From the artistic Director

i First met Billy Petersen in 1980 working on a ProDuction of Lanford Wilson’s Balm in Gilead. Fresh out of graduate school, my wife and I were making decisions about where we wanted to live, and former college classmate John Malkovich called to see if I wanted to be in this play he was directing. Of course, it didn’t pay anything, and we were performing in a Chicago community center, but I signed on and so began my career as an actor. Almost 35 years later, I can safely say it’s the best no-paying job I’ve ever had.

So when the opportunity arose to direct Billy in Greg Pierce’s Slowgirl at Steppenwolf, the theater where we had first met, it seemed too fortuitous to forgo. Here at the Geffen we had been considering Slowgirl for our upcoming season, and we were able to enter into a partnership wherein the play could have a home in both theaters. Now, all we needed to do was find the right young woman for the role of Becky. Enter Rae Gray.

We had the chance to rehearse the play at the Geffen before heading to Steppenwolf for a run last summer. An extraordinary team of designers were able to build a production that suited two very different theaters with equal elegance. But the chemistry and dynamism of Billy and Rae’s performances are what makes this production such a joy to direct. Greg Pierce wrote a beautifully crafted, quiet play about the failings and resurrection of that which ties each of us to the other. Billy and Rae portray these wonderfully complicated people with such honesty and integrity that Greg’s play is once again brought to life with heart and fervor.

Directing a play twice is a rare pleasure. As artists we always know there is more to be done, even once a play has opened. I’m so pleased to bring this play home to Los Angeles to share with you. Here’s to another 35 years of working with great actors.

Enjoy the show.

thank you For joining us For toDay’s PerFormance. we’D like to share a story with you from The Geffen Playhouse Literacy Project. This pilot program began last year, in collaboration with UCLA Center X and the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, at Mendez High School in Boyle Heights. It is helping 10th grade students improve their writing, reading and speaking skills through year-round arts and literacy programming.

“Before this program, if my teachers told me I had to write something, I wouldn’t know how to start. But because we went through this program — going to the Geffen to see plays and everything we did with them in class — I have an idea of how to start an essay and how to use examples. I now know how to express myself in a writing assignment.”

—10th grade student, Mendez High School

We are proud that the Geffen Playhouse Literacy Project is having significant impact on students in Boyle Heights — a neighborhood where over 60% of adults have not graduated high school and less than 5% have obtained a college degree. We invite you to learn more about the critical arts and literacy work the Geffen Playhouse Teaching Artists, Literacy Coaches and education team are doing in the Mendez classrooms and the impact the Literacy Project has had on these 10th grade students by visiting geffenplayhouse.com/education.

This crucial work wouldn’t be possible without the loyalty and support of our beloved family of Board members, donors, subscribers and patrons who, like us, call the Geffen Playhouse home. Thank you for sharing your passion for the arts and arts education with us. Help us deepen and expand our innovative Geffen Playhouse Literacy Project to more underserved high school students in need by donating today at geffenplayhouse.com/donate.

Thank you for joining us for today’s performance, and we look forward to seeing you again soon at the theater!

Amy Levinson: The environment of your play is so specific it is almost its own character. What was the impetus for placing the play here?

Greg Pierce: The location came first. I was in Costa Rica with a friend, working on a different play. I had a lot of free time so I was hiking a lot. I became really interested in Costa Rican animals. I started thinking, “What could happen here?” I thought of a 17-year-old girl who felt totally out of her element. I thought about her walking these trails, worrying about what was happening back home, and keeping an eye out for snakes. The rest of the story emerged from that.

AL: Becky’s dialogue — that of a 17 year old girl, is staggeringly authentic. How did you capture this voice so well?

GP: Thank you. One great thing about living in New york City is that you can hear whatever accents or dialects or speech patterns you want to. After I started writing Slowgirl, I listened for teen-girl rhythms on subways, on the street, in restaurants. Fortunately, some teen girls talk so loudly you can be a half-block away and still hear everything. My cousin Emma was that age while I was writing the play but she was too eloquent to be helpful.

AL: Can you speak to the specific challenges of writing a two-hander.

GP: One challenge in writing a two-hander is that once both characters speak, those are the voices we’ll be hearing all night. So I have to make sure they’re saying interesting things because I can’t rely on the entrance of a new voice to give the play an adrenaline boost. Sometimes while writing Slowgirl I’d have thoughts like, “Can’t I just have a messenger burst in, collapse on the floor, and deliver news about an invasion?” The answer is no. Since I’m stuck with these two, I have to keep figuring out who they are.

AL: (And the question I pose to every playwright I have the pleasure of interviewing) — Can you talk a bit about your process, how you cultivate ideas and get down to the business of writing?

GP: When I’m just starting work on a play, I like to think about the location and the scenario for quite a while. I walk around a lot. Certain interactions between characters start to replay over and over in my head, sometimes in different ways. When that world seems real enough, I write a first draft as quickly as I can. Then I put it aside for a while and work on something else. I try not to plot out too much before writing the first draft so that I’m not forcing characters into certain places by the end of a scene. I try to let them talk, and talk, knowing I’ll end up cutting most of what they say. For me, the most important thing about the early stage of a play is to not talk about it or get any feedback. That way it feels like a world you’re peering into, not a kit that needs assembly.
