WEBSITE DESIGN, BY CAPTAIN OBVIOUS
FIRST THINGS FIRST
Strategies for commercial websites vary…
But there are three main goals that should always be the same:
1. Attract new visitors
2. Nurture visitors who return
3. Turn both into customers
So, how can you strive to reach those goals?
OUTLINE
•Navigation• Imagery•Calls to action•Content Management System•Ownership
NAVIGATION
Three words:
Keep It Simple
Yes
No
Tip: Don’t use words that readers might be unfamiliar with.
Example: Screws > Inclined planes wrapper helically around axes
IMAGERY
Always address the three Ws of website design through imagery:
Who you are
What you do
Who your target audience is
Tip: When it comes to imagery, we almost always suggest a set of rotating images at the top of the home page.
Example: In the rotation, use no more than 5 images and include a text overlay that describes each image.
CALLS TO ACTION
Closing is the goal, so don’t forget that the consumer should constantly be reminded of how to contact you. That way, when they decide to hire/purchase, the process is simple.
Tips:
• Contact information should be on every page
• Google maps should be included on specific locations
• Include different calls to action throughout site
CMS, AKA CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Your website should be coded in a CMS, without exception.
What CMS do we recommend?
Wordpress
OWNERSHIP
GOAL: Make your website hosting relationship your own, so that it can never be held hostage.
So you don’t end up like this lady:
How to do it:
• Have your agency provide you with the layered Photoshop files used on your site.
• Have the agency develop your site on an open-source CMS.
• Finally, NEVER let them host your website.
