2.4 Intended use

The device is intended for driving of integrated-electrooptic waveguide modulators (EOM). The modulators must be provided with separate inputs for the RF (input impedance 50 Ω) and for bias (high-ohmic). The half wave voltage (Vπ) for both inputs must be lower than 5.5 V.

For use of the automatic operation point control the modulator must be provided with an optical, FC-connectorized monitoring fiber at the output. For this a fiber coupler can be used which guides a part of the output light (5 - 10 %) to the feed-back loop. Since an InGaAs-photodiode is built in the wavelength can be between 1000 nm and 1700 nm.

Please store the manual near to the device and accessible for all users. Furthermore, please take care that all necessary documents like laser safety regulations or country-specific safety regulations are present.

3.1 General

The SmartPicker is characterized by:

- Automatic working point stabilization - Build in photodiode - EOM-RF up to 5.5Vpp - EOM-DC OUT ±10V - Synchronize up to 200MHz - Stable EMC shielded aluminium case - Integrated USB port - Independent tunable RF- and DC-amplitudes - Automatic operation point stabilization (optical feed-back loop input) for drift compensation - Trigger-Level input down to 50mV - TTL monitor output - Variable delay in the range 0 ns ... 1 ms - Variable pulse width in the range 4 ns ... 1 ms

The device is intended for use as table top device. It must be used in horizontal position. Please protect it against shifting.

3.2 RF-output (RF-OUT)

Output

Connector: SMA(f) Voltage: 0…5.5 V amplitude (square wave) Current: ± 100 mA TRise / TFall: < 5 ns

An integrated-optical amplitude modulator (EOM) needs voltage pulses typically in the 3…5 V range for switching between the off and on states (half wave voltage, π-voltage, Vπ). The exact value is given in the data sheet of the EOM

The SmartPicker EOM is able to deliver voltage pulses of a settable amplitude in the range between 0…5.5 V which corresponds to the modulators half wave voltage.

The RF-output is optimized for an output impedance of 50 Ω. A mismatch may lead to output voltages up to -15…+15 V. Shortening the output may lead to irreparable device damage.

The RF-output is optimized for an output impedance of 50 Ω. For other output impedance values the voltages are not correct.

In manual operation, the RF- and DC-output voltages can be set by software commands. All parameters can be set. The parameters are written at the modulators data sheet.

Page 9: SMART PICKER SERIES EOM - optoscience.com · The EOM-monitor output needs to be connected to 50 Ohms to get the correct amplitude and to avoid reflections. Manual SmartPicker EOM

3.3 DC – output (DC-OUT)

Output

Connector: SMA(f) Voltage: -10…10 V DC Current: ±10 mA

The DC voltage for the modulators operation point setting (biasing) can be set in the -10…10 V range. The DC value may vary depending on the operation data of the EOM with time and with the specific data of the certain EOM.

The DC-output is optimized for a high-resistance load. For other loads, the voltages are not correct.

The SmartPicker EOM can deliver the DC voltage (bias) for operation point setting. The DC voltage can be either fixed or variable by use of a feed-back loop for automatic operation point control and optimization

The SmartPicker EOM can compensate a bias drift of the modulator. The initially set operation point will be kept automatically if the division factor is large enough after activation of the automatic mode.

For this an adequate optical signal level difference between the modulators on- and off-states is necessary.

The SmartPicker EOM varies the DC output voltage starting from an initially given operation point and measures and evaluates the resulting optical signal change at the optical input PD-MON. If a lower optical input signal in the modulators off-state is achieved this DC voltage is taken as new operation point and the DC voltage is varied further in this direction. If the optical input signal is higher than the initial value the change will not be taken and the previous operation point is used further.

Using this self-optimizing algorithm, a low optical signal level is held which corresponds to a high contrast ratio of the modulator output.

3.4 PD-MON

Input (optical)

Connector: FC-receptacle Optical input power: 0…10 mW Required fiber connector: FC Frequency: >1 GHz

The optical input is needed for automatic optimizing of the operation point. The signal is averaged and integrated by a low-pass filter. The value is measured and lowered or held at minimum if the automatic operation is activated.

3.5 Trigger input (TRIGGER-IN)

Input

Connector: SMA(f) Voltage: TTL/LVTTL Frequency: < 100 MHz Input impedance: 50 Ω Minimum pulse width: 10 ns

A rising voltage edge at the Trigger input increases a counter until a software pre-set value is reached. Then a voltage pulse is emitted at the RF-output. The RF-output pulse will have the pulse width, delay and amplitude which was pre-set using the software. The counter will be set back and counts again following the next Trigger input pulses. The Trigger input pulses must be obtained by the laser pulses.

3.6 Mains

Input

Connector: DC-PLUG 2,5mm Voltage: 24VDC Current: 2 A max.

Use only the delivered power supply. The supplied mains cable with an IEC 60320 C13 connector or an identical one must be used. It can be custom- or country specific.

3.7 USB-Connection

Please use a standard USB A-B cable for connecting the device with a PC. The installation of the needed drivers takes place automatically in most cases. More details can be read in chapter 4.3.

3.8 EOM – monitor

Output

Connector: SMA(f) Voltage: TTL (0…5 V) Current: ±50 mA TRise / TFall: < 1 ns

The EOM-monitor output serves as synchronous output to the RF-OUT signal. It can be used for control purposes or to trigger subsequent devices. The EOM-monitor output needs to be connected to 50 Ohms to get the correct amplitude and to avoid reflections.

4.3 Installation of software drivers

A virtual COM-port driver is needed for the communication via USB. For systems of Microsoft Windows 7 or higher the driver installs automatically if the PC is connected with the Internet. To do this you must only connect the USB-cable. The driver installs automatically. It is not necessary to switch the SmartPicker EOM on. This process can take some time.

For all other systems the drivers must be downloaded from the website of the driver manufacturer: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm . Please connect the USB cable after the drivers installation.

A new COM-port is displayed in the device manager of your system after successful installation.

You may need administrator rights to install the necessary software drivers on your PC depending on the operating system. Please contact your IT-service.

4.4 Operation principle of the SmartPicker EOM

The SmartPicker is controlled by software commands.

To use the SmartPicker you need a free USB port and a terminal program.

The settings in the terminal program are:

COM port: see the PC´s device manager Baud: 57600 Baud Number of Bits: 8 Stop-bit: 1 Parity: no Flow Control: no

A detailed description of the commands and values can be found in chapter 6.2.

4.5 Operation modes

Manual mode:

The values for the RF amplitude (Vπ) and DC-amplitude (bias) are set by software commands. All parameters can be set.

The operation point can be set in knowledge of Vπ and bias of the EOM. This operation point is fixed.

Automatic mode:

The automatic mode is recommended for long-time experiments or use with enhanced requirements on signal stability. The automatic mode uses a photodiode which must be fed by a part of the light which is emitted by the EOM thus creating a feed-back loop. Please contact the manufacturer of the EOM if an automatic drift compensation is necessary.

A photo diode is integrated in the device. Please respect its maximum optical power of 10 mW. Overload leads to damage of the photo diode.

The automatic mode will be activated by a software command and indicated by a LED at the front panel.
