Drive-up Trip —The Midweek Mammoth trip, February 13-18, promises great fun. Happy New Year! As I write this article pre-Christmas, So, if you have not yet signed up for one of the upcoming Mammoth trips, now’s the time! By the way, our numbers did not qualily us for bulk lift tickets at Mammoth. We needed a minimum of 50 peopleand we were at just about 30.

So what records can we set as a club in 2011? As President of BSSC, I havethree wishes.....1. An increased membership2. More and varied activities and events3. New volunteers to serve on the club’s Board of Directors

“Members on the Mend”Quick recovery wishes to Bob Santee, who is now resting reasonably comfortably after a ruptured gallbladder and emergency surgery. Bob is one of our board mem-bers who has generously donated his time and talents to the club for many, many years. Truly a quiet and gracious giver to BSSC.

Elaine Kermes is doing well in her recovery after having a kidney removed. Hopeto see your smiling face soon Elaine!

Have you guessed already? Here’s her bio... I am a Jersey girl at heart, born in Hackensack, New Jersey….but am now a California girl with no plans of leaving anytime soon! I was very fortunate to grow up living on a lake and learned to swim, sail and skate at a very young age. I went to school K-12 in the same small town, which was later repeated by my 2 children. I learned to ski locally at a small area that was only 30 minutes away and started teaching children to ski at this same area while in High School. I later returned to this ski area to work as a full-time Ski School Director and Ski Patrol when my children were little and just learning how to ski!

Things that you probably don’t know about me…I took 14 years of classical piano lessons and played the organ in church…I was a Twirler in High School…I sold real estate for 15 years…I swam in college (Colgate University) and later coached YMCA swimmers who went to the Olympic Trials…I was Sigourney Weaver’s stand-in for the movie “Working Girl”…I was PSIA certified and was also a member of the National Ski Patrol…I had my own limo business driving to the NY/NJ local airports…I was married to a Golf Pro and we were on “the tour” for several years…I was Class President for both my Junior and Senior years in High School… I kayaked 135 miles down the coast of the Baja in the Sea of Cortez from Loreto to La Paz…I played Varsity tennis in both High School and College…I still belong to my NJ Ski Club, who owns a house in Vermont that sleeps 46 people…I taught Physical Education & Swimming for grades Pre-K through 12 for 7 years at a private school…I “adopted” a family in Belize…I majored in Economics in College…I am ambidextrous.

As many of you do know, I love to sail and ski, and am often torn between the two when choosing vacation destinations! I especially enjoy doing the research and the actual planning prior to a trip, so won’t be sur-prised that I like to be a trip leader for the club. And now I am able to share my love for these activities with my grandsons, which is such a joy! Boat ownership, with 2 wonderful partners (hence the boat name “Tres Amigas”), is another of my self-indulgences. The anchorages in Catalina have become a “second home” during the warmer months.

I am proud to be a member of BSSC and to serve on its Board of Directors. As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now….I am your President, Connie Peacock

With Dump report after Dump Report coming from Mammoth - we are going to have a great ski season. Here is information and hints to make it better. #1. Make sure your equipment bags, carry ons, anything personal you take on the bus has your i.d. on it. Duct tape comes in all colors, and with a bit of talent or not, you can make your ski/ boot or clothes bag stand out so that you can easily see it even in snowy bad light. Finding your equipment and getting it to your condo. First step to a good trip. #2 Be aware that Mammoth Transit System has changed their route numbers. Snow-flower used to be #19 on the Red Line. The Red Line still travels to Snowflower, but the stop is #4. #3 Check with your condo captain and condo mates when you arrive, determine on a key hiding location or exchange cell phone #s to coordinate entry into your condo.. Under no circumstance should the condo be unlocked. This practice safeguards the condo’s contents and everyone’s belongings. #4 Secret Weapon for odor and moisture. Fabric dryer sheets work great in ski boots or a helmet to diffuse odor and absorb moisture. Just put a zip lock bag of dryer sheets in your boot bag pocket. Heating your boots in the morning with the dryer sheets in them adds a nice start to the skiing experience.

Bill Clark led a drive-up trip to Mammoth to start off the season. Thursday night reports of rain had everyone worried, but fortunately our worries were in vain. The snow was great and skiing was wonderful. Bill presented two very success cocktail parties, where talks of the racing on Saturday was the main topic of conversation.

Izzy supplied a Birthday cake for Terrie Seaton, Connie Peacock and Maxine Hanlon. A great start to the season.

With all this great snow, sign up now for our next trip.

January Meetings

#5 Big Change: Rental lockers on all floors except the Main Lodge first floor have increased in price to $4 per token, and each entry requires 2 tokens. Also there is no longer a basket check. In the area where Basket Check used to be on the 2nd floor of the Main Lodge is Lost and Found. At Lost and Found, you will find multi-entry boot lockers for $10 a day, and can rent either a smaller boot locker downstairs or multi-day ski lockers starting with a minimum of two days for $13 per day. Teaming up with another trip member / friend will reduce the cost, and will require a little coordination. #6 Don’t forget the best way to travel to Mammoth is on the bus with Balboa. Leaving the Tee Room on January 6th --- First bus of the season. Contact Christy or Maxine to check on a last minute spot. General travel news: Recently American Airlines announced a new price structure on Boot bags, Ski bags, etc., which would have increased baggage fees to $200. Due to pressure from National Federation of Ski Club Councils, FWSA, and ski councils throughout the states, AA has reversed their policy and count ski and boots as one bag.. Check with any air-line you are traveling with about such restrictions. In some cases if you pack clothes in a boot bag, it changes the status of that bag, and the airline charges extra. Pack carefully for your travel.. Have a fun, safe skiing season. Maxine Hanlon.

December Highlights...Recap & Photos

Boat Parade —The rainy weather slowed down the 2010 Newport Beach Boat Parade, but nothing could dampen the An-nual BSSC Boat Parade Party held at Ernie Minney’s on Saturday, December 18. Ernie’s warm welcome cut through the cold and occasionally damp outside weath-er. The hosts of Balboa members and their guests ended on the inside looking out. But good food, gener-ous libations and friends made the evening a success. Special thanks to Betty Bains for chairing this special event, Monica McCarty for being the first person there and hard-working throughout the event, and, of course, to all of the many people who contributed the make this a special event. Many, many thanks to our host Ernie Minney and Holiday Greetings to you all.

Holiday Santa Sock Hop —Our well-attended holiday meeting/party in December also heralded crowning a new Snow King and Snow Queen for the year 2010. “This award honors the man and woman who have been active overall in the club - skiing activities, sharing in duties of running the club, off the hill activities and promoting good fellowship among members.” Connie Peacock, BSSC President, had the honor of announcing and crowning the new recipients, Bob Santee and Sheila Van Guilder.

Bob Santee was recognized for his consistent, efficient, and long-standing service in the role of VP of Finance. Bob expertly juggles two club bank accounts, two check books, two accounting books and the club’s status as a “California Seller of Travel.” He turns around check requests within the necessary time frames and painstak-ingly prepares the club budget each year for the Board to consider and vote on. Bob keeps the club’s financial wheels on the bus turning and we recognize him with this award to say thank you for his continuous and ex-emplary efforts!

Sheila Van Guilder was honored for her continued ser-vice to the club since serving as President for 2 years. During Sheila’s presidency, the club continued to grow its membership and to expand its variety of activities. And, as if being a successful President wasn’t enough, Sheila has taken on in 2010 the role of VP of Trips for the Orange Ski Council. This responsibility is an enor-mous one where she is the person in charge of handling the travel arrangements for the Orange Council’s partici-pation in the Far West ski trip each season.

So we say thank-you to Sheila for representing BSSC on the Orange Council Board and for her continued sup-port of our club!
