What is a clamp connector?THE SMX CLAMP CONNECTOR COMPRISES: Two Butt Weld Hubs which are welded to connecting pipes Two Clamps (180o segments) which can be rotated around the hubs to fit the most practical installation position One Sealring which fits between the Butt Weld Hubs One Bolt Set four studs and eight spherically faced nuts to mount the clamps over the hub shoulders Essentially it is a four-bolt pipe connection system typically weighing 75% less than a comparable ANSI or API flange.

Depending on size, usually between three and eight clamp connectors can be assembled/disassembled in the same time as one traditional flange connection. Moreover a complete SMX Clamp Connector can weigh less than the eight bolts found in a comparable ANSI flange. The clamp connector allows faster replacement and/or interchange of instrumentation and ancillary equipment, which reduces costly down-time while providing a highly effective metal-to-metal seal. This seal is designed to withstand the extreme rigors associated with high pressure, extreme temperature, radical thermal cycling, external piping loads and severe corrosive conditions. Initially designed specifically for high pressure or high temperature applications, due to the ease of installation and assembly when compared to regular ANSI or API flanges, the SMX Clamp Connector is routinely specified for more diverse applications. Due to the clamps ability to rotate, there are no bolt holes to align. Only four stud bolts to tighten, unlike regular flanges which can be between eight and 24. Bolt torques are typically 70% lower for clamp connectors than regular ANSI or API flanges. IN SUMMARY The SMX Clamp Connector provides improved strength at a much lower weight when compared to a traditional flange (ANSI B16.5). It provides a real advantage over the conventional flange because it is much lighter in weight and requires less space, is easier to install than a comparable flange, and in all instances is stronger than the pipe it connects. Commonly known as being as strong as a girth weld. ASME B31.3 ANSI B16.5 ASME VIII Div 1 & 2 API 6A / Q1 NACE MR 01-75Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) Compliance A declaration of conformity with Annex 1 of Directive 97/23/EC has been obtained from DNV Inspection AB, Stockholm (NoBo 0409). This permits the use of the new design/assessment method for clamp connectors. The method is valid for fluid group 1 and for the PED categories up to and including IV.

What makes it work?The sealring cross section resembles an inverted T shape. The vertical section is known as a rib and the horizontal base the ring or lip on either side of the ring rib. It is the seal lips that interface against the hub sealing surface to form a high integrity seal. In the assembly of a clamp connector the clamps fit over the hubs and as the nuts are torqued the clamps draw the hubs together. The sealring rib ensures proper seal alignment in the made-up position. As the hubs close together, the sealring lips deflect elastically against the hub sealing surfaces. This deflection loads the lips of the sealring, forming an energised seal. Internal pressure reinforces this seal so that it is both self energised and pressure sealed. PRE ASSEMBLY POST ASSEMBLY

COMPONENT PARTS BUTT WELD HUBS The SMX Butt Weld Hub is usually supplied ready to be welded to pipe, or as an integral connector on any associated piping equipment. They are manufactured in any material that is compatible with the mating pipework of the system, and as a standard, will have weld bevels in accordance with ANSI B16.5. During assembly, as clamps draw the hubs together, using the angular outer shoulders of the hubs, the sealring is deflected against the hub seating surfaces, thereby creating the pressure tight seal. Mating hubs can also be supplied as threaded, socket weld, or to the customers own preferred design. BLIND HUBS SMX Blind Hubs are manufactured for all standard high pressure clamp connections. They are designed for use during hydrotests, at 1.5 times design pressure, and can also be used in the assembly of closures for use on pressure vessels, reactor vessels, heat changers etc. Available in all compatible materials, they can be supplied drilled and/or tapped for instrumentation, such as temperature or pressure gauging, and in special designs to suit any specific requirements.

WITHSTANDING EXTERNAL PIPE LOADS The SMX Clamp Connector is capable of withstanding higher tensile loads than conventional flanges, maintaining a gas tight seal under severe bending loads, and can prevent any overload of compressive forces.
