RWA systems
Smoke extraction and ventilation functions for staircases in one system
An appropriately designed and reliably func-tioning RWA installation
√ saves human lives√ ensures minimum smoke development in escape and rescue routes thus keeping them accessible
√ provides an unobstructed view and facili- tated fi re fi ghting
√ restricts the spread of fi re
Wherever maximum reliability is required of a smoke extracting installation in the event of a fi re and fumes need to be removed quickly, smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems (RWA) can be used to open smoke outlets automatically and in a safe manner. This pro-tects occupants against smoke poisoning and property against damage. Within the context of everyday ventilation, RWA systems can be used to supply the desired fresh air.
√ protects building, furniture and stored goods against consequential damages
√ reduces fumes and possible subsequent chemical reactions

RWA system components
1 Drives / Opening systems
Used on roof-lights or façade openings, they ensure automated ventilation and reliable smoke extraction in the event of a fi re, and also provide natural room ventilation and thermal comfort.
2 Control centres
RWA control centres are responsible forsupplying, monitoring and controlling all the connected components as well as for ventilation control. The units fea-ture built-in batteries so that the sys-tems can still respond to a fi re in the event of a power failure for a period of 72 hours.
3 Accessories
Smoke and maximum heat detectors causing automatic alarm release in the event of a fi re, and RWA buttons for ma-nual operation. Ventilation switches are used to control ventilation and deaera-tion functions.

Smoke exhaust to EN 12101-2 (SHEV)
The Gretsch-Unitas system solution
For smoke extraction in the vertical dimen-sion (façade), the standard EN 12101 – part 2introduced, in September 2006, demands the installation of SHEV systems approved as a whole. It is therefore no longer possible to install an unapproved combination of single components, only SHEV installations are allowed which have been approved as a com- plete system.
Components of a SHEV system
1 Aluminium or timber window profi les
2 Glazing and gaskets
3 Window fi ttings (stays, hinges, etc.)
4 Drive system with associated fastening material
Especially in the fi eld of timber windows, the Gretsch-Unitas Group provides comprehen-sive SHEV system solutions for inward ope-ning window assemblies.
The SHEV system solution offered by the Gretsch-Unitas Group of Companies is based on the standardised Euro groove for alumi-nium profi le systems used by profi le manu-facturers such as, e.g., Alcoa, Alumil, Heroal, Reynaers, Raico and others.
SHEV system solutions approved in accor-dance with EN 12101 – part 2 guarantee a high degree of operational safety in the event of a fi re. Moreover, due to the system provider’s being obliged to clearly specify the components, product selection is made easy.
A G.U SHEV system consists of approved and certifi ed G.U fi ttings (stays, hinges, locking mechanisms) exclusively. All customary ope-ning methods for inward and outward ope-ning windows are possible.

√ How high is the window to be fi tted with a drive or opening system?
√ Which snow zone is the building located in?√ How large is the fl oor area of the room or staircase to be equipped with a RWA system? Which geometrical or aerodynamically effi - cient opening area is demanded by the building authority? Are there any obstacles such as, e.g., lintels or special profi le thick- nesses to be taken into account?
√ Which type, size and number of window(s) and which opening direction are to be considered when planning the RWA installation?
√ How heavy are the window sashes? Are the drives and fastening elements suited to resist the forces arising on the windows and to achieve the opening widths required?
√ Which mounting method is preferred? (face-fi xed or concealed assembly?)
√ Are the supply and exhaust air openings freely accessible, thus requiring extra safety (burglary preventing) installations?
√ What other infl uences are to be expected?
Control centres
√ Have all openings demanded by the type of building and required according to legal regulations been determined?
√ Have the current consumption values (Ampere) of all drives to be controlled by the RWA centre been summed up?
√ Is it necessary to confi gure ventilation groups? If yes, how many?√ Is automatic triggering through temperature rise or smoke forma- tion useful in addition to the manual release option?
√ Are wind and/or rain sensors to be considered?√ Are alarm or failure reports to be transmitted elsewhere?
Selection criteriaThe questions listed below are intended to make it easy for potential buyers to select the appropriate RWA system components.

With their compact design and pleasant ap-pearance, chain drives are an ideal solution for the fast, electromotor driven opening of exhaust air apertures and for room ventila-tion.
A large variety of mounting brackets allows for assembly in almost every building situ-ation:
– face-fi xed or concealed assembly
– assembly on inward or outward opening top or bottom hung windows, parallel off- set windows, projecting top hung windows, horizontal or vertical pivoting windows, side hung windows, and roof- lights
The intelligent drive technology enables the synchronous control of several chain drives, also in combination with locking actuators.
[1] Due to its plastic case, the ELTRAL KS 30/40 type is not approved for RWA use within the EU.[2] Depending on stroke[3] Up to 500 mm stroke

[1] All values are reference values which may vary depending on the profi le used and the height of the building. The maximum window size and the permitted lengths of unmounted profi le jambs (in view of suffi cient gasket pressure) must be agreed with the profi le manufacturer and/or window fabricator. The instructions of the particular profi le system, hardware and glass manufacturers must be observed. The maximum length of unmounted profi le jambs is 1500 mm.[2] VA = Locking actuator (see page 39 et seq.)

According to the directives of RAL, it is absolutely necessary that
bottom hung sashes must be fitted withcatch stays supple-menting the stan-dard fanlight fittings.
G.U security stays EURO-SOLID prevent damage that might arise from inappropriate attachment of the opening stays. Moreover, they provide great convenience when cleaning the tilted sash by holding it in the angle desired.

RWA control centres are available as com-pact or as extendable modular units. They are used wherever highest reliability and rapid extraction of smoke gases are needed.
RWA control centres are responsible for supplying, monitoring and controlling all the connected components (e.g., automatic de-tectors, manual alarms, electric drives) as well as for ventilation control.
Providing for the prompt actuation of smoke extraction openings to allow toxic gases to escape in the event of a fi re, RWA control centres constitute a primary element of preventive fi re protection.

Electric motor chain drives are ideally suited in the context of centrally controlled room ventilation.
Thanks to their compact design and the great number of face-fi xed or concealed mounting variants, they can be used – al-most regardless of the installation condi-tions – on inward or outward opening top or bottom hung windows, parallel offset windows, projecting top hung windows, horizontal or vertical pivoting windows, side hung windows, and roof-lights.
Intelligent electronics allows for the syn-chronised control 2 drives, also in combina-tion with locking actuators.

RWA systems
Important advice
Service and maintenance
In order to guarantee the permanent functioning and the value of RWA installations over many years, it is necessary that all technical compo-nents are serviced and tested for safe functioning at regular intervals.
Moreover, it is important to recognise potential danger or missing safety mechanism which might become a source of danger, and to eliminate any risks.
The operator and/or owner is obliged to verify the proper and faultless interaction of all components at least once a year. He must take all necessary measures to protect people using the installations against danger and property against damage.
Regular servicing provides functional safety and diminishes the risk of damage and of liability in the event of a damage. With a service con-tract, the operator’s and/or owner’s fulfi lment of the duty to maintain the installation ready for operation is always documented and proved.
The legal basis for RWA installation servicing is established in direc-tives and regulations which vary from country to country.
The directives and regulations applying in Germany are: “Muster- und Landesbauverordnungen (MBO/LBO)” of the particular states; direc-tive BGR 232 for power-operated windows, doors and shutters (Ger-man employer’s liability insurance association); various directives for safety at work.
As for safety testing, it is necessary to proceed according to the specifi cations of the applicable regulations and standards (e.g., DIN 18650), and to the specifi cations of the manufacturer.
The technician performing the safety checks must be a trained and qualifi ed professional. In general, service and maintenance work may only be carried out by an expert authorised by the manufacturer.
Safe operation and use
With regard to bottom hung sashes, the RAL directives and also the directive BGR 232 for power-operated windows, doors and shutters (German employer’s liability insurance association) prescribe the use of additional catch stays to prevent sashes from uncontrolled falling:
Safety devices such as, e.g., the security stay EURO-SOLID from Gretsch-Unitas must be installed appropriately to ensure their re- liable functioning. The opening width of the catch device must be wide enough to allow for the maximum stroke of the opening motor.
Assembly, installation and initial operation may only be performed by trained experts authorised by the manufacturer.
Motors, central control units and accessories must always be in a faultless technical condition to ensure safe functioning and to pre- vent hazard; they may only be used as intended and in compliance with the particular mounting and operating instructions.
It is necessary that the local regulations and directives should be observed, e.g.:
– Directives for safety at work – Accident prevention regulations – Regulations concerning electrical and electronic engineering (e.g., VDE directives), DIN/EN standards – Directive BGR 232 for power-operated windows, doors and shutters (German employer’s liability insurance association) – Instruction sheet KB.01 of the German association of window and façade manufacturers (VFF) concerning power-operated windows
It is important to always ensure that RWA installations comply with the prevailing regulations. Special attention must be paid to win- dow opening width, permitted installation dimensions, opening speed, pushing force, connecting cable cross section as a function of the cable length, and to current consumption.
The electric drives are designed for use in dry rooms only. They must be protected against dirt and humidity.
Planning and installation
The supply cables must comply with the local fi re protection regulations and feature cross sections which are adequate for the required motor currents.
Manual RWA alarm pushbuttons must be installed at central points where they are clearly visible and freely accessible.
Automatic smoke detectors must be positioned in a way that they can be reached by smoke. Planners and installers must be aware of the space to be covered and provide for a suffi cient number of detectors placed at the right spots.
See also DIN VDE 0833, part 2.

New buildings and renovation
House entrance and patio doors of timber and PVC
Barrier-free living to DIN 18025
Versatile accessories provi- ding solutions for complicated installation conditions
Threshold-to-frame connec- tors for all current profi les
The importance of thermal break:
With normal interior air conditions (interior temperature + 20 °C, re-lative air humidity 50%), con-densate forms with a surface temperature of approximately + 9.2 °C (dew point temperature).
With normal outside temperatures (down to -10 °C in winter), the effi -cient thermal break of G.U thres-holds achieves a surface tempera-ture clearly higher than + 9,2 °C. The formation of condensate is prevented, the bottom area of the door will not suffer from moisture, a sound building structure will be protected and preserved.
