INTRODUCTION [Pablo] The purpose of this report is to survey the current state of the mobile technology discussing the best smartphone to buy examining a range of brochures, benchmarks and internet sites that provide information about the latest smartphones in the market. A smartphone is an advanced mobile phone provided with an operating system able to combine the features of a traditional cell phone with other popular devices, such as GPS, PDA, media player and other devices. The report considers the performance in relation to several criteria as size, price, and other features. In 2014, sales of smartphones worldwide topped 1.2 billion.

    SMARTPHONES [Rodrigo]

    1. Impact in society The smartphone covers all. There are all kinds of apps for every user and everything you need. New competitors appear like "Smart TV" and new terms such as "Internet of Everything" suggest a future of developing. Social Networks have had a big impact in society, young people are the main users, but other ranges of ages are becoming more actives.

    2. Benefits A. User experience: Smartphones are easier to use than traditional mobile phones. The operating systems are designed for an easy handling, which brings access to future trends to common people. In addition, they provide a faster access to your working network, business solutions and support. B. Apps and support: There is a complete world of applications, most of them for free. Currently they provide more or less the same performance as a laptop, excluding high performance process like graphic design, programming..., and you can customize your own smartphone with apps for your personal experience and requirements.

Furthermore, there are a lot of business apps to get complete access to the business administration, data analysis and, communications tools to get a faster response to any contingency, giving users confidence to work in a way that's fluid and reliable for a complete control for corporate devices. This world is in a constant evolution all the time trying to catch the requirements of the users, with continuous upgrades, actualizations and new apps... C. Security: The key codes for the smartphone, cloud data storage, GPS localization, banks use verifying codes by SMS, and you can pay with them; so security is the core of the business, protecting data in ways that are robust and seamless for the user.

    3. Important features The operating systems are:

    1. Android (Google). Much more open than others, smartphones makers

and developers can innovate more easily.

    2. iOS/iPhone (Apple). With a cleaner look, an improved multitasking and quickly changing.

    3. Windows Phone (Microsoft). With a dynamic interface and, Office and Outlook integration.

Size and resolution depend of the use. Higher size and higher resolution are better to watch movies or play videogames, in contrast with a professional use, where there are other specs more relevant. Also colour and viewing angles are important. The processor enables to open apps quickly, play games smoothly... The ram loads applications from memory faster and switch between them. The storage and Expansion storage allow to store everything from photos, documents, videos and APPs. The camera. It's important to take in consideration the Megapixel and the sensor. The battery life. How much your smartphone will provide on a charge.

    RETAILERS [Rodrigo]

    1. Retailers of smartphones There are several companies on. The Telecommunications companies give you many options to buy a smartphone at the same time you get a plan. Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, Amena, Yoigo are the main retailers. Multi brand shops as The Phone House, Media Mark, Amazon and others are companies where you can buy the terminal and in some cases get a plan if you want. Depending on how you balance the smartphone features, and the plan you choose for your retailer, you will have several options to choose from a range. In addition to this, there is a whole business around with a lot of accessories, apps, insurances, advice services...

    2. Their offers The final price of a smartphone depends of several factors related to the smartphone features, which plan you are on and the payment method. Telecommunications companies sell smartphones with monthly payments they'll charge on your bill. They also offer several ways to get your personalized plan. In the following picture we can see an example from Vodafone:

There are webpages where you can compare prices between retailers which provide with lot of information about specs and performance, also they rated the phones, as the following picture:

BENCHMARKING [Rodrigo] There are a couple of magazines and publications about this topic. With every launch, a new study and new comparatives appear. Many of them are from users in the social networks, forums and blogs; also the principal media communications publish it. There are a lot of studies and everyone gets its own conclusions, not always the same.

These studies analyse the main features like price, display, battery size, camera and other specs. Their structure is: they begin with the design name and image of the smartphone, to continue with a brief resume of the specs or a list of features and finally give some conclusions about what terminal will provide the best performance. The following pictures offer an example:

    Pablo Luis Gutirrez Utande

    Page 7

Furthermore, there are other studies related to specific features, like battery size, the quality of the screen glass and other product information. For the apps, there are reviews and the user feedback on the virtual store. The goal of these studies may be used as a guide to purchasing and to get a better output for your smartphone, but sometimes it's a personal choice, because it's a great investment for the cost.

RESULTS [Pablo] After the information has been analyzed, we can conclude that the market is plenty of players, many brands and lines, lots of terminal makers, retailers and a full range of possibilities. It's very difficult to get with The One because every user wants different things and have his own restrictions, some of them based on prices. We have summarized the principal ones categorising by.

    1. Premium line These smartphones are on the top. They are usually launched with a big media campaign. They are the reference for brands and retailers. As usual, they include the best specifications and the last developments like HD screens, Quad-core processors, big battery size and a lot of Mpx (Megapixels) on the cameras. The prices of the terminals are around 600 and 1000. Examples of this kind of smartphone are: IPhone6, Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy 6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4, LG Flex2, HTC One M9 are some of them.

    2. Mass sales These are the best sellers, sometimes they have a balanced price and customer oriented features. They have lower specs or cheaper materials but they offer great performances. The design is based on the premium line so they are so similar. These smartphones are the little brothers of them. Their prices are between 300 and 500. Many smartphones are considered in this section like: LG G3, Sony Xperia Z3, Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Samsung Galaxy Note, Nokia Lumia 900.

    3. New competitors New brands have arrived, they offer good quality terminals with lower prices. These companies were completely unknown a few years ago, but now, they are playing an important role.

BQ, Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi are playing an important role moving other traditional brands like Nokia, Motorola or Blackberry that have had to reach agreements with other companies like Motorola and Google or Nokia and Microsoft to survive. The customized performance and the range of prices under 200 gives a great acceptance by users. Other way to categorize may be by operating system, this way the following chart provides an idea of the worldwide market evolution:

    RECOMMENDATIONS [Pablo]

To conclude the report we will show the recommendations extracted with the information researched. Smartphones are very technologically advanced devices and they become outdated in a few months after buying them so it is very important to think about it before purchasing one of them. Firstly, it is important to know the amount of money you are going to spend to buy it and then choose one of the different operating systems that there are. Secondly, we must think about the features we need, for example, if we do not take any photo it is probably that we wont need a good camera or if we only use the smartphone to access to the mail, the processor wont have to be very powerful. Once we have decided these things we will have to decide which smartphone to buy in the wider range of devices that there are available in the market weighing the pros and cons of each one.
