Login to www.snailspacespirit.com and create an account and make sure you are located in your Chapter file (Fountain Valley) and the month you need to post your points. Points are accumulated on a monthly basis and all Chapter events should be posted to the month you participated in them. If you forget to enter your points for a particular month you may go back and enter them, but remember “Spirit Points” are tabulated on a monthly basis at the end of each month. This addition would only be counted for annual points. How to receive points: • Showing up at a regularly scheduled club run – 10 points • Attending the monthly club meeting – 20 points • Participating in the monthly club race – 20 points • Additional Points for wearing the “Club Uniform” at races – 10 points • Carpooling to races with other participants (two or more people)-10 points • Writing a newsletter article (and having it published) – 20 points • Hosting a club social event – 30 points • Attending a club social event – 10 points • Recruiting new members – 10 points • Volunteering at a local race – 10 points
Points are awarded for the activities listed above. Prior to each monthly meeting, the previous month’s points will be tabulated and the high scorer will receive a $20.00 ASP gift certificate. You can only win the monthly award once a year thus allowing all a chance at winning. How ever your points are added up and at the end of the year those with the most pints will get more chances at the grand prize drawing of a $100.00 ASP gift certificate, a free membership renewal to the running club, and a free entry to any cub race (limits Apply) of their choice for the next year. All points should be entered no later than the 1st of each month to give the Social Chair time to calculate the winner. Marina White
As a newbie to running in 2003, I did a lot of very short distance road training. When I moved to Santa Barbara for college in Fall of 2004, over a year after I had discovered the joys of running, I slowly began to explore longer distances and trail running. But It wasn’t until my first marathon in 2007, Pacific Shoreline, that I seriously started running trails when the race awarded every finisher a pair of Salomon trail shoes—nice perk!
I made a commitment to do my first trail ultra in these new shoes, and chose the Santa Barbara Nine Trails 35 Miler in Nov 2007. I was training very hard, including setting PRs in the 5K, 10K, half, and full (all on road) around that time, but my lack of experience on trails and ultras was evident on race day. Once on the course, I got lost several times and was mentally fatigued and shocked to realize that a 35 mile run with over 11,000 feet of elevation gain would be such a struggle. Close to 15 hours later, I made it to the finish line, but swore off trail running for a while.
It wasn’t until over 4 years later when I was seeing someone who loved hiking that I decided I should take up trail running again. However, now with over 70 marathons under my belt, I was a lot wiser in my approach. I found some races in interesting areas nearby which I never really explored, such El Moro, Saddleback, Bishop, Yosemite, and Holcomb Valley (Big Bear), and did 50Ks there, plus a variety of hikes such as at Baldy, Jacinto, Gorgornio, and Whitney. I loved the hills, altitude, and nature! Such a difference from road running …Over about 6 months, I saw so many beautiful parts of California through trail running… I was hooked! I even managed to successfully complete Pikes Peak Marathon that year due to all this trail training. That was a fun accomplishment!
While I am currently back to doing mostly road races, I still make an effort to get at least one day a week in on some nice trails, and it is always a nice surprise if a road-race I am doing has a segment of trail in it. In closing, I would suggest that everyone try a trail race of some distance at some point in their lives. The rewards that off-road running bring, such as the diverse, challenging terrain and beautiful scenery, are certainly worth the effort to discover some of the many trails heads in OC, So Cal, and beyond!
