Smith-Wintemberg Award: 1992 Presentations Jane Kelley

May 9, 1992, London, Ontario

The Smith-Wintemberg Award is named for two pioneers in Canadian Archaeology: Harlan I. Smith and William J. Wintemberg. The decision to give this award, based on lifetime contributions to Canadian archaeology, rests with the Executive. Previous recipients are: Charles E. Borden, J. Norman Emerson, and Richard G. Forbis.

For this occasion, the Executive has taken the unusual step of making two Smith- Wintemberg Awards. In addition, we are presenting Honorary Lifetime Memberships to both of tonight's honorées -as well as Dick Forbis. It gives me great personal pleasure to make these two presentations:

James V. Wright

Jim Wright was born and raised in Toronto, and received his introduction to Canadian Archaeology through Norman Emerson and the University of Toronto field studies of the late 1940s and 1950s. Jim obtained his training in archaeology at the Universities of Toronto, McMaster and Wisconsin.

He has been active in the field of Canadian archaeology for the past 42 years, and much of this time he has spent as an officer of the Archaeological Survey of Canada where he served in the roles of Chief and Senior Research Scientist. In the course of his diverse field studies, Jim has worked in virtually every Province and Territory within Canada, with his most notable contributions residing in the study of Ontario Iroquoian Archaeology.

Jim has represented Canada with distinction at many international symposia and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Anthropological Association.

SMITH-WINTEMBERG AWARD

It is particularly fitting that he be a recipient of the Smith-Wintemberg Award given that many of his field studies have followed directly on the work of William J. Wintemberg. It is a pleasure to announce the award and further recognize Jim's stature in the study of Canadian archaeology.

William E. Taylor, Jr.

Bill Taylor was born in Toronto, Ontario and educated at the Universities of Toronto, Illinois and Michigan. He has been actively involved in Canadian archaeology for the past 42 years.

His main contributions to archaeological scholarship have come from his work in Arctic Canada, where he has directed field projects from northern Quebec to the High Arctic islands, and westward to the coasts of the Beaufort Sea. The lasting interest in this work is shown by the two full-day sessions which were devoted to discussing Arctic problems at this meeting.

Of equal importance to Canadian archaeology have been his administrative contributions, as Arctic Archaeologist and Chief Archaeologist at the National Museum of Canada (1956-1967); as Director of the National Museum of Man (1967-1983); and as President of the Social Sciences and Research Council (1982-1988).

Aside from these positions, Bill has served on numerous influential committees relating to archaeology, Arctic research and Canadian studies. He has been honoured with Fellowships in the Royal Society of Canada, the Royal Geographical Society of Great B ritan, the American Anthropological Association, and numerous other prestigious societies. Among his many honours, we ask that he accept the Smith-Wintemberg Award of the Canadian Archaeological Association.
