A very happy New Year to each of you! May 2014 see some of your dreams come true – it would simply be greedy to ask that all of them do. SLEEPING ROUGH HOMELESS PROJECT What better way to begin the year than this outstanding new project from the Edwardstown Lions. It’s their Sleeping Rough Homeless Project. I don’t think many of us realise just how many homeless people there are in our community who do it really tough sleeping rough. So Edwardstown are expanding their humanitarian service by providing support and substance to these people in need. They have begun an exciting programme in cooperation with Marion Life Emergency Programme, Mary’s Soup Kitchen at Glenelg and Southern Domestic Violence Service to provide a shower and toiletry pack for the use by those less fortunate members of the community. The packs contain travel sized items of tissues, soap, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush and deodorant. Let’s face it – most of us have these items sitting unused in our drawers. Let’s gather up what we don’t truly need and help support this project. Some items are purchased by the club with each pack costing about $3.00. The Club has just had a generous donation of 1500 tissue packs from Auto Masters. A number of C2 Clubs have already come on board, with Noarlunga Morphett Vale in particular having agreed to join in to expand the project in their area. Get in contact with Judy Glastonbury at [email protected] for more details and how you can best help.

Around the Clubs Darwin Casuarina The Casuarina Lions were pleased to be contacted by the City of Darwin and be asked to provide a food and beverage service at the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday 29th November. Pictured (left to right) are Peg Gellert, Des Gellert, Phil Ingram, Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim, Deb Harrison and Jeff Dunn. The rains stayed away, for which we were all grateful, as while November is normally a hot & humid month (called “the build up”) this had been one of the wettest Novembers on record. The event was held in Raintree Park at the start of the Smith Street Mall in Darwin CBD, in a highly visible location, so it was good to be highly visible ourselves (in our Lions shirts) and to be mentioned regularly during the event announcements.

Irymple Irymple had a successful Club final for their Youth of the year. Pictured left to right Scott Hopkins (judge), Alexandria Deacon (overall winner), Tahlia Kite (public speaking winner), Salli Wilton (judge), Katerina Blekic (judge), Daniel Brewer, emcee.

Mount Gambier Donate Christmas Cheer. The Lions Club of Mount Gambier recently donated 100 kilogram of mincemeat valued at $600 to Foodbank Mount Gambier. This has been an annual donation to Foodbank to assist disadvantaged families in our district in the lead up to Christmas. The Project Coordinator Des Lattin was assisted by Lion Mike Scutter in organising the delivery of the mincemeat. The Mount Gambier Lion’s mission is to support the wider community and stretch its donation dollars as far as possible in its humanitarian service. The club has been very busy in recent times in selling raffle tickets for the annual Lions Christmas raffle which will be drawn on the 18th December. This year members sold a club record of 2,500 tickets. The every cent of the net proceeds of the raffle will be donated back into not for profit community organisations. Lions have also been very busy raising funds through their catering efforts at a number of out lets. In addition, members have been involved in the ongoing project of wood cutting. On Saturday Lions cut and delivered 10 cubic metres of wood to our customers. The Lions Christmas Cakes, a perennial favourite, are also selling very well this season. The Lions Club of Mount Gambier extends the warmest festive greetings to all Limestone Coast residents. Lions also express their sincere appreciation to the citizens for their valued support, cooperation and goodwill in all of our Lions projects throughout 2013. Remember Lions need you. Membership is available. Lions Graduate of the Year Presentation High achieving students honoured by Lions. The Lions Club of Mount Gambier has awarded dux students from seven schools in the city with its annual Lions Graduate of the year awards. The awards are made to the most outstanding boy and best girl, at each school, who have completed their primary education and are moving on to secondary school. The awards are based on academic achievement, involvement in school activities and the possession of desirable social skills. In most cases selection was made by the classes involved, with teachers making the final adjudication. Project Coordinator Lion Fred Pfeiffer said ‘these awards are an appropriate acknowledgment of these high achieving young citizens’. Furthermore, the award serves as an incentive to these graduates to aspire to achieve excellence in their secondary education.’

Kingston SE 50th Anniversary The Kingston SE Lions Club advises that it will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary of being Chartered on March 8th 2014. A function to celebrate this great milestone will be held at the Kingston Football Club on that evening. As there are many addresses of past members that are unknown we are appealing to those members who have left our Club and joined various other Lions Clubs to make contact with the Club so that the appropriate invitation can be sent. The contact person is Lion Peter Cooper who can be emailed or phoned as follows: [email protected] or 0488762392.

Page 6: SLEEPING ROUGH HOMELESS PROJECT · Irymple -1 Murray Bridge -5 Yankalilla -1 Yulara -2 . Contents ... The awards are made to the most outstanding boy and best girl, at each school,

Our Club also wishes to advise that it will be holding a large auction of WORKSHOP & ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT on Saturday January 28th 2014 on account of a deceased estate. There are a lot of quality items in the auction and it will be a great fundraiser for the Club. Contact Lion Peter Cooper if you need further details.

Victor Harbor & Pt. Elliot The weeks leading up to Christmas are busy, but very productive, times for our Lions Club. The end of the School Year saw Lions ongoing recognition of young achievers by the presentation of Certificates of Merit, accompanied by cheques, to young people at all our local schools. Lions attended each respective school’s Award Night to make the presentations. Awards made to high-achieving school students this year amounted to almost $1500. Children in the reception years at local Primary schools have been invited to write letters to Santa. This has been a successful Lions project spanning many years. It encourages children to join in the spirit of Christmas, use their imagination, and develop elementary letter-writing skills. The group of Lions attending to incoming ‘Santa’s Mail’, report a fantastic response this year. Over 400 letters have been received, and replies sent to every child who participated in the project. It was a happy, end of school year Lions activity for the children. Meanwhile, sales of our famous Xmas cakes and puddings have reached record levels. So popular have the Lions puddings been that supplies have practically been exhausted. Direct sales at the retirement villages in recent days have also almost depleted stock. Any person now requiring cakes should act quickly to obtain them before they are all gone. There are a number available from most Banks and financial institutions in Victor Harbor. Our thanks go to Lion Milan Prochazka for making his 1954 Vauxhall utility available to tow the Lions Club float in the Annual Victor Harbor Xmas Pageant. The use of such a splendid auto restoration in the Pageant drew particular attention to our float. Not to be outdone, Santa-suited President Ian, also managed to dispense bags of Christmas cheer and blessings from his sleigh at the rear of the Pageant. Well done, fellow Lions. An excellent conclusion to a very busy, but happy, year! Prepared by Leigh Blacket, 8 Young St., Pt. Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) The ALF exists to provide funds for disaster relief, community projects and assistance to needy individuals and families. This year, I have been appointed District 201C2 ALF Chairman for a three year term. Since taking up this role, I have become aware that many Lions are not familiar with ALF grants and awards. The purpose of this article is to provide some basic information about the Foundation. ALF Grants

(i) Emergency Grants These Grants are made on application to the Foundation Chairman; they are meant to cover situations where a disaster requires an urgent application of funds. Matching funding is not required.

(ii) Disaster Recovery Grants These are for situations after a disaster where there is a need for financial assistance for recovery/restoration/rehabilitation. These can be made in addition to Emergency Grants, and do not require matching funding.

(iii) Special Purpose Grants These are to provide help and assistance in all forms for community welfare on a National, District or State basis. Matching funding is not necessarily required; conditions may be imposed.

(iv) Compassionate Grants

Page 8: SLEEPING ROUGH HOMELESS PROJECT · Irymple -1 Murray Bridge -5 Yankalilla -1 Yulara -2 . Contents ... The awards are made to the most outstanding boy and best girl, at each school,

These are grants to persons or families who are suffering financial hardship through illness or other circumstances. They may be applied for by Lions, Leos or Lioness Clubs, or a Zone or District. These will generally require matching funding from applicant Club. The funding for these Grants has been made available through a generous donation by Dick Smith.

(v) General Grants These are Grants for Community welfare projects. They are to be for specific items. Grant applications should be made on the General Grant application form, which is available on the ALF website. The completed application form should be forwarded to me (as ALF District Chairman). I have to endorse ti and forward it to the ALF Grants chairman. There are a number of conditions and exclusions, which are set out on the website.

Donations ALF has three accounts; General Account, Awards Account and Emergency Disaster Appeals Account. Donations can be made to each of these accounts. The General account finances the General Grants Programme; donations to this account should be posted to the ALF Treasurer. The Awards Account is to cover various awards that clubs may make; more on this below. Emergency Disaster Appeals Account are for specific disasters. Donations may be sent to the ALF Treasurer. However, when an official appeal is launched for a specific disaster, donations should be sent through the Cabinet Treasurer. Donations from the public for such a fund may be tax deductible. This will require the club obtaining the donation to send the following information to the Cabinet Treasurer; Name of donor, address of donor, amount of donation. Awards Awards are a major fundraiser for the Foundation. There are four awards: William R Tresise Award $2000 donation Ian M Stockdale Award $1000 donation James D Richardson Award $500 donation Community Service Award $250 donation For the first three of these awards, payment can be prepaid; the total amount must be paid by the time of the application. For the Community Service Award, total payment must be made at the time of application. Donations made to Emergency or Disaster Relief appeals cannot be applied to awards due to issues of tax deductibility. Website The ALF website provides information and application forms. Please consult this website. It is: www.lionsclubs.org.au/alf I hope that the above is useful and informative. It seems incredible that another year has passed so quickly and yet a whole lot of things have happened during that time. We have passed the 1 million books distributed including over 165,000 books distributed by Lions. Nearly 400 Lions and Lioness Clubs are now involved with the project. Is your Club one of them? I have received several testimonials from people who have had firsthand experience with the book being used in a situation that has saved their life and some of these have been uploaded onto the EMIB website www.emib.org.au Unfortunately, we still have not been able to get the project off the ground in New Zealand but are hopeful that finally we are very close and I hope to have good news in the next few months. I would like to thank all members who are involved in this project for their effort during the past year and wish all Lions, Lioness and Leos and their partners all the very best for the Festive Season and look forward to a great year in 2014. Best Regards Lion Bernie Donohue Chairman EMIB Committee

International News LCIF Dear Lion, As the year comes to an end, I want to thank you for all of your admirable service work through your clubs and through Lions Clubs International Foundation. LCIF would not be what it is without your support and dedication to service. This can easily be seen through your disaster relief response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. As I was shown the devastation and wreckage during my visit recent visit there, I was humbled and saddened by what I saw. But I also saw Lions' efforts to provide aid, including where other organizations could not. This filled me with great pride. Lions on the ground have made a huge difference in the month following the typhoon. Lions around the world are helping to amplify typhoon relief efforts through more than US$ 1 million in disaster relief donations to LCIF. The Lions, Multiple Districts and countries that have made large contributions and commitments for the Philippines can be found on the LCIF website. Along with Lions, our partners at VSP Global should also be recognized for their commitment – they are matching every dollar that VSP Global employees donate to LCIF for disaster relief in the Philippines, up to US$10,000. We are grateful for everyone's support – every dollar helps and can restore hope when someone has lost everything. I witnessed more of Lions' dedication to supporting LCIF at several recent fundraisers. Contributions made at local golf events in Japan and MD 300 Taiwan will strengthen humanitarian programs. And I am looking forward to attending a Lions golf fundraiser and tournament in Spain this March. Lions must register by January 31, 2014. The tournament proceeds will support LCIF's efforts to stop measles worldwide. Lions around the world are truly making a difference. I am excited to see what the next few months hold for Lions and LCIF as we continue our humanitarian efforts to change lives.

Sincerely, Wayne A. Madden
