Staff and students are all busy with their respective tasks towards meet- ing the cardinal academic objectives of the University. Against this back- ground, one of the lead stories in this Edition becomes apt namely “SLU GRADUATES TO BE EMPLOYERS OF LABOUR” as pledged by none other than the Director, School of General and Entrepreneurship Studies. In the Edition also, SLU has once again lived to its expectation on corporate social responsibility by partnering with the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for the conduct of a special Teachers Recruitment Aptitude Test. The process was hitch free. We also invited our students to share their poetic muse with us. The theme is examination since it’s in the air. There are other items which make the Edition promising in terms of meeting your infotainment needs. University, Kafin Hausa, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu has attended the 14th General Conference and Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Association of African Universities (AAU).

The Conference, which held between

5th and 8th of June, 2017 at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, Ghana, deliberated on areas such as Promoting Science, Technology and Innovation through Higher Education; Curriculum Reform as Key to Graduate Employability and Entrepreneurship; The Role of Higher Education in Managing the Environment; Higher Education as a Tool for Promoting Democratic Governance and Mobilizing Resources for Higher Education in Africa.

The Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) and Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa have conducted an Aptitude Test for the recruitment of teachers at basic and post basic levels for Jigawa State Govern-ment. The examination took place between 9th and 10th June, 2017 at the University’s Permanent Site in Kafin Hausa.

On the first day of the Test, over 1,150 Graduate-Applicants participated in the exercise where they answered questions based on their disciplines. The eighteen (18) disciplines are: English Language, Arabic Language, Islamic Studies, Civic Education, Principles of Accounts, Economics, Book-Keeping, Geography, Carpentry and Joinery, Building, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Agricultural Science, Engineering, Catering Craft and Home Economics.

The second day recorded over 3,000 NCE holders who were tested on Basic Science, English Language and Mathematics.

MOEST AND SLU CONDUCT APTITUDE TEST FOR STATE TEACHERS RECRUITMENT

Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, is a member of

the Association which has a membership of over 380

Universities spread across all five regions of the

African continent representing all major language

groups. The AAU enjoys the unique capacity for

convening the vast majority of African Higher

Education Community to reflect and consult on key

issues affecting higher education in Africa and for

member Institutions. It is also the apex organization and forum for consultations, exchange of information and cooperation among Higher Education Institutions in Africa. It is thus the voice of higher education in Africa. It has its Headquarters I Accra, Ghana. Also participated at the Conference, was the Acting

Head, Academic Planning Unit of the University, Malam

Muhammad Bello Sabo.

List of successful candidates has already been forwarded to Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for further necessary action. It would be recalled that on 9th March, 2017, a Technical Committee on the Recruitment Interview for Teachers in Jigawa State under the

SLU STAFF TO REPRESENT NORTHWEST IN

ARNU JUNIOR ADMINISTRATORS TOUR

A staff from Registry department of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Malam Hilal Tasi’u Abdullahi will represent the Universities from the Northwest Geopolitical Zone at the 2017 ARNU Junior Administrators Tour. This followed his nomination by

the University and his subsequent passing of the Screening Exercise conducted by the National Execu-tive Committee of Association of Registrars of Nigeri-an Universities (ARNU) on Saturday, 17th June, 2017 at University of Ilorin Liaison Office in Lagos. With this development, Malam Tasi’u will represent the entire Universities in Northwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria at a Study Tour in Kenya where all representatives of the other regions of the country will gather for lectures and sightseeing. The ARNU Junior Administrators Tour Fellowship Award is an annual event organised by the Associa-tion of Registrars of Nigerian Universities in order to enhance young administrators’ professionalism, effi-ciency and effectiveness in service delivery within the University System. SLU Bulletin congratulates Malam Hilal Tasiu on this success.

In its effort to reduce graduate unemployment, the School of General and Entrepreneurship Studies (SGES) of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa is training students to acquire Entrepreneurship education and skills through course work and practical so as to facilitate economic independence and self reliance among its graduates. This was disclosed by the Director of the School Dr. Abdurrahman Ishola Ibrahim while answering questions from SLU Bulletin’s Tijjani Abubakar over sales of some finished products from the Students’ Practical Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Ishola explained that initially, four courses were offered which were Fishery and Aquaculture, Interior Decoration, Tailoring, Weaving and Cosmetology. He added that Leather Works and Beads Making were recently introduced to give students additional trade choices.

According to the Director, the School is planning to partner with Jigawa State Government in training Jigawa youths on empowerment and skills acquisition in addition to engaging the host communities in some of its trainings.

The sales of the Students’ Practical Entrepreneurship products began on Monday 19th June, 2017 and ended Friday 23rd June, 2017. Items sold included shoes for males and females, Bags, Liquid Soap, Air Freshener, Laundry Soap, Petroleum Jelly, Detergents, Curtains, Clothes as well as Beads necklaces and earrings.

The examinations for the Second Semester 2016/2017 Session will commence on Wednesday 5th and to end Thursday 27th July, 2017. Speaking to SLU Bulletin’s Hilal T. Abdullahi, the Uni-

versity Time Table Coordinator, Mr Abdulhakim

Olayiwola said students will begin with examinations

on General Studies courses in the first week while the

remaining three weeks will be for examinations in

their respective programmes. Mr Abdulhakim then

advised students to refer to Students’ Handbook on

the conduct of examinations for further guidance.

SLU ACTIVE CITIZENS CONDUCTS CASCADE TRAINING

The Active Citizens, Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa have undergone a four-day Cascade Training on Literacy between Thursday 8th and Sunday 11th June, 2017.

Speaking to SLU Bulletin’s Idris Hamza Yana, one of the facilitators of the Programme, Mr Salisu Garba, said the essence of the training is to equip the University students, who are members of the Active Citizens Initiative, with the requisite knowledge of teaching English Literacy at Primary School level. Mr Garba said the trained Active Citizens will later go to the primary schools around the University community and teach their pupils. He further explained that the aim of the programme is improve English literacy among primary school pupils in order to facilitate their understanding of other subjects that are being taught in English.
