Equipment is tuned and cleaned after every use to ensure maximum on snow performance and enjoyment. Park up, throw your boots on and jump straight on the lift!

Snowcentre NewmarketWho else hates rental queues with a passion? Get fitted when it suits you and then pick up your equipment the day before you leave. We do not charge for pick-up and drop-off days. If you are travelling to the South Island or overseas we offer one extra travel day.

Snowcentre PowderhornFast walk-in walk-out service means no time wasted on the mountain. Extended shop hours mean extra time to pick up your rental equipment. The mountain shuttle bus pickup service even leaves from right outside the Powderhorn.

STAY MOTIVATED: Mt Ruapehu will test even the most patient person. Remember the snow missions make the winter bearable. Also, the winter will be over before you know it. Make the most of the snow and enjoy it! Froth or moth…

STUDY THE WEATHER: I recommend a mixture of metvuw.com/forecastcharts for weather/cloud/rain approaching, snow-forecast.com for snowfall estimates, and metservice for the added weather geek status. Also, it’s good to remember you have to be in to win. Being hung over on a pow day is no excuse… ever

DO A DAY TRIP: I swear every time I do one it’s my last, but sure enough next mid week powder day window I'm in. Leave really early, share the driving, drink some Powerade, sing some songs. Mid week with a dusting can not only make you feel like you’re winning, but telling your work mates how good it was is unbeatable… just don’t brag if you pulled a sicky!

DRIVE TO SURVIVE: Remember each and every weekend you go down that you probably have friends doing the same drive. No one wants to lose friends or see crashes. Be courteous. If you’re going slow and holding up a queue, pull over where safe. If you’re tired have a rest - don’t risk it. Don’t overtake in stupid places - if you know the road well then you know your spots. Don’t put your own, your passengers, or other peoples lives at risk.

GET SOME NEW GEAR: You know you’ll be way more amped to get to the mountain if you have a new board or set of planks to look forward to. Try ‘on mountain demos’ to get a feel for the latest tech. Remember where you’re riding and how you ride. New gear is awesome! Yeeeeow!

MOUNTAIN ETHICS: Scope the landing before you jump - people, rocks and huge cliffs are all common so look before you leap. Learn how the T-bar queues work and don’t snake the line. Move forward and let a couple in front then move again. Don’t duck ropes, and chill out around Slow signs.

GO HIKING: Ruapehu has the best hikeable in bounds terrain in the country. A hike of two minutes through to half an hour can see you scoring freshies all day. Check out a trail map and ask where others are going. Hike the summit on a calm spring day - the view alone is worth the effort.

MAKE NEW FRIENDS: Ride with new people. We are a group of people on a similar page. Through my involvement in snowboarding I’ve met so many people and made so many friends from all over the country. Each has a different approach to riding, a different line and a different idea of what’s fun. Mix it up, play around, and fall over. Slide like a penguin on the ice. Ride in the rain… but only once.

PACK YOUR LUNCH: Prepare early, take some noodles, a muesli bar and a drink. The prices in the café can make you want to take up a night job. Here’s a tip. Put some frankfurters in a thermos of boiling water. Take up some long buns, and there you have American hot dogs for lunch. Sauce optional (but highly recommended).

HAVE FUN: Laugh, try new tricks, spray your mates, show off and be stoked with the small stuff. Be thankful for how fortunate we are to be able to do what we do here in New Zealand. So many people would love to experience what we so easily take for granted. Don’t get angry - I’m sure the guy who just cut you off, or scratched your new skis, didn’t intentionally plan to ruin your day.

Stay motivated, make the effort, try new tricks, explore new terrain. Make new

friends, drive safe and have an amazing winter. Definitely pull a sicky and score a

pow day. It’s as good as the volcano gets! Shaka!

KLAUS OBERMEYERTHE HISTORY OF A SKI ENTHUSIASTKlaus Obermeyer's enthusiasm is contagious, his energy seemingly endless, his optimism without bounds. It all began in 1919, in Oberstaufen, Germany, the small Bavarian alpine village in which Klaus was born. He was an avid rock climber, as well as a ski mountaineer, racer and jumper.

In 1947, Klaus arrived in Aspen, Colorado, where Friedl Pfeiffer had opened the Aspen Ski School. At night, he followed his entrepreneurial spirit. Sensing that people would spend more time on the slopes if they were warm and comfortable he founded Sport Obermeyer in the attic of his home.

There, one of the first of many innovations was born in the form of a down ski parka stitched together from his goose down comforter. Soon after came high-altitude suntan lotion, turtlenecks, nylon windshirts, mirrored sunglasses and more. In 1961, the first Sport Obermeyer factory warehouse opened in Aspen, and the innovations continued with “soft-shell” jackets, double lens goggles, and the first waterproof-breathable fabrics.

TRAINING PARTNERS UNDER ONE ROOFRussell ThompsonSkiing & snowboarding finally has the perfect training partner; stand up paddle boarding (SuP). I’ve been all around the world searching for an activity exactly like this and apart from surfing, few are as complete in satisfying both body and soul. Not only does SuP deliver that unique physical sensation akin to being on snow, but it also offers that intimate connection to nature so often missed with other sports.

Some year’s back, after a 32-year professional skiing career, I had retired to pursue my passion for surfing. I ventured into SuP purely to supplement my desire to be out on the water when the waves were small. Before I realized what was happening, a couple of years went by without a single ski run being taken. My attention to SuP expanded from flat water to surfing, running rivers and white water rapids.

The practical value of SuP to skiing was driven home this past February. I found myself back in Colorado, this northern winter, for a photo shoot with world renowned travel and adventure photographer, Chris McLennan. A solid three months paddling throughout New Zealand directly preceded my return to snow. The transition was as if I had never stepped off my skis. My performance was equal to two years ago. How could this be so?

Ok - being a pro skier for so long would have cemented some pretty strong motor skills that never left me. However, my

skiing specific muscles should have quietly atrophied away to only rear up in complaint through soreness

and poor performance, but they didn’t. I was as ‘in tune’ as at any time of my career. It had to

be the SuP.

These sports supremely compliment each other, especially through strong use of the body’s core - specifically all those

muscles attached to the pelvic girdle. To understand this it is important to appreciate that both skiers

and paddlers need to physically create, and or control, torque. Torque is that something

that produces, or tends to produce, rotation.

In a nutshell: the skier / boarder gains

momentum courtesy of gravity pulling him / her straight down the fall line. To control this speed of movement, torque needs to be created so as to produce rotation to help in the process of making a turn. Same goes for surfing down a wave on your SuP.

Paddlers, on the other hand, need to stabilize and transfer the rotation generated from the torque of a paddle stroke (that tendency for the board to turn because you are applying a force outside of a central point, the point down between your feet) into linear momentum (make the board move forward in a straight line).

Both sports compliment each other because the same rotary muscles are used, albeit in reverse, sort of a yin and yang situation. This opposed form of training is the ideal setup, thus one sports benefits the other. Plus they both use those muscles while in motion, something no gym workout can duplicate.

Skiers and snowboarders can tend to underestimate the importance of the core. Their focus goes to their legs, when true power and control generates from that pelvic girdle. Just as it is with SuP, the power and control of your stroke is not from your arms but from your core.

So for all you skiers and snowboarders out there who have not tried stand up paddle boarding, then I say “you must”. Not only because, in itself, it is an activity right

up there with being on the snow, but it will also be the best cross training you have ever done for winter. For any paddler who has not skied, try it this winter. Your SuP skills will likely make learning to ski a breeze.
