Preface This document is a system administrator’s guide for SmartPlant Materials. It describes how to install a SmartPlant Materials Service Pack.

Overview


Overview Periodically, the SmartPlant Materials Product Center releases Service Packs for the software that update crucial new areas of development and any customer-requested service or trouble requests. It is important for each customer to stay current by evaluating and/or installing each new Service Pack and major release.

This document describes an overview of the process behind installing a new SmartPlant Materials Service Pack with minimal customization.

Overview


Document Scope The audience for this document is SmartPlant Materials Administrators and Oracle Developers or Database Administrators (DBA).

Assumptions and Dependencies, Constraints & Exclusions Assumptions regarding the subject matter of this document are as follows:

• The administrators and developers have access to the appropriate sample database(s) through the software required.

• The actual Service Pack sample files are available.

• Not covered in this document are any customer-specific examples of any custom configuration. All examples are for demonstration purposes only.

Purpose of this Document The purpose of this document is to instruct the DBA and the development personnel about how to install a SmartPlant Materials Service Pack.

Service Pack Process and Files


Service Pack Process and Files SmartPlant Materials customers are notified every time a new SmartPlant Materials Service Pack is issued. Once you have been notified about a new Service Pack from Intergraph, you can use the eCustomer link provided in the email sent to all customers to download the Service Pack.

SmartPlant Materials Service Packs are delivered in a packaged zip file containing two installer files and several documentation files. They are cumulative so each Service Pack contains all the updates to bring your SmartPlant Materials installation up to date with the latest Service Pack. The following is an example of the contents of a Service Pack file:

The files in each Service Pack should be extracted to a pre-determined location for software updates. Once extracted, you can begin the Service Pack evaluation and installation process.

In addition to the actual Service Pack files, the eCustomer download page includes a link to a readme file with installation instructions.

Application Server Updates Each Service Pack is broken down into two main parts. One of the parts is the Application Server installer, which launched with an installer in the main download file. When extracted from the main Service Pack file, the contents of the Application Server file just need to be installed in the SmartPlant Materials Software installation location on the Application Server.

Note

• Before applying ANY Service Packs, a backup should be made of the current Service Pack files on the Application Server.



Database Server Updates The other main part of every SmartPlant Materials Service Pack is the Database Server update file, which is also included in a separate installer in the main download file.

The Database Server installation should be executed on the database server itself in order not to have network problems harm the update process during SP upgrade. The updates to the Database Server (as opposed to the Application Server) are script-based because the updates are actually being made to the SmartPlant Materials physical database objects.

Once the files have been installed, it should look as follows:

The Service Pack updates for the Database Server are prepared to be run from an SQL*Plus session with the “Start in” location set to the above mentioned working directory. Once the SQL*Plus session is opened and connected to the target database as M_SYS, just execute the following:

• The scripts will have various processes and prompts that will need to be followed to successfully install the database updates. Be prepared to enter the passwords of SYS, M_SYS, and DISCO.

• The Oracle utilities imp and loadjava must be available on the machine from which the Service Pack installation is performed.



• Be aware that all Custom Packages (CIPs) modified with the Service Pack will be saved in the form of files in the installation_logs folder. These files might be used to implement the changes to the customized procedures after finishing the Service Pack installation.

Notes

Running the SQL*Plus session on the database server itself will also make sure that the correct release of Oracle Import Utility is used during script-based Service Pack installation.



Example Workflow

Application Server Upgrade Install the SmartPlant Materials <Version&ServicePackNumber>_AS.exe file on your Application Server. Double-click the icon to start the Service Pack installation.



Click Next.

Enter appropriate values, and click Next.



When updating an existing SmartPlant Materials Application Server, the InstallShield Wizard automatically uses the correct folders to install the new files. When updating a former Service Pack, the folder used in previous updates is shown. You can click Change to change the folder for the installation of the Service Pack.

Click Next.



Choose the Complete option to install all components, or choose Custom to select and deselect parts of the installation.

Click Next.



This window will only appear when choosing Custom. Here you can clear components from the installation. To clear a component, click the symbol in front of it, and a dropdown menu will appear. Select This feature will not be available to remove this component from the installation list.



If only the Application Server files will be installed, it should look like the following:

Click Next.



Click Install.

Click Finish.



Database Server Upgrade Install the SmartPlant Materials <Version&ServicePackNumber>_DB.exe file on your database server or on a client machine with access to the database.

Double-click the icon to start the installation.



Click Next.

When updating an existing SmartPlant Materials Database Server, the InstallShield Wizard automatically uses the correct folders to install the new files. When updating a former Service Pack, the folder used in previous updates is shown. You can click Change to change the folder for the installation of the Service Pack.



Click Install.



Click Finish. The result is:

Now launch a SQL*Plus session with this folder as the working directory. Connect as M_SYS, and run the script install_service_pack.sql. Be prepared to enter the password for SYS and DISCO.

This process upgrades your database.

Evaluating the Impact of Service Packs


Evaluating the Impact of Service Packs It is crucial that every customer evaluate each Service Pack to determine the impact (if any) to their current configuration or any customization that has been done to the delivered product. Intergraph has made this process possible by including documentation about the updates in each Service Pack. This documentation is included in the main Service Pack file download.

For example, you should read the Release Notes and the Database Differences documents.

Release Notes This document (example file name: <Version&ServicePackNumber>_RelNotes.pdf) provides information about the updates addressed, based on the Intergraph service requests or applicable numbers. If the information about a specific update is lengthy, there will be a reference to an additional file included in the Service Pack files that will explain the update in more depth. These additional files will be stored in a folder in the SmartPlant Materials home directory.

Database Differences This document (example file name: <Version&ServicePackNumber>_DBDiff.pdf) contains the actual changes to all the objects in the SmartPlant Materials database.
