Misery and Mercy

In his reflections on the gospel of the woman caught in adultery, St. Augustine said that at the end there were only two left: misery and mercy, the woman and Jesus. I have found this to be such a rich reflection of my own prayer life. How unbeknownst to me, I often choose misery—that which does not truly sat-isfy my deepest longing. I choose to be selfish rather than selfless. I choose to judge rather than to give the benefit of the doubt or ask what the person might really be thinking or feeling.Jesus’ parable about the Pharisee and the publican also comes to mind. All too often I can feel superior like the Pharisee and be “mercy less” rather than “mercy full.” I don’t realize that I ought to be crying out for God’s mercy and forgiveness. Again and again Pope Francis continues to remind us that as Christians, we are called to be merciful just as our heavenly Father is merciful.Fr. Lou and I invite you to Evenings of Mercy this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week. We will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation beginning at 6pm until all are heard. Please take advantage of this great gift of God’s mercy, healing, for-giveness and freedom. The Lord longs to make us one with him and to free us from the burdens that weigh us down with heavy hearts. May we be humble enough to acknowledge our sins, ask forgiveness and then receive God’s mercy in all its fullness.

Holy Week and the Paschal Triduum

There is no time more important than this coming week here at Saint Michael Parish and in every Catholic church throughout the world. Together with our sisters and brothers in every land and nation, we gather to celebrate the great mystery of our redemption: Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection.I encourage you to plan together as a family or with friends on how you will be able to attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the celebra-tion of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday and a great Easter vigil Saturday evening. You’ll find the schedule on page 4, including hours of prayer on Good Friday and a walking Stations of the Cross from the downtown church to the Capitol Friday morning.Let us seek to make this a truly holy time, not only for ourselves, but for the needs of our local community which so often is blind to love and the saving presence of Jesus Christ.Prayers and blessings to you all these coming days.

CRS Rice Bowl Collection

Our neighbors live across the street and across the country; across the oceans and in other hemispheres. One way that we journey in solidarity with our neighbors is through our support of CRS Rice Bowl.

We will collect the Rice Bowls at Mass on Holy Thursday, April 18.. There are two ways to make your contribution: bring your bowl "as is" with a piece of tape over the money slot or combine gifts into one check made out to Saint Michael Parish and write

“CRS Rice Bowl” on the memo line. Thank you for participating in this outreach effort to our neighbors. .

Through CRS Rice Bowl, we share the journey with members of our human family around the world, and commit our Lenten prayers, fast-ing and almsgiving to deepening our faith and serving those in need.

Our fellow parishioner's request for prayers

"This Lent I am seeking to carry my cross and give up: my will to God's will. During this time I will most need prayer for: Letting God take my worries and concerns. Trust in His wisdom for where He wants me to be. I hope to: be able to listen, recognize and trust in His plan."

If you would like to pray for someone else or fill out another card, blank & com-pleted Intercessory Prayer cards are located in the St. Joseph Chapel.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER CARD INTERCESSORY PRAYER CARD INTERCESSORY PRAYER CARD

Lent is a time when we are given the opportunity to reflect on our journey with Christ. We are asked to stretch ourselves through fasting, almsgiving and prayer. We will only grow deeper in holiness as faithful disciples of Christ when we die to our pride and rise – renewed by His resurrection.

INSTRUCTIONSThese Intercessory Prayer Cards will assist in our Lenten Journey as a parish family – helping each other grow deeper in holiness. Reflect on what you would like to shed (habit, negative emotion, etc.) and what you are hoping will be transformative. On the other side is space for you to write what you are seeking prayers for this Lent.

EXAMPLE – This Lent, I’m seeking to carry my cross and give up excessive screen time. I will most need prayers to help me fight the temptation to turn to a screen whenever I am stressed, anxious, lonely or bored. I hope to attend Stations of the Cross on a regular basis.Return it next Sunday and choose one that has already been filled out. Keep it and pray for your sister or brother’s Lenten journey until Easter. Feel free to fill out another one.

Title:Description:

How this FORMED me:

Find it on Formed.org:

CONVINCEDAn interview-based documentary style film that studies intelligent, suc-cessful, articulate people from all regions of the country and a variety of faith backgrounds from atheist, to pagan, to evangelical Protestantism, to Catholicism and their individual journeys to the Catholic faith that made sense to them intellectually and spirituallyThe film is a compelling reminder of the universal need for God’s truth. You hear from a college-educated atheist blogger and mother, a poet, an English professor, a rock band pagan, and many others. Their stories are intimate, personal, and compelling. The inter-viewees are easily recognizable in a general sense, as co-workers, friends, and family members on different parts of the journey of faith. The film describes what it calls “paradigm shifts” in thinking evident from arguments and experiences that resonated with interviewees in finding out the truth of the existence of God, the death and resurrection and his Son,  and the spe-cial role of the Catholic Church. The film helped to affirm my faith and pro-vided useful tools in finding ways to talk about spirituality and reach people where they are. – Jackson Maynardhttps://formed.org/l/tMgaEyST or visit our parish website!

LENTEN SMALL GROUPSEnd of the Lenten RoadSmall Groups have finished their six-week Lenten session filled with many blessings. This week groups can gather together at one of the Easter Triduum Services. Invite those folks you’ve been praying for, too! Many groups stay together and pray together throughout the year. No need to wait for a special session. Some groups continue to meet weekly, others every two weeks or monthly. Michaela has materials (DVD series etc) that groups can borrow. If you have not yet joined a Small Group it is never too late! There are groups that meet year-round that have openings. Contact Michaela to borrow materials or to find a spot that works for you! Save the date: May 18 – Small Groups Potluck in the Gathering Space following the 5pm Mass. Contact: Michaela Moreau at (360) 292-7104 or [email protected]

Facilitators, you will be receiving an email asking if your group would like to participate in having a traveling statue of Mary in your home. Your group can sign up for a block of time and the statue can go from house to house each week.

Traveling Statue of Our Lady of FatimaThe statue is 27" tall and made of china, and therefore needs a special place so that it does not get chipped or broken. The primary purpose of the statue home visitation is to aid families in responding to the requests made by the Blessed Mary during her apparitions at Fatima. The essence of her requests is threefold: return to God; make reparation for sins; and pray the rosary for peace. The commitment required of those families desiring to wel-come Mary into their homes is also threefold: make a special effort to avoid sin during her presence, perform some form of penance or sacrifice during the week of her visit in repa-ration for sin, pray the rosary as a family in the presence of her statue each day, or at least whatever part of a rosary can be accomplished.Anyone interested in hosting the statue may contact Kathy Arnold at [email protected] or (360) 870-5901.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2019 Monday, June 24–Friday, June 28, 9am–12:30pm dailyThis year we will take you on an amazing God-filled African Safari with new adventures every day. Registration opens April 22—instructions and link next week. FROM WHENCE TRIDUUM?"Triduum” comes from two Latin words - tres and dies - that mean "a space of three days," But since we have four days with special names—Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday - the "three" may be confusing to some. They are however, one liturgical celebration. The confusion is cleared up when we understand how the days are reckoned. On all high festival days the Church counts a day in the same way as Jews count days and festivals: that is, from sundown to sundown. Thus the Triduum consists of three twenty-four periods that stretch over four calendar days. Therefore, the Easter Triduum begins at sundown on Holy Thursday, continues with Good Friday and concludes with Easter evening prayer at sundown on Easter Sunday: its high point is the celebration of the Easter Vigil. During the Triduum we celebrate the core mystery of our Christian faith: we ritu-alize Jesus' transition from life to death to risen life, and our own participation in that timeless mystery. It is so easy this time of year to celebrate these days as a historical commemoration. But we are doing for more than recalling historical facts. What Jesus did for us has con-sequences for all people at all times. His life, death, and resurrection happened to him, but they also happen to all of us who claim to be his follow ers. These days, then, are a reminder and celebration of who we ourselves are and what our own lives are about. As we celebrate the mystery of Jesus' passing, we actually celebrate the same passing over in our own lives. Jesus' self-sacrifice opened the way for us to share in new life. But this does require our own cooperation in God's divine plan of salvation. We must pass over our lives into God's hands and imitate the self-giving of God's Son. This is the way to life. "It is the Passover of the lord".

GOT CAR SEATS?It's a busy month at Pregnancy Aid with lots of requests for strollers (Spring is here)! Umbrella types are popular for tod-dlers, more supportive ones for babies. Our supply of car seats is also scarce. Because gently used 5–40 pound and 20–80 pound ones are hard to come by we usually purchase some Cosco Scenera models, $49.98 at Walmart. Used car seats must be less than 6 years old. We are very appreciative of the support we receive from Saint Michael Parish guilds and school families. Please keep all volunteers and families we serve in your prayers. Please drop off car seats or other donations during Pregnancy Aid hours (see pg. 1).
