IBM and OpenPages deliver operational risk management solution to ORXA Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Banking n IBM Business Partner: OpenPages

Business Need:To help its member financial institutions better assess risk, the Operational Riskdata eXchange Association (ORX) needed to provide a more sophisticated statistical analysis and modeling methodology as part of its operational loss data service. The Association is essen-tially a “database” of risk data for the financial services industry. It was created to provide a secure platform to collate anonymous risk loss data from member organiza-tions, and perform statistical analysis on this collection of data – ultimately using this intelligence in a predictive way to make good business decisions. The challenge was to create a smarter solution – a way to work together effectively and intelligently for the benefit of all.

Solution:To meet its business need, ORX undertook two discrete projects – both led by IBM. The first addressed the requirement for a more robust statistical analysis and modeling methodology, and the second, some 18 months later, deployed a high-performance IT infra-structure to derive maximum business benefit from the earlier work. For the deployment project, ORX engaged IBM Global Services to implement a hosted platform to collect the data, analyze it and disseminate the resulting intelligence. The solution is based on a top-to-bottom

hardware and software stack from IBM. IBM Business Partner OpenPages provided a software platform for operational risk management that allows member banks to submit data and retrieve intelligence based on the real operational loss data captured in the system.

BP Information:OpenPages® is the leading provider of integrated risk management solutions for global companies.

Rabobank International turns to Virgil for SOA solutionA New Intelligence solution

Industry: Banking, Financial Markets n IBM Business Partner: Virgil

Business Need:Based in the Netherlands, Rabobank International is a conglomerate comprising 153 local banks that provide a wide range of financial services to businesses and consumers. Due to the ever-changing nature of financial data, the company’s ability to provide the best possible rates, prices and advice depends upon how quickly it can access stock market data, currency exchange rates, financial news, treasury data, interest rates and other information. However, like most other Dutch banks, Rabobank maintained separate applications for access-ing the various data sources. This situation forced employees to toggle through numerous interfaces to find all of the pertinent information for a particular client, mak-ing it difficult to offer insightful advice with any efficiency. Additionally, maintenance of the various applications across the enterprise was very expensive. Rabobank needed a more efficient way to deliver financial insight to its customers.

Solution:Rabobank became the first bank in its market to integrate its financial data sources into a single custom-izable portal that enables employees to provide faster, more accurate advice while allowing customers to track relevant information in real time, on their own. Leveraging a service-oriented architecture (SOA) based on software from IBM and IBM Business Partner Virgil, the portal eliminates the need to maintain multiple data-accessing

applications by streaming data directly from the sources. Employees and customers can adjust the portal to dis-play all of the most pertinent information on one screen. Open-standards-based IBM WebSphere and IBM Lotus software integrate Virgil’s ONE TradeEngine and ONE DataEngine with the data sources, making it possible to deliver the information via the Web.

BP Information:Virgil is a leading development and implementation organization in dynamic streaming web products based on Ajax, Comet, portal technology and a service oriented architecture.

Saving US$400 million per year by consolidating to IBM System z9A Dynamic Infrastructure and Green and Beyond solution

Industry: Banking n IBM Business Partner: EC-Leasing

Business Need:As the central bank for the Russian Federation, the Bank of Russia serves the interests of the state, the Russian people, and private businesses. Its main responsibilities include supporting the Russian currency, managing the national payment system, overseeing money and loans policies, and supervising the country’s financial sec-tor. With a variety of local payment processing systems running on more than 200 distributed servers in 74 data centers across 11 time zones, Bank of Russia faced significant challenges in terms of operational efficiency, technical support, and security.

Solution:Working with IBM and EC-Leasing, the bank simplified and consolidated its entire infrastructure to just four IBM System z9® Enterprise Class mainframes in two data centers. IBM Global Mirror and Metro Mirror enable mutual fail-over between the data centers, which are separated by a distance of 1,000 kilometers for disaster-protection and business resilience.

Petroleum refiner taps Multispectral Solutions for RFID solutionA Dynamic Infrastructure and Smart Work solution

Industry: Chemicals & Petroleum n IBM Business Partner: Multispectral Solutions, Inc.

Business Need:BP is one of the largest petroleum refiners in North America. Rather than just complying with government safety and security regulations, the company sought a quantum improvement in the way it accounted for and protected its employees. BP engaged IBM and IBM Business Partner Multispectral Solutions to develop a first-of-a-kind emergency mustering solution that translates real-time RFID data into actionable, visual information and serves as the cornerstone of new safety procedures.

Solution:By integrating active RFID technology, IBM middleware and hardware with its business processes, the refinery gains a graphical, real-time view of all employees – wherever they are. Flexible business rules developed for the solution enable a refinery to extend the benefits of real-time RFID into such key operational areas as asset management and workplace safety. The Location Awareness and Safety Solution presents a real-time, three-dimensional view of the location of employees in and around the refinery. Having this view drastically reduces the need for rescuers to conduct sweeps of a particular area in search of unaccounted for employees. The Location Awareness and Safety Solution platform itself is poised to address a far wider range of safety and

security issues – due in large measure to the flexibility of the software framework.

BP Information:Multispectral Solutions was acquired by Zebra Technologies Corp., which helps companies identify, track and manage assets, transactions and people with on-demand specialty digital printing and automatic identification solutions.

Pumping up production levels through information sharing and ‘smart’ practicesA Green and Beyond and Smart Work solution

Industry: Chemicals & Petroleum n IBM Business Partners: ABB, Aker Solutions and SKF

Business Need:With oil and gas production the backbone of the Norwegian economy, StatoilHydro – the nation’s biggest producer and largest organization in the Nordic region – needed a way to offset the natural trend toward declining production levels. StatoilHydro sought to in-corporate new technologies into production processes to transform, streamline and improve them. Compared with an average recovery rate of 35 percent worldwide, it sought to increase its rate to 55 percent for sub-sea platforms and 65 percent for fixed platforms.

Solution:To help in this effort, StatoilHydro teamed with a consortium of key industry players – IBM, ABB, Aker Solutions and SKF – to research and create new process frameworks that link advanced real-time sensing capabilities in the field to powerful, collaborative and analytical resources accessible across the enterprise. While modest recovery rates have been seen as a fact of life in mature oil and gas fields, this solution will contribute to StatoilHydro’s efforts to increase its recovery rate, thereby yielding tens of billions of dollars in revenues for the Norwegian economy.

BP Information:ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. SKF Condition Monitoring utilizes advanced technol-ogy to develop products that are capable of performing increasingly complex analysis and diagnostics.

AISO.net gets serious with Sirius Computer SolutionsA Green and Beyond and Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Computer Services n IBM Business Partner: Sirius Computer Solutions

Business Need:Using solar panels to power its data center and network, AISO.net is the first and only 100 percent solar-powered Web hosting company. It currently serves more than 12,000 customers worldwide. While the company has always met or exceeded its customers’ demands, its rapid growth was beginning to put pressure on its ser-vice delivery infrastructure. If it continued with its white box-based infrastructure strategy, AISO.net would need to build out its server capacity substantially, with a corre-sponding increase in its data center power and cooling requirements. The company would also need to invest in additional solar generation capacity, an expensive invest-ment that would enhance neither its bottom line nor its ability to provide better service to customers.

Solution:AISO.net identified VMware Infrastructure 3 application as the optimal virtualization software for its needs, and IBM System x servers - known for their standards sup-port, ease of management and scalability - as the ideal hardware platform for the job. To develop the solution, AISO.net selected IBM Premier Business Partner Sirius Computer Solutions based on its track record of creating advanced virtualization solutions using IBM hardware and VMware software. With the help of Sirius, AISO.

net achieved a massive consolidation of its data center resources through the use of advanced virtualization technologies deployed in an innovative fashion.

BP Information:Sirius Computer Solutions is a solution provider and IBM Premier Business Partner.

OATSystems helps Pacific Coast Producers leapfrog the competition and improve customer relations with RFID A New Intelligence solution Industry: Consumer products n IBM Business Partner: OATSystems

Business Need:Pacific Coast Producers — a California-based private-label packer of premium canned fruits and tomatoes — needed to respond to a major retail chain’s request mandating that suppliers tag shipments with radio frequency identification (RFID) devices. With an eye on competitive advantage, the company saw an opportunity to go far beyond mandated capabilities and develop a scalable, integrated and analytics-enabled solution that would provide the impetus to transform business processes for the company as well as its customers.

Solution:Working with IBM Global Business Services and IBM Business Partner OATSystems, the company opted for an inline RFID tagging system solution, fully integrated into the IT infrastructure. Pacific Coast Producers can now expand beyond the compliance efforts of its competitors and use business intelligence gained to improve business processes. The company further positioned itself as a preferred supplier, as the solution allows it to collaborate more closely with its customers by using the analysis of its inventory data much more effectively.

BP Information:OATSystems has helped more than 100 companies take advantage of RFID to streamline operations, enhance customer satisfaction and increase bottom line results.

Ringes deploys RFID technology to oversee and optimize freight flow in production A New Intelligence solution

Industry: Consumer Products n IBM Business Partner: Intermec

Business Need:Norway’s largest brewer/beverage distributor, Ringnes AS, sought a better overview of the freight flow at its production facilities. The company wanted to optimize the flow by gaining better control of the location and status of containers on trailers at any given time. To do this, Ringnes needed to know whether they were on – or off – site, and the time they were parked at the facility, unloaded, loaded and driven away.

Solution:In collaboration with IBM and IBM Business Partner Intermec, the company implemented a system for recording container location and status, based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Antennas placed at the main gate and at each of the 40 load gates of the Ringnes facility in Gjelleråsen record the arrival, departure, loading and unloading of each individual RFID-tagged container.

BP Information:Intermec develops and integrates products, services and technologies that identify, track and manage supply chain assets and information.

Mitsubishi Electric engages IGS and Omni-ID for asset lifecycle management and IT optimization solutionA Green and Beyond solution

Industry: Electronics n IBM Business Partner: Omni-ID

Business Need:Mitsubishi Electric Corporation’s IT infrastructure contained several hundred thousand separate hardware assets, many of which were light and easy to move (computers, monitors, cables, printers, etc). As a result, the company spent a large amount of time and resourc-es to register its assets and inspect and maintain inventory tracking. Mitsubishi also suspected that it was losing money maintaining unused and underutilized assets – including that spent on energy and license fees.

Moving forward, Mitsubishi Electric needed to adopt a solution that could increase the efficiency of its asset management processes, plus satisfy licensing compli-ance and reduce costs. Additionally, the company wanted a system that could monitor asset usage, reducing redundant assets in order to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Solution:Mitsubishi Electric engaged IBM Global Services to provide in-depth business consulting for the asset life-cycle management and IT optimization project. As part of the asset lifecycle management solution, the business replaced each of its asset’s identification (ID) tags from a bar-code label to an RFID tag. Mitsubishi implemented

the RFID tags, provided by IBM Business Partner Omni-ID. Already a user of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, Mitsubishi Electric was well versed in the use of related readers, writers, antennas, sensors and activa-tors, handy terminals and related products, Mitsubishi Electric implemented its own RFID readers and writers.

BP Information:Omni-ID is the leading supplier of low-profile passive RFID tags that are highly accurate in harsh environments due to a proprietary design.

Panasonic integrates global financial management systems with help from IGS and SunGard A New Intelligence, Smart Work and Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Electronics n IBM Business Partner: SunGard

Business Need:Panasonic traditionally consolidated funds and money exchanges only through a financial subsidiary in each region, meaning that each financial subsidiary individu-ally implemented and optimized business processes and financial management systems. Business operations had little commonality among regions. Panasonic wanted to implement a solution that would allow it to manage its consolidated business entities in a global manner, delivering near-real-time visibility of its global financial in-formation via a single integrated application environment and related set of business processes.

Solution:Panasonic worked with IBM Global Services and IBM Business Partner SunGard to develop and implement a globally integrated financial management system that drives consolidation and standardization. IBM helped the company develop Panasonic Global Treasury Center System (PATRES), a system designed to consolidate the management of funds, money exchange and in-house settlement for approximately 600 groups within the company. The Global Business Services team delivered SAP implementation services, as well as business

process re-engineering and project management services, while the Application Management Services team provided middleware and database implementa-tion-related services.

BP Information:SunGard is one of the world’s leading software and IT services companies.

Donaldson deploys Warehouse Management solution from Manhattan Associates A New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Fabrication & Assembly n IBM Business Partner: Manhattan Associates

Business Need:Founded in 1915, Donaldson has grown to become a leading international manufacturer and provider of filtration systems. The company was dissatisfied with the service level that it was providing to its customers – particularly in relation to the delivery of its products. For the past 13 years, the organization had outsourced control of its warehouse operations to an outside party, and over the past 10 of those years it had seen an annual increase of 10 to 12 percent in its business. Unfortunately, this outsourcing vendor could not keep pace with this growth, leading to shortcomings in ware-house operations. Inventory and shipping accuracies were low, leading to longer shipping times and less satisfied customers. Additionally, the existing warehouse was quickly running out of room, meaning that deliv-ery times would only delay further if Donaldson did not change its operations. The business decided to bring management of its supply chain operations back inside the company and to invest in a larger, state-of-the-art distribution center.

Solution:After exploring the marketplace, Donaldson chose to deploy the Warehouse Management solution from IBM Business Partner Manhattan Associates to support its new facility. Built around the Warehouse Management

software running the IBM System i platform, the solution controls the supply chain processes for the client’s European operations, allowing the business to easily manage its receiving, inventory management, shipping and invoicing processes. Donaldson is predominately using the original software code for its operations, modifying roughly 5 to 10 percent of the application with additional customizations.

BP Information:Manhattan Associates is a leading supply chain solutions provider.

City of Albuquerque selects IBM Cognos BI solutionA New Intelligence solution

Industry: Government n IBM Business Partner: Oracle

Business Need:Departments in the City of Albuquerque have maintained a variety of home-grown and off-the-shelf systems to manage data. With a mix of enterprise resource planning (ERP), legacy, mainframe and distributed relational data-base systems, data was spread across various systems and in multiple formats. Officials could not generate their own reports, nor could they consolidate information or share it with other departments without substantial manual effort.

Although City of Albuquerque officials wanted to convey key data to city residents over the Internet – especially public safety data – they had no solution in place to accomplish this critical task. They realized that a public extranet could be a tall order to fulfill, as the solution would need to be easy to use with minimal training and minimal software maintenance. It would also need to be scalable enough to serve many people simultaneously and quickly. The city needed to implement a business intelligence (BI) solution that was scalable, flexible and easy to use both internally and externally.

Solution:After considering several BI solutions, the City of Albuquerque selected IBM Cognos software. The city has standardized on IBM Cognos software to automate data collection and information sharing among its 7,000

employees in more than 20 departments – from public safety to libraries. To provide the right data at the right time, IBM Cognos software accesses information from the city’s key applications, including its PeopleSoft Customer Information System and Citizen Relationship Management (CRM/311) application.

BP Information:Oracle is one of the world’s largest business software companies, with more than 320,000 customers, repre-senting a variety of sizes and industries in more than 145 countries around the globe.

City of Chicago dials up help from 411 Solutions InternationalA Dynamic Infrastructure and New Intelligence solution

Industry: Government n IBM Business Partner: 411 Solutions International

Business Need:The City of Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communication (OEMC) wanted to scale its digital video surveillance infrastructure from an initial installation of 250 cameras to more than 3,500 cameras. To support this growth, the organization also needed a storage system that could support a growing amount of high-resolution data and allow OEMC employees to view it from any workstation in the organization’s data center. Further, the OEMC needed a system that could support its long-term goals, which included integrating its surveil-lance infrastructure with the existing surveillance systems of other city agencies, such as the airport authority and the police department. Implementing such a system would enable the OEMC to comply with mandates from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and establish the city of Chicago as an innovative municipality.

Solution:After looking at solutions from other vendors, the OEMC engaged IBM Business Partner 411 Solutions International (411) to implement a storage solution from IBM. With the new IBM solution, the client can store high-resolution video surveillance data from cameras installed through-out the city. City departments use this surveillance data to record and efficiently review potential criminal

and/or emergency situations, allowing emergency workers to respond proactively, without waiting for witness emergency phone calls. The IBM Business Partner worked with IBM to implement the IBM storage hardware and servers in this solution.

IBM and LOIT build interconnected wireless sensor network for China New Media A Dynamic Infrastructure, New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Government n IBM Business Partner: LOIT

Business Need:China New Media Development Zone (CNM) needed to help its client The Xingguang Park (XGP) capitalize on two important opportunities. First, XGP wanted to leverage robust technology to build an interconnected wireless sensor network (WSN) to support better management and adhere to response requirements. As a major television park, XGP has numerous clients – including TV stars, station employees and tourists – who enter and leave the park every day. The intent of the new solution would be to use the WSN to guide and serve visitors according to their registration level. In addition, XGP wanted to expand its services portfolio by implementing a Media Content Cloud.

Solution:Based upon its strong existing relationship with IBM, China New Media Development Zone (CNM) selected IBM Global Services and IBM Business Partner LOIT to help. The team closely followed CNM requirements to develop a solution that would help XGP manage its park from a central command center. The new solu-tion consists of three layers, comprising sensors, monitoring and workflow. At the core of the sensor layer is the WSN – a set of sensor networks and active

RFID tags. Tags will be issued to guidance, equipment check-in, boundary management and emergency command systems.

BP Information:LOIT focuses on providing Applications Systems and Business Intelligent Solutions for the banking and financial services sector.

LCRA turns to IBM and Syclo for smart solutionA Green and Beyond, New Intelligence, Smart Work and Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Government, Energy & Utilities n IBM Business Partner: Syclo

Business Need:Responding to a wave of population growth in central Texas, LCRA ramped up its operations, increasing its capacity for electric power delivery, water supply, wastewater processing and other public services. The challenge was to accommodate the significant growth while maintaining reliable, cost-effective operations. To meet this challenge, LCRA would have to rely heavily on its ability to closely track its growing inventory and the activities of its workforce. But the existing system failed in this capacity, and the organization was spending a large portion of its time and money on costly, short-sighted spot repairs. Moreover, the system was difficult to use, particularly for scheduling routine equipment maintenance activities. Generating reports was also time-consuming: only the IT department could produce reports, and the process often took a few days. As a result, reports were frequently outdated by the time they reached the requesting users.

Solution:Using IBM Maximo Asset Management software along with IBM Business Partner Syclo’s SMART Mobile Suite for Maximo, LCRA consolidated asset information into one repository, automated its most crucial and

time-consuming processes, better mobilized its field technicians, and substantially reduced corrective maintenance. The system provides the flexibility to accommodate the tracking and reporting needs of LCRA’s separate lines of business. And, as the organiza-tion expands across Texas, the system can scale accordingly.

BP Information:Syclo delivers mobile software technology that enables customers to experience significant gains in productivity and overall operational efficiency.

Making major strides in patient care by integrating healthcare information A New Intelligence solution

Industry: Government, Computer services n IBM Business Partner: T-Systems

Business Need:SES is the public healthcare service for the regional Department of Health in Extremadura (Spain) and operates all of the region’s public hospitals, medical care centers and associated central administration. SES’ focus was to improve the quality and delivery of health-care. However, because each facility operated as a silo with its own patient records system and isolated processes – the data in one facility was not acces-sible regionally or from other facilities – it prevented the delivery of high quality patient care and further burdened doctors with manual processes. SES sought to have all the regional facilities act as one team with one com-mon goal: improve the quality, efficiency and delivery of healthcare. To achieve their goal they needed to remove the many barriers that existed between facilities.

Solution:Working with IBM Global Business Service and T-Systems, SES designed and deployed a regionally integrated healthcare system that supports and manages all SES patient records, connecting more than 13,000 users to the system through an enterprise portal. Patients will be able to go to any health center in the region, knowing the local doctor will be able to view their complete records, enabling faster clinical decision making.

BP Information:With a global infrastructure of computer centers and networks, T-Systems operates information and communications technology (ICT) for multinational corporations and public institutions.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in South Korea deploys an electronic passport system A New Intelligence and Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Government n IBM Business Partner: SI Company

Business Need:Among its other responsibilities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in South Korea worked to manage travel and customs policies for the nation, and in particu-lar, the agency was responsible for maintaining passport systems for travelers. The nation’s existing systems were able to keep incidents of passport forgery down to .06 percent; however, MoFAT was confident that this number could be reduced. The organization wanted to deploy a more comprehensive passport management solution that would help to protect Korean citizens without frustrating their travel efforts. At the same time, the orga-nization hoped that this new passport plan would help the nation better comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations.

Solution:With the help of local IBM Business Partner SI Company, MoFAT deployed an electronic passport system that equips traditional passports with embedded chips bear-ing data unique to the holder, such as headshots, fingerprints and iris patterns. So when travelers pass through a customs screening area, specialized

ICAO-compliant passport readers can access the identification information stored on the embedded chip, enabling screeners to more quickly verify passport authenticity. And since this information is now in an electronic format, MoFAT can share information with other government offices.

Industry: Government, Computer Services n IBM Business Partner: Tung-I Information Service Co.

Business Need:The Institute for Information Industry (III) is the govern-ment agency dedicated to supporting the development of the IT industry in Taiwan. III had set out to provide the IT infrastructure for Taiwan Biobank, a genetic data-base project designed to enable various research groups to analyze genetic information. But it soon encountered a variety of challenges. For example, the Biobank proj-ect was in its pilot phase, and the project requirements were neither clear nor determined. And a government regulation regarding privacy and genetic information had yet to be finalized. With these issues in mind, III sought an IT system that would not only be highly reliable and scalable, but that would also be capable of meeting the project’s current and future needs and processes – within the parameters of a tight time schedule.

Solution:III teamed with IBM Business Partner Tung-I Information Service Co. to meet the Biobank project’s needs with IBM Clinical Genomics Solution software, an integrated architecture that facilitates the identification and

TraceTracker allows province to digitally track food products through supply chain A Green and Beyond and New Intelligence solution

Industry: Government, Consumer Products n IBM Business Partner: TraceTracker

Business Need:Before livestock becomes dinner there is a huge, and increasingly complex, agricultural food chain through which it travels. The feed ingredients for pork and beef come from many different source products and feed inputs. Processing beef and pork can involve multiple locales or organizations from birth farms and abattoirs to distribution centers and retailers including grocery stores and restaurants. With food safety concerns on the rise, the Province of Manitoba, as one of Canada’s largest pork producers and third largest cattle producer, realized it needed a better way to track and trace its food products from farm to fork.

Solution:The Province of Manitoba and IBM Global Services worked together to successfully test an information management and tracking system that could provide the blueprint for a national agri-food traceability network. Using Global Traceability Network (GTNet) software from IBM Business Partner TraceTracker – which allows trading partners to exchange critical product information, the province was able to digitally track food products as they moved through the supply chain.

BP Information:TraceTracker is a leading provider of global traceability solutions, delivered through a unique platform, innovative software applications and professional services.

U.S. Department of State – Pakistan Telemedicine Project A New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Government n IBM Business Partners: MedWeb, Motorola and Wateen

Business Need:Pakistan has almost 179 million people. More than 75 percent live in remote villages with access to fewer than 15 percent of all hospital beds in the country. There are no radiologists, pathologists, dermatologists or many other specialists. If a villager needs additional care, he or she often cannot afford the trip to the larger hospital in Rawalpindi.

Solution:IBM Global Business Services is working with the U.S. State Department and other public and private organiza-tions on a telemedicine project that has enabled medical specialists to treat patients in remote, medically under-served areas of northern Pakistan, some of whom have suffered for years with easily treatable diseases.

Using WiMAX wireless broadband technology, videocon-ferencing, and the Internet, the Pakistan Telemedicine Project has connected a central coordinating facility at the Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, with a spoke hospital in District Attock, a rural area with few doctors and a limited supply of medical resources. Doctors in Rawalpindi, armed with personal comput-ers and videoconferencing equipment, ‘see’ patients remotely and confer with their counterparts at the dis-trict hospital. Medical records and information, including digital photos of skin lesions, for example, are shared

via a wireless network provided by Motorola and Wateen Telecom and navigated with Medweb software.

BP Information:MedWeb is an independent software vendor and solution provider; Motorola is a solution provider; and Wateen, is a regional independent software vendor and solution provider.

DSS helps GSMS create competitive advantage with top “pedigree” IBM solution A Dynamic Infrastructure and New Intelligence solution Industry: Healthcare, Wholesale Distribution & Services, Life SciencesIBM Business Partner: Direct Systems Support

Business Need:Formerly Golden State Medical Supply, GSMS is a wholesale pharmaceuticals distributor, contract manufac-turer and packaging company headquartered in California. It serves city, state and federal pharmaceutical needs in public and private hospitals and mail-order pharmacies. The company needed to comply with first-of-kind drug pedigree requirements set forth by the California Board of Pharmacy, which takes aim at reducing and eliminating drug counterfeiting and tampering.

New regulations require all prescription products to be serialized – identified – down to the individual item. Each item’s pedigree – or chain of custody – also must be validated before the product can be received by or distributed to any other party. GSMS sought to differentiate its services and gain an advantage by implementing an innovative solution to meet pedigree compliance ahead of the competition.

Solution:GSMS evaluated services and offerings from both IBM and pedigree application vendors. It chose IBM to deliver the design for a pharmaceutical tracing infrastructure. All software will be hosted on IBM System x servers, which will be provided by IBM Business Partner Direct Systems Support. The IBM Solution for Pharmaceutical Track & Trace helps protect the integrity of individual pharmaceutical

products and helps improve patient safety. The IBM offering provides a one-stop-shop for unique identification – or serialization – of pharmaceutical products. The solution includes strategy services, software and middle-ware, servers, and deployment and integration services.

BP Information:Utilizing world-class IBM server, storage, and software technologies, Direct Systems Support, Inc. provides innovative IT solutions that promote more effective and manageable business practices.

Region medical center deploys electronic medical records solution from BlueWareA New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Healthcare n IBM Business Partner: BlueWare

Business Need:The organization, a regional medical center, wanted to improve the quality of care that it could deliver to its patients. Patient records were stored in paper form and spread throughout the hospital and its affiliates. Because these records were widely distributed, hospital staff could not easily compile all of the pertinent information regarding a patient, the process sometimes taking days. These inefficiencies resulted in delays to treatment and forced medical personnel to make decisions without all of the available information.

Solution:Taking advantage of the expertise and technology of IBM and IBM Business Partner BlueWare, Inc., the organiza-tion secured an electronic medical records solution that provides real-time access to a patient’s complete medical record. The hospital’s over 1,000 physicians can now pull up medical information from multiple systems, including diagnostic imaging, lab results, electrocardio-grams, nursing notes and outpatient records. And the new solution offers business intelligence functionality that lets staff gain new insight into patient health.

BP Information:BlueWare is an international software corporation dedicated to the healthcare industry.

Xicheng District Health Bureau unifies its healthcare management system with help from Yuxin Company A New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Healthcare n IBM Business Partner: Yuxin Company

Business Need:Hospitals and community centers in the Xicheng District Health Bureau have many disparate systems, each collecting and using patient information in its own way. The bureau needed to deliver a unified healthcare management system that included a single, compre-hensive electronic medical record (EMR) to facilitate the exchange and sharing of medical information among health service providers. However, XDHB’s previous healthcare management system was based on a major non-DB2 database and lacked the flexibility to integrate the disparate and hierarchical medical information within the districts’ heterogeneous systems. The bureau wanted to replace this environment with a service ori-ented architecture (SOA) platform that would consolidate patient data from all providers and establish a process for all providers to share information across the network.

Solution:Given the bureau’s widely disparate systems and lack of standards at the outset, SOA made sense as a strategy for integrating systems and sharing data. SOA would enable the Bureau to establish a standards-based approach to consolidating all patient information into a

single EMR. Specifically, XDHB chose IBM DB2 pure XML technology to achieve a flexible infrastructure. It also chose the IBM WebSphere DataPower Integration Appliance XI50 to increase the efficiency of XML data transformation and exchange.

BP Information:Yuxin Company is an Independent Software Vendor.

Lloyds deploys price optimization solution with help from IBM and Earnix A New Intelligence solution

Industry: Insurance n IBM Business Partner: Earnix

Business Need:Recognizing an opportunity to strengthen its competitive standing, Lloyds TSB Insurance (Lloyds) wished to employ a price optimization program. Unfortunately, the organization’s legacy infrastructure was unable to support the intense modeling demands of such a pricing strategy. In fact, the limitations of the insurer’s existing systems were already causing delays in price updates under the existing plan let alone under a more dynamic structure. Beyond attracting customers with competi-tive pricing, Lloyds hoped that by overhauling its pricing processes it would be able to better react to shifting market trends. Furthermore, the business would be able to use such a tool to mine its customer interactions to better anticipate the requirements and expectations of policyholders.

Solution:Working with IBM and IBM Business Partner Earnix, Inc., Lloyds deployed a price optimization and simulation tool that helps the business anticipate the possible reactions of customers to various marketplace factors. The new solution leverages complex mathematical

models that pull data from the client’s legacy systems to determine how customer demand will vary at different price levels by comparing costs, actuary data and other factors. At the same time, the business can also mine information from its customer relationship management systems to model customer satisfaction levels and identify policyholders likely to cancel their coverage.

BP Information:Using Earnix, providers of insurance and banking ser-vices are able to analyze and predict customer preferences, serving each customer with targeted offers and optimized price options.

Putting a premium on business flexibility by redesigning core processesA Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Insurance, Healthcare n IBM Business Partner: Oracle

Business Need:Groupe Mutuel, a provider of health and life insurance, has emerged as one of the market’s most successful insurers. Based in Martigny, Groupe Mutuel has grown by a factor of 10 over the past decade, becoming the number two health insurance provider in Switzerland with more than a million members. To achieve its goal of becoming number one in the Swiss health insurance market, Groupe Mutuel needed to become more flexible and cost efficient while also improving the quality and timeliness of the services it could provide to its customers – but without changing the decentralized structure that is a pillar of its business model.

Solution:Groupe Mutuel teamed with IBM Global Business Services to design a new back-office system based on a software platform from IBM Business Partner Oracle. More specifically, the organization migrated its financial operations (ranging from general accounting to cash management) to Oracle E-business Suite software. At the same time, the business implemented Oracle People-Soft Human Resources software to manage not only its internal processes but to also manage the employee information and associated insurance data of its custom-ers. After the software had been deployed, the IBM Global Business Services team worked with the

client to optimize the Oracle software, integrating it with the organization’s larger environment, including its Web environment. Presently, Groupe Mutuel staff can now access the Oracle PeopleSoft systems through internal Web portals, and the business is presently researching extending this capability to its customers as well.

BP Information:Oracle is one of the world’s largest business software companies.

Silvermoon Group helps South African insurer speed new offerings to marketA Dynamic Infrastructure and Smart Work solution Industry: Insurance n IBM Business Partner: Silvermoon Group

Business Need:The Professional Provident Society (PPS), a leading South African provider of specialized insurance services for professionals, wanted to improve its ability to bring new products to market in order to respond to changing customer demands and stiffening competition. The inherent nature of legacy systems had made application and product development complex, costly and fraught with risk. As a result, it took years to introduce new products into the marketplace.

Solution:Working in close collaboration with IBM Business Partner Silvermoon Group, PPS replaced all of its legacy systems with a completely new, modular application infrastructure based on the principles of the IBM Insurance Application Architecture (IAA). This was the first end-to-end implementation of IAA in the South African market. The common IAA-based platform unified several previously disparate policy systems and dramatically improved speed to market, enabling the company to leap far ahead of its competition with an unprecedented rate of new product introductions.

BP Information:Silvermoon Business Systems is an international software company focused on the delivery and implementation of its unique enterprise-level insurance system components.

Dittrich and Partner Consulting scores goal with sports statistician in EuropeA Smart Work and New Intelligence Solution Industry: Media and entertainment n IBM Business Partner: Dittrich and Partner Consulting

Business Need:Headquartered in Germany, IMPIRE AG provides sports statistics, television graphics, 3-D animations and more to German-language-based television broadcast-ers, Web sites and print media. The core of IMPIRE’s business is providing real-time updates and statistics for live hockey and soccer games to media broadcasters across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With tech-nological resources available that could enhance and even revolutionize its business, the company sought to obtain IT solutions that could help it develop innovative products and offer its customer base unique new experiences.

Solution:With assistance from IBM Business Partner Dittrich and Partner Consulting, IMPIRE implemented an IBM solution that dynamically and rapidly generates new statistical information. Leveraging IBM technology, the client manages and monitors individual sporting event data — such as goals scored and free kicks in soccer — to be evaluated and published during each game. The client now offers its services, such as its Web-based sports ticker, which communicates real-time event data and statistics to consumers more quickly than even a live broadcast. And with the IBM solution, IMPIRE can now integrate and analyze historical game data and current data — almost as it happens — in near real time,

providing dedicated sports fans with a deeper under-standing of the game. The “mix-and-match” data is available only from IMPIRE, giving the client a strong competitive advantage.

Embracing supplier collaboration to streamline processes A Dynamic Infrastructure and Smart Work solution

Industry: Retail n IBM Business Partner: eFuture Information Technology Inc.

Business Need:In order to maintain its market leadership position, Chinese retailer Yansha needed to increase its competitiveness against both local retailers and new foreign competitors in an increasingly deregulated Chinese retail industry. Yansha saw that the best way forward was to transform the way it does business with its supply chain partners through the adoption of new business processes, automation and business intelligence.

Solution:To transform its processes for more informed decision-making, Yansha worked with the IBM China Research Lab (CRL) and IBM Business Partner eFuture to develop Blue Engine, a process-driven SCM platform built specifically for the retailer. This first-of-its-kind supply chain management (SCM) platform leverages a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to integrate enter-prise resource planning (ERP) and SCM applications. The platform enables Yansha and its suppliers to lever-age new real-time performance information to provide transparency into supply chain business processes and generate actionable business intelligence, setting new standards of efficiency.

BP Information:eFuture Information Technology Inc., is a leading provider of software and services in China’s rapidly growing retail and consumer goods industries.

It has eight branch stores, two outlets and a sports shop in towns and villages around Munich, Germany, where the retailer sells men’s, women’s and children’s apparel as well as traditional Bavarian clothing. Restructuring checkout processes to offer a more personalized, efficient experience A New Intelligence solution

Industry: Retail n IBM Business Partner: Jantar Sp. z o.o

Business Need:Hoping to better serve its customers while increasing its sales, Spolem PSS Polnoc wanted to change the nature of how it interacted with its patrons. Namely, the business was looking to restructure its checkout processes to deliver a more personalized, efficient experience. In the past, long checkout lines were far too common at store locations, and the business wanted to provide a new way of buying for its consumers. At the same time, the company was hoping that, by interacting with its shoppers more closely, it would be able to better understand and anticipate their desires.

Solution:IBM, along with IBM Business Partner Jantar Sp. z o.o., worked with the client to deploy a self-checkout system that delivers a customized shopping experience to users while supporting business intelligence efforts by the store. As shoppers check out using these new self-service kiosks, they now scan a membership card that is tied to a unique customer profile within the client’s sales systems. The new IBM solution tracks indi-vidual buying patterns and previous purchases, enabling Spolem PSS Polnoc to send targeted marketing messages and offers directly to the consumer via the self-service kiosk. In addition, because the check-

out system is integrated with the store’s loyalty program, shoppers can earn and access rewards, resulting in discounts on current and future purchases.

BP Information:Jantar Sp. z o.o provides automatic identification solutions by relying on high-tech technologies and co-operation with market’s leaders.

Retail Anywhere sweetens success for Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory

A Dynamic Infrastructure solution Industry: Retail n IBM Business Partner: Retail Anywhere

Business Need:Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is an international franchisor, confectioner and retailer in the United States, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Focusing primarily on the production of its candies, the company directly managed only five of its stores, relying on franchise holders to control the remaining operations. Each franchise maintained independent point-of-sale (POS) systems. Sales data was transmitted back to the company’s main office via e-mail, but compiling this data in a timely, efficient manner proved challenging. By the time a usable report was available, it was out-dated. Unable to clearly see into its sales and inventory processes, the company could not accurately determine the effectiveness of its marketing efforts. And, while it could track the volumes of candies being shipped from the factory, the company could not identify sales volumes at each store, obscuring sales trends.

Solution:After considering between 25 and 30 other retail solution vendors, the client teamed with IBM Business Partner Retail Anywhere to standardize its POS systems. The new retail system was built on Retail Anywhere Point of Sale software, and it was supported by IBM SurePOS 500 Express hardware. The client now has a universal and affordable POS solution for its franchise locations.

BP Information:As a complete POS retail solutions provider, Retail Anywhere works directly with customers to deliver an integrated system with software and hardware as well as professional services to meet their individual retail requirements.

SKY IT solution gives global retailer the power to anticipate and respond to consumer demands, increasing customer satisfaction A New Intelligence solution Industry: Retail n IBM Business Partner: SKY IT Group

Business Need:Fashion designer and retailer Elie Tahari had its order, sales, inventory and financial data spread across the company, making it difficult for managers to access the inventory data they needed to make critical business decisions quickly. Managers couldn’t identify which products were in the greatest demand, which resulted in the company’s warehouses being overstocked with less popular items, while the hottest items remained on back order.

Solution:Elie Tahari worked with IBM and Sky IT Group to develop InSeam – a comprehensive reporting platform that uses a centralized data warehouse to integrate internal order, sales, inventory and financial data with external retailer data and Internet-based demographic intel-ligence. The security-rich, open platform provides high levels of reliability, performance and scalability. The real-time reporting system uses a Cognos solution to present consolidated, and customized, scorecards to users – accessible via email or the web – making crucial inventory decisions a snap.

Wir leben Apotheke gets prescription for success from IBM and ProMedisoft AG A New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Retail n IBM Business Partner: ProMedisoft AG

Business Need:Wir leben Apotheke, a chain of pharmacies in Germany, places approximately 20 percent of its open-to-sell products on sale. The assortment of products on sale changes on a twice weekly basis, meaning the company needs to re-price 40 percent of its open-to-sell products two times per week: 20 percent of the products needed to be set to the sale price and 20 percent of the products needed to be returned to regular prices. The company found that updating the price labels on its shelves was costly, highly time consuming and error prone. To simplify pricing changing, Wir leben Apotheke wanted to implement a solution that includes electronic price labels on its shelves. The new electronic price labels should be easy to change, integrate with the company’s point of sale (POS) system, enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and a back-office infrastructure, and easy to read for the company’s visually handicapped customers.

Solution:Wir leben Apotheke turned to IBM and IBM Business Partner ProMedisoft AG to assist with the implementation of an electronic shelf label (ESL) system. The ESL system enables automatic pricing updates, replacing time-consuming, manual efforts. This enables Wir leben Apotheke to run weekly or bi-weekly targeted marketing

campaigns like late night special pricing rates on par-ticular products. In addition, and of particular importance to the chain, is the fact that, if a product is out of stock in one store, customers get real time information on the second page of the intelligent electronic shelf label that informs them where the product is still available and how many of them are in stock at the company’s other stores.

Care2 reduces energy consumption with help from rs-unix A Green and Beyond solution

Industry: Telecommunications n IBM Business Partner: Rs-unix

Business Need:Founded in 1998, Care2 is a social networking Web site that enables environmental enthusiasts across the globe to connect and to share resources and information. Care2 has grown steadily, struggling to keep pace by cobbling together its IT systems to meet short-term needs. Over time, this strategy limited the organization’s growth options and wasted valuable resources. With such a distributed environment, Care2 could not effectively control its energy consumption, because its only gauge for energy usage was its power bill. And the business could not easily identify inefficient systems, which resulted in system errors or mismanaged technology that wasted electricity, increasing energy costs along with the organization’s carbon footprint. Care2 forecasted growth that would exceed its current capacities, which meant the business needed to update its systems. Recognizing that this update would be an ideal opportunity to revamp its energy policies, the organization began looking for a new operating environment that was more scalable and more environ-mentally responsible.

Solution:Working with IBM Business Partner rs-unix, Care2 implemented an energy-efficient data center solution

that includes proactive power management tools capable of controlling and even capping energy consumption. The solution offers clear insight into exist-ing energy usage levels and uses proactive monitoring alarms, which enable the organization to respond to irregularities in power consumption or wasted electricity. With energy caps in place, the organization can prevent sudden, unauthorized usage increases by malfunctioning or inefficient equipment.

Singapore Telecom deploys electronic queue management solutionA New Intelligence solution

Industry: Telecommunications n IBM Business Partner: Vintedge

Business Need:Singapore Telecommunication Limited (SingTel) had been using a stand-alone store-front queue manage-ment system from Q-matic Solutions at all of its retail outlets. However, the system lacked business process automation capabilities, such as integration with the company’s back-end and customer database systems, and offered very limited management reporting tools. In addition, the system did not allow self-service automa-tion; all queue ticketing and customer registration had to be done by SingTel staff. Furthermore, the existing system did not offer any visual interface for SingTel staff and customers. Instead, queue numbers were displayed on LED screens, which detracted from the customer in-store experience. Finally, SingTel was distributing new mobile numbers manually. This manual distribution method lacked flexibility and increased the possibility for errors. SingTel needed to replace its legacy queue man-agement system with a centralized solution that could manage its in-store queues and integrate data related to transactions, orders and mobile number distribution.

Solution:Singapore Telecommunication Limited worked with IBM Singapore to deploy an asset-based electronic queue management solution based on IBM System x hardware and IBM WebSphere software. The company engaged

IBM Global Technology Services - Integrated Technology Services to provide overall project management, as well as system and infrastructure implementation services. Vintedge was the solution provider.

BP Information:Vintedge is a leading independent full-service interactive agency in Singapore.

All Nippon Airways teams with IBS for cargo management solutionA Dynamic Infrastructure solution

Industry: Travel & Transportation n IBM Business Partner: IBS

Business Need:In 2006, ANA developed a four-year medium-term growth strategy that would enable the company to “reach the top in Asia in 2009.” One of three main points for this growth strategy called on ANA to enhance its infrastructure to promote its cargo and mail business. ANA expects its international cargo market to grow by 10-15 percent annually. However, the international cargo business requires an infrastructure that can react to an ever-changing market and meet global standards. ANA’s legacy Unisys platform, which was approaching end of service, did not offer the openness and scalability necessary.

Solution:To create its next generation international cargo system, ANA adopted iCargo, a cargo management solution from IBM Business Partner IBS. IBS also delivered consulting services for the solution. The iCargo solution runs on two IBM System p5 590 servers running the IBM AIX V5.2 operating system. One of the new System p5 servers hosts the company’s production, testing, maintenance and training environment, while the other server hosts the company’s production and maintenance environment.

ANA also implemented an IBM System Storage DS8100 storage device and an IBM System Storage DS4800 storage device to support the company’s databases. The new devices store user input data, system process data and international cargo business data.

BP Information:IBS is a leading provider of technology products and services to the travel, transportation and logistics industry.

DP World Southampton turns to SRO Solutions for asset management solutionA Dynamic Infrastructure and New Intelligence solution

Industry: Travel & Transportation n IBM Business Partner: SRO Solutions

Business Need:DP World Southampton, the second-largest container terminal in the United Kingdom, relied on a legacy computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), which was not well adapted to the company’s business processes. Because the system had never been properly configured to meet the company’s needs, staff found it difficult to intelligently manage its mainte-nance workloads. The organization wanted to confirm that it was servicing its equipment often enough to meet ISO 9001:2000 quality standards and to comply with health and safety regulations. Equally, staff found that 80 percent of its maintenance work was aimed at fixing breakdowns, rather than preventing them. Every time a crane breaks down, it slows the organization’s throughput and ultimately costs money. By becoming more proactive in its maintenance work, the organization could reduce delays and boost efficiencies.

Solution:DP World Southampton engaged IBM Business Partner SRO Solutions to deploy and configure the IBM Maximo Asset Management software. The solution provides engineering technicians with direct access to maintenance systems for the first time and enables the integrated management of its procurement and inventory systems.

Now, engineering technicians can diagnose potential problems before they occur. DP World Southampton is also planning to implement and integrate hand held devices to provide remote and real-time access to the monitoring system.

BP Information:SRO Solutions deliver leading asset management solutions, focusing on marine transportation, offshore oil and gas, and manufacturing and production.

Guangzhou Metro Corporation selects IBM technology to improve city’s rapid transit systemA Dynamic Infrastructure, Green and Beyond, New Intelligence and Smart Work solution

Industry: Travel & Transportation n IBM Business Partner: Oracle

Business Need:Guangzhou Metro Corporation (GZ Metro) has selected IBM technology and services to improve the City’s rapid transit system serving more than two million passengers a day. GZ Metro is working with IBM to introduce an Integrated Asset Management (IAM) System as part of its modernization efforts. The IAM system will be the first of its kind for China. IBM will help GZ Metro manage all of its IT and physical assets including four commuter lines, 60 stations and more than 116 kilometers of track. Solution:For the implementation of the IAM platform, IBM Global Business Services will build a uniform asset classification and coding system for all assets, as well as integrate the operational and financial management processes in investment, construction, operation and asset maintenance – throughout the entire life cycle of asset management. The system, which utilizes an Oracle database, will improve

the GZ Metro’s transparency into their operational processes, which can enhance asset-related decision-making, asset service delivery and return on investment. This will contribute to GZ Metro’s business objective of improving efficiency and increasing asset uptime.

IBM BlueSky solution helps airport set smarter fees and handling charges A Smart Work solution

Industry: Travel & Transportation n IBM Business Partner: SAP

Business Need:The Prague Airport, which served more than 12.6 million travelers in 2008, has as its goal to increase its pas-senger numbers each year. To achieve its objective of continuously expanding passenger capacity, the airport needed a better, more flexible way to set airport and handling fees for its customers, the airlines. The airport intended to increase its business revenue by creating a flexible incentive program to attract new customers and retain its current ones. To do this, the airport needed an integrated information management system that could consolidate relevant data such as passenger num-bers, peak and lull times, numbers and types of planes. Prague Airport then needed to apply that data to gener-ate a fee structure that would both generate increased revenue for the airport and encourage the airlines to use it instead of a competing airport in the region.

Solution:IBM signed an implementation and four-year services contract to deliver IBM BlueSky, a specialized information integration system. IBM BlueSky unifies airport operation-al data and then uses advanced algorithms and simulations to calculate various airport and handling fees. It provides managers on all levels with the ability to quickly and easily access the operational data and statistics via the Airport Operational Database

(AODB), all in real time. IBM BlueSky enables the airport to collect and analyze information that it previously could not integrate to set the most suitable strategy for the calculation of airport fees and handling charges. IBM BlueSky serves as an integrated add-on to the airport’s SAP suite of applications, recognizing this as a core business function for the airport.

BP Information:SAP is one of the world’s leading providers of business software.

Success takes flight in American Airlines HR with IBM solution delivered by Mercer A Smart Work solution

Industry: Travel & Transportation n IBM Business Partner: Mercer

Business Need:American Airlines had developed a number of in-house tools to support its human resources (HR) processes, and while these systems had performed admirably for a number of years, the organization was looking to replace them. As business needs increased and shifted, the company witnessed a slowdown in the functionality of the systems. And as technology advanced, American was forced to invest more time and money into updating and optimizing these internally developed systems. As a result, American began to evaluate whether it wanted to keep management and design of these systems internal or if it wanted to find outside support.

Solution:Deciding to outsource its HR operations, American turned to IBM Global Services and IBM Business Partner Mercer to overhaul its existing system. The joint IBM and Mercer team designed a new HR platform that offers around-the-clock service and support to American employees worldwide.

BP Information:Mercer is the global leader for trusted HR and related financial advice, products and services.
