We humans love penguins. There’s some-thing endearing about those little waddling tuxedos with sweet, gentle personalities.

There are between 16 and 19 species of penguins depending on who is classifying them. Other than those found in captivity, most of the world’s penguins are located in the southern hemisphere, especially Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands near South America. They can also be found near New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

water. They are able to swim up to speeds of about 20 miles per hour. Their wings are really strong fl ippers that propel them through the water as if fl ying. Their food is all under water as well. They are carnivores and consume fi sh, krill, shrimp and other crustaceans. They see better under water rather than outside of the water, making hunting for prey much easier.

THE BIRDS AND THE BEESOF PENGUIN LIFE

Penguins are monogamous, having one mate for life. The Emperor and King pen-guins lay one egg; other species lay two. The father penguin incubates the egg for 8-10 weeks on his feet in a pouch while mom goes to sea to eat and build up fat stores. Once the egg hatches, the mother returns and the father takes his turn at heading out to sea to replenish his body weight after losing about half of it during incubation. Penguins hang out in a colony of sorts and typically stay in one area all their lives, although most of the species do migrate. These colonies can house millions of penguins. They are “social butterfl ies.” They make distinctive sounds to identify their mates and offspring while in these colonies of thousands.

NOT EVERYONE SAYS AWWWWPenguins live to be 15-20 years old but

have many natural predators. In the water, they are dinner for leopard seals, sharks, sea lions and orcas. Out of the water it’s snakes and foxes. They also fall prey to other threats such as oil spills, illegal poaching and egg harvesting, as well as global warming which changes their envi-ronment and ability to hunt for food.

TEMPERATURE EXTREMESDifferent species of penguins thrive well in the cold, some in the heat. You’ve prob-ably seen the fi lms that show thousands of penguins huddling. They are warm-blood-ed birds with a body temperature of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. They have a layer of fat or “blubber” under the skin to help insulate them, as well as down-like feath-ers. Over those feathers, they have another layer of feathers for insulation. They have a gland that produces oil that they spread over their feathers to aid in maintaining body temperature. In contrast, species of penguins living in the Galapagos islands are less likely to be found huddled togeth-er, but rather spreading their wings to stay cool.

NOT ALL PENGUINSARE ALIKE

There are six different genera of penguin species all with distinct differences.

• The genus Aptenodytes consists of the Emperor and King penguins only. These birds are quite different from other spe-cies, most notably in size. An Emperor can weigh up to 90 pounds. This is the species that only lays one egg at a time, carries it in a pouch and does not nest. These birds have colorful plumage and are known to be deep divers.

• The Eudyptes genus includes four spe-

cies: Erect-crested penguin, Macaroni pen-guin, Rockhopper penguin and Snares pen-guin. These penguins are also quite color-ful. Some have red bills and yellow feather plumes; the Macaroni has orange plumes. These birds lay two eggs, but only raise one offspring – the one hatched from the second egg. The second egg is the largest and hatches fi rst. This genus nests, some in the rocks, small caves or crevices; the Snares penguin prefers a forested area.

• The Eudyptula genus includes only one species - the Little penguin, also known as Little Blue, Blue and Fairy penguin. These are the smallest penguins, weighing only about 2 pounds. They do not have colorful plumes as many of the other species, but are more gray-blue in color. They are also the only nocturnal penguin. These birds are less likely to be found in the larger colo-nies. These guys also eat smaller sea life, such as sardines and anchovies.

• Like the Eudyptula genus, the Mega-dyptes contains only one species, the Yel-low-eyed penguin. These birds can usually be found in southern New Zealand. They also tend to stay in smaller groups rather than the larger colonies. Their nests also tend to be separate from their neighbors. Their look is similar to the crested birds, but with yellow eyes; hence their name.

• The most common genus is the Pygosce-lis. These are the classic black and white penguins that we see at zoos and aquariums in the U.S. This genus includes the Gentoo penguins, Chinstrap penguins and Adelie penguins. The Gentoos do not migrate and stay close to home for breeding season.

• The Spheniscus Genus has 4 species – the African, Galapagos, Humboldt and Magel-lanic. The African penguin is the only pen-

guin that breeds in Africa. It’s existence has been threatened by oil spills. The Galapa-gos penguin breeds the closest to the equa-tor and its population has been threatened by El Nino weather events. The Humboldt prefers the hot desert climate or the heat of the Mediterranean. The Magellanic breed on the opposite side of the Atlantic as the African penguins.

CAN’T GETENOUGH PENGUINS?

Learning more about penguins is easy. There are some good fi lms and documen-taries easily attainable. One of the better known is “March of the Penguins” (2005) narrated by Morgan Freeman. This docu-mentary follows the life of the Emperor penguins in particular.

Our love of the penguin is obvious withthe plethora of fi lms either about penguins or featuring penguin characters. The short list:

• “Madagascar” (2005), a Dreamworks ani-mation fi lm, is arguably the most popular movie that includes both penguins and hu-mans. The penguins stole the show, but the producers have been laughing all the way to the bank. The movie grossed about $533 million. It also spawned a Nickelodeon ani-mated television series, airing 122 episodes since 2008. The show is still going strong.

• “Happy Feet” (2006) was also a suc-cessful animated fi lm featuring penguins, grossing over $284 million. This fi lm fea-tures singing Emperor penguins with one outcast who can’t hold a tune but can dance well enough to go on “Dancing With The Stars.”

• More recently, in 2011, “Mr. Popper’s Pen-guins” was released, starring Jim Carrey as a regular guy who inherits six penguins and manages to keep them in his house. This penguin fl ick grossed only just over $187 million at the box offi ce. Maybe it needed less Jim Carrey and more penguins?

Some things in life have become much easier or convenient due to technology. Through the use of

cellular phones, we are always able to at-tempt to call someone on the go or have a handy dandy fl ashlight using the fl ash-light application. Through the use of the Internet, we can easily research something on a moment’s notice and 24 hours a day. Through the use of digital music, we can listen to new songs immediately without traveling to a store. But is all technology benefi cial to us?

Currently, there are two major biotech companies. One of those companies is the largest and most profi table. It uses tech-nology to change or adapt our food. The company’s promise is that the technology will be used to feed the world and make agriculture more convenient. That conve-nience comes in being able to spray crops with an abundance of weed killer without killing the crop. It also makes the crops aluminum resistant.

Scientists of biotech companies are work-ing on combining genes from one species to another species for the sake of conve-nience. For example, some scientists are combining genes of a rat with the genes of lettuce and the genes of a toad with the genes of a potato. Sounds a bit Sci-Fi, but then, 50 years ago, cellular phones and digital tablets that we currently use seemed Sci-Fi.

More commonly, soybeans are genetical-ly modifi ed to resist weed killer. That al-lows the farmer to heavily spray the soy-bean crops. Approximately, 90% of our soybeans are genetically modifi ed (GM), 85% of our corn is GM, 70% of our wheat and cotton are GM. By changing the ge-netics of the foods, what does it do to hu-man’s genetic structure over a period of time? It begins to alter it and the human body collects and reacts to the toxins.

OTHER“FAMOUS” PENGUINS

Remember the singing group “The Pen-guins?” They were an R&B, doo-wop group from the 1950s and 1960s. Their big-gest success was their 1954 release “Earth Angel” which was the fi rst song from the R&B genre to cross over to pop. They named themselves The Penguins because they thought they were cool – an important distinction of the day.

A group called the “Penguin Artists” from City of Moonee Valley in Victoria, Austra-lia is a group of artists who have formed to provide opportunities for people with psy-chiatric disabilities to assist them in devel-oping their artistic talents and promoting their work.

It should be no surprise that there is a town called Penguin. It’s located on the coast of northern Tasmania. The coastline attracts a population of Fairy penguins, which at-tracts a large tourist population during the breeding months between November and March.

Word of mouth has always been a powerful tool; from the days of Paul Revere riding and

warning, to how facebook built an online empire, people talk. Of course everyone has gotten angry at a chatty Kathy once or twice, but if you can fi nd a way to take advantage of those who speak exces-sively, it can really work to your benefi t. That’s why, if you’ve fl ipped through the paper lately, you’ve probably seen at least something about Pinz’ Community Day. It’s this whole big celebration we’re throwing as celebration of the Tri-Lakes area. It takes place on the fi rst Saturday of every summer month (May, June, July, and August).

The fi rst one happens to be this Satur-day, May 5th. The specials may be mind blowing, so hold onto your skull. There will be (drum roll)… FREE BOWLING! From 12pm-3pm Pinz will offer up to two games per person of free bowling. Other events include a Car Bash and Garden Tractor Pull (to help benefi t the Palmer Lake Fireworks Committee), Live Music

in Rodz, Color Pin Bowling in the eve-ning, Competitions, and Giveaways! The best part is that Local non-profi ts, chari-ties, school groups, and other organiza-tions will reap the benefi ts of the day. Groups are welcome to hold fundraiser, set up a booth, have a bake sale, or just hand out information free of charge. It’s the best way to gain awareness for your organization, while everyone has a great time.

So get talking folks. We need the word heard in the west and east, up top and down low. If there was ever a time to gos-sip and spill out whatever pops in your head, now is the time. Of course since I’m telling you this, will it make you not want to talk? After all, it seems you talkers only tell the world about things you’re supposed to keep quiet. It makes me really rethink this entire article. Tell you what, this Community Day thing, the one that takes place this Saturday, May 5th; the all day, 12pm-12am specta-cle, that will benefi t the entire Tri-Lakes area - Don’t tell a soul. Let’s call it our little secret.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 25. I have a serious case of GERD. I’ve been put on four different medicines. They aren’t working.I also have palpitations throughout the day. I’ve been told by doctors and nurses that there is nothing dangerous about them. I’d like to know if this true. -- J.C.

ANSWER: GERD -- gastroesophageal refl ux disorder -- is heartburn. It’s the upward spurting of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the swallowing tube, a place that is not able to cope with these corrosive juices the way the stomach is. Eliminate or go easy on foods that make GERD worse: citrus fruits; tomatoes; onions; carbonated drinks; spicy, fatty or fried foods; chocolate; peppermint; and caffeine. If you’re overweight, weight loss lessens GERD symptoms. Don’t lie down after eating. Don’t smoke. Sleep with your head, chest and stomach on a slope by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. That position keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Don’t wear anything that con-stricts your stomach, like tight pants or tight belts.Medicines called “proton pump inhibi-tors” nearly completely turn off acid production. Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Aciphex and Dexilant are their names. If you still have heartburn while on these medicines, it’s OK to use an antacid along with them.If medicines fail, other causes of heart-burn need consideration, things like bile refl ux or eosinophilic esophagitis. If these conditions aren’t found, then

surgical treatment of GERD is an option that’s open to you. Palpitations mean a thumping or racing heart. They can be felt as a thud in the chest. The cause is an extra beat -- or more correctly, a premature beat -- one that comes before it should. The beat after a premature beat is delayed. Dur-ing the delay, the heart fi lls with more blood than usual, and that causes a thump in the chest when the heart empties. Premature beats are almost always innocent and need no treatment. ANSWER: I can tell you only a little, because only a little is known about it. It’s a lung injury that comes on sud-denly, with damage to the lung air sacs (the alveoli) and the spaces between the air sacs, the interstitium. The cause is unknown. Because of such destruc-tion, oxygen cannot get into the blood. Patients are severely short of breath, have a fever and they cough. The only medicines are ones to keep the person going as best as possible. There is no cure medicine. Even with a ventilator, death happens to more than 60 percent of these patients.It’s an illness that reminds doctors that they don’t have an answer for every malady. • On May 6, 1911, George Maledon, the man who executed at least 60 men for “Hanging Judge” Isaac Parker, dies of natural causes in Tennessee. Paid $100 for each hanging, he tried to be a conscientious hangman who minimized suffering with a quick death. Maledon considered the job “honorable and respectable work.”

• On April 30, 1927, the Federal Industrial Institution for Women, the fi rst women’s federal prison, opens in Alderson, W.Va. All women serving federal sentences of more than a year were to be brought there, with the vast majority imprisoned for drug and alcohol charges imposed during the Prohibition era.

• On May 1, 1931, President Herbert Hoover offi cially dedicates New York City’s Empire State Building. The entire 102-story building went up in just over a year, under budget (at $40 million) and well ahead of schedule. During certain pe-riods of building, the frame grew an aston-ishing four-and-a-half stories a week.

• On May 5, 1945, in Lakeview, Ore., six people are killed while attempting to drag a Japanese balloon out of the woods. The explosive balloon was one of a handful of Japanese attacks against the continental United States, which were conducted by Japanese submarines and later by high-altitude balloons carrying explosives or incendiaries.

• On May 3, 1952, a ski-modifi ed U.S. Air Force C-47 becomes the fi rst aircraft to land on the North Pole. On the fl ight was Dr. Albert P. Crary, a scientist who in 1961 traveled to the South Pole by motorized ve-hicle, becoming the fi rst person in history to have stood on both poles.

• On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfi elder Willie Mays hits his 512th ca-reer home run to break Mel Ott’s National League record. Mays would fi nish his ca-reer with 660 home runs, good for third on the all-time list at the time of his retire-ment.

• On May 2, 1972, Steven Spielberg begins fi lming “Jaws.” The production, which used three mechanical sharks to great ef-fect, enthralled audiences and grossed $458 million in its theatrical release.

Just a handful of almonds a day could help maintain healthy cholesterol lev-els. That’s good news for just about ev-eryone, as cardiovascular disease holds its spot as the leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S. Re-search shows that a diet high in heart-healthy foods like almonds can reduce cholesterol levels as much as statin drugs like lovastatin and mevastatin.

Almonds also are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, a powerful anti-oxidant that helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. A study pub-lished in the June 2005 Journal of Nu-trition showed that consuming whole almonds, including the skin, doubles the antioxidant intake.

Just 1 ounce (22 almonds) packs more protein than an egg and more than 3 grams of dietary fi ber. This same por-tion of almonds provides about 160 calories and the high protein content staves off hunger. Almonds also are a rich source of ribofl avin, magnesium, manganese and copper.

Shelled almonds may be whole, sliced or slivered with skin on, or blanched with the skin removed. Look for dry-roasted almonds that contain no addi-tional ingredients like sugar or preser-vatives. Store them in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place to prevent them from going rancid and absorbing odors of other foods. Almonds will last several months in the refrigerator and

up to a year frozen.

This heart-healthy recipe for Savory Almond and Cheese Straws makes an excellent snack and is a great way to incorporate almonds into your diet.

SAVORY ALMONDAND CHEESE STRAWS

1 pound puff pastry dough1 egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water3/4 cup grated dry cheese, such as Par-mesan or aged Gouda3/4 cup almonds, choppedFlour for dusting

1. Thaw pastry overnight in refrig-erator or 40 minutes at room tempera-ture. Unfold pastry sheets on a lightly fl oured surface. With the shorter side facing you, roll out each sheet to 12 by 12 inches. Cut each sheet in half, lengthwise.

2. Brush dough with egg mix and sprinkle with an even coating of cheese and almonds. With a rolling pin, light-ly press the mixture into the dough. Cut each half crosswise into 3/4-inch strips. Place on parchment-lined bak-ing sheets and refrigerate for 30 min-utes before baking.

3. Bake at 400 F, 9 to 10 minutes, or until light brown and crisp. Makes about 96 straws.

do that move where she strangles a hitman with her legs while twisting his arm.“Kinyarwanda” -- In this drama, different stories are woven together to give a mul-tidimensional perspective on the massacre in Rwanda in 1994. The characters include a young couple and their son -- all three are in danger because the parents are from different ethnic groups. This, however, isn’t a story about survival, but of the is-sues involved before, during and after the genocide.

DOG OF THE WEEK“New Year’s Eve” (PG-13) -- What hap-pens when you pack as many stars as you can fi t into a romantic comedy set around one day? An unlovable lump of cameos and an annoying ad campaign where it’s obvious that many of the stars couldn’t be paid to do a promo shot. This movie is the

toxic runoff created by overpressured me-diocrity. It’s the fruitcake of fi lm; a dense, unwanted amalgamation of unused tidbits that forces its way into our lives around the holidays.It stars Hilary Swank, Robert De Niro and a ton of other people who don’t mind being left off the list. Each cluster of stars forms its own little love story that is somehow vaguely connected to the other vignettes. In the end, all the half-baked stories come to a big undeserved climax that unconvinc-ingly demands that you experience tender emotions.
