Mid-term review objectives
– Assess progress against deliverables and milestones agreed to in the Smog/Acid Rain work plan for this fiscal year.
– Make mid-term changes to address issues identified in oral and written reports.
– Provide information/ideas for defining next years work plans.
– Provide information to report to EC senior managers on status of program.

Key science role
• Through R&D, provide credible and relevant information for the development of sound public policy on Clean Air and inform Canadians on current and future air quality. – building science foundation for policy discussions
though the contribution to science assessments
– developing tools and products to provide services to Canadians [e.g. air quality forecasts]

Overarching Scientific Question
• What are the quantitative relationships between primary particulate and precursor emissions and ambient PM, ozone and acid deposition levels for all regions of Canada ?
![Page 6: Smog/Acid Rain R&D Mid-term review October 25-27.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022082817/56649e6a5503460f94b67eca/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Structure of Clean Air Program
• Results-based management and accountability framework [RBMAF]
• Program described in terms of – Intermediate and Ultimate outcomes – Activities supporting the achievement of outcomes.
• Science is but one of several departmental and inter-departmental activities that contribute to achieving the outcomes.

Science Foundation and Activities
• Activities in support of RBMAF intermediate outcome : Targets are continuously improved
– Determine linkages between air quality and human health/environmental impacts.
– Determine urban/rural sources of PM and its precursors.
– Assess contributions from natural sources.
– Evaluation of transcontinental transport.
