“I am now working in Google in their headquarters in Mountain View, California. In 2012, a Google recruiter had contacted me and invited me to apply for a position with them when I was doing my start-ups. Apparently they had discovered me via the project I did while I was part of the GAMBIT Summer 2008 programme at MIT! As I was interviewing for a Software Engineer position, the questions were primarily about Computer Science fundamentals, as well as higher level design matters and my past work experience/accomplishments.

Looking back, I am very grateful for my ISM Degree. It taught me several key skills which have helped me greatly in my journey so far. The project management, collaboration and communication skills I have learnt during my time at SIS have been invaluable in running the start-upbusiness. And perhaps the most important skill of them all was learning-to-learn effectively and efficiently, which has been critical in my field of mobile app development, where the tools and platform are constantly in flux.”

“Business and IT are inseparable in today’s context. It was clear to me that being the catalyst to integrate business needs and IT infrastructure will be a critical role in any organisation. I’m with Johnson & Johnson’s Medical Devices & Diagnosis business sector as a Product Specialist. My customers are surgeons from various Singapore hospitals and I am in charge of devices that are used routinely in operations like thyroidectomies, colectomies and etc. On top of driving demand for the devices, I will provide the surgeons with technical training and support to aid in their surgical practices. As such, I have the rare privilege to be in the operating theatres with my surgeons during their operations.

Another very fulfilling aspect of this job is that I am involved with helping the surgeons further their surgical skills. We do so by setting up workshops and sending them for conferences and visitations both locally and overseas. I had the opportunity to travel to Malaysia, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Vietnam for visitations with my customers this year. All in all, I’m thankful to our Dean, Professors, Instructors and staff who are extremely dedicated to helping us learn. I became more independent (and yet be able to work effectively with my teammates) and learnt to be answerable to my own deadlines and commitments.”

“I’m with the IT Security Consulting team in EY, performing web application and network vulnerability assessments. In simpler terms, that comes under the spectrum of “white hat” hacking.

The SIS curriculum was right on the mark about the skills that the market is looking for— from the technical and management IS modules, to the core modules and second major; the knowledge and skills learnt all came into play in one form or another. The general electives were important too as they allowed for a more all-rounded education.

The 4 years in SIS was tough, but it taught me to work and learn independently. This survival skill has helped me immensely with my job where, (often enough) I’m assigned with an unusual project and a deadline, and expected to figure it out.”

“I wish to debunk the common misconception that IS requires students with IS background. From my observation, most freshmen in SIS started out with little to no experience in IS, but are currently doing very well with the help of competent teaching staff and with consistent effort.

I am from a JC background, but I am currently enrolled in the SMU-Carnegie Mellon University Fast-Track programme, which gives me the best of both worlds: an overseas education grounded by industry exposure in Singapore. Not only do I get to obtain rewarding internship and research opportunities in SMU, these experiences will be greatly value-added in CMU, which is also one of the top universities in the world reputed for its courses in technology.

In just my first few months in SMU, I have already found that you can learn as much as you want to, if you actively seek it. The SIS community has been a treasure trove of information and knowledge; wherever my curiosities lie, it has not been difficult at all to seek out the support of a caring senior, alumni or faculty staff. The second thing I’ve found about the SIS community is that all around, you can find people who are passionate about what they do, be it in security or analytics. Even for freshmen like me with little to no experience in such fields, the sheer depth and rigour of their expertise inspires many of us juniors to further hone our skills.

IT has profound applications and disruptive potential in today’s world, which made the need to be more IT-literate so compelling to me. And I’m really glad that I made the decision to talk to students and staff from various faculties before choosing SIS.”

“Having a career as a technopreneur has always been my lifelong dream. I have always wanted to combine innovations in technology with innovations in business to solve problems we face in our everyday life.  The start-up culture in SIS is extremely encouraging. The numerous success stories in SIS further fuelled my desire to start my own technology company— Nectary Studios.

In SIS, there are Technopreneurship-related courses available, such as Technopreneurship Study Missions which aim to help students to better understand the entrepreneur landscape in various countries. In 2013, I embarked on a study mission to Korea and Japan to visit the local start-ups and technology companies. We had the opportunities to interact with the technopreneurs and benefitted greatly from their sharing. It was an inspiring and unforgettable learning experience.

It is difficult to juggle both the identity of a student and technopreneur. I am often overwhelmed with far too much work to do and having too little time to do it. However, this has helped me to develop better time management skills and understand how to manage my priorities. I was appointed as the Marketing Director of the 9th SMU Information System Society and have spearheaded various activities that add to the vibrancy of student life. This includes the SIS 10th Anniversary and the Grand Feast, the largest welfare drive in SMU’s history. Through the various events, we aim to promote a balanced student life and strengthen the bonds between SIS students.”

“At SIS, a lot of our learning takes place outside the classroom, after the 3-hour seminars are over. To me, time spent in the classroom helps build the important foundation that enables us to do our independent learning. It is where we acquire the important technical skills, which are critical in the completion of our projects and assignments.

The projects at SIS are definitely not a walk in the park. Each project requires us to venture into a new field, to explore a different technology or concept, and then apply it to our final product. This often necessitates plenty of trial and error in conceptualising and implementing different solutions. Given the demands of the project, it is not possible for one member to handle everything. It forces us to think about how we can best manage the project, to divide the work up such that we play to the strengths of each member and complete the project. Thus, not only do we gain experience in project management, we also learn how to collaborate effectively within the team.

There is also collaboration across teams, especially when the projects get more demanding. Such peer collaboration is what I’m especially thankful for—a community where we’re comfortable enough to approach any of our course mates, or join in an ongoing discussion with fellow SIS students that happen to be in school. In addition, we have our seniors, who would readily offer advice to stop us from going down the wrong path. At the end of the day, the most important skill we acquire is learning how to learn. Skills taught in the classroom may get outdated, but the ability to learn effectively—not just independently, but collaboratively—is one that would never be obsolete.”

HEAR FROM OUR ALUMNI
