For fifty years, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been traveling the globe, bringing the joy of traditional New Orleans Jazz to music fans around the world. Since its founding in 1961, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has nurtured and promoted traditional New Orleans Jazz as a relevant and vital indigenous American musical format.

Boasting contemporaries and band-mates of such early jazz pioneers as Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Bunk Johnson, early incarnations of Preservation Hall Jazz Band made familiar names of living legends like brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and legendary clarinet virtuoso George Lewis. Today’s lineup is no less impressive, carrying forward the band’s founding mission with a practiced ease.

Experience the energy, spirit and emotion of up-and-coming dancers from the Milwaukee Ballet II program. These young dancers come from all over the world to learn and participate in Milwaukee Ballet’s artistic repertoire, which is rooted in classical ballet with a strong commitment to new and contemporary works. Join them for an evening of dance which will showcase their technique, athleticism and individuality as dancers.

The Milwaukee Ballet II program, established in 1978, nurtures and develops dancers’ technical skills and artistry required for a professional career in dance. The Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II curriculum is based on the artistic vision of Milwaukee Ballet and gives dancers the training needed to bridge the gap between student and professional through performing opportunities with the Milwaukee Ballet Company as well as performances created specifically for Milwaukee Ballet II.

George Watsky is a young artist with an uncommon resumé. Equally comfortable in funny, political or personal work, Watsky was the Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion, is a veteran of HBO Def Poetry Jam and recipient of Robert Redford’s Sundance Summit award for his poetry on climate change. He has shared the stage with Mos Def, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and even Bill Clinton. He was selected for the first network TV presentation of spoken word on the NAACP Image Awards and the second network presentation of spoken word this April on Ellen.

Widely considered the best young performance poet in the country, further attention was brought this year by his success with his hip hop music with a viral video in January 2011. Florentine Opera Company America’s SongbookFriday, March 23, 2012 7:30 pm Musical highlights of American opera’s brief yet colorful evolution are presented in this delightful showcase. The stirrings of American opera started in the 1930s with Virgil Thomson (Four Saints in Three Acts) and George Gershwin (Porgy and Bess). It expanded with the works of Gian Carlo Menotti, Douglas Moore, Carlisle Floyd and Leonard Bernstein. More recently, American opera has taken root in the music of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Mark Adamo and William Bolcom. The evening’s emcee will be William Florescu, General Director of The Florentine Opera Company.

The Florentine Opera Studio provides season-long, comprehensive artist-in-residence employment for talented singers beginning their professional careers, while serving the mainstage, education and outreach goals of the Florentine Opera Company.

Each of the players has brushed up on his “thee’s” and “thou’s” to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-play, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we’ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. The night could reveal a tragedy, comedy or history. Nothing is planned-out, rehearsed or written. Each play is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new!

From her beginnings in the Brazos Valley of Central Texas, she was launched by a strong mother and a large supportive family down a path whose pitfalls Ruthie learned to avoid, and whose destination she charted on her own, with talent, faith and determination lighting her way.

The Florentine Opera’s The Three Little PigsFriday, March 23, 2012 10:00 am • Grades K-5 • OPERA

Once upon a time there were three little pigs. Their names were Despina, Cherubino and Don Giovanni… The Florentine Opera presents The Three Little Pigs, a one-act opera featuring the music of Mozart to retell the tale that is familiar to all children. The three pigs learn the importance of reading as they attempt to build a house that can withstand the wolf’s mean threats.

This opera was written and compiled by nationally renowned composer and arts educator John Davies. All of the music for The Three Little Pigs is excerpted from the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arias and ensembles are performed from Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte, The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute, making this event a perfect introduction to opera for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Billy and his sister Bonnie live at the Dancing Cow Dairy Farm in Wisconsin. After seeing Bonnie’s dance recital, Billy can’t get the music out of his head or the movement out of his body. Bonnie and her friends, Robin, Violet and Lulu, start to teach Billy about ballet. His interest is piqued and suddenly he is seeing dance everywhere he goes, from the swans that fly overhead to the mice in the barn and the cats that chase them away. Billy’s sports loving friends don’t understand at first, but when they see him doing some exciting tricks and dancing with Lulu, not only are they impressed, but they come to his show and cheer him on!

This interactive show will focus on the athleticism of ballet and the important role boys play in the art form. It will also include an educational Study Guide featuring fun facts about Wisconsin dairy farms and a section about the art of Schomer Lichtner whose work frequently featured cows and ballerinas inspired by Milwaukee Ballet dancers!

Ballet-in-a-Box features the Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II dancers.

His music has been performed by a wide variety of performers and ensembles throughout the Americas.

These twenty-somethings currently work in the community as some of Milwaukee’s teachers, artists and small business owners. The girlfriends formed the group in the fall of 2009 as an excuse to get together to do something they love! Mil Town Treblemakers sing a wide variety of tunes – from oldies, to pop, to musical theatre – in a fresh a cappella style.

Missoula Children’s Theatre presents King Arthur’s QuestAugust 15 – 20, 2011 • Grades 1 – 12

Missoula returns this summer with King Arthur’s Quest. This week-long residency starts with auditions on Monday, August 15, at 10 am. Children do not need to prepare anything for the audition, but they must stay during the entire 2-hour period. We ask children to bring a bag lunch each day, including audition day.

Rehearsals will be Monday, August 15, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, and then Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 2:30 pm. Workshops will be held Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:45 to 3:30 pm, and Wednesday morning from 9 to 9:45 am. Performances will be Saturday, August 20, at 3 and 7 pm.

Participation is free to all! To pre-register for auditions call the SMPAC Box Office at 414-766-5049. Pre-registering does not guarantee a spot in the play.

Danceworks’ Ballroom Dance WorkshopAugust 15 – 20, 2011 10:00 – 11:30 am • Grades 1 – 12

If you tried out for Missoula and you weren’t accepted, then consider joining Danceworks as they teach you a ballroom dance influenced by the style of King Arthur’s time period. This piece will be performed as the opening act for the productions of King Arthur’s Quest. The dance, taught by experienced professionals, offers an age-appropriate theme that sparks imagination and creativity.

Participation is free to all! Students may pre-register by calling the SMPAC Box Office at 414-766-5049 or sign up after the Missoula auditions on Monday, August 15. Students will not be able to do both Missoula and Danceworks as rehearsal times coincide.

Join us for the 5th Annual Mystery Dinner Theatre Fundraiser. The event will once again be held on stage at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. Enjoy a three-course meal while trying to solve the “who dunnit” mystery.

Each evening will include a silent auction and 50/50 cash raffle. Prizes will be given away to the best dressed individuals and couples. All proceeds from the evening will support the amazing season you see listed in this brochure including the Performing Arts Series, Student Matinee Series, Free Summer Concert Series and our arts education and outreach.

Refund PolicyAll sales for the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Series are final. Refunds will be given only when an event is cancelled and not rescheduled. The SMPAC does not cancel or reschedule performances due to inclement weather, nor can we offer refunds.

If you are unable to attend a performance, the donation of your ticket(s) to the SMPAC would be appreciated to enable resale. Your contribution will be acknowledged for tax deduction purposes.

Special AccommodationsSouth Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify the Box Office when you are purchasing tickets if special arrangements are required.

Handicap Accessible seating is available. The theatre allows for nine seats to be removed for persons remaining in their wheelchairs, as well as eight seats with arm rest removed for those transferring from a wheelchair or walker to a theatre seat. Seeing Eye Dogs are allowed in the theatre.

Assisted Listening Devices are available for patrons who are Hard of Hearing. Large-print programs, Audio Description and American Sign Language Interpreted performances are available upon request and where applicable.
