“Relics are treasured as somethingclose to the divine.”

- Sarah Vowell, American author

We think of relics in association with religious beliefs and practices – usually thought of as a part of the

body of a saint or other venerated person in history. Venerate comes from the Latin “ven-erare,” which means literally to regard with reverence and respect. Relics can also be possessions of the venerated person, i.e., clothing, tools, jewelry, books. Many reli-gions recognize relics including those based on Christianity such as the Catholic religion to Buddhism and even Islam.

HISTORY AND SYMBOLSThe ancient Greeks commonly had relics in veneration of heroes. These relics were not typically parts of the hero’s body but would most likely be possessions such as weapons, furniture or other objects used by the hero. Whereas a Christian relic may be thought to possess spiritual pow-er, which can possibly prompt miracu-lous events, an ancient Greek relic would be an item thought to protect a person, a city or group of people.

Even though Buddha did not want relics collected, his body was reportedly divid-ed into eight parts at his death. In Bud-dhism, relics are enshrined in vesicles called stupas. These stupas can be the basis of temples which are built around them. Relics of Buddha are said to pro-mote enlightenment.

In Christianity, it is reported that the ear-liest recorded exhumation was in 354 A.D., of Saint Babylas at Antioch. By 787, the practice of harvesting relics, so to speak, was in full swing. So much so that the Second Council of Nicaea (ecu-menical council) put forth the decree that every altar was to contain a relic. Re-portedly, this practice continues today in both Orthodox and Catholic churches. In Christianity, relics were indeed thought

to bring about miracles. By the Middle Ages, relics were a highly prized and highly priced commodity.

A CLASS IN THEMSELVESThe Roman Catholics use a classifi ca-tion system for relics.

First Class Relics

These are either actual physical remains, such as hair or bone of a saint or martyr; or items associated with Christ such as pieces of the cross, clothing, etc.

Second Class Relics

These are items belonging to a saint such as a book, clothing, a rosary or other im-portant possession.

Third Class Relics

Commonly referred to an item that has been touched by a fi rst or second class relic; typically a small piece of cloth.

HOUSING FOR A RELICThe home of a relic is called either a sep-ulcher or a reliquary. A sepulcher is lo-cated inside the Altar of a church or cha-pel. A reliquary can be any type of vessel in which the relic can be sealed, such as a metal box, a round case on a stand or even a small case somewhat similar to a locket. Some of the reliquaries are built

in the shape of the actual relic, such as in a body part. Whatever its shape or size, the reliquary must be sealed and cannot be exposed to the public without being enclosed.

FAMOUS RELICSThe Shroud of Turin is the property of the Catholic Church and housed in the Ca-thedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, Italy. The shroud, thought to be Christ’s burial cloth, is fraught with controversy concerning its origination. This 14½ foot long, 3½ foot wide linen cloth bears the image of what is thought to be Jesus – an image of a man with wounds said to be consistent with crucifi xion. In 1988, sci-entists performed tests that indicated the shroud was made between the years 1260 and 1390, thus eliminating the possibility of being an actual shroud used by Christ. Not everyone believes these tests, as thou-sands of followers continue to undertake pilgrimages to the site.

In Naples, Italy, each year on September 19, the dried Blood of San Gennaro liq-uefi es. This miracle also takes place at various other times throughout the year. Although doubted by scientists, people believe this relic protects them from harm – with good reason. A couple times when the blood did not liquefy as anticipated, there followed the plague in 1527 and an earthquake in 1980. The town celebrates this event with a huge festival starting several days before with parades and ac-tivities including a cannoli eating contest. Now that’s Italian!

Buddha’s tooth, a left canine, is said to be the only remains from Buddha’s cre-mation even though some say his remains were divided into eight parts. Nonethe-less, there is a tooth that was thought to give the possessor the divine right to rule. The tooth is housed at the Temple of the Tooth (we didn’t make this up) in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

The Chains of St. Peter are thought to be the chains that held the Apostle Peter when jailed in Jerusalem for preaching about Jesus. The story goes that before his trial his chains were released by an angel so that he could be set free. San Pietro in Vincoli basilica in Rome now houses the chains under the main altar. The Eng-lish name of the church which was built around the relic is Saint Peter in Chains.

The Prato Cathedral in Tuscany, Italy, is the home of Mary’s Holy Belt. Appar-ently, the Virgin Mary, just before ascend-ing into heaven, left behind a green wool belt in the hands of Apostle Thomas. The Prato Cathedral built a chapel for the relic along with an exterior pulpit from which to display it fi ve times each year. Artists Michelozzo and Donatello built the pul-pit.

RELICS ON THE MARKETAccording to Canon Law (No. 1190), “it is absolutely wrong to sell relics,” a prac-tice referred to as “simony.” However, rel-ics can be purchased in order to save them from being desecrated or destroyed. Fur-thermore, relics cannot be purchased for an amount that would do more good being used elsewhere, i.e., feeding the hungry. Under no circumstances can relics be sold through a vehicle such as eBay where it can be auctioned off to the highest bid-der. Somebody forgot to tell the folks who have relics listed for auction on eBay. Some even offer free shipping!

First class relics can be obtained through the Vicariate in Rome, but only for churches and priests with proof of their status and a letter from the Bishop. A pri-vate individual cannot, however, receive a fi rst class relic from the Vicariate. There are some religious orders from which an individual can obtain a relic as well as through offi cial gift stores associated with shrines.

Second and third class relics are not un-der the same types of restrictions and can be obtained from places such as Catholic bookstores, the saint’s shrine or religious order of the saint. Donations are accepted to cover the cost of the container which houses the relic. Also, remember that a third class relic is something like a piece of cloth that has been touched to a fi rst or

second class relic such as the tomb of St. Peter. In that case, one can make their own third class relic by taking a pilgrimage to a relic site.

A LITTLE THIEVERY…AND A STRONG ECONOMY

During the Middle Ages, possessing a sanctioned relic was an important eco-nomic boost to a church and its surround-ing town. Folks would fl ock to take a look, donate money and drop a few more funds into the local economy. The abbey of Conques was on a pilgrimage route, however, had no relic to entice pilgrims to stop in 866 A.D. So, the monks engaged in an undercover operation by sending one of their fi nest to the monastery at Agen where he infi ltrated and patiently did whatever asked of him until he was as-signed the all-important job of relic care. It took 10 years, but the monk fi nally stole the relic and returned to Conques. Visitors soon fl ocked to the sight, enough so that a church had to be built to handle the fl ow. Apparently, the fact that the relic was sto-len was part of its charm.

As would be expected when something is considered to be of value, even if not monetary, relics are a target for thieves. Just this March, the heart of St. Laurence O’Toole was stolen from Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. The heart was housed in an iron cage. Nothing else was stolen at the time.

Keep checking eBay.

WEDDING ETIQUETTEPart IV

WEDDING INVITATION ETIQUETTE

Traditionally, invitations go out six to eight weeks before the wed-ding—that gives guests plenty of

time to clear their schedules and make travel arrangements if they don’t live in town. If it’s a destination wedding, give guests more time and send them out three months ahead of time. Most couples also send out save-the-date cards. They go out at six to eight months.

Make your RSVP date two to three weeks before your wedding date—this will allow enough time for you to get a fi nal head count to the caterer (one week before) and to fi nalize your seating chart. If some guests still haven’t responded by your deadline, give them a quick call and ask for their RSVPs (still via mail) so you have all their information.

Your wedding website should be in-cluded on your save-the-date. A simple “AmandaandJon.com,” is all you really need. If you’d like (or if you don’t have save-the-dates), you can include the web address in the formal invitations with an insert—a small card that informs guests they can fi nd more details online.

Including registry info on the wedding invitations or save-the-dates is still con-sidered impolite because it can come off as though you’re asking for gifts. Tell your wedding party, parents and close friends where you are registered, and let them fi ll guests in. Plus, most guests will

know that all that extra information (that they didn’t fi nd on the invitation) is on your wedding website.

If you’re having an adults-only wedding, address your invitations correctly—to each guest by name, not “and guest.” Guests should understand that the invite is meant for only those mentioned. If you fi nd that some reply with their children’s names added, give them a call and ex-plain that you’re having an adults-only wedding and that you hope they can still attend.

If you would like a particular dress code, include it in the lower right-hand cor-ner of the invite or on a reception card; “black-tie,” “cocktail attire” or “casual attire” are all acceptable.

You do not have to invite everyone as an “and guest.” If a guest isn’t married or in a serious relationship, it’s perfectly ac-ceptable to invite them solo. Most guests will understand that without “and Guest” or another name on the invitation means they aren’t invited to bring someone with them. While it’s always nice to invite ev-eryone with a guest, if you’re having a small wedding, your family and friends should understand your reasoning. If a guest RSVPs with two and were invited solo, call them and explain that you’re having an intimate wedding and, unfor-tunately, you were not able to invite ev-eryone with a guest. But if you realize that nearly everyone will be coupled up, extend a plus-one invitation to your few single friends and family.

When Ship’N Out decided to close its doors, he wanted to see the business continue in the Monument Plaza Shopping center to provide a needed service convenient to the Tri-Lakes region. He moved the Ship’N Out operation into the Liberty Tax offi ce and is continuing the quality service as

Those scenes had to be shot very quickly, though, since the horses had a tendency to lick off their colors.

WATCH FOR DAILY DEALS ON FACEBOOK

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend of mine, 46 years old, with a wife and two children, died of a stroke. I also heard he died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Are they the same? He was the picture of health and was devoted to exercise. Could his exercise be responsible? He was almost a fanatic about it. -- P.M.

ANSWER: A subarachnoid hemor-rhage is a special kind of stroke. It’s due to the bursting of an aneurysm on one of the brain arteries. Aneurysms are small, balloon-like protrusions of a brain artery. They’re weak spots. “Suba-rachnoid” indicates that the artery is be-low one of the brain’s coverings -- the arachnoid. It’s the same place where cerebrospinal fl uid circulates. A rush of a large volume of blood into this space compresses the brain and compromises its function. The increased pressure on the brain adds to the threat of death.

Sometimes these weak bulges have been there from birth. In most instances, they arise during life. High blood pressure, smoking and excessive intake of alcohol contribute to their development. From 10 million to 15 million Americans have a cerebral aneurysm. Only a small per-centage of these people die from it.

At the onset of bleeding, the involved person complains of a terrible headache, the worst he or she has ever had. The person then becomes unresponsive and slips into a coma. This sort of stroke has a high fatality rate, around 50 percent.

Answering your question about your friend’s devotion to exercise and its in-fl uence on his death is hard. Exercise

did not cause the aneurysm to form. In unusual circumstances, it might have caused the aneu-rysm to break. Straining to lift a very heavy load while simultane-ously holding the breath has been described as a possible reason for rupture of this kind of artery problem.

The booklet on strokes describes the more common stroke causes and their treatment. People can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s print-ed name and address. Please al-

low four weeks for delivery.***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Recently a friend passed away from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The total course of the disease took about 10 weeks, although some recall subtle changes earlier. This has been described as human mad cow disease, or very rapid Alzheimer’s. What can you tell us about it? -- T.H.

ANSWER: It’s an infection due to a new kind of germ, one that is totally pro-tein. No other living thing, if this truly is living, is composed only of protein. The germ is called a prion. When it fi nds its way into the brain, it causes a rapidly progressive and profound dementia. The prion might have been there for de-cades, however, before signs appear.

It is a truly rare disease that occurs in all parts of the world. Most of the time, it is fatal in a short time, about one year. No medicine stops its progress or improves its symptoms. Transmission of CJ dis-ease to family members living under the same roof as the patient has not been described.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will in-corporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or re-quest an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Now Consumers Union, the group that brings us Consumer Reports magazine, is asking for stricter over-sight of reverse mortgages. While reverse mortgages can be a lifesaver in certain situations, for most senior homeowners that particular route is full of potential danger.

Mortgage origination costs can be as-tronomical, draining away the equity. Scammers tie home-equity mortgag-es to other fi nancial products. And, it learned, homeowners were found in default if they failed to pay property taxes or homeowners insurance.

The biggest concern, however, is if only one spouse’s name is on the paperwork. You can’t take a reverse mortgage unless you’re age 62. If only one spouse is that age, then only that person’s name goes on the paper-work. If that older spouse dies, the younger spouse can be evicted from the home if he or she can’t come up with all the money to immediately pay off the mortgage.

Consumers Union is asking for a number of safeguards:

• Ensure that the loan is suitable for borrowers and won’t put them at risk.

• Establish a fi duciary responsibility to act in the best interest of the hom-eowner.

• Outlaw deceptive marketing.

• Prohibit mingling a reverse mort-gage with other fi nancial products.

• Strengthen the pre-mortgage coun-

seling that homeowners are required to have.• And the big one: protect the non-borrowing spouse.TIP: Did you know you can get an online subscription to Consumer Re-ports? It’s much handier than trying to store back copies of the magazine. Visit consumerreports.org to decide if you’re interested. Call 1-800-333-0663 to subscribe instead of putting your credit-card number online.

OBJECT!DESSENT! PROTEST!By the very reasonable,Nicholas James Yanez

By now, I’m sure you’ve all heard of the 5th Annual Car Show at Rodz Bar this

weekend (Located at Pinz Bowling Center). What you probably don’t know, is the conspiracy to keep this humble correspondent out of the competition. I am the proud owner of a 1993 Subaru Impreza; that’s the silver edition. And while my car is tainted with rust and wear and tear, it’s still a beautiful vehicle on the in-side. Beauty is not skin deep folks. But will my car be welcomed at this weekends car show? No it will not. I feel intimidated by the superiors to not bring my car. Apparently this competition is for “nice cars”. Who’s to say my car is mean? It’s never done any intentional harm to another vehicle.

The show takes place this Saturday, July 28th from 11am-3pm. What I am suggesti- mhm –demanding we do, is protest this audacious event.

Why is it that an old beat up ’93 Subaru can not drive away from this car show victorious? Exactly, there is no reason. So you will join me now. I’ll bring the signs and pickets. I’ll bring the beverages. I’ll bring the message; which is that no car should feel intimidated to join such an event. And sure they’ll be awesome things such as giveaways, drink specials, a DJ, Live Mu-sic, and the all-important Burnout Competition. Yeah, you heard me, a BURNOUT competition; how bar-baric. What kind of people want to sit around a bar getting incredible drink specials watching different high-powered sports cars spinning their tires in a Smokey glory?

Join me men, women, and children of the tri-lakes area. Bring your family, friends, and lovers. Bring your attitude and your swagger. This car show (located at 855 HWY 105, Palmer Lake, CO) on July 28th

is going down. Be there for the fall; for the everlasting memory of the time we took them down. It will be quite a day people, quite a hand-some day.

For more information on this of-fensive occasion call Pinz Bowling Center (719) 487-7469

“Silent House” (R) -- What could be a more boring, safe, non-terrorizing experi-ence than cleaning out an old lake house? How about a lake house that hasn’t been used in years, and has had every possible entry and exit nailed shut? This remake of a low-budget fl ick from Argentina puts Sarah (the ascending Elizabeth Olsen) in just such a creaky old home, trapped, in the dark, all alone except for the shadowy fi g-ures lurking just out of sight.

The whole movie is in real-time, seemingly done in a single shot that follows Sarah. No convenient intermissions, no scene transi-tions or alternate locations, just the audi-ence trapped along with the victim. Those aching for terror and suspense can rent a room down at Silent House, where you can’t scream or the bad people will fi nd you.

“The Deep Blue Sea” (R) -- This tragic and romantic fi lm tells the story of Hester (Rachel Weisz), a woman trapped in a loveless marriage and powerless to stop her passionate romance with another man. All beautifully shot in the rich tones of post-war London, the movie hands Weisz a serious role, and she hands back a serious performance.Hester’s husband is a stuffy, wealthy old judge who supplies her with a life in the upper-crust, and not much else. Hester’s

other man is Freddie (Tom Hiddleston, Loki from “The Avengers”), a veteran pi-lot from the war now looking for work. You may not like Hester, but you will feel something for her as she swims in a sea of passion and confl ict.

“Jiro Dreams of Sushi” (PG) -- You don’t have to be a fan of sushi to get the appeal of this unique documentary. Jiro Ono is re-vered as the best sushi chef in the world, and a national treasure to the Japanese. He also works in a tiny restaurant in a subway station where people make reservations months in advance to see the master at work. The fi lm is an engaging portrait of a modern ascetic, somebody who’s dedi-cated to a singular craft. It also shows the complicated relationship between the 85-year-old Jiro and his oldest son, Yoshikazu, who is expected to fi ll his father’s shoes one day.

“My Way” (R) -- This war epic from Korea follows two young men from their rivalry as marathon runners to the battlefi elds of Mongolia and all the way to beaches of Normandy. One is a native-born Korean, the other is part of the Japanese occupa-tion. When World War II swallows them both, they seem bound together as they go from soldiers, to prisoners to conscripts.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re wise to let your Arian skepticism question a for-mer adversary’s request to let bygones be by-gones. Time will tell if he or she is trying to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Congratu-lations. Your hard work soon pays off with some well-deserved recognition. Meanwhile, that important personal relationship needs more attention from you.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) That new per-son in your life seems trustworthy, but don’t turn him or her into a confi dant just yet. Re-member: The secret you don’t reveal is the one you won’t lose sleep over.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your kindness makes a difference in someone’s life. But by week’s end, a touch of Cancerian envy could create a problem with a colleague. Take care to keep it under control.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new spurt of energy sends you roaring back into that chal-lenging work situation. But be careful not to overdo it, or your sizzle could fi zzle before your task is completed.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your practical sense helps you see the logic of be-ing a bit more fl exible with a workplace col-league. But you still have a ways to go before there’s a true meeting of the minds.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sur-prise situation could cause you to spend more money than you feel you can afford. But care-ful budget adjustments will help. Your fi scal picture soon brightens.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That decision you made might still have its detractors, but your supporters are growing. Meanwhile, your personal life takes on some welcome new developments.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) Matters of the mind intrigue the sage Sagittarian through week’s end. By then, you should feel more than ready to make room for pursuits of the heart.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The canny Capricorn can offer good counsel to others. But how about taking some advice yourself from a close friend or family mem-ber who is able and ready to help?

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new workplace opportunity offers a variety of challenges that you might fi nd intriguing. Best advice: Take things one step at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A bid to revive a relationship that ended on a bitter note needs to be carefully thought out before you can even begin to consider plunging into a new emotional commitment.

BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy being with people, and people love being with you. You would probably do very well in politics.

Plus you can makeyour teeth whiter. Then choosebetween 28 different blush col-ors….and add a beauty mark ifyou wish. Then last but not leastadd Headwear, Hair Clips, neck-laces, Earrings, Eyeglasses,Sunglasses or Tattoos.

Another popular website to useto try on new looks iswww.marieclaire.com Theyhave a Virtual Hair Salon underthe Hair and Beauty Tab. Theyalso have a Virtual Body make-over under the Health and fitnesstab. Scan in a photo of yourselfand see what you would look likeafter losing 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40pounds! Print the photo out andput it on your Fridge. You'll thinktwice before reaching in there forsomething unhealthy!

Before you begin:Take a clear photo of your face.If you have long hair, put it in aponytail. If you have bangs, clipthem away from your face. Thephoto should show your face, and only your face (and maybe alittle of your neck and shoulders).Apply your makeup as you nor-mally would (unless you're inter-ested in applying virtual lip glossand mascara, which is also anoption).

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

A PLACETO STARTFrom a fi nancial stand point,

the starting point is a personal balance sheet. In its simplest

form a balance sheet lists all that you have, your assets, and from that is subtracted all that you owe - your liabilities. The resulting number is your net worth.

A strong balance sheet will have as-sets that are appreciating in value, low debt and a net worth that has been increasing over time. A weak balance sheet may very well be made up of assets that have high price tags and low resale value. The liabilities will be high, especially consumer and credit card debt. The resulting net worth will be low and over time getting lower.

Strong or weak, your personal bal-ance sheet is a snap shot of the re-sults of your fi nancial choices. More

importantly, I believe it is a refl ection of how we have chosen to use the blessings God has bestowed upon us. In this materialistic time, it is very easy to fi nd oneself trapped in con-sumerism and forgetting what is truly important, being a good steward of God’s gifts.

So how do we strengthen our balance sheets? There are a number of things that you can do to improve your fi -nancial position.

First, do all that you can do to protect your income. A cash fl ow is critical for fi nancial success.

Next, build an emergency fund. A good rule of thumb is to have three to six months of living expenses set aside in a safe liquid investment for emergencies.

Third, review your lifestyle. How are you spending your money? Are there expenses that could be limited or even eliminated? If so make the change and invest the difference.

Finally, develop a systematic plan

for paying down your consumer and credit card debt. Be as aggressive as you can at eliminating high interest debt, but not at the expense of your emergency fund or long term invest-ments.

When used consistently, these steps will strengthen your fi nancial posi-tion as well as your emotional well-being. Remember that fi nancial suc-cess is not about how much you have, it’s about how well you manage the blessings God has bestowed.

“Precious treasures remain in the house of the wise, but the fool con-sumes it.” Proverbs 21:20
