There is a mystery and preciousness that we attach to pearls, yet despite what some
people believe, it has nothing to do with a grain of sand. Pearls, which have long been the
treasures of the wealthy, are often the products of dead worms, which remain entombed at the
center of the jewels, minute, translucent and ethereal.
Larval tapeworms drill into the flesh of mussels to use them as intermediate hosts
enrooted to their later hosts, which in most cases are ducks or fish. The mussels’ immune
systems battle the worms by encircling them in layer after layer of nacre, the same calcium-
based material found in the mussels’ shells. The invaders suffocate and then rest for eternity
encased in these tiny chambers.

CELEBRITIES AND THE MEDIA
It is a generally accepted truth these days that it is impossible either to become
or to remain (41)………….. without the help of the media. Politicians and those
who work in the (42) ………… industry make use of the press to court
publicity, and (43) ……………. are extremely aware that stories about
celebrities sell newspapers. However, there are (44) …………. concerns that the
media is abusing its position, and that it all too frequently acts (45) …………. in
its attempts to break a story. Remember the (46) ……………. on motorbikes
chasing Diana through Paris on the nights she died? Was that
(47) ………… behavior or were they quite within their rights to act as they did?
The media clearly does have an extremely (48) …………. role to play, but
should it be allowed to print (49) …………….. and Unresearched stories about
celebrities? Surely the media has an (50) ……………. to respect the privacy of
everyone and print the truth.
