SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS

BASIC PRINCIPLE OF SMA

Shape memory alloys are alloys that change their shape from its original shape to a new shape and while heating / cooling it will return to its original shape

TRANSFORMATION TEMPERATURE

• The range of temperature at which the SMA switches from a new shape to its original shape is called Transformation temperature or Memory Transfer temperature

PHASES(STRUCTURES) OF SMA

• Martensite• Austenite

PROCESSING OFSMA

• Shape memory Effect: It is very clear that at lower temperature the SMA will be in Martensite structure and when it is heated then it will change its shape to Austenite structure and while cooling it will again return to its Martensite form . This effect is called SHAPE MEMORY EFFECT

Characteristics of SMA

Page 19: Sma

PSEUDO ELASTICITY

• Pseudo elasticity occur in some type of SMA in which the change in shape will occur even without change in its temperature

SUPER-ELASTICITY

• The SMA which have change in its shape at a constant temperature are called Super-elastic SMAs and that effect is known as Super-elasticity.

TYPES OF SMA

• ONE WAY SMA • TWO WAY SMA

Page 25: Sma

• Though there is some change in its temperature , the SMA retains in the same phase , and this type of material is called ONE WAY SMA

• The type of materials which produces spontaneous and reversible deformation just upon heating and cooling even without load are called TWO WAY SMA
