddles of water and thick mud are not the only problems flood victims in Manado, North Sulawesi, face, as looters are also reportedly wandering around housing areas.

“Some of my valuables are gone. I fled to safer ground when the floods hit and I had no time to pack up all my important belongings,” Pengki, a resident of Tateli village in Mandolang district, Minahasa, said on Saturday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The flooding also caused Bailey Bridge in the Bolevard area to collapse. The collapsed bridge cut off traffic from Malalayang to the city center, thereby affecting the city’s economy.

The Army deployed personnel on Saturday to help the city administration rebuild the bridge, Antara news agency reported.

Besides flash floods in Manado, landslides also hit Tinoor, which connects Manado and Tomohon. The road from Manado to Tomohon was cut off, while several bridges in Minahasa broke. On Saturday afternoon, the search and rescue team found the body of a woman identified as Linda Tan, 61. There are still around 15 people missing in the area.

Meanwhile, Public Works Deputy Minister Hermanto Dardak said that the ministry was set to heighten the dike around Tondano Lake to prevent further flash floods in Manado and would carry out a river normalization program.

He added that the ministry planned to build a dam with a capacity of 23 million cubic-meters. “We have set aside a budget of Rp2.8 billion [US$231,577] for land acquisition and another Rp 700 million for the certification process,” Hermanto, said as quoted by Antara. The Meller's chameleon is the largest of the chameleons not native to Madagascar. Their stout bodies can grow to be up to two feet (two-thirds of a meter) long and weigh more than a pound (one-half kilogram).

Meller's distinguish themselves from their universally bizarre-looking cousins with a single small horn protruding from the front of their snouts. This and their size earn them the common name "giant one-horned chameleon."

They are fairly common in the savanna of East Africa, including Malawi, northern Mozambique, and Tanzania. Almost one-half of the world’s chameleons live on the island of

Madagascar. As with all chameleons, Meller's will change colors in response to stress and to communicate

with other chameleons. Their normal appearance is deep green with yellow stripes and random black spots. Females are slightly smaller, but are otherwise indistinguishable from males.

They subsist on insects and small birds, using their camouflage and a lightning-fast, catapulting tongue, which can be up to 20 inches (50 centimeters) long, to ambush prey.

Exotic pet enthusiasts often attempt to keep Meller's chameleons as pets. However, they are highly susceptible to even the slightest level of stress and are very difficult to care for in captivity. In the wild, they can live as long as 12 years.

The value of education for tenagersEducation is the key to reaching our potential. Education is our best investment for earning

money. Without a good, education foundation, "the deck is stacked against you".If a teenager wishes a better life style than the average person struggling to make ends meet,

then a teen's abilities to produce value needs to be better than the average competition. A teenager's biggest asset is knowledge. Education is the gradient process of acquiring

knowledge. Knowledge gives a teenager the tools for rational reasoning and judgment. Knowledge helps a teen make better choices. Knowledge gives you options. The more knowledge a teen has, the more opportunities a teenager will have for making money.

When you do not pay attention in class, and you do not ensure that you understand what is being taught, you put at risk that field of opportunity for making money. When you treat all your subjects in this manner, you are jeopardizing all these fields of knowledge as a choice of opportunities that you could have had, if you had put in more effort.

When you graduate from school, what fields of knowledge do you have to choose from for making money? At this point you may be left with very few options. Is this the time to start learning money making skills? Trying to make money, with very limited skills is a tough way to start your life.

Teenagers that have gotten a solid education foundation, will be the ones most prepared to learn advanced skills necessary for making good money. Teenagers that dedicated themselves to getting a solid education foundation will be the ones that have the most money making opportunities available to them. They will be the ones with the better life style and less unemployment.

We have included this article about the importance of education for teenagers; because it is the knowledge that is learned during the teenage years that gives teens more options for money making

The following text is for questions 35 to 38.Why are wild animals disappearing?

Have you ever heard of a bird called the crested ibis? Also known in Japanese as "toki," the crested ibis is a large white bird with a red face and long black beak. Its more striking features include the beautiful pink color seen on the underside of its wings, which measure up to 140 centimeters (about 4.5 feet) across, and the long crest, or tuft, of feathers on the back of its neck. The crested ibis once lived in many places throughout East Asia, but their numbers declined rapidly in the second half of the 20th century.

People in Japan have been trying a number of different things to keep the crested ibis alive. They set up a special facility to protect the birds and even adopted a bird from China to try and hatch new chicks artificially. But if these attempts fail and the last crested ibis dies, this type of bird will no longer exist anywhere on Earth. When a type of organism disappears for good, we say it becomes "extinct." There are roughly four major causes of extinction:

Killing too many animals is called overexploitation, which means to use too much of a resource. In Asia, rhinoceroses, deer, elephants, and big cats such as lions have all rapidly declined in number because people have been hunting them for the resources they provide: rhinoceroses and deer have horns that are used in medicine, elephants have tusks that can be used as a material for art and crafts, and lions and other big cats have beautiful fur coats.

The number of orangutans in Indonesia has dropped in the last 20 to 30 years, because farmers have cut down 80 percent of the forest where they live. Many other plants and animals have either gone extinct or shrunk in population because the unique environments in which they live no longer exist.

Some plants and animals die because humans poison the water or air they live in. One

species of toad in Costa Rica is thought to have gone extinct because of air and water pollution. Changes in the environment brought on by global warming and human activities can be a major threat to plants and animals.

Introducing a plant or animal that is originally from somewhere else can also cause extinction. One example is the Nile perch, an edible species of fish that was introduced to Lake Victoria in Africa. The Nile perch became invasive, eating many of the local fish and causing the extinction of about 200 local fish species.

The following text is for questions 39 to 42.

Is cosmetic surgery good or bad?Nowadays, cosmetic surgery has become more popular for modern people. Some people believe that it is a science to increase the beauty of a person. The basic aim of this surgery is to enhance the appearance of the individual that is done by altering the parts of the body. On the other hand, other people disagree with it. They said that cosmetic surgery involves risk which may cause serious diseases such as heart attack. Can we trust the surgeons? Can we change our appearance to whatever we want by getting cosmetic surgery?

Spoilt is surely not the term to describe the phenomenon you are describing. With the availability of cosmetic surgery these days, at a pretty price, people are realising that they can achieve anything they want if they work hard to achieve it. If anything this raises people’s aspirations. People want to work hard, save their money instead of squandering it and pay for what they really want. This is the working of a Protestant work ethic, the harder you work the more you can achieve. Spoilt is when you attain what you want with no work. But the vast amount of money and the days of recuperation required is a large price to pay for cosmetic surgery and people weigh up their options of whether cosmetic surgery means that much to them.

Cosmetic surgery only serves to show everyone how spoilt we are. What we want we can get, even if we pay thousands and go under the knife for it. When people feel that there is

Page 14: Soal Tryout 1 1314 3

TRYOUT-1-1314-A-KAB

- 15 -

- 15 -

Bahasa Inggris 1314 A

something that they cannot possibly achieve, it humbles them. The feeling of not being able to get something reiterates to us how we are merely mortal and not Gods. However, cosmetic surgery changes this perception. We feel we can achieve all we want to in life, and that only feeds our vanity and our spoilt natures. We would not want this for our children, so why do we want it for grown adults?

Bad or good cosmetic surgery relies on the purpose of doing it. If it is performed to reform the broken part of the body is recommended. However, if it just for fun it just wastes money and time.

The following text is for questions 43 to 46.The Legend of Hercules

Queen Alcmene (McKee), the estranged wife of King Amphitryon (Adkins), is visited by the goddess Hera. Hera tells Alcmene that according to divine prophecy, the latter will be the mother of Zeus's son, Hercules. Accordingly, after Alcmene is ravished by Zeus one night, their son is conceived.

Born as Alcides, Queen Alcmene shields her son's true identity for fear of the King finding out. As a buff young man, Alcides's life is not without drama. His brother Iphicles (Garrigan) is jealous of him and Amphitryon is suspicious of him. Later, Alcides's mother tells him that he is really Hercules. But Hercules is reluctant to accept his destiny as he is busy swooning over the charms of Hebe (Weiss). Hebe, however, has been promised to Hercules's brother Iphicles.

After being sent on a battle he cannot win, Hercules and commander Sotiris (McIntyre) are captured and the two get into a gladiator-type situation and fight for survival. What follows is Hercules's journey home to take the throne and be reunited with Hebe.

The film is a confused mishmash. Some of it looks like 300. Other bits resemble Gladiator. Some of the romance dialogues border between being cringe-worthy and laughable. For a film about Greeks, you'll hear a range of accents, ranging from Scottish to Russian.

The script keeps up the cheesiness. Example: during an argument, Alcmene tells Amphitryon

Page 15: Soal Tryout 1 1314 3

Bahasa Inggris 1314 A

how Hercules was conceived: "Zeus came into my bed and blasted me with his seed to spawn a son to end your reign."

While some of the effects are alright, the Nemean lion that Hercules battles in one scene looks comical. Hercules, looking like a beefcake at a toga party, starts using his superpowers only towards the end of the film. Too little, too late.
