A smart solution that makes saving energy simple

SMARTAIRFLOW™ SYSTEM AT A gLAncE:

• Available on 3- to 5-ton high-efficiency Energence® rooftop units

Industry's first factory-installed option that prevents overventilation,

saving annual ventilation energy consumption by an average of 35%*

• Works with the Prodigy® Control System to allow adjustment

of airflow settings with a resolution down to 3 CFM

• May qualify for LEED® code IEQ C1 outdoor air delivery monitoring

• Compatible with optional BACnet and LonTalk® modules to facilitate

greater building automation and monitoring

• Provides five independent, adjustable-supply airflow settings

• Auto-calibration ensures rooftop unit is configured

within 24 hours

Intelligence is engineered into every Energence® packaged rooftop unit, and our new sensor-based system makes these

units an even smarter choice for high-efficiency comfort. Available as a factory-installed option, the SmartAirflow™ system

can save an average of 35%* of annual ventilation energy consumption compared to traditional units.

* As compared to uncalibrated parallel-blade-design dampers without the SmartAirflow System on a traditional 4-ton rooftop unit delivering 1,600 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of supply airflow with 15% outside air requirements where economizer minimum position is set at 15% damper position. Average of cities in ASHRAE climate zones 1-6. Savings will vary with each zone.

Precisely what’s needed for optimal performance

Fresh air ventilation is not only required by building codes, but also helps ensure the comfort of building occupants. SmartAirflow works with an economizer and Prodigy® Control System to accurately manage this critical function.

An economizer is a mechanical damper that allows rooftop units to use outside air to provide ventilation to the building as well as use outside air for cooling when the temperature is suitable. On its own, the economizer operates on an on/off basis, depending on user input at initial installation/setup. However, when the Energence unit with the standard Prodigy Control System is configured with SmartAirflow, the economizer can operate intelligently and more efficiently. Dampers are adjusted continuously throughout the day based on how much ventilation is needed inside the building and the equipment's operating mode.

Data based on 4-ton Energence® rooftop unit and TMY (typical meteorological year) data. Map based on U.S. Department of Energy zones.*Based on 15% outdoor air amount (240 CFM). Electric cost $0.11 per kwh. Natural gas cost of $0.85 per therm.

By making adjustments to the economizer throughout the day, SmartAirflow™ keeps the unit from working overtime to compensate for excessive hot air entering the building during summer, or cold air during the winter. In addition, if the economizer is not providing the right amount of airflow and the damper is stuck fully opened or fully closed, SmartAirflow is able to detect this is improper equipment operation. SmartAirflow will send an alert to notify the operator and the monitoring system so that corrective action can be taken. This

critical function can help minimize energy losses and ensure occupant comfort.

SmartAirflow also allows the supply blower's operating modes to be set to five independent adjustable settings. This function helps increase system efficiency and energy savings by allowing the lowering of airflow for modes where higher speeds are not needed, such as ventilation mode.

Annual Energy Cost of Inaccurate VentilationTypical buildings require ventilation rates equal to 10% to 30% of the total system airflow to provide adequate amounts of fresh air based on building occupancy levels. For a 4-ton rooftop unit supplying air at a rate of 1,600 CFM, between 160 and 480 CFM of outside air must be delivered to occupied spaces. If overventilation occurs during this process, energy is lost.

Factors that can contribute to overventilation include improper equipment setup and inadequate maintenance and monitoring.

Since more than one of these factors may exist with any given rooftop unit installation, energy losses and resulting costs can be substantial.

The table below demonstrates potential losses at different overventilation rates. The overventilation rate is the amount of excess air brought into the building in addition to the required amount per building design.

Proper verification for peace of mind

Many rooftop units are improperly calibrated for the airflow needs of the buildings they heat and cool—or not even

calibrated at all. This negatively impacts both efficiency and comfort.

System monitoring and continuous verification

The Energence® rooftop unit with SmartAirflow™ system continuously monitors the amount of both supply and outside airflows, allowing you to verify proper setup and equipment operation. Plus, system alarms enable the customization of warning levels to indicate any operational issues. When coupled with Prodigy's BACnet or LonTalk® modules, SmartAirflow’s monitoring capabilities can also be integrated with the Building Automation System for maximum convenience and control.

Enhanced IAQ and comfort

Poor indoor air quality can lower productivity, turn away customers and even increase absenteeism rates.** By precisely controlling the amount of fresh air that enters the building, SmartAirflow ensures the building is properly ventilated and perfectly comfortable. Customizable alerts let you know if the system detects inadequate outside air entering the building. Furthermore, the system will detect if inadequate airflow is supplied by the rooftop unit to the building.

Simplified installation, faster service

Detailed data that lets you make the best decisions

When combined with the SmartAirflow system, the Prodigy® patent-pending USB service report expands by giving you detailed airflow system information. This allows you to take any necessary corrective action, reducing maintenance expenses and costly repairs.

The SmartAirflow data in the Prodigy USB service report:

• Saves all critical airflow data in a convenient downloadable summary that includes:

– Calibration date and time

– Supply and outside airflow data

– Airflow-related diagnostic codes

• Makes service easier by pinpointing loss-of-airflow conditions

• Allows verification of calibration settings to ensure proper installation

• Allows trending of service and unit operation over time with time/date stamped airflow reports.

Supply Air

With the SmartAirflow system, you can simply enter the supply airflow in CFM, push a button, and the unit will calibrate in just minutes. To further reduce installation time, it will also allow you to specify different speeds for each of the supply blower’s operating modes.

Outside Air

SmartAirflow eliminates the need to use airflow measurement tools and set cumbersome potentiometers or multiple economizer settings for different operating modes. A single outside airflow setting in CFM ensures the same amount of air is delivered regardless of operating mode, significantly reducing installation and setup time.

To calibrate the unit, select from five adjustable blower settings in the Prodigy® Control System, and enter your airflow amount to the nearest 3 CFM.

By entering the CFM value for outdoor airflow instead of a percentage, economizer operation is more accurate and efficient. SmartAirflow continuously adjusts the damper position to ensure the desired amount of outside airflow is entering the building.

SmartAirflow™ takes the guessing game out of airflow setup. Installation can be done with a few button presses and

calibration is guaranteed. If a unit is not calibrated, the SmartAirflow system will auto-calibrate within 24 hours of initial

startup, loading the appropriate airflow settings based on unit size.
