ANZAC is an acronym devised in 1915 for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It soon became the term that the men used for themselves. For the term Anzac references The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) that served in World War One. In 1914 when war was declared the AIF was created to assist Great Britain in the allied war effort. The AIF was made up of volunteers who enlisted specifically for the war. In total, approximately 50,000 Australians were sent to Gallipoli. The youngest known was 14. Although 18 was the minimum legal age for enlistment, records show that a number of young men under the age of 18 served at Gallipoli. James Martin, the youngest Australian to serve in World War One, died at age 14 and 9 months in October 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign. Of those 50,000 Australian soldiers 8,709 died and 19,441 were wounded at Gallipoli between the months of April and December 1915.

On Friday the 24/4/ 2015 before we headed to the Mandurah war memorial to look at the names of the people that we fought for us in the war, we had a meeting and a minute silent to pay our respect to those that lost their lives. Being there I felt overwhelmed that the people fought and died for our country. It completed in April 2005, the memorial has become a consecrated place of reflection and rest. It was good to share lunch with my SMYL family at Cicerellos!

By Chanise Tonkin Serpentine falls is a nice place to bring your family. It is a good place to swim there are kangaroos there. And you can use the BBQ it has a nice picnic and bush walks. It was good to have lunch with SMYL. Even though it was cold, some of us went swimming.

Hi my name is Kayla Perry and I am 15 years of age. I am a student at Smyl Community College. My interest includes Photography and editing. I got into photography about 6 months ago when I started seeing photographs over the internet that I really liked and decided I want to do the same. I got inspired to take photographs and be like other photographs. I got even more motivated when my dad brought me a DSL camera.(Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H300).From then I took more and more photos. Now I wish to do a photography course and become a fully qualified photographer.

Pantera is an American heavy metal band which formed in 1982/2004 They started around the same time as Metallica both being intense bands to see live Pantera is well known for putting on thrilling live shows and also know for Dimebag Darrells solos on guitar unfortunately the band came to an end because of the murder of Dimebag Darrell in 2004 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM9QVI1NRFs

Stevie Churchill

By Vaughan Cseresznyes Stevie Churchill was born in Bristol CT USA 21 years ago and now lives in LA. Stevie has been riding for approx 15 years as a BMX stunt rider. Currently he rides for Team Federal and the YouTube team The Come Up. His favorite rider growing up and still today is Garrett Reynolds. His favorite choice of shoes vans chukkas or Nike Janoskis.

A bad teacher is someone who has stopped caring, doesn’t help or listen the students .A bad teacher who just lets kids do whatever they want and who don’t understand the kids. They also don’t explain the work task probably to you. A bad teacher is someone who takes out their problems on the kids. This is how I felt at my previous school. A good teacher is someone that is supportive, caring, helpful, understanding and give you respect. A good teacher is also someone that tries their best and sees something in you that you don’t and does their absolute best to help you, even if you gave up on yourself they help you get back up. This is what I’ve seen at SMYL community college. I really like all the teachers at this school. Even though I haven’t been here for a long time, I’ve seen the stuff they do for the students. They have been given the job to look after us and help us and I honestly think they are doing a good job. They care and they do a lot for us. All the teachers at our school show their own way of caring. They are nice and funny and make you feel that they want you here at SMYL. At my previous school I didn’t feel this way where her at SMYL I feel like I belong. Sometimes the students take that for granted but they are like our parents at school. At SMYL we have respect for each other but I also think we need some improvements in some areas. I hope we improve on respecting each other more. One thing I like about SMYL is if you were absent and you come back, everyone says they missed you and ask where you have been. It shows that they care, which at my previous school they didn’t. My year 10 teacher at SMYL Emily is the best. She lets us listen to music, and music helps a lot of us to work. All of us feel comfortable talking to her about anything and she understands you. She is a good example of a good teacher.

Method Peel and finely slice the garlic, peel and roughly chop the onion and carrot. Finely chop the parsley stalks, then roughly chop the chorizo and chicken thighs. Put a lug of oil into a large lidded shallow casserole or paella pan on a medium heat, add the garlic, onion, carrot, parsley stalks, chorizo, chicken and paprika, and fry for around 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Deseed and chop the pepper, then add to the pan for a further 5minutes. Stir through the tomato purée and crumble in the stock cube, then add the rice and stir for a couple of minutes so it starts to suck up all that lovely flavour. Pour in 750ml of boiling water and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Pop the lid on and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes, stirring regularly from the outside in and from the

inside out, and adding a splash of water if needed. Stir in the peas and prawns, replace the lid, and cook for a further 5 minutes, or until hot through. Season to perfection, then chop the parsley leaves, scatter them over the paella, and serve with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over.

Commander George Zhukov was born 1869 in a small village named Strelkovka in 1906 he joined the Russian army and fought in world war one and was awarded the Cross of St George twice and promoted to the rank of non-commissioned office.

He joined the red army in 1918 during the Russian civil war (1917 – 1921) became a troop commander and was later put in charge of the 1st Cavalry Army . He was then assigned by Stalin in October 1941 to defend Moscow.

With Zhukov at their lead, his troops not only hold their position and defended the capital, but launched an extreme counterattack on the German army. In 1943 Zhukov coordinated the Battle of Kursk with his classic tactic, first defence.

Zhukov followed the battle carefully and knew the exact moment the German army was out of breath and at that time launched his attack and had no concern for human life. Stalin felt threatened by his popularity. Zhukov was later assigned to the relatively insignificant Odessa Military District.

After Stalin's death in 1953 Zhukov was returned to favour and became Deputy Defence Minister and then Defence Minister in 1955.

In 1957 he was removed from his ministry by Nikita Khrushchev and was never given another role in the government.

George Zhukov was married twice and had three daughters. He died 18 June 1974 and was buried on the Red Square next to the Kremlin walls

In the art room, students have been focusing on the human face. Using only a minimal palette of acrylic paints, they have created dome striking works of art.

BUSHRANGERS 2015 Unit leader

SMYL Bushranger cadets have been undertaking several activities this year. We have been monitoring the re-growth from the fires that came through Rockingham earlier in the year and Cadets have been measuring, photographing and monitoring the re-growth. Our cadets have also been involved in the rescue of Loggerhead Turtles at Rockingham Lakes through the Naragebup Environment Centre. These turtles are now endangered and our Cadets are keen to help restore their numbers. The Naragebup Environment Centre now has a breeding program and our Cadets are keen to be involved in 2015.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA SMYL Cadets were involved in Clean Up Australia this year and we cleaned up the beach at Secret Harbour. We were very proud of our efforts and all cadets participated well. Other activities planned for the year include:

• Bushcraft and Survival activities • Practical Nature Conservation Projects • Personal Growth, Parks, reserves and

landscape management (Projects)
