His academic careerhas co-existed alongside underground activities as a saxophonist, jazz journalist, anobituary writer for the Guardian, researcher for the Arts Council, editor and publisher of Radical Poetics,and producer of poetry CDs and arts documentaries for Channel 4 TV in England.

Through the art of streetdance and multimedia theater performance, thiscompany blurs the linesbetween the past and present with its vibrantinterpretation of The Epic of Gilgamesh.Ten dancersportray key characters fromthis ancient Mesopotamian poem, which follows KingGilgamesh as he struggles to reconcile with mortality and understand the meaning of life. Divided into elevenchapters that correspond to the clay tablets from the original poem, Illuminated Manuscript features a fusion of dance genres in its collaborative “urban street”choreography, with graffiti art video projections of original artwork by one of the troupe’s dancers. Itreclaims hip-hop by expanding the idiom.
