After studying food science in UCC, Deirdre started her own business selling at farmers markets in West Cork and developed Dee’s range of healthy veggie burgers to help people get more fibre and micro-nutrients into their diets. She appeared on Dragon’s Den in 2010 . “I was a one woman show entering the Den and I can proudly say now that Dee’s is an employer of almost 10 people, not to mention the knock -on effect the business has had on the local community.” As well as supplying to chains such as Dunnes Stores, SuperQuinn, SuperValu and Tesco, she has also started exporting to the UK and Dubai and was a finalist in the Small Firms Awards this year. Her business is dedicated to improving the health and happiness of those around her by creating the finest, most naturally nutritious plant-based products. “Social Media allows us to communicate with our customers in an open and honest way and educate our communities in the field of nutrition and general health in a fun yet informative way.”

Margaret Smith runs a boutique cookery school in Ballincollig in Cork called UmNumNum. Having started her business in 2009 she found out early on how crucial Social Media was to her marketing plan and also how cost effective it can be for start-ups. A self professed technophobe, she worked hard at learning how to use and understand the intricacies of Twitter and other social media platforms. Having built a strong presence on Twitter she then followed on to complete a diploma in Digital Marketing to try to understand where Social Media fits into an overall Marketing strategy. Margaret recently took part in RTE’s Nationwide TV special on Social Media in Ireland.
