idea, promising great results, only to, once again, disappoint us, being tossed to the side to collect dust. Which brings us to Dr. Bob's corner. The right electric toothbrushes, are not only worth the investment, but

have the "wow" factor! People that use a qual ity electric toothbrush often present with healthier mouths. We see less tartar and stain, not to mention a reduction in gum disease and cavities, leaving us saying over and over again "wow!" While it is possible to thoroughly and properly clean teeth manually, unfortunately we find that most manul toothbrush users fall short of disrupting the harmful bacterial plaque. So in our opinion, which electric toothbrushes have the "Wow" Factor?

Sonicare FlexCare by Philips. We carry these, and the replacement brush heads for your health and convenience. Sonicare FlexCare is their newest brush that offers a slimmer handle and brush heads. Sonicare produces 31,000

ultrasonic strokes per minute resulting in a "smoother ride!" We find that users have more plaque disruption and less tartar, stain, whiter and healthier teeth and gums. Wow! .....Sonicare offers a quadpacer that '. ~

lets the user know when to switch from one quarter of the mouth to the next. The handy timer also keeps track even when the user turns the brush off and back on, shutting off when attain ing the recommended two minute cycle. In a hurry, the Sonicare Elite also offers a one minute cycle, and for sensitive gums, a sensitive setting. For a more thorough clean, the "massage" mode is also available. Concerned with lingering brush bacteria? This model has the added option of a toothbrush head disinfecting unit. Research year after year, concludes Sonicare produces healthier teeth and gums. Sonicare toothbrush head replacement previously was recommended every six months, but with the newer model, replacement is recommended every three months.

., Oral B-Triump with Smart Guide by Proctor and Gamble, is our other favorite electric toothbrush, because it too produces healthier mouths! The triump pulsates (moves in and out) at 40,000 times per minute, producing a

"rougher" ride! Research is also excellent for this brush, and users often also come in with the "wow" factor, experiencing less tartar, stain, whiter and healthier teeth and gums! Many people prefer it's round head design, but we do not recommend their brush head with the rubber cup in the middle as we feel this brush is overly abrasive. Their newer model does have a convenient separate, countertop timer that allows brushing timing, and a reinforcement "happy face" when the recommended two minutes is achieved. The monitor also alerts if too much pressure is

exerted to assist the aggressive brushers, and has a 10 day replacement brush alert. Replacement is also recommended every three months.

These electric toothbrushes are especially good for those who have limited dexterity, such as the elderly and handicapped individuals. This patient population often need assistance, and the electric toothbrush is a thorough and convenient way to care for their oral health. This patient populations others such as "mouth-breathers," often suffer from dry mouth. Dry mouth is often the cause of increased oral disease. Children also benefit from the electric toothbrushes. When children are left to brush by themselves too often we see an increase of cavities and even tartar build-up. It is recommended that parents and/or care givers brush their children's teeth until the child is able to thoroughly clean their teeth, at least until they are five years old. This is easier said than done due to our busy lives and children striving at a young age to do it themselves. A good electric toothbrush can be a motivator, improving their oral health. If you still aren't sure about taking the step of purchasing one of these, we recommend trying a less expensive battery operated toothbrush manufactured by Butler, Colgate and Crest. They are not as comprehensive, but will provide good results and give you a milder experience of the electric toothbrush world. The bottom line is good oral health is a team effort. What you do on a daily basis can be just as important as our job. Plaque can tum to hard tartar in less than two days. If you can't feel the ridges of your teeth with your

tongue, tartar has formed and filled in the spaces and will continue to grow. Yes it is

A

...;....,--.-.' growing right now! Don't let harmful tartar sit there for months. It harbors disease causing bacteria, which often leads to not only gum disease and cavities, but also bad breath and the discomfort of having it removed. There is no doubt. People who brush properly twice a day for two minutes and floss at least once a day, by far have less tartar, stain, healthier mouths, and longer lasting dental work. These are the people who will most likely have the least amount of dental problems and keep their teeth for a lifetime. Person after person that come through our office who daily thoroughly clean their teeth most often leave with only their next maintenance appointment and a smile on their face. It is true that there is no guarantee an electric toothbrush will put that smile on your face, but ifused properly, the likelihood of you being the smiling person exiting our office is much greater!
