• The 2009 Hit film “Slumdog Millionaire” made millions of dollars and won academy awards and was one of the most successful movies of the year. Some of the children that acted in it were actually from Indian slums and they got a chance to experience the life of a movie star. However, when they would return home to India, that life would end fast. They returned to their previous life as if the fame did not matter. They were still considered slum children and some even had their homes destroyed by the Indian government so there could be room for businesses. This incident has opened Americas eyes to a problem that has been around for centuries. It was a wake up call for Americans that some Indian children live in horrible conditions.

•According to an article on in.news.yahoo.com, Azharuddin Ismail M. Shaikh, the main child actor said,

“We have nowhere to go. We are just sitting on the road in the blazing sun right now. All our belongings and other household goods have either been thrown out or damaged. We don't know what we will eat today.”

Most of the child stars in the movie were effected including Shaikh and Rubina Ali.

•Why? • Throughout history, there has always been poverty in India and it has always been mainly caused by religion. Social Inequality has always been rampant through the country and the caste system has made that stronger. The dominant religion of India, Hinduism, is what causes the slum children to live in the condition that they do. To an American, the slums are viewed as human injustice and a violation of human rights. But to the Indian government, the slums are in place because their religion states that they are in a lower class and deserve to live that way.

• There are many charities that help the children living in Indian slums. Charity activity has even increased since news of the slumdog children was released. More people realized the living conditions and circumstances the slum children live in. There are charities all around the world, in America and even India, that help provide Indian slum children with the essentials they need for education and survival. There aere charities that provide Medicare for children with diseases like Diabetes. Things like this are essential for the future of the slum children.

•We can help by not just contributing to charities but publicizing our opinions and telling people about what the children living in slums have to deal with on a daily basis. Projects much like this one are great ways to publicize and inform people about problems in the world today much like this one. Helping to provide children in slums can give them tools to help them have a successful future. We may not be able to get rid of slums, but we can help better prepare the children in them for life.
