“Eating Together”In the steamer is the trout

seasoned with slivers of ginger, two sprigs of green onion, and sesame oil.

We shall eat it with rice for lunch, brothers, sister, my mother who will

taste the sweetest meat of the head, holding it between her fingersdeftly, the way my father did

weeks ago. Then he lay downto sleep like a snow-covered road

winding through pines older than him, without any travelers, and lonely for no one.

In “Eating Together” Li-Young Lee, one of myfavorite poets, writes about partaking in mealstogether with his family. There is a strong sense ofcommunity related to particulars of scent and spiceand the idiosyncrasies of manner. Lee reveals theextraordinary in the ordinary as he recalls a typicalfamily meal. Something mysterious and beautifulexists in the moments of customary calm as lovedones share the common ritual of eating. And it’sno surprise that Lee’s memory of his father eatingtrout leads him to thinking about his father’s death.Because in the seemingly mundane and routineact of eating together, an extraordinary thing

happens – an occurrence of a sense ofconnectedness and belonging. And while themention of the death of Lee’s father sets amelancholy and sad tone, we are also reminded ofthe wonder and beauty that exists in closerelationships, established and furthered insomething as common as “eating together,” forLee’s father “lay down[…] lonely for no one.”

The focus of this issue of So6ix is food anddrink. Read through the articles to find outinformation about the best restaurants in OKC,numerous options for beer lovers, and healthyideas for dining out. And while you flip through thepages, consider eatingtogether with friends andfamily more often and bereminded of what ablessing it is to have theopportunity to dinetogether with thosewhom you love.

Have a great Octoberand a Happy Halloween!

a dream, or has your career just become "normal"?

JM: Everyday is a dream. I get to wake up and do

what I love everyday...I'm Miss American Dream,

and it's amazing, I definitely don't take it for

granted.

AC: You lived in the UK for a bit. How has the UK

music scene influenced or even changed your

style since you have returned to the States?

JM: Living in London was a great life experience. I

would go out and get into the underground

dance/electronic scene both in LDN and Paris. It

was cool to be exposed to different genres of

music like dubstep and grime, and as a whole it

most certainly influenced me as an artist and

songwriter.

AC: Earlier this year you opened for Britney Spears

and Nicki Minaj on the Femme Fatale tour. How

has Identity Festival tour differed creatively for

you?

JM: Well, I changed my show up a lot for ID fest by

not only changing my set list, but I also added a

few theatrical skits into my show. It was really cool

for me to get to play songs like "Flashback" that's

more down tempo with this nasty bass line

dub-steppy-groove to it.

AC: After your success with the Femme Fatale tour

should we expect any future collaborations with

Britney?

Jessie Malakouti is quickly climbing the ranks of

Pop superstardom. At only 22 years old, the

singer/songwriter has gained attention with her

dance hits, “Trash Me” and “Push It”. Her songs

have been featured regularly on MTV’s “The Hills”,

“Gossip Girl”, and “Supernatural”.

Jessie and her four mannequin bandmates can

definitely say they are living the dream by opening

for pop royalty Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj on

the Femme Fatale tour and then joining some of

music’s greats on the Identity Festival tour all in

less than a year. I recently chatted with the rising

popstar about her summer tours, future plans, and

of course, the mannequins!

Angelique Christina (AC): You have had a busy

summer, tell me how the Identity Festival was for

you?

Jessie Malakouti (JM): The Identity tour was so

much fun! It was like a giant traveling party. It was

great to be sharing the stage with some of my

favorite Dj's like Kaskade,  Steve Aoiki, and Rusko.

AC: What does a typical day look like for you?

JM: There isn't really anything "'typical" about my

days.  Some days I'm in the studio writing music,

and the next moment I'm on a plane flying across

the country to play a concert with Britney Spears.

That's what's so exciting about being an artist.

AC: You have been in show business since you

were a teenager. Do you still feel like you are living

JM: I love Britt and would be honored to

collaborate with her. Same goes for Nicki, both of

my femme fatales are wicked cool chicks, and I

think we'd make a killer song together!

AC: Your bandmates are four mannequins that are

said to have four distinct personalities. Tell me a

little bit about this.

JM: Yes, 73 plays guitar and is a bad ass. He

doesn't take sh*t from anyone and has a lot of

energy. 12 plays keys and is the smooth, cool toy

boy. He's always pulling the ladies. 4 1/2 is our

resident nerd. He plays bass and is always fixing

my computer for me. And 25 programs all of my

sicktastic drums you hear!

AC: Who do you consider a major influence in your

musical career?

JM: I am really influenced by Madonna. I love

everything she does. I would love to have a career

like hers. I also love a 90's alternative rock band

called "Letters To Cleo"- they really influenced my

songwriting.

AC: How has the transition been from having

bandmates in Shut Up Stella and going solo for

you? No offense to the mannequins, of course.

JM: Toy Boys are perfect because they don't talk

back and they don't get in the way of my creative

vision.

AC: Your dance hits have been

featured on the CW, MTV, and

even films. What's next for you?

JM: You can expect to hear

Jessie and The Toy Boys taking

over your local radio station :) Angelique Christina

little ones to Booville from 6-8pm. They can do the

Monster Mash through the pumpkin patch and

sugar up and down the trick-or-treat trail. “Project:

Terror” is a pyrotechnic stunt show that will keep

you wide-eyed and on the edge of your seat. The

Nightmare Haunted House opens its doors at 7pm

and is definitely not for small children. This year

supernatural psychic Madame Divine will be on

hand to tell your future.

THE BAR SCENE, ADULTS ONLY

If you have no rugrats to taxi along the candy

trail, or if they will be occupied with church lock-ins

or a costumed mob of their cousins, this is the night

for you to let off some freaky steam. A number of

bars in OKC have some freaky fun planned for

Saturday night (Oct. 29th). Cafe Nova's annual

Halloween bash begins at midnight with music and

costumes and drinks aplenty. Other bars will be

getting in the spirit earlier. Parties start at 8pm

downtown at Mickey Mantle's, Mardi Gras, and

CityWalk. You can also check out Buddha Tao's

huge dance floor, and don't forget Groovys, which

always takes you back in time for a good time.

Expect costume contests, djs, and plenty of

generous bar specials. So come out, come out

wherever you are.

STORYBOOK FOREST

Inside Spring Creek Park at Arcadia Lake,

Storybook Forest is the perfect Halloween

gathering for the youngest goblins. Adults dressed

as characters from much loved but not too scary

traditional tales tell ghost stories around a campfire

while the young-ins roast marshmallows and sip

hot chocolate. A hay ride and game area make this

the best pick for pre-schoolers. This event runs

from October 24th to 31st and the time is

tentatively set for 5:30-8:30pm. Call the Arcadia

Lake Project Office at 216-7471 for directions to the

lake or more information.

Summer is done and fall has officially fallen.

With the cooler weather come the yearly ghosts,

witches, goblins, and trolls on the hunt for candy

and mischief. It's time for all the tricks and treats

that Halloween has to offer. Oklahoma City,

Lawton, and Shawnee have plenty of safe, fun, and

off-the-beaten path activities for the kid in us all.

GHOULS GONE WILD

The 5th annual Oklahoma Gazette Halloween

Parade starts at 7pm on Saturday, October 29th.

The Grand Marshal will be theSpyFM.com, and

2011 promises even more floats and foolish ghouls

than years past. The Flaming Lips will be away

touring, so our very own Ambassadors of

Psychedelia will be filling in. The restaurants and

clubs in Midtown will have open house specials to

surprise and delight. This year’s parade will take

the same route as last year, just in the reverse

direction. The fun begins at NE 3rd and E.K.

Gaylord Boulevard, runs right through Automobile

Alley, and ends at NW 12th and Walker. This freaky

festival is staffed entirely by volunteers, so don't

forget to download a volunteer sign-up form at

www.okgazette.com to guarantee a front row seat.

FRIGHTFEST AT FRONTIER CITY

Frightfest runs every Friday, Saturday, and

Sunday of October. This event is kid-friendly by

day and caters to a more adult audience when

night falls. Admission to all the Frightfest activities

are included in your Frontier City daily ticket price,

with the exception of the haunted house that is a

mere five dollars more. Tickets run $25-$30, and

children under three are admitted free. Bring the

HAUNT THE ZOO FOR HALLOWEEN

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden

will present the 27th annual Haunt the Zoo for

Halloween event October 26th through October

31st. This “just right without the fright” festival

begins at 6:30pm each night, come rain or shine.

The kids will be greeted by volunteers in character

costumes at the Zoo's Global Plaza and then it's

time to scavenge the booths and decorations for

treats and some spooky fun. Zoo security

personnel remain on hand throughout the evening

and the candy provided for trick-or-treaters is

stored securely. This long time local event was

created specifically with younger children in mind.

SHAWNEE'S BOO ON BELL STREET FALLFAMILY FUN FESTIVAL

Visit a bygone era of terror this fall in historic

downtown Shawnee. Halloween in Shawnee,

Oklahoma is always worth the drive and two brand

new events make it even more inviting this year.

Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children

under twelve, though adult supervision is

recommended. Brilliantly crafted by the Shawnee

High School Drama and Speech Department,

“Silver Screams” makes you the star of a horror

film. Join a ghost hunting team in “The Paranormal

Experience,” a tour through downtown Shawnee's

most haunted historical building. Be advised that

this event is billed as too intense for children.

Always appropriate for kids is the ever popular

mixture of murder, mayhem, and urban legends in

“Fright Night at the Ritz Theatre,” which shows only

once this year from 8-10pm on October 28th at

$7.00 for adults and $5.00 for

children and seniors. Discount

ticket packages are available

for multiple events. You won't

want to miss the Boo Rod Car

Show, carriage rides, or

costume contests. Beth Ann Mock

wishes in the event of your death. Wills, trusts,

powers of attorney, advanced medical directives,

deeds, and other estate planning vehicles all

should be in place to appropriately dispose of your

property.

If you have a liability, such as from a motor

vehicle accident, business dispute, etc., and

someone else is obligated to pay for it, your assets

are protected. It is for this reason that appropriate

insurance policies and coverage amounts are

tremendously important for anyone with assets

that may be available to satisfy a judgment.

Of course, these basics only begin to scratch the

surface of asset protection. If this issue is a

concern, you should consult a competent attorney

that is committed to spending the time to get to

you know and your needs. Asset protection for

high net worth individuals will be discussed in

future articles.

John Graves is an Oklahoma City attorney and

principal in Graves Legal Group. For more

information only and should not

be considered legal advice. An

attorney/client relationship is only

formed after a written

engagement letter is executed.

Discussions of asset protection usually conjure

up offshore accounts and foreign money wires.

While these may be part of a complex, and legal,

asset protection plan, they are rare. The subject

of this article is practical asset protection that

applies to everyone, from just starting out to

burning hundreds for fun. Protecting assets for the

vast majority of people involves planning that

requires no particularly difficult legal maneuvers.

Oklahoma state law provides for numerous

statutory exemptions, each with their own

particular limitations and vagaries. In addition to

twenty head of sheep and one hundred chickens,

a person’s primary residence and retirement

accounts are exempt. Because these two classes

of assets make up the majority of a typical families’

wealth, their assets are protected until liquidated

or sold.

Protected retirement accounts are not only

401(k) and IRA accounts; they also include

annuities, state pension contributions, and many

more. The statutory language is one on inclusion,

your retirement plan is probably an exempt one.

The exemption on a person’s primary residence is

limited only by the amount of land on which it sits.

If it’s inside a City or Town, the exemption is limited

to one acre. If outside the limits of a City or Town

the exemption is limited to 160 acres. If you use

your home for business, other limitations apply.

While none of these “homestead exemptions” are

effective against a mortgage holder or lien from a

contractor, it does prevent other creditors from

forcing you to sell your home to satisfy debts.

Estate planning is also an important aspect of

salad as an appetizer instead.

GET IT TO-GO

Request that half of your meal be put in a to-go

box when you order. This not only keeps your

portions in control, but also gives you a meal for

the next day!

SAY “NO THANK YOU”

When offered a selection of sodas and juices,

just say “no thank you” and order a water with your

meal. In most cases, these beverages are high

calorie and should be avoided when possible.

JUST THE STARTERS

Order an appetizer instead of a full meal.

However, try to avoid appetizers loaded with

cheese or heavy sauces. They can be high in

calories and fat.

DIP IT!

Request that all dressings and condiments be

placed on the side. Dipping your salad into the

dressing using a fork as opposed drenching your

salad can reduce your caloric intake.

GRILLIN’ TIME!

Pass on fried menu selections. Look for grilled,

broiled, or baked selections instead. Not only will

this reduce the fat and calories, you will enjoy the

fresh taste of these selections as well!

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be

challenging, but you will appreciate the fruits of

your labor in the end! Remember it’s not about

living to eat, but eating to live! Happy dining!

In a world where “supersize it” and “burritos as

big as your head” are seemingly the norm, it can

be difficult to stick to a healthy eating regimen that

includes portion control. Unfortunately, this

mentality can equate to calories adding up very

quickly and your once flawless six-pack

transforming into a keg! Luckily, there is a silver

lining to this rather heavy cloud. With a

combination of a healthy exercise schedule,

nutritious food choices, and portion control, you

don’t have to give up on enjoying dining out to

maintain (or gain) a great physique!

Dining out can be challenging when you are

trying to lose weight because of excessive portions

and limited healthy eating selections in many

restaurants. Research has even linked the

frequency of dining out with the increased body

mass index. Here are some helpful strategies for

balancing dining out and a healthy lifestyle.

LEARN TO SHARE

Split a meal with a friend. Not only is this a great

strategy for portion control, it can be great for your

pocketbook as well!

down a bucket of wings or binge on a pepperoni

pizza in bed just like the rest of us. I’m reminded of

that old Pantene shampoo commercial where a

barefaced, straggly hair model would say right

before her on-screen transformation: “Don’t hate

me because I’m beautiful; in the morning I look just

like you.” Phew.

I encourage everyone to either look in your

closet and see if there is a garment that is just a

little snug or small and pull it out. This is your new

goal point. Or if you are like me, you would rather

head to your favorite shopping destination and

pick out a new outfit. Something you really love.

Next, try it on in a size smaller. If

it is a realistic goal that you can

meet, then this should be your

new outfit to try to get into. Now

don’t just starve yourself, but

make small changes like taking a

walk three times a week or laying

off sodas.

The fashion set has been crowding eateries in

Lincoln Center every day for the past week — but

not for a big greasy burger filled with cheesy

goodness and bacon. Rather, it’s been the much

more predictable spinach salad with Parmesan

cheese, spiced pecans, pear and vinaigrette. But

there’s a twist; they’re splitting the salads. These

restaurants typically expect that a four-top table

will do about $130, but with the fashion crowd, they

only do about $70. The owners weren’t

complaining because the business was fantastic

this past week. Also, the fashion flamingoes tip

pretty well, even if they only eat like sparrows.

This posed a really interesting question to me.

“If we could make Oklahomans more fashionable,

could we also make them healthier and leaner?”

This is a challenge that intrigues me. Just like

Oprah and so many others, I have dealt with weight

issues my whole life. I am the first to say, “Feel

beautiful at whatever weight you are,” but I am also

guilty of wanting to shed a few pounds to get into

that pair of designer jeans or a swimsuit. I would

like to positively promote a healthier lifestyle

through fashion.

The public is increasingly fascinated by what

celebrities and models eat. The public’s more

recent fixation with celebrity eating is about how

the trend has shifted to starlets telling us not about

what they don’t eat, but how much they do eat!

And, we love to hear it. There’s even a new

acronym to describe this fascination: DIPE, which

stands for Documented Instance of Public Eating.

bleaching, and theoretically only the normal

colored of skin remains. Because specifically

targets brown or red, depending on the settings of

light that are chosen, dark skin with discoloration

(i.e. Afro-American skin) is not appropriate for

AFT/IPL and should never be done.

AFT or IPL is the gold standard for

photorejuvenation. This FDA-cleared, patented

technology provides dramatic results for a variety

of benign conditions, including age spots,

sun-induced freckles, symptoms of rosacea,

birthmarks, unsightly veins, acne scarring and

other blemishes — even unwanted hair.

Why choose AFT over other treatment options?

Laser resurfacing and deep chemical peels

often send patients into hiding, as they wait for

redness and swelling to subside.

Microdermabrasion addresses many skin

irregularities, but it’s not effective against all

complexion problems including redness, flushing

and broken capillaries. Face lifts and other surgical

procedures are far too invasive for younger

patients and "baby boomers" who simply want to

revitalize their appearance without recovery

downtime.

If you have a problem with brown spot or red

spot pigmentation, AFT/IPL may be the right choice

for you. Or at least, you will feel less compelled

to have to match your exotic purse and shoes to

your skin.

Dr. Harvey Jenkins is a Harvard-trained

Orthopedist & Spine specialist,

practicing in South Oklahoma

City. He is a Wellness Blogger

and is also Owner /Medical

Director of BodyTrends, the

ElectroSpa, Salon, Studio &

Boutique in OKC and Tulsa.

Do you happen to have areas of increased

pigments, red spots or brown spots on your skin?

If so, don’t worry, a lot us do. In fact, we all have

them. Brown spots and red spots look great on a

designer purse or shoes. They also seem

appropriate on animals at the Zoo. However, they

don’t “play so well” on Human Skin. Spots, areas

of red or brown hyperpigmentation (increased

pigmentation/coloration) or abnormal pigmentation

are usually the result of sun damage, normal aging,

or genetics. Even though they are commonplace

and widespread, people tend to be very

self-conscious about them, especially when they

occur on the face and hands. They feel that these

“imperfections” detract from their appearance and

attractiveness. Nationally, and in OKC, red spot and

brown spot removal are popular reasons to visit

the local med spa, esthetic medicine specialist or

dermatologist.

WHAT IS AFT OR IPL? AND HOW CAN IT HELP?

Advanced Fluorescent Technology (AFT),

otherwise known as Intense Pulsed Light, skin

treatments using the Photo-rejuvenation process

represent a breakthrough in age-defying skin care,

which are specific treatments that fall under the

heading of Photo-facial treatment. This new

technique treats skin damage non-invasively —

there is no disruption of the skin's epidermal

surface. AFT treatments address the effects of

photo-aging and sun damage with low risk of

complications and no recovery time. You can have

it done over your lunch hour in as little as 20

minutes.

AFT works in a way that is similar to how laser

works. The light of a specific wavelength and

intensity is emitted into the area of discoloration or

increased pigmentation. The excitement of the

colored target leads to the destruction or

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

Soups are great for lunch, between-meal

snacks, or paired with dinner. And homemade

soups in the fall and winter are particularly

satisfying. However, they can be labor intensive, so

we've made it fast and easy for you. Purchase

some fresh, fall butternut squash and enjoy.

Ingredients:

1 small butternut squash peeled, seeded,

and cubed

1 medium onion, finely diced

3 cloves of minced garlic

1-2 cups chicken stock

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon fresh thyme

1 tablespoon chili powder or cayenne pepper

pinch of cumin

salt and pepper to taste

In a large stock pot, heat the olive oil. Add the

onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook

over medium heat until the onions are soft, but not

brown. Add the squash and a little more salt and

pepper, cooking until tender. Add enough chicken

stock to cover the squash along with the cumin,

cayenne or chili powder, and a tad more salt and

pepper if you like. Boil. Let simmer for another

20-30 minutes and serve.

GRANNY PUD'S TANGY CHICKEN DINNER

thickly, and toss them over the chicken. Pour just

as much French dressing as you want to all over it.

Cook for an hour. Serve over boiled egg noodles.

SPICY BAKED CHICKEN WINGS

Now it's time for some tried and true tailgating

eats. As chicken wings are a game day standard,

that's where we'll start. The fact that you bake

these instead of frying them saves a lot of time and

mess, so you'll never run out.

Ingredients:

5 pounds frozen chicken wings

½ cup butter

2 cups Louisiana hot sauce

2 tablespoons white vinegar

1 tablespoon flour

Blue Cheese dressing (of course!)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Layer the

frozen wings in a single layer in a shallow baking

pan. Bake for 25 minutes, then turn. Heat the

butter, Louisiana hot sauce, and vinegar, whisking

it until the butter melts completely. Slowly add the

flour and stir the mixture until it's as thick as you

want it. Drain the wings, and let them cool for a

few minutes. Pour the sauce over your wings and

toss.

HOT RED'S FUNKY TATER SALAD

Let's face it: potato salad is boring. The good

news? Hot Red's is anything but!

Ingredients:

2-3 pounds red potatoes

2 small onions, chopped in thick pieces

½ cup spicy mustard

½ cup mayonnaise

½ teaspoon dill

1 tablespoon curry powder

Tabasco to taste

1 tablespoon pickled jalapenos

Cut the potatoes into healthy chunks and boil.

Drain and add the mustard, mayonnaise, dill, onion,

curry powder, and Tabasco. Mix well and top with

the jalapeno peppers.

RED ONION DIP

You can't go wrong with dip for a game day

snack. This onion dip takes almost no time to

make and puts that congealed, inedible goop

available in the grocery store to shame.

Ingredients:

3 small red onions, finely chopped

2 cups beef stock

3 cloves minced garlic

1 teaspoon fresh chopped parsley

salt and pepper to suit your taste

1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

1 cup sour cream

Cook the onions, beef stock, garlic, salt, and

pepper in a skillet over medium heat until the

onions have absorbed almost all of the stock. Let

the mixture cool, then stir in the

vinegar, sour cream, and parsley.

Serve chilled with veggies, chips,

or baguette slices.

You're done. Everyone's been

fed, and you weren't too busy

cooking to enjoy the game!

LANDSHARK LAGER

Landshark Lager is perfect for the

beach or island lifestyle, but it’s also

simply a great-tasting beer. It’s lighter

than most lagers you’ll find, and it’s very

drinkable with its refreshing taste.

BUSCH

Busch is another simple

American-style lager, popular for its

refreshing, easy-drinking taste. It’s a pale

beer with a light body. It’s best served

cold, and most enjoy it from the can.

NATURAL LIGHT

Brewed with both American and

imported hops, this American-style lager

is light bodied and has a balanced,

refreshing taste. It’s brewed longer,

meaning it has fewer calories and an

easy-drinking character. Side note:

Natural Light was Anheuser-Busch’s very

first low-calorie light beer.

ROLLING ROCK

First brewed in 1939, this extra-pale

lager has a unique taste with a subtle

hop finish. It is best served in a tall, thin

tumbler and goes great with chicken,

pork tenderloin, and pepper jack cheese.

BUD ICE

Anheuser-Busch uses its special

ice-brewing process to make a beer that

has a rich, smooth taste. Bud Ice is the

first American draft beer to be ice

brewed, and with its slightly sweet flavor

and smooth finish, it has become very

popular.

KIRIN ICHIBAN

This imported Japanese-style pilsner

has a full-bodied, refreshing taste. Made

with the finest ingredients, Kirin is

brewed with a special “first press”

brewing process, giving the beer more

flavor. The smooth taste of Kirin Ichiban

makes it a perfect match for Asian

dishes.

O’DOUL’SFor those seeking a flavorful malt

beverage without the alcohol, O’Doul’s isone of the best tasting non-alcoholicbeers available. It is brewed as atraditional, premium beer, and then itundergoes distillation to extract thealcohol content. By doing this withoutheat, the beer maintains much of itsoriginal, slightly sweet flavor andbalance.

REDBRIDGERedbridge is a specialty, full-bodied

lager that is gluten-free. Redbridge has aunique fruity aroma balanced with amoderately hopped finish. Redbridge isbest served in a glass with a wideopening or pilsner-style glass, allowingthe beer to showcase its foam head. Pairthis beer with robust meats such as lambor veal.

WILD BLUEWild Blue is another specialty beer

offered by Anheuser-Busch. It is afruit-infused lager and has a delightfulripe blueberry flavor and aroma and isfinished with a tart kick. It goes great withhighly flavorful dishes like porktenderloin or rib roast. It also goes greatwith fruit salads.

MICHELOB GOLDEN DRAFTThis American-style lager is a premium

draft beer with light fruit aromas and amedium-bodied, sweet taste. Thecold-filtered lager has a smooth finishand is only available is select USmarkets.

ZIEGENBOCKThis regional specialty beer has a

smooth, full flavor. It’s an easily drinkablebock beer with a malty flavor and deepamber color. ZeigenBock also earned itscredentials by winning bronze at the2006 Great American Beer Festival.

HEFEWEIZENHefeweizen is an unfiltered

American-style wheat beer with a cloudyappearance and a slight citrus aroma. The taste is crisp and has a lemon finish. Most like to add a lemon slice to enhancethe flavor, which makes it go great withsalads, seafood, and fruit desserts. Jacqueline Larocco

may be part and parcel of the

situation.  Remember, you don’t necessarily have

to spend a lot of money to make a good

impression. Leading by example is necessary

between the 9th and 13th.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)

After the 6th  you’ll feel better about things as

Venus enters your zone of family affairs on the 9th.

This is an excellent time to focus your attention on

family, relatives, your personal history and your

own inner fulfillment. You’ll be able to create a safe

haven at home and will be able to take more

interest in the value of family life and the ones you

cherish. If you’ve been way too social, it’s easy to

neglect the ones that have stood by you through

thick and thin.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)

Between the 5th and the 10th some excellent news

is likely surrounding your work or career

objectives. This may have been a letter,

application, or a job interview you have attended

and were previously unsuccessful in, only to find

that there may have been an error or that the

successful candidate hasn't worked out. Even if

this isn't the case, it's not a bad idea to follow up

on previous applications and interviews to see why

if you were unsuccessful lost the position.

HOROSCOPESOCTOB E R 2 0 1 1

BY Dadhichi Toth

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)

Your thinking becomes progressive this month,

and this is also about meeting new and smart

people. Mercury is also a planet that relates to

humour, so you can expect a few good laughs with

the people that you’re hanging out with.

Communication, working on clever dialogue with

friends, and also studying life in general will offer

you an opportunity to also plan or accomplish

something new.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)

You will be “burning the candle at both ends,” and

this is shown by the difficult aspect between Mars

and Jupiter. Between the 3rd and the 9th,

especially, you need to take stock of yourself and

not promise what you can’t deliver. As a flow on

from this aspect, Venus does provide you with a

chance to appreciate the beautiful things in life as

well as be appreciated for your own personal and

inner beauty. You could find yourself in the

limelight this month, particularly in your workplace.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)

You must again tend with some serious

responsibilities from the 1st until the 5th.  You will

realize that you can't use your charm to get you

through some of the meetings and confrontational

episodes that occur.  Saturn, Mars, and Venus don't

in any way give you relief, and you could be

working hard with very little recognition.   For

homemakers, this point could be driven home by

the fact that you feel unsupported and are doing

most of the chores!

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)

Particularly between the 10th and the 12th, there

may be an opportunity to complete some work

with a social reward at the end. A party, a business

luncheon or some new and long-awaited change

in your work environment makes business much

more pleasurable, or indeed business and

pleasure mix well together. Your social ability will

also impress others.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20)

You’re very idealistic about love and between the

8th and the 13th may be working much harder to

make your dreams a reality. As you are aware,

sometimes these dreams are not met with the

same level of enthusiasm or commitment by those

with whom we interact. Even if this is the case, you

should still remain positive and put your best foot

forward by expressing what you believe is your

best in love and friendship.   You might overdo

things between the 15th and the 18th and this is

because of the full Moon.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)

Sex is uppermost in your mind after the 18th when

the Sun enters your eighth zone of deep

transformation, sexuality, and intimacy. This is a

time when you’ll want to express these deeper,

primal urges and demand that your partner does

the same. If you happen to be out of sync with your

spouse or lover, however, this may cause problems

and could highlight the significant differences in

your development.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)

Excellent Solar transits after the 24th  lighten up

your marital and relationship sector. For those of

you who have only recently been married, the

promise of childbirth and growing your family is on

the cards. Venus, however, between the 26th and

the 31st  may cause you some distress. On this

same topic of parenting and extending your family,

you may need to make some compromises. Right

timing is everything.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)Religious views, the way you perceive yourself in

relation to others, and your overall life perception

will change dramatically this month.  Jupiter, along

with Pluto, will radically shift your attitudes and

make you aware of bigger and better things.  It’s

as if you have x-ray vision and can see beneath the

surface of things and people.  This could be rather

surprising if not shocking when you start to sense

elements of other’s character that may not have

been evident before.

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

After the 3rd and up until the 8th the hard aspect

of Mars and Jupiter hint at the fact that due to

these rather busy times, spending a lot of money

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22) - Your inspiration is a great tonic for friends andfamily throughout October. With Neptune in your zone of creativity, you can helpothers along the path of their own creative needs. But you do need to exercisecare, especially after the 16th. Outlandish, hare-brained schemes that have nopractical utility could cause you to lose some respect amongst your peers. It’s agood idea to draw a clear line in the sand between your professional obligationsand your creative or inventive quirkiness.

JENNIFER L. NEELY

After graduating from Oklahoma State

University in 2005 with a BS in Hotel & Restaurant

Administration, Jennifer began working as a

wedding planner and started her own company, A

Black Tie Affair.  After a few months of working

strictly in the wedding planning arena, Jennifer

decided she wanted to do more with her degree,

so she accepted a job as a manager at Baker

Street Pub and Grill where she stayed for

two-and-a-half years.   She enjoyed the spirited

environment and the numerous people with whom

she interacted, but the hours of the bar industry

weren’t necessarily for her.   So Jennifer began

exploring other avenues of interest still in her area

of expertise. This is when she discovered Glazer’s

of Oklahoma, a brokerage for Fine Wine &

Spirits.  She became a Sales Representative for

Diageo and Moët-Hennessy, and she currently

represents one of the best and largest portfolios

with products such as Crown Royal, Captain

Morgan, Jose Cuervo and Smirnoff.   In 2011,

Jennifer received an award for Sales Person of the

Year, and she has recently become the State Sales

Product Marketing Manager. Jennifer said, “I

absolutely love what I do. I am one of the lucky

people. I enjoy what I do so much that it doesn’t

even feel like work.”

BRITTON STEWART

Britton Stewart is a graduate of UCO where he

received  an undergraduate degree in History

and  continued to earn a Masters in Education.

Britton worked at Cafe 501 for six years where he

started as a server. Britton became intrigued by

food and wine, so he took the initiative to learn

more in this realm, which eventuated in him

becoming a manager. Britton utilized his college

studies to develop the training program for 501 that

ensures staff has all the necessary tools and

resources to become the best at providing

personalized and professional service. One of the

things that Britton loves about working at 501 is the

opportunity to form relationships with the

numerous regulars who visit. Some regular

customers come to 501 daily, and others come

weekly. Britton is amazed that many people still

don’t know that Cafe 501 is a full service restaurant

in the evening with an impressive menu and a

tremendous variety of choices. Cafe 501 is

definitely not just a favorite lunchtime spot;

dinner is a must try. Britton is most proud of the

great staff and team that has been developed and

works extremely well together. Ask him what his

favorite entrees are. He says it’s definitely the

Coyote Chicken Sandwich for lunch and the Crispy

Chicken for dinner.
