Films that I am interested in..

Overall the films that I am interested in our about troubled young people and the tragedy the can face. I would like to link in social issues and ethnicity to my research.

Auteurs What I have found is that the films in which I have short listed have connections through directors. The two films that I will be basing my work on our “Lords of Dogtown” and “Thirteen”, both of which are films by the director Catherine Hardwicke.

Catherine Hardwicke

I thought I could delve in to her work about troubled youngsters. How it links well to social problems and ethnicity. The inspiration behind her films. She bases these two films in California, the states gang culture and mixed ethnic society come in to these films a lot. Displaying just how teenagers can be bad influences on each other and matters such as school are ignored and replaced by drugs and under aged sex.

Social and political I thought about delving in to other countries and comparing how teenagers from the western world think there lives are bad. Then comparing them to the lives of teenagers from places such as Iran. I thought of comparing the two films “Persepolis” and one of the American films perhaps “Thirteen”. As both films focus on one girl, her life and the people around her.Or perhaps looking at British films such as “This is England”. Overall..

The youth of countries and how the variousdifferent governments try to lead and deal with them. How the abandoned youthsurvive, in their "worlds". How teenagers can be wrongfully depicted, or just perhaps stereotyped in general by thegovernment, media and generalpublic.

EthnicityMulti-cultural societies how every one can co-exist with one another, how it is portrayed in films and what problems can arise from multi-cultural societies. How we all influence each other, teach each other or cultures and our cultural differences.

The main films I that will look at here are, “Black and White”, “Lords of Dogtown” and“Thirteen”. All of the films display ethnicity issues throughout, whether all of theYoungsters get along and how they take pieces of each others cultures. How they have Influenced each other badly or whether the youngsters want to live under a new culture but not for the right reasons. “Black and White” explores the white and black races and how Some teenagers switch between the two races, to either be “cool” or for safety andprotection. I would like to explore why they do this and different aspects to all of the Cultures such as gangs, violence, drugs and divisions due to stereotypes.

An Overview.. So basically thought over it and I want to look in to social and political issues and ethnicity. I would primarily like to focus on the three films “Black and White”, “Thirteen” and “Lords of Dogtown”. With an optional fourth film, just incase I want to further my points. Whilst thinking it through I am rather interested in comparing two countries films and their troubled youth. Dissecting real issues from just plain teenaged issues interests me as in “Persepolis” her country is at war and has severe issues. Whereas the youth of the western worlds issues tends to be mentally and derives from paranoia, bullying and being self conscious. What I’d research..America and what their youths issues derive from, how their parents and government can be deemed useless to them. Drug issues, gangs and societies rejection and stereotyping of them. I’d like to look in to the film “Basketball Diaries” as the film has been suggested to me. Depending on whether I choose to look in to other countries I might research cultural, religious differences and wars in other countries.
