Sodick has launched a brand new Premium Wire-Cut EDM Series the SLC400G and SLC600G.Based on the latest digital innovations in generator technologies, the new SL Premium range demonstrates considerable advances in cutting speed, accuracy and surface fi nish. This achievement was made possible through 15 years of Sodick Linear Technology.

The Smart Pulse Generator drastically reduces the number of cuts necessary to achieve the required accuracy and surface fi nish, compared with conventional machines. This reduction in time translates directly into fi nancial advantages.

To capitalise on the advances of the digital Smart Pulse generator and Sodick’s linear motor system, a new mechanical design was required. This new design resulted in a compact and fully enclosed machine tool which furthermore uses the latest human interface with a 19-inch touch screen control. This new large TFT colour screen allows operation similar to smart phone and tablets.

Integration of Sodick‘s linear EDM experience and know-how perfected over 15 years with the latest technologies available.

A discharge power supply unit that has the fl exibility to control from high peak current for rough machining to ultrafi ne discharge pulse for superfi ne fi nish machining. A dramatically increased cutting speed and various newly developed circuits including, “Digital PIKA Circuit”, improves fi nish machining surface quality, and contributes to performance improvement in every processing fi eld.

It is more than 15 years since the fi rst of Sodick's In-House developed and manufactured linear driven systems were introduced to the market. Since then over 35,000 machines have been delivered globally thanks to their long-term reliability and performance.

By adopting the linear motor drive system, an array of applications previously deemed impossible with conventional ball-screw driven systems have been made possible by Sodick Wire EDM. Throughout machine life, accuracy will not diminish over time, and initial machine accuracy is maintained.

Core Technology

Linear Motor Driven on the X, Y, U and V Axes: StandardThe Axis movement performance with a Ball-Screw Drive system will deteriorate over time because of lost-motion due to mechanical backlash, whist a Linear motor Drive delivers smooth backlash-free movement. Its simple non-contact structure does not suffer from mechanical wear or deterioration. The initial accuracy of the Direct Linear Drive is maintained over a long productive period without the need for expensive maintenance.

The linear motor drive system is cleverly designed to operate for many years trouble-free and used in conjunction with an absolute linear scale by Heidenhain. With excellent position detection performance and stability, the absolute linear scale has a resolution of 0.01µm.

Sodick’s NC UnitA built-in artifi cial intelligence is combined with state-of-the-art electric-discharge machining technologies, which precisely controls the drive system through the K-SMC and the electric discharge power supply.

Sodick Motion ControllerThe Sodick Motion Controller accurately controls the high-speed and precise linear motor drive movements with commands from the NC unit. It accurately controls the rapid acceleration and precise positioning required for electric discharge machining.

High Rigidity Machine Structure that only Sodick can achieveCeramics manufactured in-house with an extremely low length variation against temperature change (linear expansion coeffi cient) are used for critical parts of the machine. Excellent repeatability has been achieved due to optimum design for the casting structure. In addition the thermal changes within the machine structure are monitored, controlled and minimized, thus ensuring a stable machine environment.

Brand New Automatic Wire ThreaderThe wire straightening method of annealing which incorporates a tip treatment unit, this wire threader demonstrates a high threading rate regardless of being in air or submerged in water. It enables continuous threading even under diffi cult conditions such as threading in small diameter holes, special shape holes, etc.

Furthermore automatic wire threading benefi ts from a Pop-Up Retry search function which automatically seeks out the start hole, this function aids unattended machining and automation, thus improving productivity.

New Wire Tension Servo FunctionNew wire tension servo function is used to optimize the wire tension. The advanced tension detection ensures high-speed and high-precision machining.

The SL Premium series features number of new in-house developed innovations in the machine generator to realize even better speed, surface fi nish and accuracy.

Premium Features

TMP ControlThe “TMP control” improves the 2-cut technology; it improves cutting speed, surface fi nish and geometric accuracy and minimizes the adhesion of brass wire onto the workpiece surface after the 2nd cut, which is effective for parts manufacturing. The reduction of required number of cuts results in quicker operation time.

Intelligent Q3vic EDWIntelligent Q3vic EDW is standard with SL Premium series and Premium Plus series. This automatic programming system detects area of a workpiece that can be machined with Wire-EDM and extract the machining contour at a time. Drastic reduction of man-hour is possible thanks to the function that extracts a machining contour of even a complicated shape with only one command.

Complex Geometry MachiningSodick’s DSF (Dynamic Shape Fast) automatically detects the thickness of workpiece and calculates the optimum machining settings from rough machining to fi nishing for every thickness, avoiding wire breakage. The DSF ensures even more stability, better speed and higher accuracy for the machining of workpieces with stepped or irregular geometry.

Digital PIKA W PlusSodick’s new innovation “Digital PIKA W Plus” circuit further improves both the cutting speed and stability of fi nish machining. The best surface roughness can also be achieved by extremely high frequency (EHF) machining.

Key Features19-inch TFT Touch Screen An enhanced 19-inch TFT multi touch screen can be operated like a tablet. The operation screen can be selected between the traditional screen and the new tablet-type screen. Furthermore the screen layouts can be customized by the operator to suit their working preferences. External keyboard is available for even better ergonomics and operability.

Optional Items Taperfl ex Neo 45Taperfl ex Neo 45 is available as an option for accurate large angular machining up to 45°� Taper Flex Neo 45 is easy to use and requires no special training. The option consists of three parts: High Angle Guides, a Calibration Jig and Software.

WS-4P/5PSodick’s own Rotary Table developed In-house is available as an additional A or B axis for indexing or simultaneous contouring.

L-Cut (wire chopper)The ejected wire is chopped into small pieces for easy disposal.

Multi-Axis CapabilitySodick’s “SPW-E” Power supply Control is capable of controlling up to 8-Axis simultaneously. The Multi Axis Control is available as a factory-fi t option.

0.05 wire AWTAutomatic wire threading for thin wire (ø0.07 and 0.05mm) is available as an option. HTP circuit is also included to apply a higher voltage.

ANCS (Anti Corrosion System)The ANCS prevents rust, corrosion and discoloration on workpieces electrically and chemically while they are being machined or left in the dielectric. This advanced rust-free system is effective for steel, carbide and alloys.
