From these verses, so much can be learnt, depending upon Allah

SWT granting us the profound understanding and Wisdom.

Traditionally, we would speak of the many benefits of fasting an of

Ramadhan.

As in my previous reflections, I would seek out the profound

‘principles’ in every of the teachings of the Qur’an and As-Sunnah of

our Prophet Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص which, rather then be reduced or

confined only to its immediate context, it should also be possible to

extend and apply them consistently throughout our life generally as

Muslims.

Rather than limiting it on Ramadhan, let us consider what impact

and significant these lessons have upon our entire life as Muslims.

Amongst these ‘principles’ which (WALLAAHU-A’LAM –and only

Allah knows all), I can identify are important virtues in the Islamic

concepts such as TAQWA (God fearing-consciousness); and seeking

HUSN-AL-KHAWAATIM (Goodly or best endings); striving with virtue

of AS-SWOBR (Patient perseverance) and hoping to be granted

virtue of AL-ISTIQOMAH (Steadfastness, unswerving consistency).

In Ramadhan fasting, INSHA-ALLAH we may be given the lesson and

experience fore-taste (DZOUQ) of the various states of TAQWA.

As previously alluded, TAQWA is that spiritual state of consciousness

of Allah SWT leading to our safeguarding ourselves from sinning, and

it has various levels :

TAQWA (God fearing-consciousness) has various levels from basic to the

highest virtue which Muslims must strive for, and thus the very reason

Allah SWT has prescribed the fasting in Ramadhan is for us to learn it.

Indeed to have TAQWA is such an important command to strive for that

without fail, every KHATIB (mosque sermon-preacher) in JUMU’AH has

to enjoin upon himself and every Muslim from the pulpit (MIMBAR).

Interestingly, in this verse (Q: Aali ‘Imran:3 : 102), we are clearly

commanded to remain true as Muslims until the end. This alludes to

another principle teaching in Islam which highlight the state of our

‘ending’ as crucial – “Do not die unless you have surrendered as Muslims”

. This is generally termed as “HUS-NUL-KHATIMAH.”

TADZKIRAHTADZKIRAH

Reflect the principles of TAQWA - as in fasting, we are to always fear

transgressing against what has been deemed forbidden (thus – TAQWA

God fearing-consciousness) and to ensure the outcome of the fast and

our ‘IBADAH (worship and devotionals) in Ramadhan becomes

acceptable to Allah (thus HUS-NUL KHAWAATIM- good endings).

And to be able to do this we have to practice the virtue of striving with

AS-SWOBR’ (patient perseverance) through the days fasting, and being

vigilant through its nights - from the first day till the end of

RAMADHAN.

With its accomplishment in RAMADHAN, it is hope that the newly

attained level of heightened religiosity can be appreciated and

sustained throughout (thus ISTIQOMAH – steadfast, uprightness)

A bunch of runners were steadily jogging as a team. The pace was steady and it

was led by their team captain-cum-coach, who provided them direction as well

as to monitor every one else’s timing. This was done for some distance in the

race when suddenly they were overtaken by several others from different

teams, sprinting past them. One member in team then shouted at the captain:

Question: Why are we going so slow unlike others who kept whizzing pass us

all. Shouldn’t we be like them and try to be ahead of them?

Answer : The others you saw sprinting

are those who believe that we are

running a 100 meter race.

Once a rather ‘tricky’ (loaded) question was posed to me, which, if hastily

(wrongly) responded would result in either :

[1] Islam being misrepresented in a very bad light to non-Muslims, or

[2] the true message and teaching of Al-Islam compromised for the sake of

trying to conform to non-Muslim’s value regarding what is good.

It was regarding a well-known (non-Muslim) Noble Prize winner, Mother Teresa

of Calcutta , acknowledged for her exceptionally good humanitarian work

amongst the poor.

The question was :

Based on the Islamic perspective (tenets, dogma, teaching), will she (as a non-Muslim) still end up in Hell in the Hereafter, despite her having done (acknowledged by all), nay in fact dedicated her whole life, in such good works?

Page 44: Slideshare [tazdzkirah-ramadhan-2015-part-#4]-quranic-principles-on-ramadhan- contn'd-(12-july-2015)

MY RESPONSE:

No! She will not “go to hell in the Hereafter, despite her having done good

works” … it depends on other fundamental factors (criteria) other than deeds.

Islam too recognize and admire the good exemplary works that she had done.

And we Muslims believe that Allah is Just and has already determined that she

be rewarded for her good works … after all, she had already received the Noble

prize and won worldwide accolades for that – albeit in this life.

The question as to “whether she will end up in Paradise or Hell in the Afterlife”,

is dependent upon whether in this life she had believed, acknowledged and

served (worship) the True God till the end . After all, it is Allah, Who Alone can

judge and decide that matter, because it is to Him belongs both Paradise and Hell.

And those who associate partners to God will forever be forbidden Paradise;

while unrepentant sinful believer may still be in Hell for a term. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
