MEMBER SURVEY: We are somewhat at a loss to understand why so few members attend meetings, classes, outings etc. To this end, the board is in the process of putting together a member survey asking for your input and ideas. Suggestions for survey questions are welcome. A REPEAT PITCH TO ALL NEW MEMBERS and BEGINNERS: We have scheduled a special KERN RIVER OUTING the weekend of October 29th. On Saturday the outing will consist of ‘Guy Jeans Fishing the Kern’ - half day class. Two class sessions will be offered, morning or afternoon. Class cost is $75 per person. Also offered is fishing with an experienced club mentor the remainder of the time. This is a great oppournity for new comers. There is a maximum of 6 in each session (12 total) and we have 9 signed up so far - if you want to be included let me know ASAP. Details on lodging, transportation etc. will be worked out at a later date.

2016 DONATION SUGGESTIONS: As I mentioned last month we are in the process of considering requests for donations. If you have suggestions, please contact a board member. Following is a draft of the donation request letter we will send out:

The Santa Lucia Fly Fishers is pleased to announce this years’ solicitation for funding requests from local not-for-profit organizations engaged in local environmental projects. Projects which focus environmental activities on the protection, preservation and/or restoration of wildlife and fisheries resources are eligible for funding.

Interested not-for-profit organizations seeking funding should submit a “Funding Request Letter” (FRL) to the attention of the Santa Lucia Fly Fisheries Conservation Committee (by email or PO Box ). The FRL should be concise and contain the following:

1. A brief description of the environmental project activity for which funding is being requested.

2. The specific use for funding provided by the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers.

3. The date(s) on which the project activity will begin.

4. Any other information deemed relevant.

The Santa Lucia Fly Fishers anticipates funding support of not more than $xxxx for each project selected for funding. All Funding Request Letters must be received no later than xxxxxx

We look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Sincerely,

JULY MEETING and PROGRAM: Our July program will feature Chris Holm. Chris is a member of the Santa Clarita casting Club. His program will cover 3 of the rivers in southwest Wyoming that don’t get nearly as much pressure as the better known Snake, South Fork and Henry’s Fork. I had the good fortune of spending numerous family vacations in the late 70’s and early 80’s in this area and fished all these rivers a lot. The following description of the Conant boat launch, which is the primary launch on the South Fork, will give you an idea how the area has changed: “This very large launch has very nice bathrooms and 2 lanes for launching your boat and a huge paved parking lot”. I swear it’s like a marina. My experience is the Grays, Salt & Teton fish equally as well with much less pressure. (see below for more info about Chris.)

MEETING RAFFLE: We have changed the way we do the meeting raffle. Instead of putting your tickets in a cup for a specific item all tickets will go in one cup. The first ticket drawn will have first choice of all the raffle items etc. We’ll see how you like this change. Let us know if you like this format better than the cups.

(4 SLFF NEWSLETTER – July 2016

Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 6:30pm

Margie’s Diner, 1575 Calle Joaquin, SLO

Chris Holm “Fishing the Upper Teton, Salt

and Grays Rivers” The presentation will focus on fishing the Idaho’s Upper Teton River and the Salt and Grays rivers in Wyoming with equal doses of environment, trout, tips and techniques. Also getting there, getting breakfast, getting advice and getting to bed.

Chris Holm grew up in the Berkshires of Massachusetts fishing for wild and native brook trout in small brooks and beaver ponds. Chris now has the good fortune to fish about 160 days a year in the USA and the bordering territorial waters. He has the better fortune of a very understanding spouse of 29 years, two curious adult children and a hell-bent-for-fury 6 year old German Shorthair Pointer. After a couple years of engineering school in Boston, Chris packed up and left for Bozeman, Montana. He spent five years in Bozeman, studying architecture and fly fishing. Yes indeed, college in Bozeman and fly fishing the Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson and YNP proved an intoxicating mixture, even in winter.

After a career that included sixteen years of corporate life and business travel, Chris took a package. He started The Ferris Sporting Brand to offer fly fishing anglers a product mix reflecting his blend of innovation, value, quality and performance. The business name honors the memory of Chris’ friend and fly fishing mentor, John Ferris. Ferris offers custom and stock fly rods, fly reels, fly boxes, accessories and tools at ferrissporting.com. The site also includes a blog featuring fly fishing tips and techniques masquerading as anecdotes. The company is located in Valencia, CA. Chris is an active member of the Santa Clarita Casting Club and serves as the Rod Building Committee of one. Home waters are Piru Creek, Pyramid Lake (CA), beaches north of Ventura and the lee of Catalina.

SLFF Tying Group - Jim Snodgrass

There will be no fly tying session on July 7th. The fly tyers are taking a break in July… some may even go fishing. We will resume our fly tying sessions again on Thursday, August 4th at 6:30, at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo.

Fly Fishing Faire - Boy Scout Merit Badge Program The Fly Fishing Faire planning and scheduling is in full swing and one of the Programs that's always a success is the Boy Scout Merit Badge Program. Each year several young people learn to cast, tie a fly, and catch a fish thanks to the hard work of the BSA leader, Ed Pounds. One way you can help spread the word is reach out to your membership and let them know this program is going on at the Fly Fishing Faire at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop, CA on 10/15 and 10/16, so they can check with their families. The program could also use some volunteers to help out so if anyone in your club is interested, please contact the Volunteer Chair, Ed Swanson at [email protected] or call 310-283-1035 or contact Ed Pounds directly at [email protected] or call 760-812-7082. The SWC and BSA Program appreciates anything you can do to help promote this great program to help bring in more youth to the fly fishing sport. Thanks much.

Halibut Outing – Port San Luis – July 9th

We will fish Port San Luis. It is protected from the ocean swells and big waves. This southerly facing fishing bay also produces higher ocean water themperatures than other nearby beaches (which the halibut like). We will be able to fish from shore or with a pontoon close to the beach. A pontoon, kick-boat or kayak will improve your fishing chances and extend your fishing time (tide). Note: We normally launch our pontoons from the rocks in front of the pier parking lot. This works at low tide, but be very careful when you come back to beach your pontoon! The winter storms have moved a lot of sand closer to the rocks where we land. The sand creates big returning waves that can place you in danger 1 ½ hour before and 1 ½ hour after high tide. FOR YOUR SAFETY avoid landing your boat during this time. WHEN Saturday, July 9th WHERE Port San Luis – parking lot north of the pier Low Tide 8:23am (0.30 ft) High Tide 3:28pm (4.47 ft) GEAR UP around 8:30am FISHING around 9:00am WHAT TO BRING

Manzanita Lake Outing Report Beautiful scenery, great weather, a lot of good friends and very challenging fishing summarizes this year's outing. Bob Bayer, Ray and Pat Belknap, Paul and Bonita Crafts, Roger Grizzle, Tom Nicholson, Bernard and Christine Pieters, Mike and Joan Powers, Larry and Maxine Sederberg, Bob Williams and I all enjoyed ourselves. Fishing during the day was really tough; most fish were caught in the evening stripping black woolly buggers. In order to get a "fish fix" some of us spent a day on Little Crater Lake with considerable success. This was described as leaving the university of fishing and returning to grade school.

Even if the fishing is tough, the scenery is spectacular!

Thoughts About Travel Insurance A couple unfortunate recent experiences of club members reminded me about travel insurance. Coincidentally a good article on the subject is included in the most recent issue of the Auto Club's Westways magazine.
