The RK10A/9 relays provide two features:Firstly, they provide a signal to the fire indication panel to generate a supervisory alarm identifying the SOU of alarm origin when any smoke alarm within an SOU is activated.

The initial signal from the RK10A/9 relay to the fire indication panel is delayed by 8 seconds. The signal from the RK10A/9 relay automatically resets when the silence button on the smoke alarm is pressed or the smoke alarm is clear of smoke. The supervisory alarm raised at the fire indication panel also automatically clears once the smoke alarm is cleared.

The fire indication panel can be programmed with appropriate delays to operate a range of outputs including but not limited to the Building Occupant Warning (BOW) system from the supervisory alarm.

Secondly, the RK10A/9 relays allow a feedback signal from the firepanel to activate the sounders in each smoke alarm linked to the RK10A/9 relays. This feedback signal can be activated in conjunction with the BOW system on a general fire alarm to enhance the audible performance of the BOW system. Alternatively the feedback signal can be used as a local alarm after a delay programmed into the fire indication panel from a smoke alarm that has not reset.

4th terminal Feature As the largest supplier of smoke alarms in Australia, PSA developed the patented 4th terminal feature. This world’s first design allows the smoke alarm to interface with fire systems and become part of the building occupant warning system. This new feature not only provides early warning to occupants but will satisfy the stringent requirements of BCA without the high cost usually associated with most fire systems.

It is possible to connect AS3786 smoke alarms to fire panels (FIPs). While interlinking is not a requirement of the BCA or Australian Standards, it provides an opportunity to enhance the performance of detection and occupant warning systems in Class 2 buildings beyond the “deemed to satisfy” provisions of the BCA. This solution usually provides a cost saving compared to most fire detection systems by delivering the required decibel level in each occupancy. The system is designed so that the smoke alarms do not activate the fire brigade.

PSA Products have developed an interlinking relay, the LIFESAVER Model RK10A/9. Typically, one RK10A/9 relay is installed for each sole occupancy unit (SOU) and all smoke alarms within the SOU are connected to the RK10A/9 relay.

Smoke Alarms are installed in each apartment, in accordance to BCA, and are monitored by the isolation relay RK10A/9.

When a smoke alarm is activated, a signal is sent to the RK10A/9. An 8 second delay is implemented to help eradicate false alarms, power surges and electrical fluctuations.

In the case of a fire, the isolation relay activates the field module on the apartment level. This signal is transmitted to the fire panel to sound a local alarm. A further time delay can be configured on the fire panel before a general alarm is activated.

A general alarm is achieved by the fire panel sending a signal to activate all other smoke alarms in other apartments. This activation of apartment smoke alarms will give building occupants an early warning indicating a fire in the building.

Under no circumstances does this system contact the fire brigade. The fire brigade is only notified when the sprinklers and AS1670 smoke detectors in the common areas are activated.
