venturing into at this point. Snippetz didn’t let that stop us from getting our feet wet. So join us as we sink into the mysterious aquatic world of the Mariana Trench.

WHAT IS THEMARIANA TRENCH?

The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of any ocean in the world and is located in the Pacifi c Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands (hence the name). Fun fact: the Mariana Islands, also called Las Marianas, were named in honor of the Spanish Queen Mariana of Austria, widow of Philip IV of Spain.

Anyway, the islands are part of an arc of islands that was indirectly formed by the subduction of the edge of the Pacifi c Plate beneath the smaller Mariana Plate. The movement of these two plates causes water that is trapped in the Mariana Plate to explode upward, forming the volcanic Mariana Islands.

The trench itself was discovered during the Challenger expedition in 1875, in which the recorded depth was 26,850 feet, based on the sounding technology used at the time. As technology advanced, so did the accuracy of the measurements for the trench’s depths that were recorded on subsequent expeditions.

On average, the trench is about 43 miles wide but measures 1,580 miles long. The really remarkable part is that, at its deepest, an area called the Challenger Deep, the trench reaches a depth of at least 6.831 miles. Not impressed? Consider this: Mount Everest, as we all know, is the highest point on the earth. It measures 29,035 feet. If Mount Everest were dropped into the Challenger Deep, its summit would still be 7,166 feet below the surface of the ocean.

EXPLORING THE MARIANA TRENCH

Due to its incredible depth, the Mariana Trench is shrouded in darkness, with frigid water temperatures and crushing water pressure at 8 tons or 16,000 pounds per square inch (psi). To put it into perspective, it takes 300 psi to crack a macadamia nut; 15 psi to crack a human skull; and 5 psi to collapse your windpipe. Yup, the pressure down there is pretty intense.

While it was observed in some areas of the Mariana Trench that life could be sustained, many scientists posited that life simply couldn’t handle the intense pressure of the Challenger Deep. But to truly know the answer to such a question, we just had to see for ourselves.

The Challenger Deep was fi rst explored in 1960 by Jacques Piccard, a Swiss scientist,

who worked in coordination with United States Navy Lt. Donald Walsh. The team used a U.S. Navy submersible, called the Trieste to descend to 35,810 feet into the Challenger Deep. Another fun fact: the Challenger Deep was fi rst located in 1951 by the British survey ship, Challenger II (hence its name). Their expedition was the fi rst and only of its kind for more than 50 years.

The descent took the pair fi ve hours to complete and they were only able to spend 20 minutes at the bottom.

MARIANA TRENCHMARINE LIFE

You’ve probably guessed that the water in the Mariana Trench reaches very cold temperatures the further down you go. At the bottom of the Challenger Deep, the water temperature is about 33-39º Fahrenheit. Knowing that, it might surprise you to learn that the temperature in certain parts of the sea fl oor in the trench can be as high as 572º Fahrenheit. The reason behind the incredible temperature discrepancy? Hydrothermal vents. These vents are formed by the spreading tectonic plates and release hydrogen sulfi de and other minerals into the ocean from below.

Consequently, the marine life that resides within the Mariana Trench, especially closer to the trench’s fl oor, have adapted by developing certain proteins that allow them to eat, process food and reproduce in spite of the radical temperature differences.

One such unique species is the vent crab,

which actually thrives near hydrothermal vents. Angler Fish, those creepy fi sh that have the massive teeth and the bioluminescent dangly thing hanging off the front of their heads, also live in the Mariana Trench.

One variety of snailfi sh was found at 26,715 feet, offi cially setting a new record for the deepest living fi sh known to man. The fi sh was a white translucent color with broad wing-like fi ns and an eel-like tail. It was seen slowly gliding over the bottom of the ocean fl oor.

Although there has been some debate as to the veracity of his claims, Piccard recorded seeing a fl atfi sh of about one foot long and a shrimp during his voyage. However, in July 2011, a research expedition deployed untethered dropcams called landers that were equipped with digital video and lights to explore the ocean fl oor. The dropcams recorded many living organisms during the expedition, including some gigantic single-cell amoebas, measuring more than 4 inches long.

But those are just a few examples of the estimated 5,000 newly-identifi ed species discovered since mankind has ventured into the depths of the Mariana Trench. And while it’s tempting to assume that those lifeforms are the result of years of evolution and adaptability, that’s simply not the case. In fact, scientists have stated that some of the species we’ve discovered in trenches around the world are actually the most prehistoric lifeforms on the entire planet; some of which have remained unchanged

for millions of years.

MARIANA TRENCHSNIPPETZ

At least 22 trenches have • been identifi ed throughout the world’s oceans; 18 of those are located in the Pacifi c Ocean, including the Mariana Trench.

Even though the Mariana • Trench is the deepest location on earth, it isn’t the closest to the earth’s core. Because the earth’s radius is about 16 miles less at the North and South Poles than at the equator, certain parts of the Arctic Ocean are at least 8.1 miles closer to the earth’s core than the Challenger Deep portion of the trench.

Film director James Cameron • reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench on March 26, 2012 in a submersible vessel called the Deepsea Challenger.

Scientists speculate that • studying rocks from trenches such as the Mariana Trench could lead to a better understanding of the earthquakes that create the extremely powerful and devastating tsunamis that have struck around the Pacifi c Rim throughout history.

Humans are more • knowledgeable about outer space than we are about the deepest parts of the ocean, due to the extreme pressure and complete lack of light.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE

We want our children to grow up demonstrating respect for others. We

like to hear that our kids are re-spectful to teachers, other adults, and their friends. The most ef-fective way for children to learn respect for others is to learn self-respect. The way they learn self-respect is by example, for the most part.

When children see their parents denying their own passions, self-integrity, and self-compassion, they learn that that reality is con-

sidered ‘normal’. They learn that to deny one’s passions in life is expected, especially if the self-de-nial is ‘for’ someone else.

In many cases, parents or one of the parents will deny what they want to do in life in order to show responsibility and commitment to the family. Many times, there can be a balance between a par-ent working toward living a pas-sionate life and still owning re-sponsibility for what has already been chosen, such as children.

When parents can ind that bal-ance and begin working toward it with enthusiasm and an appre-ciation for life, it begins demon-strating self-respect. As that self-respect grows and deepens, chil-dren begin learning from it and that becomes the ‘new’ normal.

Self-respect is also deined in how we treat ourselves verbally/mentally. If we criticize ourselves, allow others to criticize us, self-berate, and self-judge, we set the expectation that that is normal as well.

Self-respect is not to be underes-timated. It’s vital to mental, emo-tional, and physical health. In our

society, however, self-respect is diminished and replaced with a group mentality expectation. Do as others do and say as others say. Where is the individuality in that?

THE MAGNETIC POWER OF

SELF-CONFIDENT PEOPLE

PART 6.3MAGNETIC SELF CONFIDENCE IS INFECTIOUS NOT NOXIOUS

By Dr. Ron D. Ross

Don’t you just love to be around people who are happy, even in the midst

of their every-day-battles? It makes you feel like you too can be hap-py and live life to the fullest, even though you have aches and pains, frustrations and discouragements, failures and successes.

People who are self-confi dent are appealing and delightful to be around. You WANT to be around them because their persona is infec-tions, in the most positive sense of that word.Something that is infections is eas-ily caught, easily spread from one person to another. Obviously, that could mean a virus such as a cold, but it can also mean a broad smile, a cheerful demeanor, and an optimis-tic attitude, for they too are infec-tious.

Without effort self-confi dent people infect others with their joy, they transfer their poise and contentment in a way that brings out the best in everyone.

The dark side of the word infectious is noxious. This word, noxious, is defi ned as, “harmful or injurious to health or physical well being; morally harmful; corrupting, perni-cious.” That is an excellent descrip-tion of someone who is negative, someone who always sees gloom and doom even though the sun is bright and the future hopeful.

Think of the word obnoxious. There you have a combination of thought – ob is a Latin prefi x mean-ing “toward,” “to,” “on,” or “over,” and noxious, meaning “hurtful or

destructive.” It is a pretty good de-scription of a person who is insuf-ferable, repugnant, and even hate-ful. To be around them is to be pol-luted by their personality born virus of permanent pessimismHave you noticed how easy it is to assume the attitudes and scripts of nasty, negative, and critical people? Here is an example of what I am talking about:

The townhomes we live in were re-cently ordered painted by our HOA. My next door neighbor and I were standing outside watching the paint-ers. He began to complain about their work ethic and their painting skills. I caught myself about to join in on his noxious strain of conver-sation, and I decided not to partici-pate.

“I don’t know,” I said. “It looks to me like they did a pretty good job on the houses across the street. I ex-pect our units will look real good as well.”

My neighbor took my lead and said, “Yea, they do look pretty good, don’t they!”

That is how you stop the viral effect of negativity. Simply turn it around and make a bold and positive state-ment.

You want a magnetic personality, you want a self-confi dent demeanor. Start today to see the sunshine, not the clouds. See the rainbow, not the storms. Point out the pleasure and the pain will dissipate.

Many years ago I heard someone say something I have never forgotten. I have tried to discover the source but so far do not know who said it. Here is what he said, “The law of the pos-itive attracts and builds. The law of the negative repels and destroys.”

Which law applies to the way you think, speak and act each day of your life?

My recipe for okra roasted in a cast-iron skillet is a simple technique that beauti-fully showcases okra in a warm salad in all of its summer glory.

SKILLET-ROASTED OKRA AND SHRIMP SALAD

1 pound peeled, large (26-30 count) raw shrimp, deveined3 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, divided1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon red pepper fl akes1/2 pound fresh okra, rinsed and dried thor-oughly1 pint grape tomatoes 1 tablespoon Balsamic or apple-cider vin-egar1/4 teaspoon sugar3 garlic cloves, minced2 tablespoon chopped fresh basil or fl at-leaf parsley1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice2 cups chopped Romaine lettuce2 cups arugula

1. Place shrimp in small bowl and sprinkle with 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/2 tea-spoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper fl akes. Combine well and set aside.2. Heat a large, cast-iron skillet over me-dium-high heat for 1-2 minutes. Cut okra pods in half, lengthwise. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil to skillet. Add okra, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and red pepper fl akes, and saute over medium-high heat 3 minutes. Add tomatoes, vinegar and sugar, and saute 3 minutes or until skins begin to burst. Transfer okra mixture to a large bowl. 3. Add shrimp to skillet. Saute 2-3 minutes or just until the shrimp turns pink. Add gar-lic and saute 30 seconds. Stir in okra mix-ture, and saute for 1-2 minutes or until hot. Stir in the basil or parsley. Sprinkle with lemon juice.4. Place Romaine and arugula into indi-vidual salad bowls or on a large serving platter. Spoon shrimp and okra mixture on top of lettuce. Serve with wedge of lemon. Serves 4.

IN DEFENSEOF OKRA

The words “slimy,” “gelatinous” or “mushy” aren’t associated with very many vegetables ... except when one

is discussing okra. Okra was introduced to America via African slave ships and was commonly known as gumbo, which means okra in some African dialects. African captives planted and prepared okra dishes from their native land and combined them with vegetables that grew in America. To-day, okra is as Southern as sweet tea, but it has spread around the United States and also prepared in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines.

Okra pods are at their best from late June through September. Because okra thrives in hot climates and requires full sun, it stores a thick, watery liquid inside its pod. This fl avorful, gelatinous liquid is the perfect thickener for soups and stews.

Okra is a rich source of dietary fi ber and is a good source of vitamins and minerals. These include vitamin A, B, C and K, as well as zinc, copper, potassium, manga-nese and magnesium.

Okra is at its most fl avorful when its pods are small, tender and slender. For roasting, frying or grilling, select pods that are 1-4 inches long. Longer pods tend to be tough, and should be used only for long stewing methods like soups, stews and gumbos.

Choose okra pods that are fresh, bright-colored, fi rm and have a bit of fuzz. The stem ends turn brown quickly, and this is normal; however, there shouldn’t be brown spots or wrinkling on the pods. Okra should be stored loosely wrapped in a plastic bag in the crisper section of the refrigerator and used within a few days.

To avoid the slimy texture that’s often asso-ciated with okra, follow these simple tips:• Wash and dry the pods thoroughly before using;• Use the whole pod, or wait to cut the okra until immediately before using;• Use the whole pod for quick cooking methods -- grilling, roasting, frying -- to reduce slime;• Don’t crowd the okra, as it promotes

SOCIAL SECURITY’SMY ACCOUNT

If you’ve lost or misplaced your Medicare card, you now can get a replacement online -- at the

Social Security My Account site.

My Account is a place where you can sign up to track earnings, change your address and much more, and Social Security encourages you to use this online feature.

At the bottom of the page where you can create a new My Account is a tiny note about blocking electronic access. If you wish to block access to your online Social Security ac-count (for example, if you’ve been the victim of domestic violence or the victim of identity theft), you can do that online as well. If you later decide you want access, you can contact Social Security to unblock it.

If you have a security freeze or fraud alert on your Experian credit report, you cannot create a My Account. Here’s why: When you sign up for an account, it looks at items in your credit fi le and asks you questions about them as a means of identify-ing you. For example, it might ask the price range of your auto pay-ment, or the last fi ve digits of your credit card, or the amount of your mortgage payment -- all informa-tion that’s on your credit report.

If you want to receive a paper copy of your Social Security Statement without doing it online, you can print out the “Request for Social Security Statement” (Form SSA-7004) and mail it in. You’ll get your paper copy in four to six weeks.

The general number to call for So-cial Security questions is 1-800-772-1213. To learn more about the Social Security My Account, go online to www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

PLANTINGYOUR OWN

INSECTREPELLANTS

Just in case you needed another reason to plant herbs I’ve got a really good one. And it’s not

because they are wonderful to cook with, or make tea with, or even be-cause of their amazing health ben-efi ts. It’s because if you plant herbs along with your other fl owers and vegetables they will help fi ght off many unwanted pests! I love buying things that achieve more than one purpose. And even better is having something that has many uses and is constantly rejuvenating itself!

In addition to having an insect re-pelling quality many herbs are also planted for their fl owers. Plants like marigolds are avoided by deer, re-

pel rabbits, and are also effective at repelling nematodes and white fl y. Nasturtiums actually trap aphids as well as keep away white fl ies and cucumber beetles. Nasturtiums also attract many predatory insects that kill many additional harmful insects to your garden. Chives have a really pretty bloom and they repel aphids and carrot rust fl y.

Many herbs used for cooking are also great at deterring pests. Garlic repels aphids, root maggot, white fl ies, carrot rust fl y and vampires! Both Oregano and Sage repel the cabbage moth. Cilantro, as well as making great salsa, repels aphids, potato beetles and spider mites and Dill attracts predatory wasps that eat caterpillars. Pennyroyal and Spearmint are both your offi cial ‘Ant B-Gone’ herbs and the Colora-do potato beetle can be repelled by Flax and Horseradish. Those slimy slugs and snails can be kept away with Rosemary. And while eating a salad Caprese, the Tomato Horn-worm (yuck!) is repelled by Basil (Yum!).

This is a great excuse to plant twice as many herbs as you already have and a great reason to plant a wide variety of herbs to keep away a wide variety of unwanted insects. And it certainly won’t hurt your cooking either!

AGENT ORANGEAPPEAL DENIED

A U.S. District Court has dis-missed a lawsuit fi led by a Blue Water veteran who

appealed his denial of benefi ts after he claimed exposure to Agent Or-ange while on a ship off the coast of Vietnam.

Veterans who had boots on the ground in Vietnam have a presump-tion of AO exposure if they come down with certain illnesses. They were either there or they weren’t. Blue Water veterans served on ships off the coast, and they have a tough time proving exposure.

Consider where AO went: To the ground to defoliate, into the wa-terways, into the bays ... and onto anything pulled out of the water

such as anchors, the water spray it-self, wash down of planes on carrier decks, and more.In 2011, the Institute of Medicine’s study of Agent Orange illness among Blue Water veterans deter-mined that there were a number of possible routes of exposure. Its 2012 update said that there is no reason to exclude water-based veterans from benefi ts.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma IS, how-ever, on the approved Agent Orange Blue Water list. Color me confused. If one disease can be traced back to offshore exposure and be listed as a presumptive disease, why not the others?

See www.publichealth.va.gov for lists of ships in Vietnam. Go to bluewaternavy.org for reports on the water in Da Nang harbor, AO on the carriers and more. See the Up-date Logs.

If you do an online search for the appeal, look for United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims rul-ing on GRAY v McDONALD (No. 13.3339). Don’t miss the dissection of the terms brown water, blue wa-ter and the various types of water.

HONEY HASSWEET HEALING

QUALITIESDEAR DR. ROACH: I am diabetic and had a sore on my big toe about a year ago that wouldn’t heal, so my podiatrist sent me to a doctor at a hospital wound center. After three visits, the doctor started talking about removing a bone from my toe, and I refused to accept it.

I came across a catalog that had al-ternative remedies for some health problems. One of the items was a wound honey, used to treat dia-betic sores and bed-pressure sores. I ordered some and started using it, and within three weeks my sore had started to heal. I went back to my regular podiatrist and told him what I had used, and he was aware of that type of treatment. More can be found out about the healing prop-erties of wound honey on the Inter-net.

I felt compelled to share this with others who may be facing the same problem. It is a far better option than amputation. -- L.G.

ANSWER: Honey has been used since ancient times for wound heal-ing, and modern science confi rms it is an effective way of treating superfi cial burns and ulcers. It has been shown to have antibacterial properties, as well as antimicrobial properties, and is a potentially use-ful treatment for many burns and ulcers. I have found that few of my colleagues are aware of this.

I have two concerns to pass along with your story. First, honey may

not be appropriate for all types of diabetic sores. Honey has been used for superfi cial and slightly deeper ulcers, which we call stage 2 and 3. The evidence for honey in a stage 4 ulcer is less clear.

Also, one needs to be extraordinarily careful about the quality of medical information available on the Inter-net. I strongly recommend starting with Medline Plus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus), which references trusted sources for information.

***DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 82-year-old male who exercises regu-larly for strength, cardiovascular fi tness, agility and fl exibility. I pre-fer stair-climbing workouts rang-ing from about 20 to 115 fl ights of stairs. I would like your opinion on this type of exercise. I have what appears to be some moderate knee arthritis and have heard that stair climbing can be harmful to the knees. I do not experience knee pain while climbing stairs. -- D.K.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis used to be called “degenerative” or “wear and tear” arthritis, both of which suggest that you could be damaging your knees from exercise. However, this doesn’t seem to be true. Exer-cise turns out to be one of the most important treatments of osteoarthri-tis, and one that shows a signifi cant improvement in function and qual-ity of life, far better than the medi-cations many people take. Most people should start slow and build up, but you are exercising at quite an intense level. I offer you con-gratulations and don’t recommend stopping.

The arthritis booklet discusses os-teoarthritis, rheumatoid rthritis, and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to an-swer individual letters, but he will incorpo-rate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

MOMENTS IN TIMETHE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On July 4, 1826, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respec-tively, die on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Indepen-dence. Both men had been central in drafting the historic document.

• On June 30, 1859, Frenchman Emile Blondin becomes the fi rst daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Wearing pink tights and a yellow tunic, Blondin crossed a cable about 2 inches in diameter and 1,100-feet long using only a balancing pole.

• On July 5, 1865, in London, revival-ist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mis-sion, modeled after the British army, with women given ranks equal with men. In 1878, the organization was renamed the Salvation Army, and two years later

the fi rst U.S. branch opened in Pennsyl-vania.

• On July 2, 1881, President James A. Garfi eld is shot as he walks through a railroad waiting room in Washington, D.C. His assailant, Charles J. Guiteau, was a disgruntled and perhaps insane of-fi ce seeker. Garfi eld died 80 days later of blood poisoning.

• On July 1, 1951, Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller pitches the third no-hit game of his career, making him the fi rst mod-ern pitcher ever to throw three no-hitters. Feller made his fi rst start in 1936, when he was just 17.

• On July 3, 1985, the blockbuster ac-tion-comedy “Back to the Future,” in which the iconic DeLorean concept car is transformed into a time-travel device, premieres.

• On June 29, 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docks with the Rus-sian space station Mir to form the larg-est man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth. It was the 100th human space mis-sion in U.S. history.

by Samantha Weaver• It was U.S. Vice President Hubert Hum-phrey who made the following sage obser-vation: “Compassion is not weakness and concern for the unfortunate is not social-ism.”

• Chop suey is not actually a Chinese dish; it was invented in California.

• Dick Simon, one of the founders of the Simon and Schuster publishing company, was struggling in his business when he vis-ited his aunt in 1924. She had been looking for a book of crossword puzzles to give to her daughter, but the puzzles being rela-tively new (fi rst appearing in newspapers in 1913), there was no compilation avail-able. Seeing an opportunity for his fl edg-ling business, Simon and his partner, Lin-coln Schuster, published a book of puzzles right away. The puzzle book was an instant best seller, and its revenues supported Si-mon and Schuster while the publishing company was establishing itself.

THE RULES OF MONEYQuickly now, which would you

rather have at the end of 31 days – a million dollars or a penny that

has been doubled each and every day? If you are like most people you would have chosen the $1 million. Unfortunately, like most people you would have chosen poor-ly. That humble penny, doubling every day, would have grown to over $10 million -- $10,737,418.24 to be exact. Don’t believe me? Do the math. One cent becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight, eight sixteen and on it goes until 5 million becomes 10 million. That is the power of compounded interest, a power that is of-ten overlooked and grossly misunderstood when we talk about money.

Here are a few other rules of money that are oftentimes overlooked.

Is It A Need Or Is It A WantHow we choose to spend our money is a choice. By understanding the difference between what is really needed and what it is we want we can avoid becoming a vic-tim of circumstance. Our fi nancial needs are really quite simple, food, shelter and clothing. Everything else is merely a want; however, our wants can be endless. Too of-ten I fi nd that many have put themselves in an unnecessary position of hardship (read debt) because they failed to realize the dif-ference between what is needed and what is wanted. By making the choice to live well within your means you can put yourself in the position of fi nancial control. And that is a strong fi nancial place to be.

The Endless Search For MoreIt is only natural to want a better life. A raise at work or a new position may well make it possible to get a nicer home or a better car. Unfortunately, for too many, it becomes far too easy to presume on the fu-ture – that those raises and promotions will continue – and establish a lifestyle based upon those assumptions. When the raises and promotions don’t come they often-times put themselves in the position where

debt is used to satisfy their expectations. Thus creating a lifestyle, based upon debt, that can lead to fi nancial ruin. It is better to fi nd happiness somewhere other than in our possessions.

Every Option Has CostsBy understanding the opportunity costs of our fi nancial choices and making the time to understand those choices we can make better fi nancial decisions. Every time we choose to spend money we are making a choice. We are giving up other opportu-nities in order to fulfi ll a current need or want. Is it better to buy new furniture or set aside the money for the kid’s college education? I don’t know the answer. That is your choice. But I do know it is better to be in control of your decisions than to allow circumstances, or worse, short term wants to drive your choices.

Sunken Cost MythWe have all been in situations where we have incurred expenses that can never be recovered. Whether it be a car that needs a new motor, an investment that only goes South or something else that seems to re-quire an endless stream of money. The sunken cost myth is just that, a myth, a be-lief that somehow if we only invest more time, more money or more effort we can recover what has been promised. That is a fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad. In investing, I fi nd too often investors will hold onto an investment and even invest more with the hopes that they will at some point at least break even. The cost unfortu-nately was lost opportunity and better use of resources. Make your decision to invest your time, your money, or your talents based upon the facts today and not upon your choices made yesterday.

RiskWith every fi nancial choice comes risk, especially when we make the decision to invest. When we accept a greater risk with our investments it is reasonable to expect

a potentially greater return. If you choose to invest in US government bonds you can expect a high degree of safety and a very low return on your investment. When you invest in a US corporation you have the op-portunity for a much higher return, howev-er, that return carries with it the risk of los-ing some or even all of your investment. I would encourage you to avoid investments that promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.

Sadly money does not come with operating instructions. For most of us a lot of time was spent on learning how to make money. Unfortunately, throughout that education, not a lot of time was spent on how to man-age money and use it effectively. Make the time to learn how to make sound fi nancial choices. In the long-term you’ll be glad you did.

“…I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know how to live with abundance…I have strength for every-thing through him who empowers me.” Philippians4:12-13
