The Cambridge Project will provide a larger, upgraded stabling and servicing
facility at the Cambridge Depot – necessary for Thameslink, Great Northern
and Greater Anglia trains.
The provision of a new 12-car carriage wash facility in the north area to
replace the previous 8-car carriage wash in the south area via a new
connecting road will provide the functionality required from both operators.
In addition to the above, new train servicing will also be provided in the south
yard.

1. What type of chemicals are to be used in the carriage wash?
Greater Anglia are still reviewing which chemicals to use. Part of the review process includes any potential environmental impact from the proposed chemicals when used, to both operational staff and the local surroundings.
2. Predicted noise levels adjacent carriage wash?
3. The first Environmental Impact Study has returned a decibel rating of circa 40db – at the closest
property to the loudest point of sound. This a good start for the design, and we want to improve
on it.
4. Can we install an acoustic fence the carriage wash and Great Eastern Street?
5. The carriage wash is to be designed using noise transfer reducing cladding. The use of acoustic
fencing/barriers on previous projects has not provided significant benefits due to the way noise
transfer travels. The design team will however, consider all options to minimise noise transfer
where required.

What will the carriage wash enclosure and plant room look like and how big will it be?
Although not designed in detail yet, the carriage wash enclosure will be approximately 9m high, 7m wide and 33m long
How many trains will use the wash every night?
The estimated number of trains through the area is four per hour. The exact number can’t be predetermined, however the hour-by-hour usage will vary. We will continue evaluate this throughout the build and initial operation.
