Hosta Virus X

Symptoms include mottled colors, dark color ‘bleeding’ from the veins, and puckering.

• In Kansas, we have detected HVX in these cultivars, and others:

‘Gold Standard’‘Sum and Substance’‘Striptease’ (hosta of the year in Wichita)

HVX “Cultivars”

• Breakdance, Eternal Father, Kiwi Watercolours, Leopard Frog, Lunacy, Parkish Gold

• Kansas Dept of Ag assumes these are ALL infected. They appear to be infected versions of previous cultivars

Spread

• Not known to be spread by insects

• HVX spreads mechanically– Propagation/division

Management• Testing is available at diagnostic

labs

• In home lawn/landscape:– Scout plants, remove infected plants

• In greenhouse/nursery:– Rogue out and destroy infected

plants
