Hay DaysThe 49th rendition of the Sno-Barron’s Hay Days grass drag and swap meet, the much anticipated unofficial start of winter, is now in the rear view mirror. Hays Days 2015 was as good as any in a long, long time, with perfect temperatures, an upbeat mood throughout the venue, and what seemed like an endless parade of team and industry happenings that filled the better part of the weekend.

Hay Days has something for everyone, from the AMSOIL tricycle challenge to TerraCross to freestyle snow and moto, not to mention the swap meet. On the racing front, each of the manufacturer’s unveiled their new race specific machines and rider lineups with great fanfare and promises of winning seasons.

In case you didn’t make it there yourself, here’s a little photo recap...

Hay Days is all about people and the snowmobile industry is unique in that for as many small factions that make up it’s many parts, the people tend to stick around for a long time. Hay Days is always a great place to reconnect with old friends, meet those you may only know by voice or email and do a double-take on those who are sporting a whole new look.

Scott Judnick, shown with wife Colleen, has been on a diet that has him looking like a new man.

The Bailey Motorsports team made the trek from out east. Their Pro rider Stale Eggen (r) is already here for the season.

Hay Days

Todd Wolff won back-to-back I-500s in 1998 and 1999. Bob Coffin and Steve Brand (l) were always part of his success.

Olav Aaen is a pioneer in CVT drive technology, so this wan’t his first encounter with a dual-roller clutch.

C & A Pro’s Eddy Plowman enjoying some BBQ at the Leighton team shindig on Friday night.

Matt Pranger and Paul Woodie representing for Woodies Racing, who has brought Mike George into the fold for 2016.

ISOCThe AMSOIL Championship Snocross tour continuesto be the benchmark for all forms of snowmobile racing, hosting 17 rounds of professional competition over eight weekends, including 16 dates with a full slate of semi-pro and amateur racing.

The series will be going back to all of the same venues this season with only a slight change of dates with rounds 7 & 8 in Deadwood, South Dakota taking place one week earlier in January and the event at Route 66 Speedway in Joliet, moving back two weeks and taking place the after rounds 11 & 12 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

New additions this year include the Woodies Racing Jr. Girls 9-13 class. Previously, girls had to race in the Pro-Am Women’s class which meant competing with older, more experienced riders. The new class has already begun to generate new interest and should be a great building block for the future.

The current state of top-level teams and up and coming family teams is as good as it has ever been on the national snocross scene and there has been talk that the series itself is in negotiations with at least one prominent new sponsor.

ECSEast Coast Snocross, presented by AMSOIL, Woody’s Traction and FXR, is gearing up for another exciting season of competition in 2016. The series will make a return visit to Maine after a successful debut in Bangor last January. Last January’s Paul Bunyan International Sno-X was a big hit for all.

The tour will conclude its 2016 season at the Peek ‘N Peak Resort in Findley Lake, New York. Officials are also working on a New York race for earlier in the season at a familiar site where snocross was held several years ago.

Plans are also coming together for the 2016 Triple Crown Series. This three-race package creates an international rivalry between New England/New York riders and Canadian riders from SCM. Specific race sites for this series will be announced soon.

Snocross WALTON

Page 19: Snox365 #003

There is a team working on putting something together for Arctic Cat in the east this season. The respected brand from Thief River Falls, MN, likes to have a presence here in New England, and it looks like that will happen for them. Ski-doo will once again be represented by Ingles Performance and daSilva Racing, while Massachusetts-based Team Southside will again carry the Polaris colors with pride. Look for rider lineups to be announced in the coming weeks.

Look for more dates and race sites to be announced soon. Stay informed at www.eastcoastsnocross.com

CSRAThe Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA) has affiliated with (ISOC), (ECS), and (SCMX) for the 2016 race season. The affiliation will allow racers from Canada and the USA to participate at the other circuits International events for less cash by reducing or eliminated additional membership fees.

This winter The Rockstar Energy Snowcross series will feature (4) new race locations including events near North Bay Ontario, a new race location in Sault Ste Marie as part of the Bon-Soo Winter Festival, a new SCMX / CSRA co-sanctioned National Triple

Crown race near Trois-Rivieres Quebec, and a race under the lights at the Western Fair District in London, Ontario.

CSRA will also return to Rouyn Noranda Quebec for the annual International Snowcross Grand Prix Triple Crown event January 16-17.

CSRA will release the final schedule of events October 23-25 at the Toronto International Snowmobile ATV & Powersports Show at the Toronto International Centre.

USXC

The USXC hosted some of the closest racing of the season last year with top amateurs and professionals battling it out on production-based machines from each of the four manufacturers. Although poor snow conditions forced the cancellation of the much anticipated Winnipeg to Willmar I-500, the event is back on for this February.

The XC season opens on December 19 at the traditional Gerald Dyrdahl Memorial race in Pine Lake and resumes at a new event in Devils Lake, North Dakota on New Year’s weekend. Another new location caps off the season in Naytahwaush, Minnesota.

COR Powersports

With one of our biggest Cor PowerSports seasons ever in 2015 we have been working hard over the summer to make our 5th season of Cor PowerSports even better! For 2016 our focus has been on building upon the great foundation of a grassroots family friendly series, keeping the great venues we have visited over the past 4 seasons, bringing back great true xc terrain venues like Munising, Michigan and adding Live Timing and Scoring from all events so fans can follow the races online. Also we have taken the Midwest Extreme Snowmobile Challenge (MESC) event and will be expanding that into a 3 race Triple Crown series that will feature Terrain X, Hillclimb, & Hill X disciplines of racing.

The MESC Triple Crown consists of some traditional racing like Hillclimb & Hill X racing but adding the new discipline of Terrain X. Terrain X isn’t going to be a cross country or snocross style of racing but more of an old school motocross format. The course will be approx. 2 miles in length, racers will compete in a two moto format with their finishes going towards the overall, race length will be time plus two laps like motocross, and no big snocross style man made

Cross-country

jumps but more of a natural terrain motocross layout.

We feel this Terrain X discipline will cater to both the cross country style racers as well as snocross racers, length of the races will enable riders to run their smaller OEM snocross fuel tanks but the Pro class will be pushing the distance to the limit of fuel usage. The 2016 Cor PowerSports schedules are:

Tucker Hibbert The defending ISOC Pro Open champ returns to the series with Monster Energy, Arctic Cat and Ram Trucks back on board. The one change to the team lineup has Dan Ebert stepping in to replace Garth Kaufman, who will be sticking closer to home in Idaho to compete in select Hillclimb events.

Hibbert suffered a fractured ankle this summer while training for the outdoor motorcross season but has since taken part in an MX national as well as several mountain bike races and is at 100% heading into the pre-season.

Monster Energy, Arctic Cat, Ram Trucks, Arcticwear, Stud Boy, Fly Racing, Speedwerx, Fox Shox, Leatt, Spy Optics, Hot Stuff Pizza, C-Tec2, Tekvest, Kicker, Digital Ink, CTi

Scheuring Speed SportsThe AMSOIL, U.S. Air Force, Ford Trucks team is looking to carry on the momentum that Tim Tremblay established last season finishing second in the ISOC Pro Open class. Tremblay has had an outstanding summer racing Canadian provincial and national MX events and is ready for Duluth as he enters a contract season with the team and Ski-Doo.

Lincoln Lemieux, who was injured for most of last season after making a very impressive start, is back to full health. Lemieux is anxious to prove his early success was no fluke and that he belongs in the

conversation with riders who are ready to challenge the class veterans.

The Scheuring team has also added Max Taillefer as a full-time member of the squad where he will be competing in Pro Lite. Taillefer filled in for the team last season when Lemieux was injured, turning in results that landed him a full-time seat for 2016.

Team LaValleeTeam LaVallee has undergone significant changes over the off-season but the one constant going into 2016 is Kyle Pallin. KP had a breakout season in 2014 and stepped it up another notch in 2015 when he came out of the gate with a podium in Duluth and then scored his first Pro Open win at Canterbury Park. Pallin has shown he has the speed to win and be a podium regular so will this be the season he puts it together for five straight months and challenges for a title?

In following with the Polaris edict of only two riders in the factory trailers, Team LaVallee cut loose veteran Andy Lieders and Jake Scott in favor of Pro Lite contender Zak Mason. Mason was leading the

points chase in the Lites division last season when he went down with a season-ending shoulder injury in January.

Judnick MotorsportsThe Judnick team remains unchanged in the Pro Open class as Ross Martin returns for his 13th season. It is noteworthy, however, that a shakeup to the squad’s Pro Lite program could pay direct dividends for Martin.

Jake Angove was signed over the summer on the promise he showed early last year with an opening day podium in Duluth and a fourth at round 4 in Fargo. Angove would miss the remainder of the season with an internal injury, but is back training at full force this summer. Which brings it back to Martin. The two southeast Wisconsin neighbors have formed a tight bond over the summer, competing in numerous moto and mountain bike races together, re-energizing Martin as he attempts to extend his streak of seasons with Pro Open wins.

Polaris, Axalta, Jack Link’s, AMSOIL, Rockstar Energy Drink, Klim, SSi, Fly Racing, MICI, Walker Evans, Stud Boy, RCS, Kutzler Express, C & A Pro, Jeff Foster, Camso, Champion, Mitsubishi, Factory Pipe, Holeshot, Link Ford, C Tech, Hayes, V Force, MoFlow, Tekrider

Christian Brothers Racing CBR continues to hone its marketing savvy, welcoming new sponsors Arctic Wear, CTech2, Country Cat and100%. The team was busy all summer promoting Logan Christian’s primary sponsor DOC 360 and has recently hired Lissa Marsolek as their full-time PR person.

The snocross team returns intact with Logie looking to build on his career-best 4th overall and Dave Joanis ready to do the same in Pro Open. Tyler Adams returns to the squad in Pro Lite.

Zach Herfindahl will lead the charge in USXC cross-country where he is the defending Pro Open and Pro Stock Champion. Herfindahl will also compete in the Soo I-500 as well as additional MIRA ice oval

endurance races. There has been some speculation that Herf 312 may even make a run at an early or late season snocross in the Pro Lite class. Ryan Trout returns to the team’s XC squad along with newcomer Hunter Houle. Logan Christian is expected to make occassional starts in XC when schedules allow.

Although Hillcross will not be returning to Winter X, 2015 Gold Medalist Ryan Simons will be back in action at the Soo I-500 and select oval enduro races.

The CBR 120 giveaway will be returning again this season. This contest took place at 5 of the 8 ISOC national events last year, in which only lucky

Hentges RacingThe Hentges team kept the entire sport on pins and needles through most of the summer as to who would fill their second seat in Pro Open. With Swedish star Petter Narsa now tagged for that role, the team retains a powerful one-two punch lead by 2015 Deadwood Shootout race winner Kody Kamm.

Kamm has demonstated, on multiple occassions, that he can match the speed of Tucker Hibbert on any given day and just needs to be able to maintain it for 20 laps week in and week out to be a title contender.

For Narsa, this willl be his best shot at scoring a Pro Open win, riding equipment that is capable of a holeshot every time and proven to be podium worthy.

Justin BrobergJust prior to this issue going online we learned that Justin Broberg had signed with Minnesota’s McGuire Racing. JB will be contending the entire AMSOIL Championship Snocross series on an Arctic Cat, teaming with Brett Turcotte who will race a limited schedule similar to his 2015 run as a member of McGuire squad.

Leighton MotorsportsThe team that was once structured to be a Pro Lite superpower will take on a new personna in 2016 as the lineup has been pared down to just two riders, Corin Todd and Trevor Leighton, both of whom will be competing in the Pro Open class.

Todd made an impressive, abeit inconsistent, debut last season but has all the traits of a racer who learns from the highs and lows to be a better rider in season two. For Leighton, the move to Open brings the chance to prove he belongs among racing’s elite. For the past few years, some have claimed that his bigger stature and aggressive riding style were better suited to the higher horsepower open machines. Leighton has not taken the challenge ligthly, relocating to Minnesota at mid-summer, dropping a bunch of weight and sharpening his focus on Duluth.

The team returns with increased support from Fly Racing, WPS and a new aliance with Skinz Protective

Boss RacingBoss Racing has undergone significant changes over the summer, spliting from their partnership with Canada’s Huber Motorsports. Their top rider, Adam Renheim returns to anchor the only spot in the Pro Open class, while sister Marica will be back to defend her Pro-Am Women’s title. With all of the focus now being placed on Adam and the numerous improvements that have been made to the Ski-Doo sled in the off-season, he becomes a strong choice to to make his first podium appearance.

Jimmy John’s is back on board as the team’s title sponsor, while Fly Racing has stepped in as the new apparrel suplier to the team.

Warnert RacingWarnert Racing has a reputation for developing young European riders and last season they hit the jackpot with Norwegian Elias Ishoel. Ishoel

is the hands-down favorite to win the Pro Lite championship in 2016, if he can keep his sled under him and his aggresive riding style.

John Stenberg will be back as the team’s Pro Open rider. Stenberg had a very solid rookie season, despite getting physically roughed up at a couple of rounds. The future of Warnert’s previous Pro Open rider Johan Lidman remains in question. Lidman has missed nearly two full season with a reoccuring knee injury as is slated to return to the U.S. after the first of the year, in time for rounds 5 & 6 at Canterbury Park.

Carlson Motorsports2015 Pro Lite Champion Ryan Springer and teammate Andrew Carlson have both graduated to the Pro Open ranks for 2016 where they look to establish themselves as instant front row starters.

The Carlson program will be interesting to follow throughout the season as they implement their own motor program spearheaded by Crew Chief Jayme Cheney in conjuction with Bikeman Performance. This is a departure from the Polaris blueprint in which red teams in the Open division have purchased their powerplants through Bender Racing.

It’s been a busy off season for the team riders as Carlson earned Rookie of the Year honors in the TORC Pro Light truck division and Springer raced a number of GNCC off-road nationals in his Polaris RZR.

Stud Boy RacingThe Stud Boy team will be rolling in style this winter with a new 18-wheel transporter destined for all of the ISOC national snocross rounds. Brothers Zach and Nick Pattyn will be back on Arctic Cat snowmobiles for 2016, along with a new look with Arcticwear clothing.

Hard to believe, but Zach is now one of the senior members of the Pro Open division and is looking forward to a second year on familiar equipment after scoring a pair of top 10 finishes last year. Nick just misses a top 10 overall last season in Pro Lite and could be a top 5 contender this season.

Cottew MotorsportsThe 2015 ISOC Team of the Year is coming into the new season more heavily-loaded than ever. Reigning Sport class Champion Cole Cottew has moved up to the Pro Light Class, where he will join teammate Travis Muller and new arrival James Johnstad, both of whom have won multiple main events and should be strong contenders in the division.

Mitchell Thelen, who joined the team at mid-season

last year, has been signed as a full-time rider this year where he will contest the Sport Class.

KC MotorsportsKC Motorsports is looking forward to their Sophomore season with Pro-Lite racer #201, Travis Kern, Sport racer #217, Jay Lura, and Jr. Novice racer #333, Evan Christian. 2015 has brought great things for our team, said Karl Christian. “We’ve brought Jay on board for the entire upcoming season, after joining us for the second half of last season. He has been racing bikes this summer, continues to work hard and has a great attitude. Some big wins are within his grasp. Travis shot out of the gate strong at Duluth, but battled sickness and injury throughout last season. He is hungry for podiums this year and has amped up his game with his fitness this summer. We are looking forward to great things from him. Evan has continued his year-round race schedule, piloting dirtbikes this summer and is looking forward to this winter season.”

Ingles PerformanceIngles Performance returns to East Coast Snocross (ECS) competition in 2016 after notching its second straight Pro Open championship last winter. Returning to the high-profile Ski-doo squad is defending and five-time series champion Danny Poirier, fellow Quebec native Mathieu Morin, Joe Bishop, Leo Patenaude and Hunter Patenaude.

“We’re excited to have such a strong group of athletes back for another season,” team co-owner and general manager Robin Ingles said. “Danny was so dominant last winter, winning 13 of 17 finals. It was sad to see Mathieu’s season end early, but

Page 30: Snox365 #003

he is in great shape now and ready to win races. Joe progressed nicely last winter, and should be a contender in Pro Lite. We’re hoping for another strong season in 2016.”

Poirier enjoyed one of the best seasons of a stellar career in 2015, never straying far from the podium. A solid run in Findley Lake, NY, last March locked up his fifth Pro title (2004, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015), giving Ingles and Ski-doo reason to smile. Morin won a final in Bangor last January before his injury in Schaghticoke, New York, sent him to the sidelines.

Leo Patenaude ran strong in the Sport class on the ISOC national series last winter against stiff competition, hitting the podium often against factory-backed riders. Leo also competed in eight ECS Pro Lite events, with three wins and two second-place finishes before a knee injury ended his season. He’s currently living in Kenosha, WI, rehabbing his knee and working out. Hunter is fully recovered from his injury last November in preseason practice, and is training hard for the upcoming season. Ingles Performance riders are also revved up about the news of an ECS-sanctioned race at Fulton Speedway in Fulton, New York, just eight miles from the dealership. After years of traveling long miles to most races, it will be satisfying and a little easier to have a points race in our own back yard.

Race fans have a unique chance to meet the team and get an autograph at the annual Ingles Performance Open House on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 9-11. This annual event offers some great deals and officially kicks off a new season.

Bailey MotorsportsBailey Motorsports is super excited to announce that share our Ski Doo has appointed Bailey Motorsports

as one of their Super Teams for the 2015/2016 Season.

The team will host 2 Pro riders this winter. Back for his second season with the team is Ståle Eggen #799, after finishing 3rd last season in the CSRA, Ståle will be in the hunt for the #1 plate. New to the team this year is Mitch King #18, riding Pro in his second season. Ryan Hunt #729 will be racing his rookie season in Pro Lite, Christian Sarracini #959 racing in Sport, Adam Goodale #475 and Stu Hunt #29 in the Pro Vet and Pro Master Classes and Justin Matthews #131 racing Novice. The collaboration between St. Onge Recreation and Bailey Motorsports will bring Isaac St. Onge #117 to the team, racing in the Junior Classes.

The team will focus their efforts on the CSRA Snowcross circuit, contesting championships in the series and enter select ISOC events when the schedule permits.

Bunke RacingBunke Racing Owner and Championship driver Gabe Bunke will lead the team in 2015-16 competing in the Premier Cross Country circuit, USXC. Bunke Racing’s Semi Pro Super Star Taylor Bunke will also be leading the charge for Bunke Racing and Polaris Industries in USXC’s Semi Pro Classes.

Gabe Bunke:We are excited to get back on our 600 Axys’s again this year, after one full season on the Axys we learned a ton and I am expecting an excellent season this year! My Goal as the Pro driver for this season is to compete in all of USXC Cross Country events, and along with winning races I am going to work for another championship. We will also make a run at the Soo I-500 once again in 2016 to go for our 6th win at the Soo with Gabe Bunke and Aaron Christensen on the 74 Sled along with Faust Racing fielding # 537 again this year.

Taylor Bunke:This will be my 4th year racing a full schedule and 3rd season as a Semi Pro in Cross Country. I graduated from Sport Class to Semi Pro in 2014 and have been consistently improving every year posting 2 victories in my 2015 season and securing a podium spot for season championship. My goal for 2016 is to win on my Polaris 600 Axys and earn the # 1 spot this year for USXC’s Semi Pro Season Championship.

Gabe:We are putting our focus on the USXC schedule and the SOO I-500 for this 2015-16 season. Our schedule is too busy to do both circuits. We have decided to pull out of the Triple crown series. I hate to leave the door open on the Enduro scene because I know we are very competitive in the No Bull Triple Crown races. But I’m just worried we will cut ourselves short trying to be at the top of our game in both USXC and No Bull events. We will likely go to a couple of the races if time allows and support our partners at the Soo, Faust Racing in their efforts to win triple crown honors and possibly get Taylor Bunke some valuable Enduro Racing experience racing in the Sportsman Enduro for entry level riders.

Team Bauerly RacingTeam Bauerly will again pilot Ski-doo brand snowmobiles for the upcoming race season. This year marks the team’s 14th season on the track.

Kurt Bauerly #318 will be back to defend his National Championship Title from last season in the Pro Plus 30 class on the ACS Tour. He has left his mark in recent years with a long list of podium finishes and class wins; his recent championship is a testament

to that. “Now the lone representative of the racing Bauerly’s after Ross’s retirement from competition, I definitely plan to be a title contender in 2016, but I am also excited to work with these new riders to carry on the success that we have had as a family and as a team.” (Kurt Bauerly)

Shane Sewell #219 who hails from Westville, Indiana will be back to compete in the ultra competitive Pro-Lite class with Team Bauerly. With a full season under his belt on the snow, and the strong resume he has racked up on 2 wheels, look for big things to come from this strong determined rider. Shane states: “I’d like to first thank Team Bauerly and Ski-doo for giving me the chance to race Snocross; it’s a huge confidence booster having great people behind me going into the season. I’m going to show up at Duluth ready for war!”

With the recent retirements of a few longtime team riders, it was time once again to look outside the

box in order to find another exciting addition to the group. With the help of Jason from Straightline Performance and Olle from Oktan AB Sweden, Marcus Ogemar from Östersund, Sweden will join the team in the Pro-Lites Class for the first part of the season in the U.S. The accomplished young rider has won the Swedish National Championship, a Clash of Nations Gold, and is the current FIM World Snocross Champion for 2015 so racing ISOC ACS was the logical next step in his career.

“We’re excited for the diverse levels of experience of the team we have assembled; this group has us positioned to do great things. Our hardworking crew and the many great sponsors that help make this all work are the key foundation to our success. Everyone on the team is focused on the mission of getting on the podium; the new sled from Ski-doo and the program we put together will help us accomplish just that.” – Chad and Paul Bauerly.

Rock River/American MetalcraftWisconsin racers Eddie Neubauer and Brett Nastala have teamed up once again, this time on new colors, and are hoping to make a healthy run at the ISOC Pro Lite championship. The team was set to do battle last season before both riders were sidelined with injuries early in the season.

In addition to the new brand, the guys are beefing up their marketing program to develop new sponsors and create a higher profile for the team.

Lugert RacingColton, age 19, will be going into his 3rd year on a 600 and Dawson, age 16, will be going into his 2nd year on a 600. The racing started as just a fun family night at ERX Motorpark in Elk River, MN. Being only 15 minutes from home we went every race night. They both started on a 1979 Yamaha Enticer with a whopping 340 cc’s, They ran the Vintage Leaf Spring Fan class. Colton won the championship in 2012-2013 season and his brother Dawson won the championship the very next year in the 2013-2014 season. After Colton won the championship on the old iron, he went to his Dad and professed his desire to ride a “Real Snocross Sled”. So the search was on. We landed at the doorstep of Team Bauerly Racing and with a little help from his Mom/Dad and loan from his Nana/Papa, Colton purchased his first 600 snowmobile.

That’s right, Colton worked and paid for the sled himself. The boy was determined.

Colton ran the ISOC Regional Series in the Amateur 16+ Class, and came home at the end of the year with 1st place overall and was invited to Lake Geneva Grand Finale where he came home with a 3rd in the final against the best in the nation. Last year was the start of Dawson on a 600. He did very well against some good competition. In the ERX Novice 600 he ended up overall in 7th place out of 52 racers. In the ISOC Regional Amateur class he ended up 10th overall, out of 29 racers. Dawson spent this summer racing his Honda 450 Sport Quad to keep in shape. He finished 3rd overall for the season in the 450B class and 2nd overall for ERX Sport Quads. He is very excited for the upcoming season. Colton also did well on the snow last year. The increased tough competition had him always looking for more. He found the “more” at Lake Geneva Grand Finale where he moved up to the Sport class and qualified #10 for the Sport Final on Saturday night. While running in 7th and only

a couple laps to go he crashed. He admitted to “making a mistake”, he put the blame on himself. He ended up with a broken leg. A bummer way to end the highlight of his year. But with good spirits he wanted to stay and watch the racing on Sunday while on crutches. He has some new hardware now

Page 34: Snox365 #003

and is all healed up and has been training. He will be ready to tackle Duluth in November! Cowboy Jacks, Fly Racing, Ski-Doo, Studboy, Digital Ink, Leatt, 100%, Rox Speed FX, Brite-Stitch

Ryan WeidemannI am a 34 year old Civil Engineer from Stratford, Iowa, and a lifelong snowmobiler. This will be my 5th season racing XC, competing in the Expert 85 class of the USXC series. Many weekends of the winter, I load my trusty Arctic Cat in the back of my Chevy, and drive 500 miles from Iowa to compete in XC racing. My great crew of Merle Weidemann, Andy Hennigar, and Garett Burkhart all take time to make these trips and endure the brutal weather conditions. Racing XC would not be possible without the help of my great sponsors which include

Arctic Cat, Snow Trails North, Woody’s Traction, Mason City Powersports, Chase Graphics and Rox Speed FX.

Country CornersThe CCR Team has been working hard over the summer to make plans for the 2016 race season and we will field one of the largest snowcross teams with 18 riders including some of Canada’s top Snowmobile racers.

The team will include 2 Pro Open riders - returning to CCR is the reigning Rookie of the Year #603 Ben Holmes. New to the CCR Team is Pro Open rookie rider #637 Mitch McNair who is coming off of a 2nd overall in the ProLite class in 2015. Also new for CCR is #459 Jake Weir who is making the jump to the ProLite class. Joining him in ProLite will be #779 Tyler Billings, #601 Zach Holmes and fellow ProLite rookie #399 Taylar Lightfoot. Our Sport rider will be #442 Todd Lightfoot, along with #602 Bob Holmes and #179 Cam Darling competing in the Masters classes. Our Junior riders will include #612 Roy Norris, #270 Jaylon Roes and #600 Jaydon Holmes. CCR will also include a strong group of Novice riders including #712 Phillip Norris, #340 Adrian Roes, #417 Skylar Jenkerson, #562J Cole Janson and #225 Wynston Roes will return in the 120 classes.

London RecFor the 2015/2016 CSRA season London Recreational Racing will feature a determined #282 Devin Wilson in the Pro Open class and #211 Blake Taylor in Pro Lite looking to upgrade his 3rd place National finish last season. #321 Kyle Ward will take on the Sport 600 class and John Patterson #710 will race the Sport Vet class once again.

Windy City RacingChicago, Illinois-Windy City Racing is a snocross team based out of Chicago, Illinois fielding one rider, 17 year old Owen Falk. Windy City Racing is planning the biggest season ever! For the first time in the team’s 4 year history, Windy City Racing is going to try to complete the full National circuit! Owen Falk will be competing in Sport Lite and Sport aboard a Polaris IQ 600 sporting possibly the most unique graphics on the tour. In addition to the National tour, Windy City Racing will compete at GLX Snocross during any off weekends that lineup with the GLX race schedule. Who’s Next? Woodies Racing

We’ve said over and over how family race teams are the backbone of snowmobile racing. In recent years on the AMSOIL Championship Snocross tour we have seen teams such as Carlson Racing and Leighton Motorsports develop from one or two rider family squads to full-fledged factory satellite teams, joining the likes of Christian Brothers Racing, fielding riders in the Pro Open class.

The question that always looms is where will the next generation come from and will they be able to sustain the program levels that have been established by these devoted parents. In 2015, Cottew Motorsports answered the bell with Amateur racer Mitchell Thelen and veteran Pro Lite rider Travis Muller joining Sport Champion Cole Cottew on a unit that secured wins in all three classes. The Cottew team has stepped it up again for this season with a brand-new transporter and the addition of another veteran in James Johnstad.

One of the newcomers on the block is Woodies Racing, a Wyoming-based team who is branching out in a big way as they work to become one of Arctic Cat’s next flagship teams. Paul and Kim Woodie were introduced to snocross in 2009 when their towing company was working in conjuction with Freemont country in Idaho. The topic of snowmobile racing came up and the next thing you know they have a couple of 120s for daughter Taven and son Kaden and they were hooked.

The following year the kids were introduced to Junior classes and Kaden proceeded to race everything from the 9-13 class right thru the18 and over men. For the next couple of season’s the family sponsored several events in an effort to keep snocross alive out west. Ultimately they knew that to continue progressing they would have to start competing on the national tour, signing on full time last season. Both kids had great success in their respective classes with Kaden scoring 15 regional and national podiums, even after tearing his ACL at Shakopee.

Fast-forward to last summer when the Woodies jumped all in, purchasing a team headquarters in Milaca, Minnesota to be closer to the action and establishing new outposts for their big-rig towing operation in Milaca and Thief River Falls.

The dedication to the sport has gone much deeper than their own families success, as the team began working with Wes Selby on a hillcross program last spring and has brought in east coast veteran Mike George as their Pro Lite entry on the national tour. Additionally, the Woodies have gotten behind a new class for 2015-16 with their support of the new Junior Girls 9-13 class that will help foster the growth in women’s racing by allowing younger girls to

Page 37: Snox365 #003

compete among themselves without having to jump staight into the Pro-Am class.

On the technical side, the team has enlisted the help of experienced mechanics Tim Harnois and Chad Moorehouse, as well as Matt Pranger, who will oversee media and PR.

THE THROWBACKCBR’s Zach Herfindahl Just Wants To Win. Anywhere, Anytime

Page 41: Snox365 #003

THE THROWBACK

At only 19 years of age, Zach Herfindahl has accomplished more in his young snowmobile racing career than many highly-acclaimed riders have in a lifetime. Three Pro championships with the USXC cross-country series, including back-to-back Pro Open titles, top a list that includes a weather-shortened chance at winning the Soo I-500 in his first year of eligibility.

What’s more encouraging is that Herf is by no means content being a cross-country specialist and is greatly looking forward to the 2015-16 season when he will defend his XC titles, return to the Soo, make a run at a Jackson Hole Hillclimb crown and, quite possibly, find his way to the starting line at a national snocross.

• EXTRA LONG 90” TIEDOWN

While good genes often play a role in the making of a champion, Herf is perhaps more a product of his environment. It should not be overlooked that that his father, Greg, played hockey at the collegiate level, but there might just be a bit more to the fact that his uncle Tom Herfindahl was Brad Pake’s mechanic during his golden years.

When you ask Zach to name his racing heroes, Pake’s do-it-all career puts him second only to Kirk Hibbert whose ability to win at any form of racing and willingness to talk shop with his competitors, have far more impact than any of Tucker Hibbert’s X Games medals or snocross championships.

Originally from westcentral Minnesota, the Herfindahl family has resided in the oval racing mecca of Eagle River, Wisconsin for most of Zach’s life. The Pro Champ final that takes place each January on a late Sunday aftenoon at the nearby Derby track has always held a strong appeal for him, but dirt bikes were his initial vehicle of choice and by the time the interest in snowmobile racing took hold, cross-country was the only thing on his radar.

The natural ability to keep it pinned while navigating unfamiliar terrain is a trait that continues to serve Herfindahl just as well on two wheels as it does snow. Last summer when we proposed doing a cross-over story that involved racing a national enduro in Michigan, he didn’t hesitate to commit.

At first the idea was to have Zach race a Husqvarna project bike we were building to spotlight the legendary brand’s return to it’s roots in off-road. When plans fell through with the dealership who was going to provide the unit, a last minute call to our friends at the Airgroup Husky satellite team resulted in a factory

ride for the weekend.

After arriving at the start location on Saturday, Herfindahl spent a whopping 15-20 minutes on team member Nick Fahringer’s practice bike and was ready to rip. Although Zach is an A class off-road racer, he was bumped into the pro class with the 20 best riders in the world, so he could start on a time slot designated for the pros and get service from the Airgroup support staff throughout the three and a half hour race.

At the end of the day he managed to get the full experience, leaving plastic on the trail, sampling the floor of the Michigan pines and finishing a respectible 15th in the class. The effort was not lost on Airgroup team owner Jack Morrison, who was impressed by the entire Herfindahl family’s involvement, and has become a new fan of XC snowmobile racing. Herf also managed to grab some great exposure for the sport when he was profiled the next week in Cycle News.

WELCOME TO TERRACROSS

In recent years, TerraCross has become one of the marque attractions at Hay Days. The series actually dates back to 4wd quads when promoter Joe Duncan put a plan together with ATV gurus Doug Gust and Daryl Rath. While the concept was intriging from the start, it was only after a partnership with Polaris and their RZR XP 1000 that the series really began to flourish.

Duncan’s blueprint for the series goes like this...”It only gets more expensive when driver A has to beat driver B, who has to beat driver C and the expense comes in semi-trucks and trailers or building the machines and we’ve created something that is unique in that everyone is in the same vehicle, prepped by the same people, on the same tires, suspension, motor. It’s all a stock Polaris XP 1000. So it’s very, very close racing.

We even transport the vehicles, all the drivers have to do is take care of their travel and broken parts.”

Today, the tour hosts three national events in San Diego, California, North Branch, Minnesota and Charlotte, North Carolina and is a veritable smorgasbord of action sports athletes from many disciplines. Of course, Duncan’s roots in snowmobile racing insure that there are plenty of winter warriors in the mix.

Minnesota’s Christian Craig came out of retirement to fill in on the Geico AMSOIL Honda team and is having one of his best year’s ever.

Craig dabbled with snocross last winter but those plans may be on permanent hiatus.

As the clock wound down on summer, Kody Kamm took one final break at his annual backyard bash to give Big Bird a mud bath. From here out it’s mostly business as the Hentges Racing Polaris rider turns his focus toward Duluth.

C & A Pro XCS Ski

The XCS’s optimal width of 6.75” provides ample off trail floatation, and firm footing on the trail. The outboard keels help alleviate trail darting and deliver extra floatation in deep snow. The traction scoops on both sides of the center keel keeps the XCS planted on the snow and gripping the corners where other skis would lift.

C&A left nothing out for the rider whose machine is used in low elevation and occasional trips to the mountains. Our integrated boot traction ridges are on both sides of the saddle for when the going gets deep and the rider needs a sturdy place to stand. Additionally, riders can reverse with ease and back out of situations with XCS’s tall tail section.

The brand new XCS by C&A Pro Skis, truly allows all riders to Ride Like a Pro!
