WHEN LUNCH COMES HOME AGAIN – UNEATEN What's going on when school lunch comes home uneaten again, now an unrecognisable impression of a sandwich at the bottom of the bag? Almost nine out of 10 Australian parents say children's resistance is a major obstacle in their efforts to provide a healthy diet, and in many cases school lunches are one of the battlegrounds. But, it's a battle families can do without and there are some simple steps to help avoid it. At a glance:

Children have small stomachs and prefer to graze all day rather than eat fewer, bigger meals.

Sweet treats fill kids up, leaving little room for healthy lunch options.

Reassure your kids that it's OK to bring their lunch home so you can see what they need to eat that evening.

Lunch is not as vital as breakfast in setting up your child for the school day.

Concern is warranted when meals at home are being skipped as well as lunch. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/ food/when-lunch-comes-home again

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between later this term. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the survey will be sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 29 March, 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages

WHY REDUCE TELEVISION TIME? studies have shown we use less energy watching TV than sitting still TV influences the food choice of kids – Australia has a high rate of food advertising during children’s viewing hours TV replaces time a child can be active and enjoy physical activity there is an association between TV watching and being overweight 40% of children 5 – 12 years report watching an average of two hours or more of television or videos a day.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY On Monday 11 March, our school leaders attended The National Young Leaders Day at Darling Harbour. They had the opportunity to listen to various guests speakers, such as Cate Campbell and Holly Ferling and participate in some interactive activities which helped develop their leadership skills.

Here are some inspirational leadership quotes from the day:

* Don’t be scared to dream big

* Setbacks are an opportunity to learn

* When you are successful, be humble

* A setback in life is asking you how much you really want it

* Always give something a go because you never know where it will take you

* You don’t have to be old to make positive changes in the world, you can start now

* Being leaders to make a positive change can be as simple as doing something nice for somebody else

Uniforms will be available for purchase on: Wednesdays and Thursdays

8.30am-9.30am and 2.30pm-3.00pm Please see staff in the Administration Office

3D Printing Mrs Palmer and our Year 3 to 6 students have been learning how to use a 3D printer in Technology lessons. Students have had a great time designing their object using a special program on the computer. Some of them were lucky enough to have their object printed. It has been a great experience for all students involved.

K-2 EASTER HAT PARADE On Thursday 11 April, all Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual Smithfield West Public School Easter Hat Parade.

All students have to do is design and create a decorative Easter hat and bring it to school on this day. Please note that students will also be making a hat in the classroom and may choose to wear this one on the day.

The Easter Hat Parade will begin at 9.15am and conclude with the Easter Egg Raffle which will be drawn by the P&C. All family and friends are welcome. Miss Reddy and Miss Novak

P&C EASTER RAFFLE The eldest child in each family will receive a booklet of raffle tickets. Tickets are 50 cents each or 3 for $1.00. SELF PORTRAITS

6R ‘took a good look at themselves’ then sketched and painted self-portraits. Collectively we are ‘not a bad looking bunch’ as the display above shows. Adam, Ofa, Keith and Ahmad’s portraits each showed noticeable likeness to ‘the real things’!

SOME OF US HAVE OUTSTANDING BOOKWORK!

Lizzy, Thalia and Ann Thien are ‘leading the way’ in showing great pride in their written work and their bookwork presentation if of high quality. Overall, we have made a very positive start to our final year of primary school education.

Science Experiment: Rain Cloud In a Jar

Students in KC took part in their first ever science experiment. This science experiment was a fun way to explain how rain clouds work. KC have been learning about daily and seasonal changes in the environment, focusing on the Earth and Space strand in Science.
