What is Smiling for Smiddy?

A talented triathlete and respected physiotherapist with the world at his feet, Adam Smiddy was just 26 years old when he was diagnosed with melanoma.

His disarming smile, which rarely left his face even amid the gravest of circumstances, gave his family and friends a window into the soul of a gentle, kind-hearted and unassuming boy from Home Hill.

In early 2006, Adam discovered a small lump in his groin. A biopsy revealed it was a malignant melanoma. He had immediate surgery to remove the lump and his lymph glands.

Over the next six months, Adam’s health and fitness started to return. But sadly, it was short-lived. During a bike ride with his close friend and triathlon coach, Mark ‘Sharky’ Smoothy, Adam confessed he was not feeling well. Just three weeks later, after eight days in hospital, Adam passed away.

Without his knowledge, Adam’s cancer had spread to his vital organs.

To honour Adam, Sharky and two other mates, Ron Steel and Oliver Bodak, fulfilled one of Adam’s unrealised dreams in honour of their fallen mate—they rode 1600 km from Brisbane to Townsville with nothing but a credit card in their back pockets.

While doing so, they raised $24 000 for cancer research. The following year, 22 more friends joined the Smiling for Smiddy ride. In 2008, 50 riders took to the road, raising an incredible $420 000 for cancer research.

Year on year Smiling for Smiddy has continued to grow, with more and more people joining the team. Cyclists; triathletes; swimmers; road crew volunteers; and supporters.

Together you’re Team Smiddy.

What started as a humble ride in memory of a mate has grown into a wonderful series of challenges; a circle of friends, with each of you bringing your own stories and your own passions.

Over the past 12 years, Smiling for Smiddy participants and supporters have raised more than $8 million for cancer research at Mater.

That’s an incredible effort, but there is still so much more to be done.

It’s a long, hard road to fight cancer, but we know you’re up for the challenge.

Are you in?

A word from our major sponsors “Over the past 10 years, Bottlemart has contributed more than $1.1 million to fund breast, ovarian, prostate cancer and melanoma research projects at Mater through their partnership with Smiling for Smiddy.

As well as jumping on their bikes, and opening their wallets, our staff and publicans have also supported 31 Smiling for Smiddy events and introduced Smiling to Smiddy to 27 regional communities throughout Australia by hosting fundraisers and welcoming the cyclists with a cool drink at the end of a long day on the bike.

The cancer research being supported by Smiling for Smiddy holds relevance for our publicans and their employees and customers, especially Mater Research projects such as those that look at developing a potential vaccine for prostate cancer.”

David Gyte General Manager of LMG Queensland and Harry Brown

"We’ve been privileged to partner with Smiling for Smiddy since 2013 and in that time, we’ve been lucky enough to participate in multiple events and see the true impact Smiddy has on people’s lives. It’s not only the vital funds that are raised, but the support, love and care that the Smiddy community provides to those in need.

When we began this partnership I don’t think we were prepared for what an amazing journey it would be, the people we would meet, the affect they would have and the lifelong friends we would make."

Zane Williams Professional Cleaning Services

“Russells have been involved as supporters of Smiling for Smiddy for five years.

During that time, we have been privileged to see firsthand the tangible benefits which Smiling for Smiddy brings to Mater Foundation and directly to cancer sufferers, through the research which Smiddy supports. Rarely in our experience does one see charity dollars being so directly used for such observable good works.

In 2018, Russells—myself included—is jumping back in the saddle to once again challenge ourselves to make a difference—and we’re so glad you’ll be joining us.”

Stephen Russell Russells, Managing Partner

Setting up your online fundraising page

Your personal Smiling for Smiddy fundraising page has now been created for you and you should have received an email with a link to your page. Now all that’s left to do is personalise it!

To make your fundraising page as effective as possible, upload your own photographs or a video showing you in action out on the bike; the events you’re hosting or your inspiration.

Like Liz, whose fundraising page we've included above, you should use your fundraising page to share your story and/or motivation for signing up for the Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge: explain why you are trying to raise money for Smiling for Smiddy, how much you want to raise, why you signed up for the trip, how their support will make a difference and why you are personally moved to raise funds for cancer research.

It’s all about personalisation! If you need a hand with this, shoot an email to [email protected].

Once your page is ready to go, you can email a link to your fundraising page to potential donors, easily allowing them to make a safe and secure credit card donation. Your donors will be issued with a receipt when they donate and donations are automatically processed and transferred to Smiling for Smiddy.

All donations are tallied and displayed on the fundraising page meter, so you can see how much you’ve raised so far!

Through your fundraising page you can also deposit funds raised from an event. Please note funds raised online cannot be used towards your travel costs.

If you have any questions about this please contact: Christian Killeen (07) 3163 8000 [email protected]

Quick Tips 1. Donate to yourself. Kick everything off

with a healthy donation of your own and people will be much more inspired to get on board and support you!

2. Share your story. The easiest way to make people care about what you're doing is to tell them WHY you're doing it.

3. Say thank you. We all know manners are cool, so make sure you have a thank you ready to go each time someone donates!

What will my impact be? Investing in game changing research

Imagine hearing the words ‘you have cancer’. They’re three small words but they can have a huge impact—on the person diagnosed, as well as their family and friends.

Heartbreakingly, each and every day in Queensland around 70 people and their families are blindsided by a cancer diagnosis.* That’s almost three people every hour.

It affects mums, dads, brothers, sisters and children—each and every one of us will be touched by cancer in our lifetime.

And we don’t know about you, but we’re pretty adamant that something has to change. We need to play our part in the fight against cancer.

Since 2006, Smiddy riders, triathletes, swimmers and supporters, just like you, have raised more than $9 million for cancer research at Mater. These funds have already helped enable some of the breakthrough research discoveries that have the potential to change, and save people’s lives.

Together you’ve funded:

• research into improved cancer detection and diagnostic tools;

• projects which are already improving treatment options and outcomes for cancer patients; and

• additional support and care services for people living with cancer.

But we need you to leverage your networks to generate more funds for cancer research through Smiling for Smiddy.

“I’m looking forward to getting out of the lab and into the peloton for Smiling for Smiddy’s signature event, the Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge. The work we’re doing is vital in the fight against cancer and it will be great to meet everyone who is helping make that happen!” — Professor Brian Gabrielli, 2018 Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge rider

This year, with your support, we want to raise more than $1.4 million for Mater Research—our world-class institute that’s investing in some very promising work in the cancer space.

By fundraising for Smiling for Smiddy, you’ll be assisting Professor Brian Gabrielli’s team at Mater to carry on a project which, if successful, could have a life-changing impact on thousands of Australians suffering from melanoma, prostate, ovarian and breast cancer.

You will also contribute to the impact of global research by funding key collaborations with researchers in Queensland and around the world.

Curtho's story

“This year’s check-up was a few days after I returned from my second Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge.

“My Dermatologist had a close look at a mole on my left calf which had been there for years and, to me, hadn’t changed—but he insisted on taking a biopsy.”

That biopsy revealed that the mole of Curtho’s calf was a Grade 1 melanoma.

“I'd just ridden 1600 kilometres with a wonderful group of people, raising funds for cancer research and next up, I was being booked in for surgery the following day!”

Due to the size and type of the melanoma, the surgeon also needed to take a skin graft from Curtho’s thigh and as he lay on the operating table, Curtho thought about his Smiddy family.

“I know I regularly have a skin check, but how many of the wonderful riders and road crew do? How many of my Smiddy team mates do? We wear hats, sun arms and apply plenty of sunscreen when doing these amazing events, but is everyone doing the other things? Are they having check-ups? Are they looking after themselves,” Curtho said.

“When we’re on the road, we’re always sharing the sun safety message, but we really need to walk the talk and look after ourselves—and that includes having regular skin checks!

“Because of the regularity of my check-ups, I’m fairly sure my Dermatologist knows my skin better than I do, but that means he also knows what to look for—because I certainly didn’t think anything had changed with the mole on my leg.”

Just days after rolling into Brisbane as part of last year’s Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge peloton, rider Andrew ‘Curtho’ Curthoys was diagnosed with a melanoma on his left leg.

An avid cricketer in his youth and lover of the great outdoors, Curtho has been vigilant about sun safety and annual skin checks since his dad was diagnosed with melanoma in 2002.

“Dad had been a carpenter which had required him working on many building sites over his working life. Back then, there wasn’t a real awareness of the impact of the sun or sun safety,” Curtho said.

Four years later, just one day after Curtho’s 41st birthday, his dad passed away from melanoma.

“Through the wonderful work being done at Mater Research, the prognosis is now much better for people diagnosed with melanoma (and other cancers); targeted treatments meant their chance of survival has increased; giving them more time with their families."

“That’s one reason why I ride; to raise the funds necessary to help the researchers help the families.”

Sadly, the passing of Curtho’s dad wasn’t the last time cancer would touch his family.

“In our family of six, five of us have been diagnosed with cancer; Dad with melanoma in 2002; Mum with kidney cancer in 2014—just after I started training for my first Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge—and then in 2016, one of my siblings was diagnosed with bowel cancer, and another has had multiple skin cancers requiring a lot of surgery,” Curtho said.

“The impact of that diagnosis was immense; suddenly cancer was a whole lot closer. Yes, Dad passed away from cancer and Mum had kidney cancer, but they were older. Suddenly cancer was right on my doorstep and that’s why I keep riding with Smiling for Smiddy.”

But there was one more diagnosis to come—and this time it was Curtho going under the knife.

“I’ve had a skin check around September every year for the last 20 years and in that time I’ve had both basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) removed," he said.

What do I do with the funds I’ve raised?

Need a little inspiration when it comes to fundraising ideas?

Over the last few years our riders have came up with some very creative ways in which to raise their funds: • Satisfy people’s 3 pm sugar craving by putting some of the

Cadbury fundraising kits in the lunch room or office kitchen along with a Smiling for Smiddy poster. To fundraise with Cadbury chocolates visit: http://www.fundraising.com.au to set up an account and order online.

• Some riders from the same side of town grouped together and approached their local / suburban newspaper. A rider in Gympie made good use of his local paper, where several stories ran.

• If you are self-employed or run your own business, explain what you are doing to your suppliers and customers. Don’t be afraid to ask for a donation. You’ll be surprised how willing they are to support you.

• Set up a wind trainer and spend a few hours pedalling at your local café / coffee shop to raise awareness and seek donations. You may need to liaise with the owners for permission, dates and times. We can issue you with receipt books.

• Send personalised / targeted emails to your address book. Tell them what you’re undertaking and your motivations for getting involved. Be sure to provide a link directly to your fundraising page.

• Break the 1600 kilometre ride into 10 kilometre segments and sell them to supporters for $10 each so they can “own a piece of your ride”. A past Smiddy rider raised significant dollars doing this.

• Raffle yourself – A past Smiddy rider named Doug promoted “Doug for a Day” and sold tickets for $20 and raffled himself for a full 8 hour day, in which you could use Doug for whatever purpose you wanted: house work; mowing lawns; even a hot date!

• There might be a store close to you, such as a Bunnings or Anaconda, or an event that allows local groups to hold sausage sizzles to fundraise. Don’t underestimate the sausage sizzle—our riders have raised huge amounts of money by taking part in these.

Once your fundraising money starts coming in, there are multiple ways you can get it to us:

Online: Funds donated to your online fundraising page are automatically transferred to Smiling for Smiddy, and count this towards your fundraising target.

Ideally, most of your sponsors should be able to contribute via your online fundraising page. This cuts back on administration and cash handling for you and for Smiling for Smiddy.

Alternatively, your sponsors can make a credit card payment over the phone, or send in a cheque or money order made out to Mater Foundation.

Mater Foundation payment details

Name: Mater Hospital’s Appeal Limited BSB: 014-278 Account number: 775240886 Reference for deposits: S4SC180FLD-YourSurname

Additionally an email notification of date of transfer, name and contact details of transferee and details for the receipt should also be sent to:

Christian Killeen (07) 3163 8000 [email protected]

Cheque donations made payable to: Mater Foundation

All postal payments should include a covering letter indicating that it is for the 2018 Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge, your name, the name and address of the person to be receipted and the amount of their donation.

Trip notes

Day 1 – Friday 24 August 2018 Brisbane to Nanango Starting from Brisbane (location to be confirmed), we’ll roll out to the west of the city onto quiet country roads, before making our way north. We’ll join the D’Aguilar Highway for the final section into our overnight stop at Nanango, where the locals have been hosting Smiling for Smiddy since the first ride back in 2006. Tonight’s dinner at the Nanango Showgrounds will be provided by the local services clubs before we settle in for a night in the swags. Cycling distance: 209 kms

Day 2 – Saturday 25 August 2018 Nanango to MundubberaA new course for day two will see us travel to Kingaroy and join the new Kingaroy to Murgon sealed rail trail, giving us the chance to ride away from traffic, relax and take in the scenery. We’ll meander through farmlands and forests as we make our way to Mundubbera where we’ll stay in cabins at the local caravan park and in local motels. Tonight we’ll enjoy the hospitality of the local community services clubs around the caravan park’s fire pit. Cycling distance: 210 kms

Day 3 – Sunday 26 August 2018 Mundubbera to BiloelaIt will be an early start today as we pass through citrus country. But the good news is, today marks the last of the major climbs as we head over the Monto range and roll along the high plains before our final drop down the range into Biloela. Tonight we’ll be hosted by the Biloela-Thangool community and we’ll enjoy an amazing night of fun before enjoying the comforts of being billeted by local residents. We’ll also be able to let our hair down because we’ve got a later start tomorrow! Cycling distance: 200 kms

Day 4 – Monday 27 August 2018 Biloela to BaralabaToday’s later start means we’ll be able to enjoy breakfast with residents from the Biloela/Thangool area and even grab a coffee in town before visiting the kids at Thangool State School. Day 5 – Tuesday 28 August 2018 Baralaba to Blackwater Today we’ll continue on through quiet back roads as we head into Queensland’s coal country. This is where everything is big—road trains, coal trains stretching for kilometres, massive wide loads and big open country. But in Blackwater the local community’s heart and welcome is just as big and tonight we’ll enjoy a community dinner before bunking down with community billets for a good night’s sleep before a longer day tomorrow. Cycling distance: 155 kms

Day 6 – Wednesday 29 August 2018 Blackwater to ClermontThis year we’ll take the alternate course north of Blackwater across the Bedford Weir towards the community of Tieri before picking up our previous route from Capella. This afternoon we’ll roll into Clermont where we’ll enjoy a welcome (and no doubt a little face painting with zinc) at the local schools before another community dinner. Cycling distance: 202 kms

Trip notes

Day 7 – Thursday 30 August 2018 Clermont to Belyando CrossingBelyando has often been referred to as the spiritual home of Smiling for Smiddy. After several days enjoying the hospitality of the communities we’ve passed through, it’s now just the peloton and the road crew as we tackle the 400 kilometre stretch between Clermont and Charters Towers, with little civilisation in between apart from a roadhouse at Belyando. This is where the importance of teamwork, mateship and spirit usually become apparent as we roll into the Belyando Roadhouse to enjoy this unique part of outback Queensland. Tonight we’ll camp under the stars and sample a different way of life in rural Australia. Cycling distance: 176 kms

Day 8 – Friday 31 August 2018 Belyando Crossing to Charters TowersToday will be a big day, with close to 200 km of cycling! The road slightly tends up and temperatures will start to rise, but we don’t call it a challenge for nothing. At the end of today we will be greeted by the famous green, green grass of Charters Towers at the School of Distance Ed (School of the Air). The local community will turn out to welcome us with a wonderful BBQ dinner and we’ll get to enjoy a couple of drinks and recount the past eight days before enjoying the soft grass under our swags for one last time. Cycling distance: 198 kms

Day 9 – Saturday 1 September 2018 Charters Towers to TownsvilleToday marks our final run into Townsville so excitement will be high (no matter how tired your legs may be!) The road heads down as we run off the Mingela Range to the famous lunch stop at Woodstock CWA Hall. A true icon of country Australia, this tiny hall is where the local ladies of Woodstock CWA put on a lunch to behold. After lunch, family, friends and supporters will be waiting to welcome us into Townsville and help us celebrate the great achievement of cycling 1600 kilometres in just nine days. Cycling distance: 138 kms

Smiling for Smiddy Traditions

Every Smiddy experience is unique, but there are a few things that you can always count on and that’s our Smiddy traditions.

Some of them are a bit quirky and many of them reflect the characters that have helped shape and form Smiling for Smiddy, but each of them are a little part of what makes Smiling for Smiddy, well, Smiddy.

The Huddle—started by Sharky in the very beginning, it brings all the riders and road crew together at the end of each ride in a big circle, linking arms where we recognise the achievements and successes of the day.

Speeches and presentations each night at dinner—this is the time for the team to come together, sometimes with the local community to celebrate the days ride and our achievements’ and have a little bit of fun too.

Saos, cheese and tomatoes for morning tea—we have Maria Smiddy to thank for this and it’s been a Smiddy tradition from the very beginning. But don’t be mistaken, this isn’t some casually whipped together snack. Well, it is, but there’s also an art to it, with one rider event drawing a guide as to the perfect ratio of cheese to tomato!

The hand of “Smiddy”— we ride together and stay together as a group and if you need an extra push up a hill don’t be surprised to feel a hand on your back from one of our super-human ride leaders. You will feel a burst of strength and the mountain will become a bump.

Kevvy’s cow bell—The cow bell has been in the Enchelmaier family for over a century and at the start of every day one person is given the honour to ring Kevvy’s bell to start us on our way. It is reserved for those who have gone above and beyond to support Smiling for Smiddy.

Teamwork, Mateship, Spirit—The Smiddy ethos. These three words sum up everything that Smiling for Smiddy is all about. Each night a rider or road crew member will be chosen to wear the ‘Teamwork. Mateship. Spirit’ Jersey for demonstrating these qualities throughout their Smiddy journey.

Road kill count— In 2007, Andy Schindler found his mind wandering on his first Smiddy Challenge so he decided he’d count the road kill to keep him focused, and we have done it every ride since. Look out for the Unidentified Flat Object (UFO), or maybe a confirmed kill; a bag of bones; pile of fluff; or just a bad smell (possibly from road kill or a member of the peloton). By the end you will be an expert on dead Australian fauna.

These are just some of the many Smiddy traditions—but we can’t give away all of the secrets yet, it’s all a part of your Smiling for Smiddy journey!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Smiling for Smiddy events hard? They can be; they’re called a Smiddy Challenge for a reason. But we’ve found that the most rewarding things you can do in life are very rarely easy. The Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge will push you physically and mentally—but it will also change you for the better; it can renew your focus on life and what’s important and give you a rare sense of achievement that you have not only achieved something really special, but contributed to a higher goal.

Smiling for Smiddy represents the core values of community, teamwork, mateship and philanthropic spirit. Wearing a Smiddy jersey is a privilege—and when you join us, you will understand why.

Do I need to be a hard-core cyclist? No, you don’t! Our rides draw men and women each year who range in age from 20 to 65 with varying sporting abilities and experience. Some are very new to cycling while others have been doing it for decades! What they all have in common is a big heart, a great attitude and a determination to push themselves out of their comfort zone. Very often it is the slower riders in our group who earn the most respect and admiration from their peers in the peloton.

How fast do I need to ride? We typically average between 26-28 km/h, depending on the prevailing conditions. The Smiling for Smiddy peloton is a very supportive environment and we aim to support every rider to ride as much as possible.

How do I smash my fundraising goal? As soon as you register, your dedicated fundraising team from Smiling for Smiddy will work with you to create a comprehensive and personalised fundraising plan. Someone from the Smiddy team will contact you regularly with ideas, advice, encouragement and plenty of inspiration!

We’ve also included a USB stick with links to our Fundraising Resources which include:

• How to plan an event• How to write a media release• How to approach businesses for support

+ sample email template • An email signature • A fundraising poster • And peloton and training guides

Will I get a chance to meet other people before we go? Absolutely! We have organised monthly training rides, as well as two training weekends, so everyone can get to know each other and how the Smiling for Smiddy peloton rolls. You can also join in the fun of our weekly Wednesday River Loop which rolls out of Adam Smiddy Park, Park Rd, Milton each Wednesday at 5.30 am. There will also be regular email and phone communications leading up to the challenge.

Are donations tax deductible? Donations made to Smiling for Smiddy are tax-deductible (conditions apply).

Training and Fundraising Support

The Smiling for Smiddy team are professional fundraisers and also passionate cyclists with years of experience in completing long distance cycling events. We are committed to our cause of funding cancer research and the bike is our vehicle to support this.

In terms of training, our weekly River Loop departs Adam Smiddy Park on Park Rd, Milton every Wednesday morning from 5.30 am, with coffee afterwards and we hold monthly training rides so you’ll be really comfortable within the Smiddy peloton. Both of these training sessions are a great way to meet other Smiddy riders.

We can also offer fundraising tips and can work with you to map out a fun and achievable fundraising plan.

The Smiling for Smiddy team will be there every step of the way to assist you with both the physical and fundraising preparations needed to take on the Bottlemart Smiddy Challenge.

At Smiling for Smiddy we have been operating on road cycling events in Australia, New Zealand and Europe for 12 years.
