I. African American History & Culture

1. Suomala, Jussi. Howard Smith. Helsinki: Like, 2008. First Edition. 231 pp. text in a two-column Finnish-English bilingual translation concerning the African American artist based in Helsinki, lavishly illustrated throughout. Includes an index, timeline, and annotated bibliography. 4to. As new. Illus. boards, gilt cloth spine. [1142] $300 An important work on a major Black artist who has spent the last forty years of his life and career working in Finland. The book includes beautiful reproductions of Smith's work across a variety of media including painting, drawing, paper cuts, textiles, ceramics, metalwork and sculpture. Candid images from the artist's personal life are also included. Per an online biography, Smith (New Jersey, 1928) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and become a fellow there in 1962 after having earned a commission in the U.S. Army. He made his first trip to Finland that same year as a member of the Academy of Fine Arts' "Young America Presents" touring exhibition and decided to remain there. Supporting himself as an interior designer, Smith mounted his first solo exhibition at Gallerie Pinx (Helsinki) in 1963. He has since exhibited internationally, including in the U.S., but remains largely overlooked in recent accounts of major African American artists and designers of the 20th century. The present title (now more than ten years out of print and poor distributed outside of Finland) is the most comprehensive monograph on his life and work. As of January 2021 we are only able to locate holdings at six institutions in the U.S.

Modern, though both spines appear to be retained from older bindings. [1112] on hold Rare survival of an important Porfiriato newspaper, published during the era when General Porfirio Díaz ruled Mexico (1876-1911), limiting political liberties and curtailing the operation of a free press, yet embracing foreign trade and cultural connections with Europe and the U.S. According to our expert source, some of the gaps in the present collation may represent issues that were seized or censored by the government. Despite the repressive climate of its time, El Cronista published a variety of important early modernist Mexican authors, among them Gutiérrez Nájera, who managed to bridge the gap between romanticism and the contemporary movements of modernismo and Symbolism in North America and used various pseudonyms including Monsieur Pomponet, Frú-Frú, Puck, El Cura de Jalatlaco, El Perico de los Palotes, and Mr. Can-Can. El Cronista contains the entirety of Nájera's "Memorias de un Vago, Pomponet." Other writers of note appearing in the volumes include Arturo Cuyas, Teresa Arroniz y Bosch, Alexandre Herculano, Andrés Bello, Diego Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés (Placido). The newspaper also includes impressive coverage of Thomas Edison's invention of the electric lightbulb, and the Mexican portion of Ulysses S. Grant's world tour. Lavish illustrations include multipage lithographic spreads showing the architecture and landscape of the Mexican republic. Extremely rare in the marketplace and largely unrepresented in institutional libraries. Not to be confused with the earlier Catholic newspaper of the same title (1862). As of January 2021, we are only able to ascertain physical holdings of scattered issues at UT's Benson Latin American Collection and Washington State University.

Shanghai: Eigentümer, Herausgeber, Schriftleiter: A.J. Storfer, 1939. First Edition. [Alternate title: Gelbe Post : Ostasiatische Illustrierte Halbmonatsschrift] A bound set of the first six continuous "semimonthly" issues, 144 pp., illustrated throughout, with texts in German. 4to. Laid in is a TLS with newspaper article clipping attached, sent from Max Nacht, a German-Jewish refugee in Shanghai, to publisher Max. G. Lowenherz of Three Lions, Inc. Unter bezugnahme auf Ihr Inserat im 'Aufbau' teile ich Ihnen mit, das ich Hefte 1-6 des 1 Jahrhanges der "Gelbe Post" abzugeben habe. Ilse Abraham, N.Y. (Diese Dame hatte eine leihbibliothek in Shanghai.)" [Oct. 1971. With reference to your advertisement in the "Construction" section, I share with you that I have at hand issues 1-6 of the 1st year of the 'Gelbe Post.' Ilse Abraham (Note: This lady had a lending library in Shanghai.)"] [1134] Sold "The Yellow Post" was originally published by Viennese psychoanalyst Adolf Josef Storfer during his exile in Shanghai under the Nazi era. It began as a semi-monthly periodical existing for six issues between May and July of 1939. After the appearance of no. 6, publication temporarily ceased then resumed with a seventh issue in November of 1939, after which it morphed into a daily newspaper under the same title ("Jahrgang 2") continuing through 1940. Storfer's editorial introduction for readers of the first issue explains that the pigment reference in the serial title wasn't meant to have deeper meaning beyond its association with the black print on the yellow cover, chosen because he felt the colors offered a favorable combination for the eye. The magazine covered various aspects of intellectual and cultural life in China, Korea, and Japan, with an emphasis on items of interest for the growing community of Jewish refugee exiles seeking shelter from the storm of antisemitism that was overtaking Austria and Germany. Maps showing overland travel routes from Western Europe to East Asia sit adjacent to film reviews of Chinese cinema and articles concerning psychoanalysis in Palestine and Japan. Storfer had been a student of Freud and eventually went on to co-edit Freud's collected works with Anna Freud. He also edited psychoanalytical journals and was the

managing director of the Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag. The present set provides a fascinating document of life among members of a little known community of Jewish exiles in mainland China, worthy of much further study. While the run is available in microfilm and has appeared in a reprint edition issued by Verlag Turia + Kant in 1999, physical copies of the original series are vanishingly rare, with the only confirmed holdings we can ascertain in Yivo and the Leo Baeck Institute.

[1147] Sold An uncommonly well- preserved copy of the work by noted Yiddish poet, Morris Rosenfeld (née Moshe Jacob Alter, b. 1862, Stare Boksze in Russian Poland - d. 1923, New York City.) Rosenfeld's verse often concerned the poor living conditions among Eastern Europe Jews in New York's tailoring workshops. He himself had worked as a tailor and a diamond cutter before joining the editorial staffs of several leading Jewish newspapers in New York. He independently published books of poetry and songs, notably among them Nokhn Ball (After the Ball), Di Pawnshop (Faryomert Farklogt) and Nem tsurik dayn gold (Take Back Your Gold.) Rosenfeld served as a delegate to the Fourth Zionist Congress at London in 1900. 12. Yang, Naomi. Book of Spirits. N.p. [Boston]: Rosetta, 1994. First Edition. Unpaginated artists' book [24 pages, french fold] printed in letterpress on cream colored laid paper, reproducing texts and images that relate to Spirits. 4to. Hand numbered and signed at the colophon. Fine. Single hand-sewn signature in a card stock cover, wrapped in mottled brown laid paper printed with the title text. [1143] $150 Book of Spirits was printed at Firefly Press to accompany the exhibition of paintings by Naomi Yang at Galerie Mourlot, Boston, September 6-October 15, 1994. According to Yang's introduction, "this little book is an attempt to give some account of those Spirits about whom every person ought to know something. The Grimorium Verum mentions seventeen of the most important subordinate Spirits.

As in choosing a cricket eleven the first choices are easy and the lastvery difficult to make, so it has been here. And if the reader feels thatsome Spirit who has been omitted should have the place of one whois represented, why, very likely the reader is right." Co-publisher ofExact Change Press (with her partner Damon Krukowski), Yang is alsoa noted graphic designer, visual artist, filmmaker, and musician knownfor her work with Damon & Naomi and Galaxie 500. The Book of Spiritsis her only artist's book to date. It pairs a dozen elegant line drawingsof Spirits with short descriptive texts providing their true names andbrief descriptions of their distinguishing qualities. Examples includeSIRCHADE, which "has the power to show thee all kinds of animals, ofwhatever nature they may be" and HUMOTS, which "can transport allmanner of books for thy pleasure." Yang has explained that the text ofBook of Spirits is derived, in part, from her readings of 'Everyman’sBook of Saints' by C.P.S. Clarke (1914) and 'The Book of Ceremonial Magic' by A.E. Waite (1961), and that her original drawings are based on illustrations in Waite's book, which are taken from the Grimorium Verum (1517), a magical textbook. As of January 2021, we are able to locate only one institutional holding, at The New York Public Library.

Very good, interior contents near fine. Tan boards, gilt title and spine. Our copy is rubbed at the extremities and sports an almost comically appropriate drop of black ink on the front cover, which is not present on other examples we have examined, though in our opinion it adds to, rather than diminishes, the otherwise austere composition. 17. [Kathy Acker] Only Prose. Nos. 1 (July 77) ; 2 (Nov. 77) ; and 3 (Oct. 78) (head of series). New York City: Perreault/Weinstein, 1977-1978. First Edition. Three issues, 10 pp. each, chiefly text. 4to. Near fine, uncirculated copies. No. 1 folded and unevenly toned. Nos. 2 & 3 mint. Corner stapled. [1133] Sold An elusive set of the intimate 'mailing list' magazine published by influential art critic John Perreault and his partner Jeff Weinstein during the late 1970s, featuring contributions by both editors along with writings by Kathy Acker, Barbara Baracks, Ira Joel Haber, Alex Gildzen, Helen Duberstein, John Jacob, Winifred Golden, Hannah Wiener, Douglas Messerli, and Melvin Freilicher. The excerpt of Acker's Blood & Guts in High School may be the work's first appearance in print. A fourth issues seems to have been printed in September of 1979, though we cannot confirm this due to scant records. Best known for being an early proponent of avant-garde movements like Minimalism, Land Art, and Pattern and Decoration during the late 1960s and 1970s, Perreault served as a critic for ARTnews, Soho News, The Village Voice, and other publications. The present set is un-mailed, and comes to us from Perreault's estate via the trade. Issues of Only Prose are extremely scarce, especially in such fine condition.

Vol. 1, nos. 1-11, 13-26 (missing only 12) ; Vol. 2, nos. 1-26 (complete) ; Vol. 3, nos. 1-11, 13-25 (missing 12 and the final issue 26) (Complete run save the three issues noted here). Seventy-five issues comprising a nearly complete run of the important small poetry magazine published by the queer bohemian poet Ben Musser. Typed postcard, signed, and a four additional issues of Musser's other magazines, (Contemporary Verse and Bozart) included. 12mo. Very good, some issues with significant marginal tears (presumably from mailing envelopes roughly opened) ; the set smells mildly of tobacco. Loose as issued. [1060] $850 JAPM, which stands for "Just Another Poetry Magazine" published works by a wide range of notable writers from the era, including Louis Ginsberg (Allen's father), Stanton Conlentz, Ralph Cheyney, Charles Henri Ford, Ernest Hartsock, Susan Bingham Pendleton, and Parker Tyler. Its editor, Ben Musser, was romantically connected to Samuel Steward (cf. Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade by Justin Spring, New York: FSG, 2011.) In 1929, Musser discontinued his publishing efforts and devoted the rest of his life to religious work (he was a tertiary of the order of St. Francis, i.e., a lay monk). In an autobiographical essay for The Book of Catholic Authors (Detroit: Walter Romig Co., 1945), he wrote of “…a period in which Bohemianism rivaled Catholicism for the field and finally, I pray forever, fell before the Cross. That ‘arty’ interlude included the editorship of several poetry magazines….” ] Extremely scarce in the marketplace, and fewer than five institutions in the United States can claim significant runs.

19. [Airplanes] The War in the Air Sept. 3, 1939--July 22, 1941 [manuscript.] with : War Emergency Information and Instructions [pamphlet]. N.p. [London]: mss. 1939-1941. Unique. 120 pp. manuscript in a juvenile or adolescent hand, chronicling, almost daily, events of aerial combat between fighters of the Royal Airforce and German Luftwaffe during the course of World War II. 8vo. Very good overall. Rust at staples, covers a trifle worn, old bend to the upper right corner of front wrapper and first 30 pp. Hand drawn and lettered cover. [1061] $650 The manuscript relates very few (if any) incidents of day-to-day life, rather, it focuses almost exclusively on dogfights and bombing raids, neatly summarizing the air war news as transcribed from evening papers and radio broadcasts in London. The front cover features a charming though inexpertly drawn Supermarine Spitfire. All in all, the item stands as a particularly British example of optimism under duress and composure during chaotic circumstances. The sureness and clarity of the War Emergency Information and Instructions [pamphlet, 8 pp.] tucked inside provides a startling contrast to today's situation, reminding readers to "KEEP A GOOD XHEART, WE ARE GOING TO WIN TRHOUGH."
