Hari: Om Tat Sat.

Sound (¿abda), its disciplined and refined utterance, hasbeen paramount in the religio-spiritual life and pursuit ofthis land. Right from Vedic times, the chanting of hymnsand verses has held a great deal of meaning and purpose. In relaxing and purifying the mind, in cultivating attention, and in making the heart broad and light, chanting has beenheld to be immensely effective.

Narayanashrama Tapovanam, a place of learning and anabode for dissemination of Brahma-vidy¡, has always laidspecial emphasis on sublime recitation as an important formof spiritual s¡dhan¡. In fact, in all my talks and discourses,I have always made chanting an integral part. Many of thelisteners and the readers also have thus developed a specialattunement for sublime recitations.

With the arrival of Swami Nirvi¿esh¡nanda T¢rtha and M¡Gurupriy¡, this aspect gained a greater momentum andappeal. On almost all occasions of Jµ¡na-yajµas and Satsangs,I used to ask them to chant some Upanishadic mantras, especially the á¡nti-p¡¶has, along with some of the exquisitedevotional compositions. Listening to these, many expresseda desire for a cassette of these hymns. Finally, at the

pursuance of Smt Shanti Hiranand, a renowned singer anda close disciple of mine, M¡ Gurupriy¡ and SwamiNirvi¿esh¡nanda went to a studio in Delhi to record Songof the Soul, copies of which are already with many devoteesand seekers in India and abroad.

The emphasis in the whole recitation of the Song of the Soulis in inducing and generating a contemplative and meditativemood. Naturally, listening to the cassette leads the seekersto get into meditation. After the cassette was released abouttwo years back, the need for its written text with meaningbecame pronounced. Thus is born this publication, which, itis hoped, will help earnest seekers to learn and recite theslokas themselves to their own hearts’ content. Hard workof almost everybody in the Ashram has gone into theproduction, especially for transliteration and almost word-to-word English translation.

Remember, a few words, or better a verse or two, from thegreat Sanskrit heritage, is sufficient to transform andenlighten any one. So deep and wholesome is the influencethis cultured language holds for humanity. May you all beenriched and inspired by the spirit and contents of this Songof the Soul.

With love and blessings,Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha.
