Daffodil Day

A Coffee morning will be held at Sneem House on Friday 8th March f rom 10.30am to 1pm to raise funds for Daffodil Day. There will be coffee, cakes, chat and a great raff le for a good cause. All welcome.

Sneem Bord ná nÓg Sneem Bord ná nÓg AGM will be held on Wednesday 20th February at 8pm in Sneem House. All parents are asked to attend. The Bord na nÓg Fundraiser, the Golfball Barrel Challenge which took place on Sunday 13th January, was won by Ciaran McDermot f rom Rossdohan. The prize was lunch for two in Parknasilla. Second prize of lunch for two in Sneem Hotel went to Martina Cremin, Blackwater. There were 384 balls in the barrel. €500 was raised. The committee would like to thank everyone for their sup-port.

Sneem Rowing Club

Sneem Rowing Club AGM will be held on Saturday 23rd February at 8.30pm in our Boathouse. All members and anyone interested in rowing or helping out for the season ahead are invited to attend. Congratulations to Marie and John Galvin, Castlecove, who won €112 in our 50/50 draw. Thanks to everyone for your continued support. Sneem Resource Centre Calendar 2020

Thanks to everyone for sending in your stunning wintery shots! Our judges had a hard time deciding which ones to use for our calendar. Stephanie Burns sent us an atmospheric photo of the sun setting behind St. Michael's Church which we will put on the January page. Ester Noordkamp Bultman took a beautiful shot of our snow-covered village and mountains in the background. Her picture will appear on the December page. Now it is time to get snapping thinking of Sneem in early/mid spring. We will be looking for photographs for the February and March pages. Please remember: The photos need to be Sneem related and the format needs to be in landscape mode. Looking forward to seeing your works of art! Sneem Men’s Shed

The Shed meets twice a week at the Old Ballroom (now the Digital Hub) on Monday and Thursday nights. New members are welcome and if interested, call by for a chat and a cup of tea. Coffee, Craft and Chat The weekly Coffee, Craf t and Chat Group that takes place every Tuesday in the Resource Centre f rom 11am to 1pm are continuing the charity knit and crochet on each Tuesday through February and possibly beyond that. The sessions continue to 2pm and people can dip in and out as they wish. Great progress is being made with the Twiddle Mitts, shawls, bags and aprons for Alzheimer pa-tients. We got the opportunity of an interview with Bobby Kerr on the Down To Busi-ness show on Newstalk Radio last Saturday. There are f ree smoke alarms available for senior citizens. There are also f ree hi-viz jackets for everyone and these can be collected f rom the Resource Cen-tre or Sneem Post Off ice. Sneem Housing Committee has been raising the issue of lack of social housing and rental properties in Sneem over the last number of issues with little success. The reality of the situation is that Sneem families are now being offered social housing in Kenmare and this would be disastrous for our small community, gravely impacting on our crèche, school and other services. Please support the efforts of the housing committee by lobbying our local councillors. If any of your f riends or relations have an empty house in Sneem, you might draw their atten-tion to this serious issue. From the Quay Road it will make its way past Mace to Sneem Phar-macy, turning lef t and passing Murphy’s Bar up to the bridge, following up Bridge Street to f inish at Stone House Corner. This is a person or persons who helps the village in any way and does this on a Voluntary basis and needs rewarding. Visits

We had a very productive visit f rom Niamh Ní Dhuill f rom Natural Kitchen Gar-dens on Friday 25th January funded by the Biodiversity Officer f rom Kerry County Council. In 2 hours she made a tour of the village and gave us some practical suggestions on how to proceed with areas such as planting around the Digital Hub, accessing the Heritage in Schools scheme, ideas for the va-cant f ield behind the f ire station in Seaview, the area behind the tennis court, the f ield beside the Church carpark and the Garden of the Senses. On Tues-day 5th February, some of our working group travelled to Killarney to see Kil-cummin Biodiversity Park and we met with Ian McGrigor who was involved in this and other community projects. Community Support Fund

Sneem TidyTowns has submitted two applications for funding f rom the Kerry County Council’s Community Support Fund: one for 2 colourful new benches for Sneem Playground and the other to revise and update our Biodiversity Ac-tion Plan as advised in last year’s Adjudication Report. This will also involve some training in its practical application such as planting and plant and insect survey techniques.

Leader Funding

We have also submitted the f irst of our applications for Leader funding under the Biodiversity category. We are ap-plying for a Sneem Biodiversity Feasibil-ity Study to be carried out by Ian McGri-gor f rom Gortbrack Organic Farm. The aim of this study will be to produce a whole village plan for increasing the biodiversity of the village. The next deadline for Leader funding applications is the end of February. We are working on making applications for signage and branding our village and for introducing drinking fountains back into the village. Sneem Streets and Lanes Naming Project As part of the Heritage section of the TidyTowns Competition, we would like to bring back the old names of the streets and back lanes of Sneem. If anyone knows what the back lanes were called and stories behind these names, please let us know. Reducing Plastic Waste

We are encouraging businesses to sign up to the Conscious Cup Campaign and Refill Ireland. The Conscious Cup Campaign aims to reduce and eventual-ly eliminate single use cups in Ireland . Ref ill Ireland is a voluntary environmental project leading the way to make Ireland a tap water ref illing country once again It maps all the f ree drinking water taps throughout the country, see www.ref ill.ie. Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) Update

We are planning to get a spokesperson f rom another successful SEC to address our group. Keep an eye on our Facebook page/Sneem Tidytowns for updates. Site Specific Sculpture Trail A temporary site-specif ic sculpture trail is proposed, whereby about ten individu-al artists or entities will each install a sculpture as a response to the environment along the River Walks. If you would like to participate, please present your envi-ronmentally f riendly idea or design at Sneem Resource Centre by 20th March for Tidy Towns Working Group approval. On the 26th of January the Order of Malta came to Sneem for the day to train all our Cub Scouts and Scouts in First Aid as well as providing certif ied training to some of our Scout leaders and a number of other people in the village. Based on this training and some practical exercises we will be running over the next few weeks we hope to be able to award all the Cubs and Scouts with a level 3 emer-gency badge. To give an idea of what the Scouts needed to learn to achieve this are the following: Stage 1 Badge Requirements: I know what should be in my personal first aid k it I know the basic rules of first aid I know the different emergency services that are avail-able and how and when to call them I know how to treat minor cuts Stage 2 Badge Requirements: I know how and when to place someone into the recov-ery (safe airway) position I know the importance of providing shelter and insula-tion I know how to keep myself safe in an emergency I can direct help/rescue services to a location Stage 3 Badge Requirements: I know how to deal with a bleeding injury and nose bleeds I know how to treat minor burns and sunburn I know the international distress signal and when to use it I can treat bee stings and nettle stings I know how to check for the A B C of basic First Aid I know how to use CPR I can assess an emergency situation quick ly, and sum-mon help I know how to create an escape plan for a building or activity location in case of fire I know how to care for an injured person until help ar-rives Many thanks to the Order of Malta for carrying out the training which was great fun and also helped the Scouts learn lots of useful skills. Could Sneem become “The Story Village”

November 2018 marked the seventh Sneem Storytelling Festival and it is generally accepted that it also was the most successful. It took a number of years for the festival to establish strong credibility within our community, and this is of utmost importance if the festival is to survive. Last year saw the largest number of attendees which included 200 scouts f rom all over Kerry. Sneem is now the one village in Kerry most closely associated with Storytelling. On the cul-tural f ront, it helps to revitalise the storytelling tradition which was a vital part of the fabric of life of our ancestors. It bright-ens up an otherwise dull and dreary time in the depths of Winter. It generates income for those involved in tourism related business and, thereby, extends the tourist season. It provides very good publicity for Sneem, which could result in attracting people here at other times of the year and helps to develop communi-ty spirit because it calls on voluntary support to run the many and varied events. Ciarraí Scéalach / Storied Kerry

Ciarraí Scéalach / Storied Kerry is a new voluntary organi-sation of people with members f rom eight regions of the county who are committed to fostering the unique story tra-dition of each district. The word ‘Story’ is interpreted in its broadest meaning and covers legend, landscape, flora, fau-na, archaeology, geology, folklore, sport and history as well as fostering the art of storytelling, both ancient and contem-porary, among people who are interested or whose interest can be sparked, and especially the young. Over the years, many books, CD’s and folklore manuscripts about these

districts have been produced but, unfortunately, in many cases, many are not readily accessible to the general public. It is now proposed to have an extra room devoted to Story in a number of Kerry libraries, although many communi-ties do not have a permanent library. Storied Kerry is making a case to many organisations, including Government, that each of Kerry’s eight participating districts could be designated as ‘Story Villages’, each with a Story House which should be established as a key asset in the social, cultural and economic revival of each area. The National Folklore Department in UCD, The Cork Folklore Pro-ject, Tralee ITT, Kerry County Library, UCC, and Siamsa are also among the organisations which have promised support. Story House can be a focal point for the Story Village where locals can be imbued with the story of their area, a venue for storytelling workshops, lectures and storytelling performances all year round and a story-themed interpretive centre for tourists who wish to know more about the area. What is the relevance for Sneem?

The above proposals are very new and will involve a pilot Story House project in one of Kerry’s eight districts. Gneeveguilla, Bonane and Scartaglin are al-ready active. Sneem holds an advantage because of the publicity garnered f rom successful festivals. However, just running a festival once a year would not be suff icient to merit the title “Story Village”.

A major conference on Storytelling took place in Killarney last October and was attended by 120 people including the committee of the Sneem Storytelling Festi-val. One of Sneem’s youngest tellers Sive O’Leary gave a short performance. Representatives of each of Kerry’s eight districts were asked to go back to their areas and, if interested, to outline plans for the coming year. The committee of the Sneem Storytelling & Folklore Festival is anxious to hear the views of any interested people in the locality as to how we might take active steps to make Sneem a genuine Story Village. 10th February 2019: Coomakista / Hogs Head Walk (Heading towards the Hogs Head Golf Club at Waterville). This is a 3.5 to 5 hour walk of moderate to diff icult intensity. Route dependent on weather on the day. 24th February 2019: Glorach Loop Walk (Part of the Kerry Way). Thi s i s also a 3.5 to 5 hour walk of moderate to diff icult intensity. 24th February 2019: General invitation to participate in an easier walk w ith Sneem Walking Club. The walk is f rom Tahilla Church back to Sneem on the Kerry Way; approximately 2 hours on easy terrain. Start time will be 10am out-side Dan Murphy’s pub, where the more difficult walk already advertised will also commence. Credit Union Quiz

St Michael’s N.S was delighted to be able to enter two teams in the Credit Union Quiz Competition recently. Our two teams took part in the U13 and U11 catego-ries. Both our teams prepared well in advance and achieved excellent scores on the day. See pictures on page 10. VEX Robotics

Stuart our Vex Robot pictured lef t is alive and well and despite a few glitches with programming he now moves by himself and can be moved by a controller on his f ield! IT Tralee presented the senior room with a Vex Field 4ft x 8f t course and one thou-sand pieces to create a robot! The senior room designed, built and programmed Stuart our robot and also built his f ield, pic-tured below. Stuart has to be able to move on his own, move hubs around his f ield and carry out controlled instructions. Stu-

art’s programme took 3 weeks to code including the autonomous programme and the driving programme. All pupils in the senior room were then tested to see who would be the best driver for entering an International Compe-tition of Vex Robotics in IT Tralee in March! Well done to Mr Hussey and all in the senior room for their tireless hard work and determination to complete this project. We expect they will do very well in IT Tralee in March! Congratulations to our debaters who recently won the diff icult debate opposing the motion that ‘Climate Change is Not Our Problem’. Our debaters, pictured right were Grace Casey, Wil-liam Davies, Sive O’Leary, Kacper Domanski, Sean O’Sullivan and Robert O’Donovan. Chinese New Year The Chinese New Year celebrations began on Tuesday the 5th of February and last for two weeks. Chinese people all over the world travel home to enjoy this huge Spring Celebration in China. To mark this New Year Mrs Dignam and her class made Chicken Chow Mein with great success! The children cooked this Chinese dish f rom scratch and even attempted to eat it with chopsticks! Well done to all involved!!

Junior Entrepreneur 2019

Pictured right are the Junior En-trepreneurs taking part in the JEP Competition 2019 with their business idea “Bake It Eazy”. As part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme, the senior classes are holding a Showcase Day to promote their product 'Bake It Eazy' on Friday, 8th March in the school f rom 1pm to 2.30pm. Their idea is to make baking easier by providing all dry ingre-dients for various recipes in one jar. Recipes and dry ingredients for brownies, scones, cookies, and cupcakes will all be available to purchase on the day. Tea/coffee and samples of their products will also be available. The children would like to in-vite everyone f rom the community to attend and celebrate the f ruition of their hard work, cooperation dedication, and commitment. Our Walking Bus

St Michael’s N.S is currently trying to attain its 10th Green Flag. The theme this year is Global Citizenship Trav-el. The pupils and teachers of our school are travelling to school on Fridays in a Walking Bus that picks up pu-pils at designated stops throughout the village. It is the hope of all in Sneem school that we can come together and travel together in our Walking Bus on Fridays and in doing so promote travel but also reduce our carbon footprint by not parking any cars outside our school on that day. The Walking Bus has been a great success so far with every class participat-ing and enjoying the chance to meet f riends and talk and walk before school.

Photo by Mary O'Neill. Davy Breen's Lough Brin Walk on St Stephen's Day raised €2,655 in aid of Kerry Palliative Care Services. He presented the cheque to the Kerry Hospice Foundation representatives in Blackwater Tavern on Friday night. Davy would like to thank Mary and Teddy O'Neill of Blackwater Tavern for their support , Timothy Clifford who helped Davy with the event, members of Templenoe GAA Club who sponsored raff le prizes and everyone who supported the charity so generously. Davy had a barbeque and ref reshments at Lough Brin Lake for all the walkers. The Lough Brin Walk on St Stephen's Day is to become an annual event. Inspired by Davy Breen's Lough Brin Walk for Kerry Palliative Care Services, Paudie Kelliher Kilgarvan, the Captain of Kenmare Golf Club, organised a whip around at Kenmare Golf Club for the charity and raised €1,155. Davy presented the cheque to members of Kerry Hospice Foundation in Blackwater Tavern last Friday night. A total of €3,810 was raised in aid of Palliative Care Services in Kerry.

The Kerry Hospice Foundation (KHF) is a voluntary organisa-tion, founded in 1990, which helps provide funding and support for Palliative Care Services in Kerry and support patients who are living with an advancing illness. Kerry Hospice Foundation (KHF) raised, €3.6 million to complete the Palliative Day Care Unit /Suaimhneas centre which opened at Tralee General in 2007 and KHF built a 15 bed Inpatient Unit in 2017 at a cost of €6.5 million euro. Since Kerry Hospice Foundation was set up in 1990, Kerry People have raised 11 million for Palliative Care Services. It costs €10,000 per week to cover specialised nursing, equipment and complimentary therapies needed to run Palliative Care Services in Kerry.

Freshwater Pearl Mussel Project A farmer information meeting in relation to the Pearl Mussel Programme will take place in The Blackwater Tavern on Tuesday, 19th February at 8pm. The results-

based Programme aims to improve conditions for the endangered f reshwater pearl mussel in the top eight f reshwater pearl mussel catchments in Ireland. It will run until December 2023 (for further information see www.pearlmusselproject.ie). Ironically it was Wilde’s inability to realise the actual ‘importance of being earnest’ - superbly explored by Holland and O’Connor - that contributed to the failure of his libel action against his lover’s father, the Marquess of Queensbury and ultimately to his downfall in the two subsequent prosecutions which f inally led to his conviction for gross indecency.
